Currently, I give back to my community through active involvement in agriculture and animal care, supporting the people and animals who have shaped my life and instilled in me a sense of responsibility and service. Growing up in a rural agricultural environment, I have spent countless hours assisting with livestock care, learning the importance of hard work, diligence, and attention to detail, and sharing this knowledge with others who may be newer to farming or animal husbandry. I have also volunteered my time to support local farms and agricultural programs, helping with herd management, animal health monitoring, and community events that promote sustainable agriculture. These experiences have allowed me to contribute directly to the well-being of animals and the livelihoods of the farmers and ranchers who depend on them while developing my own skills in veterinary care, leadership, and education. In addition, I have actively sought opportunities to mentor younger students and peers interested in agriculture and animal care, sharing what I have learned about responsible animal management, the significance of animal welfare, and the impact that veterinary medicine has on both the community and the broader agricultural industry. These experiences have reinforced my understanding that giving back is not only about direct action but also about empowering others to make informed decisions and care for their animals responsibly, fostering a culture of sustainability and community-mindedness. In the future, I plan to continue giving back by pursuing a career as a mixed animal veterinarian, providing essential veterinary care to both livestock and companion animals in rural communities where access to veterinary services is often limited. By doing so, I aim to support herd and flock health, food safety, biosecurity, and animal welfare, while also strengthening the human-animal bond through care for pets and companion animals. Beyond direct clinical work, I hope to educate farmers, producers, and younger generations about responsible animal care, disease prevention, and sustainable herd management practices, sharing knowledge that will help sustain agricultural traditions and improve the livelihoods of those who feed our country. I also aspire to be an advocate for the agricultural community, using my expertise and leadership skills to support initiatives that enhance rural development, animal welfare, and public awareness of the critical role that agriculture and veterinary medicine play in society. Ultimately, I believe that by combining my personal experiences, professional training, and dedication to service, I can make a lasting and positive impact on both animals and the people who care for them, ensuring the health, sustainability, and resilience of agricultural communities while inspiring others to contribute to the well-being of the world around them. Veterinary medicine is my path to creating meaningful change, not just through treatment and care, but through education, advocacy, and a lifelong commitment to giving back to the communities and industries that have shaped my life and that continue to feed and support the world.

My name is Riley Buttress and I am pursuing a career in veterinary medicine with a focus on mixed animal practice because it allows me to combine my lifelong passion for animals with my desire to serve the agricultural community that shaped who I am. Growing up in a rural environment surrounded by livestock, farm life, and hardworking people whose livelihoods depended on the animals and land they cared for, I developed a deep respect for both the animals and the people who sustain them. Agriculture has taught me important values such as responsibility, perseverance, humility, and the importance of community and these lessons have guided my personal and professional goals. My father, who is a veterinarian, has been a profound influence on my path and watching him dedicate himself to the health and well-being of animals while supporting the farmers and families who depend on them showed me the critical role veterinarians play not only in animal care but also in sustaining rural communities and agricultural life. From a young age I have known that I wanted to follow a similar path and dedicate my career to giving back to the industry that has given me so much. With my education, I hope to specialize in mixed animal medicine so that I can provide care for both livestock and companion animals in rural areas where veterinary services are often limited. Large animal veterinarians are essential to maintaining herd health, supporting food safety, biosecurity, and animal welfare while companion animal care strengthens the bond between families and their pets. Beyond clinical care, I hope to educate producers and younger generations about responsible animal management, disease prevention, and sustainable practices to ensure the long-term viability of agricultural communities. Receiving this scholarship would provide critical support in achieving my goal of earning a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. Veterinary education is rigorous and requires a significant financial investment, and this scholarship would allow me to focus fully on my studies, clinical training, and community outreach without the added stress of financial burden. It would also enable me to pursue additional hands-on experiences, leadership opportunities, and educational programs that will prepare me to serve my community effectively. This scholarship is not only an investment in my education but also in the rural and agricultural communities I hope to serve. By supporting me, you are helping to ensure that these communities have access to veterinarians who are committed to animal health, food safety, and the sustainability of agriculture. With this support, I will be able to combine my passion for animals with my dedication to giving back, becoming a trusted resource for the people and animals who depend on each other and helping sustain the traditions, livelihoods, and communities that have shaped my life.

I chose to study veterinary medicine because it allows me to combine my lifelong passion for animals with my desire to serve the agricultural community that shaped who I am. Growing up in a rural area, agriculture has been an integral part of my life. I was surrounded by livestock, farm life, and hardworking people whose livelihoods depend on the animals and land they care for. This upbringing taught me important values such as responsibility, humility, and the importance of community. My father, who is a veterinarian, has been a profound influence on my career path. Watching him dedicate himself to the health and well-being of animals, while supporting the farmers and families who depend on them, showed me the critical role veterinarians play not just in animal care, but in sustaining rural communities and agricultural life. With my education, I hope to specialize in mixed animal medicine, allowing me to provide veterinary care for both livestock and companion animals in rural areas where such services are often limited. Large animal veterinarians are essential to maintaining herd and flock health, supporting food safety, and promoting biosecurity and animal welfare. At the same time, caring for companion animals allows me to strengthen the bond between families and their pets, which is an important aspect of community life. By pursuing a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree, I aim to gain the scientific knowledge, clinical skills, and leadership abilities necessary to provide high-quality care to all animals, regardless of the setting. Beyond treating animals, I hope to use my education to educate and empower others in my community. I want to work with producers and younger generations to promote responsible animal care, disease prevention, and effective herd management. By sharing this knowledge, I can help ensure the sustainability of agricultural practices and strengthen the communities that rely on them. Veterinary medicine is not only about clinical care; it is also about supporting people, improving the systems that sustain agricultural life, and ensuring the welfare of animals across all settings. Ultimately, my goal is to become a trusted resource for rural and agricultural communities, giving back to the industry that has given me so much. Through veterinary medicine, I can serve as both a caregiver for animals and a support system for the people who depend on them, helping maintain the health, productivity, and traditions of rural life. A DVM degree will equip me to make a meaningful impact, allowing me to provide compassionate, knowledgeable care while contributing to the long-term sustainability of agriculture and the well-being of the communities I love.

I am pursuing a career in veterinary medicine, with a focus on mixed animal practice, because it allows me to combine my passion for animal health with my deep connection to the agricultural community that shaped who I am. Growing up in a rural area, agriculture has been an integral part of my life. From an early age, I was surrounded by livestock, farm life, and the hardworking people whose livelihoods depend on the land and the animals they care for. My admiration for the agricultural industry stems from the relationships I have observed and experienced firsthand. I have seen the dedication of farmers and ranchers who work tirelessly to provide food for our country, and I have witnessed the critical role veterinarians play in ensuring the health, productivity, and welfare of their animals. My father, who is a veterinarian, has been one of my greatest influences. Watching him serve our community with compassion, integrity, and knowledge has shown me the profound impact a veterinarian can have; not only on animals, but on the families and communities that depend on them. His example inspired me to follow in his footsteps and dedicate my career to serving rural and agricultural communities. By pursuing and earning my Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree, I aim to give back to the agricultural industry and the communities that shaped me. My goal is to specialize in mixed animal medicine so that I can provide quality veterinary care for both livestock and companion animals in areas where such services are often limited. Large animal veterinarians play an essential role in ensuring herd and flock health, supporting food safety, maintaining biosecurity, and promoting animal welfare. At the same time, caring for companion animals allows me to help families maintain the bond they share with their pets. By practicing mixed animal medicine, I hope to address the diverse veterinary needs of rural communities and be a resource for the people whose work sustains the agricultural economy. Beyond clinical care, I am passionate about using my education to educate and empower others in my community. I hope to teach younger generations, producers, and livestock owners about responsible animal care, disease prevention, and effective herd management. Providing this knowledge helps strengthen agricultural practices and ensures the long-term sustainability of the industry. By combining veterinary expertise with communication and leadership skills, I want to become not only a healthcare provider for animals, but also a trusted advisor for the people who depend on them. Ultimately, I hope my work will help preserve the traditions and values of rural life while supporting the livelihoods of those who feed our country. I believe I am a strong applicant for a veterinary program because of my unique combination of practical experience, personal motivation, and commitment to service. Growing up in an agricultural community has given me firsthand understanding of the challenges faced by rural livestock owners, as well as the critical importance of accessible veterinary care. These experiences have instilled in me resilience, adaptability, and a strong work ethic; qualities that I believe will allow me to succeed in veterinary school and in my future career. My dedication to this field comes from both passion and purpose: I do not simply wish to work with animals, but to support the communities that rely on them and to contribute meaningfully to the sustainability of agriculture. One person I deeply admire is my father. His dedication to his patients and his community has shown me the true meaning of service and professional responsibility. He demonstrates daily that veterinary medicine is not just a profession, but a calling, one that requires knowledge, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to the welfare of both animals and people. His guidance and example have inspired me to pursue veterinary medicine with the goal of making a tangible difference in my community. In the long term, I envision a career in which I can serve as a trusted resource for rural communities, providing high-quality veterinary care, education, and support. With a DVM degree, I will be prepared to serve as a compassionate, knowledgeable, and committed veterinarian; dedicated not only to animal care, but to the communities and people whose lives are intertwined with the animals they love and depend on.
