Dr. William Evans Lycoming College Scholarship
When deciding where to attend college, I was looking for a place that could help me grow as a student, a baseball player, and a person soon entering the real world. Lycoming College stood out to me on my many visits for multiple reasons, but what ultimately made me choose Lycoming was a combination of the newly reinstated baseball program and the close-knit community the school offered amongst peers and professors. I came from a small town, where everybody knew each other, and I felt Lycoming gave me that same environment, where I was able to build relationships with many of my peers and my professors as well.
For that very reason, I knew I wanted to attend a smaller college. From my time at Lycoming, my professors have become my mentors who not only care about my grades, but also my goals and my growth inside and outside the classroom. Even in areas outside of my major, I have had professors encourage me and offer advice that I will use later in my career and life. I believe that kind of personal connection would have been nearly impossible at a larger school.
I am entering my senior year at Lycoming, pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration with a focus on marketing, as well as being part of clubs such as the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Student Athlete Advisory Committee. My goal after graduation is to acquire a job, hopefully within the sports industry, ideally doing marketing and/or brand development. Eventually, later in my life, I hope to become an entrepreneur and work for myself by opening my own bar or another business. I came into college fairly unsure of what I wanted to do after I graduated. But Lycoming's liberal arts education style helped me explore different areas of work to help me figure out what I was interested in and what I wanted to pursue as a career. I feel like the ability to take courses in a variety of subjects has made me more knowledgeable and has given me a diverse perspective on the world.
Additionally, being part of the first baseball team in 50 years at Lycoming was very meaningful to me. It gave me the unique opportunity to help build something from the ground up and set the standard for how the program represents the college. My experience on the baseball team has taught me how to stay motivated through failures and mistakes, and build relationships with members of my team to become stronger and more successful. Now, being truthful, juggling sports and school was no easy task. However, the time management skills I developed from being a student athlete are something extremely valuable that I know I will carry into my future career.
Now entering my final year at Lycoming, I frequently find myself thinking about where else I could have ended up. With the knowledge, memories, and lifelong friendships I have gained from attending Lycoming College, I am extremely grateful that I chose to become a Warrior.
