Dylan's Journey Memorial Scholarship
Growing up with Neurofibromatosis (NF) has presented a series of challenges that have shaped my academic journey and my outlook on life. NF is a genetic condition that causes tumors to form on the nerves, which can lead to a variety of physical and cognitive issues. For me, the effects have been both physical, with frequent medical appointments and occasional surgeries, and mental, with learning difficulties such as slower processing speeds and trouble staying focused. Throughout my childhood and into my teenage years, these challenges made education a difficult terrain to navigate. However, rather than allowing these obstacles to define me, I’ve learned to work harder, adapt, and find creative ways to overcome them.
Having NF has been a constant reminder that perseverance is essential. I remember moments when my physical health caused me to miss school or when the cognitive difficulties made it harder to grasp new concepts as quickly as my peers. But instead of giving in, I used the available resources to my advantage. For example, I often worked with a tutor, took advantage of extra time during exams, and broke down tasks into smaller, more manageable parts. These strategies not only helped me succeed academically but also instilled in me a sense of pride in my ability to adapt. The support I received from teachers, counselors, and family members reinforced my belief that education is something that everyone, regardless of their challenges, can access and succeed in.
My motivation for pursuing higher education is deeply rooted in my desire to create a future where I can make a tangible difference. I want to be someone who advocates for individuals with NF or other learning disabilities. One of my goals is to work in healthcare, potentially in a role where I can assist others with chronic conditions by providing emotional support, helping with patient education, or working in research. My experience with NF has given me a unique perspective on what it’s like to navigate life with a condition that doesn’t always have clear answers, and I want to use that experience to give others hope and guidance.
This scholarship will provide me with the necessary resources to continue my studies and gain the education and skills I need to pursue a career in healthcare or advocacy. As someone who has faced many obstacles but refused to give up, I know that I possess the determination and resilience to succeed in higher education and beyond. I am driven by a deep desire to turn my personal challenges into opportunities for helping others, and I believe this scholarship will allow me to take the next crucial step in achieving my goals.
I am confident that my experience with NF, combined with my passion for learning and my commitment to making a difference, makes me a strong candidate for this scholarship. With the opportunity to continue my education, I know I will be able to use my experiences to help others, advocate for those facing similar challenges, and contribute positively to society.

I have chosen to pursue a trade career because I believe in the practical, hands-on work that directly impacts the daily lives of individuals and communities. While a four-year college degree is a great path for many, I find myself drawn to the trades for their immediate applicability, job stability, and the opportunity to make a meaningful, direct impact. Building, plumbing, electrical work, and similar trades are essential to the growth and development of communities. Without skilled tradespeople, basic services would break down, homes would be unsafe, and essential infrastructure would fall apart. I want to be part of that workforce, using my hands and mind to create something tangible and lasting.
Specifically, I have chosen to pursue a career in [insert trade here, e.g., electrical work]. I am excited by the idea of being able to troubleshoot problems and find solutions that help keep homes and businesses running smoothly. In addition to providing services for the community, I hope to use my skills to give back. One of my goals is to help low-income families with essential repairs and to mentor young people who are interested in entering the trades. I firmly believe that skilled trades can be both a career path and a form of service to others. There is something incredibly rewarding about helping others and knowing that your work contributes to the safety and well-being of the people around you.
I recognize that the trade field comes with its own set of challenges. For one, the work can be physically demanding, and there will be long hours and sometimes unpredictable conditions. Additionally, staying up to date with industry standards, building codes, and new technologies requires continuous education. However, I plan to overcome these challenges by maintaining a commitment to learning. I will stay engaged in industry workshops, certifications, and take advice from experienced professionals in the field. The trade industry is ever-evolving, and my goal is to grow with it—continuously improving my skills and staying adaptable to new techniques and technologies.
At the same time, I expect the trade to offer great rewards in terms of job security, personal satisfaction, and the ability to make a positive impact. By focusing on both my technical skills and customer relationships, I aim to build a reputation as someone reliable, skilled, and committed to quality work. Through perseverance, learning, and dedication, I am confident I can meet the challenges of the trade industry and build a successful career while making a real difference in my community.
