I am a Biology major at Barry University whose identity has been shaped by resilience, service, and a strong connection to my Jamaican heritage. Growing up within the African Caribbean diaspora, I was raised to view education as both a privilege and a responsibility. My family emphasized perseverance, faith, and community uplift, values that continue to guide my academic journey and my aspiration to become a physician committed to equitable healthcare. Pursuing higher education in an environment different from my family’s cultural roots has challenged me to grow academically and personally. As a student navigating college as a first generation American from a Caribbean background, I have learned the importance of adaptability, self advocacy, and cultural awareness. Studying in a diverse academic setting has broadened my perspective on how culture shapes communication, access to resources, and opportunity. These experiences have strengthened my ability to collaborate across differences while remaining grounded in my identity, a skill that is especially vital in medicine and leadership. My educational journey has also reshaped how I understand service and responsibility. Serving as a Biology Lab Teaching Assistant has allowed me to mentor peers while reinforcing my own academic foundation. Guiding students through complex scientific concepts has taught me patience, clarity, and empathy, qualities that extend beyond the classroom. In addition, my leadership roles in the Minority Association for Pre Health Students and the National Society of Leadership and Success have exposed me to the systemic barriers faced by underrepresented students. Through advocacy and mentorship, I have learned that representation and support can directly influence student success. My academic focus in biology is closely tied to the impact I hope to make through a career in medicine. I intend to pursue medical school and become a physician who integrates clinical care, research, and community engagement to address health disparities. I am particularly motivated to serve underserved populations whose access to healthcare is limited by socioeconomic and structural barriers. However, the financial demands of higher education present ongoing challenges. Balancing tuition, educational expenses, and living costs has required careful planning and persistence, often limiting my ability to pursue unpaid research or enrichment opportunities. Receiving the Rose Ifebigh Memorial Scholarship would provide critical financial relief, allowing me to focus more fully on my academic and professional development. This support would reduce financial strain and enable me to continue building the experiences necessary for medical school preparation. More importantly, it would affirm my commitment to using education as a tool for service and leadership. I am driven by gratitude for my heritage, my family’s sacrifices, and the opportunities I continue to pursue. This scholarship would support not only my education, but my long term goal of giving back through compassionate, culturally informed healthcare.
