From a young age, I have always felt a strong connection to helping others, especially children. My journey into this field has been shaped by my experiences growing up in a school district where many kids struggle to keep up academically and physically. I have witnessed firsthand the challenges they face, and it has fueled my desire to make a difference in their lives. My mom works in education, and volunteering alongside her has given me a unique perspective on the importance of support and encouragement for these children.
My path toward occupational therapy was inspired by my godbrother, who is developmentally delayed. He is my tiny best friend, and I have seen how he has faced challenges with a brave spirit. His therapist was a remarkable person who showed great passion for her work. Watching her interact with him and seeing the positive impact she had on his development made me realize how powerful and transformative this profession can be. I want to be that kind of support for others, helping them overcome obstacles and achieve their goals.
Although I have not yet had the opportunity to work directly with children in a professional setting, my volunteer experiences have been incredibly rewarding. I have been fortunate to witness moments of joy and growth in the children I have worked with. These experiences have taught me the importance of patience, empathy, and understanding. I often find myself in awe of the resilience of these children and the incredible potential they possess. I believe that every child deserves the chance to succeed, and I want to be a part of that journey.
One of the most significant challenges I have faced is seeing the people in my community struggle due to a lack of access to proper healthcare and support services. This has shaped my purpose and motivated me to give back to my community. I want to ensure that children and families in Malvern receive the help they need to thrive. I plan to focus on understanding and listening to my patients in occupational therapy, using an approach to meet their unique needs. I believe that building strong relationships with my patients will be key to helping them achieve their goals.
In addition to my commitment to my future career, I also prioritize my faith and my studies. I believe that nothing is accomplished without God, and I strive to keep Him at the center of my life. Balancing my studies, my faith, and my desire to give back to others is essential to me. I know that this balance will help me grow both personally and professionally.
Financially, I come from a stable two-parent household, which I am very grateful for. However, I have two sisters, and one of them will be starting college just a year after I do. This scholarship would significantly ease the financial burden on my family and allow me to focus on my education and community service without added stress. It would help me attend college comfortably and pursue my dream.
In conclusion, my passion for helping children, especially those with special needs, drives me to pursue a career in occupational therapy. My experiences volunteering and my relationship with my godbrother have shaped my understanding of the importance of support and encouragement. I am committed to making a difference in the lives of those in my community, ensuring they receive the care and services they need. With the help of this scholarship, I can focus on my studies, fulfilling my purpose and making a positive impact in the world.

The field of Kinesiology offers a unique opportunity to incorporate my passion for helping others with my interest in health and wellness. As I embark on my academic journey, I am eager to pursue a degree that will prepare me for a career as either an Occupational Therapist or a Pediatric Sports Medicine doctor. My commitment to making a positive impact on my community drives my desire to work with children and support their physical and emotional well-being.
My family has always been my greatest inspiration. Specifically my mother, she has instilled in me the values of compassion, hard work, and the importance of giving back. Growing up, I witnessed the challenges faced by many in my community, particularly among African Americans who have fallen behind educationally. This has fueled my passion to ensure that children in my community receive the resources and support they deserve.
If I become an Occupational Therapist, my goal is to empower children to reach their full potential. I want to create an environment where they can thrive, regardless of their circumstances. I believe that every child deserves access to quality care and support, and I am committed to making that a reality. By working closely with families, I will help children develop the skills they need to succeed, both physically and emotionally.
On the other hand, if I pursue a career as a Pediatric Sports Medicine doctor, I aim to ensure that young athletes feel heard and respected during their healing processes. I understand that injuries can be devastating or children, and I want to be the one who helps them navigate their recovery with empathy and understanding. I want to create a safe space where they can express their fears and concerns, knowing that they have a supportive advocate in their corner.
I have strong communication skills and active listening abilities, which I believe are essential in the medical field. I have a big heart for children, and I genuinely enjoy spending time with them. Whether it is playing games, helping with homework, or simply being a comforting presence, I strive to connect with kids on a personal level. This connection will be important in my future career, as I work to build trust and rapport with my young patients.
My faith in Jesus Christ is a guiding force in my life. I believe that He has called me to help those around me, and I trust that He will lead me exactly where I need to be in this process. Surrounding myself with fellow Christians is important to me, which is why I have chosen to attend Ouachita Baptist University. I am excited to be part of a community that shares my values and supports my journey.
In conclusion, my chosen course of study in Kinesiology is not just a career path for me; it is a calling to make a meaningful difference in the lives of children in my community. Whether as an Occupational Therapist or a Pediatric Sports Medicine doctor, I am committed to helping children thrive and ensuring they receive the care and respect they deserve. With my skills, faith, and passion, I am ready to take on this challenge and make a positive impact on the world.

Ever since I can remember I have been deeply passionate about pursuing a career in the medical field, specifically in Pediatric Sports Medicine. From a young age, I have been fascinated by the human body and how it functions, but my desire to help others and support their safe recovery has been the driving force in my life. I have seen firsthand how injuries can impact my family and those around me, and I want to be the one who helps heal and guide them through their recovery journeys.
Growing up, I was always surrounded by sports and physical activities. My family encouraged me to stay active, and I participated in various sports throughout my childhood. However, I also witnessed the injuries that came with these activities. I remember when my younger sister had gotten hurt in cheer. The pain she experienced was tough to watch, and I felt helpless. It was during this time that I realized how crucial it is to have compassionate and knowledgeable healthcare professionals who can help young athletes recover and return to their passions. This experience fueled my interest in Pediatric Sports Medicine, where I can combine my love for sports with my desire to help children heal.
My family has been my greatest inspiration in this journey. They have always emphasized the importance of caring for one another and supporting each other through difficult times. Watching my loved ones face health challenges has shown me the importance of compassionate care. I want to be a source of support for children and their families during difficult times, helping them regain their strength and confidence. I believe that every child deserves the chance to recover fully and return to the activities they love.
In addition to my family’s influence, I have developed strong communication skills and a natural ability to listen to others. I have always been great with kids, and wherever a baby is, I seem to be drawn to them. I enjoy spending time with children, whether it is playing games, helping with homework, or simply being there to listen. This connection with children fuels my passion for Pediatric Sports Medicine, where I can create a comforting environment for young patients and their families. I want to ensure that they feel heard and understood during their recovery process.
My faith in Jesus Christ guides me in all that I do. I believe that I am called to help those around me to the best of my ability. This calling motivates me to pursue a career in medicine, where I can make a meaningful difference in the lives of young patients and their families. I know that my faith will provide me with the strength and resilience needed to face the challenges that come with a medical career.
In conclusion, my journey toward a career in medicine is fueled by my desire to help others, my family’s inspiration, and my faith. I am committed to becoming a compassionate healthcare professional who supports children in their recovery and helps them thrive. I believe that through my work in Pediatric Sports Medicine, I can make a lasting impact on the lives of young athletes and their families, guiding them toward a healthier and happier future.

As a child, I dreamed of becoming a doctor. The idea of helping people heal and improve their lives fascinated me. I pictured myself in a white coat, making a difference in the world. However, as I grew older, I discovered a career path that felt like an even better fit for me: occupational therapy. Now, as a high school senior with a better understanding, I am excited to pursue this path and help people gain strength and independence.
My interest in occupational therapy developed as I learned more about how it empowers people to live their lives to the fullest. I remember seeing occupational therapists work with my god brother, helping him regain the ability to perform everyday tasks that many of us take for granted. This hands-on approach to helping people achieve independence encouraged me deeply.
In high school, I took and take courses in science that expanded my understanding of the human body and how it functions. These classes challenged me and also helped me to decide to pursue my passion in this field. I am eager to continue my education at Ouachita Baptist University, where I plan to major in kinesiology and pursue a career in occupational therapy.
Alongside my interest in occupational therapy, I have developed a passion for social work and mental health counseling. I believe that physical health and mental well-being are deeply interconnected, and I am committed to supporting people in a helpful way. As a Black woman, I am particularly aware of the unique challenges faced by underprivileged communities, and I am determined to use my education to make a positive difference and help others.
While my childhood dream of becoming a doctor has evolved, the true desire to help others remains the same. I am excited about the possibility of combining my interests in occupational therapy, social work, and mental health to create a career that is both fulfilling and impactful.
In conclusion, my journey from aspiring doctor to future occupational therapist has been guided by a consistent desire to help others. This dream has shaped my educational experience and inspired me to make a difference in people's lives. I am committed to supporting others in gaining strength and independence, and I am eager to continue my journey in college. This scholarship would be a tremendous help in achieving my goals, and I am grateful for the opportunity to share my story.
Ryan Yebba Memorial Mental Health Scholarship
My name is Rian Hughes, and I am a high school senior deeply committed to advocating for progress and social change, especially in addressing bullying and harassment in K-12 schools. I am applying for the Women in Healthcare Scholarship because I am passionate about mental health and want to contribute to a supportive environment for young people.
Bullying and harassment are issues that hit close to home for me. Throughout high school, I have seen the toll they take on students' mental health, including anxiety, depression, and a loss of self-worth. I have always believed in the power of standing up for others. I encouraged open discussions about the effects of bullying and promoted kindness campaigns to foster a sense of community and support among students. I have found that when students feel heard and understood, they are more likely to reach out for help and support their peers.
My interest in pursuing a career in mental health stems from these experiences. I plan to major in Kinesiology and minor in Social work. These fields align with my desire to help individuals heal and thrive, both physically and mentally. I want to work with children and adolescents, providing them with the tools and support they need to overcome challenges related to bullying and mental health. I believe that early intervention is key to preventing long-term mental health issues and helping young people build resilience and confidence.
One of the significant issues I have noticed is the complex process of accessing mental health treatment for young people. Families often face barriers in finding and utilizing the right resources, such as long wait times, lack of information, and financial constraints. My goal is to simplify this process and ensure that every student has access to the mental health care they need. I envision a system where mental health services are integrated into the school environment, making them more accessible and less stigmatized. By normalizing mental health care, we can encourage more students to seek help without fear of judgment.
To achieve this, I plan to advocate for policies that require schools to have dedicated mental health professionals on staff. These professionals would provide immediate support and work closely with students facing bullying and harassment. Additionally, I aim to develop partnerships between schools and local mental health organizations to create a seamless network of care. This collaboration would ensure that students receive comprehensive support tailored to their individual needs.
By fostering a culture of openness and support, I believe we can make significant strides in addressing the mental health needs of young people. With this Scholarship, I hope to further my education and contribute to creating a more supportive environment for students struggling with bullying and mental health challenges. I am committed to being a part of the change and making a positive impact in the lives of those who need it most. I am eager to use my education and experiences to advocate for a brighter future for all students.

Resilience is the ability to bounce back from challenges and adversity, and it is a quality that has been a significant part of my life. As a high school senior with a 3.85 GPA, I have faced my share of obstacles, but I have always tried to use these experiences to inspire others around me.
Growing up as a Black woman, I have encountered situations where I felt underestimated or overlooked. However, instead of letting these experiences discourage me, I have used them as motivation to work harder and prove to myself and others that I can achieve my goals. One example of this resilience was when I struggled with a particularly challenging science class. I found the material difficult and often felt like giving up. However, I was determined to pursue my interest in kinesiology and occupational therapy, fields that require a strong foundation in science.
I spent extra time studying, sought help from my teacher, and formed a study group with classmates. My efforts paid off, and not only did I improve my grade, but I also inspired a friend who was having a tough time in the same class. We both worked hard Together, we encouraged each other and celebrated our progress.
This experience taught me that resilience is not just about overcoming challenges for oneself but also about lifting others up along the way. It showed me the importance of community and support, which are crucial elements in the fields of social work and counseling that I am passionate about. I realized that by sharing my journey, I could motivate others to persevere through their own struggles.
I hope to continue inspiring others through my journey in college, whether it is by helping a classmate understand a difficult concept or by being a role model for younger students who may face similar challenges. Resilience is a quality I carry with me, and I believe it will help me succeed in my future studies at the University of Central Arkansas or Ouachita Baptist University.
In pursuing a career in mental health and counseling, I want to help others build their resilience, just as I have. By sharing my experiences and offering support, I aim to empower others to overcome their challenges and achieve their dreams. This scholarship would not only support my education but also allow me to continue inspiring resilience in those around me, helping them to see that setbacks can be stepping stones to success.

I want to be someone who helps others overcome physical and mental challenges, empowering them to lead fulfilling lives. I believe that success is not just about personal achievements but also about contributing positively to the community.
One particular experience that solidified my interest in these fields was volunteering at a local community center. I spent time assisting in programs for children and it was here that I truly saw the impact that patience, understanding, and encouragement can have on individuals. Seeing the smiles on the children's faces when they achieved something they thought was impossible was incredibly rewarding. It reinforced my desire to pursue a career where I could help people realize their potential and improve their quality of life.

By pursuing my education and career goals, I hope to contribute positively to the lives of individuals and the broader community. Nabi Nicole Grant Memorial Scholarship
At the beginning of my sophomore year's second semester, my mom underwent her second hip replacement surgery. It was a challenging time for our family, as she needed a lot of care and support during her recovery. Things took a turn for the worse when she got very sick and developed pneumonia while in the hospital. This made her stay an additional two weeks, during which she was wrongly treated and felt like she was experiencing near-death symptoms. Balancing my schoolwork with helping out at home felt overwhelming, and I often found myself stretched thin. It was during this period that I leaned heavily on my faith to help navigate through the difficulties.
I have always been a Christian, and my faith has been a guiding force in my life. However, this experience deepened my reliance on it. I remember feeling anxious about how I would manage everything—my studies, my responsibilities at home, and my commitments to extracurricular activities. One evening, feeling particularly stressed, I turned to prayer, seeking strength and guidance. It was a moment of clarity that helped me find peace amidst the chaos.
With my faith as a foundation, I began to approach the situation with a new perspective. I realized the importance of prioritizing and managing my time effectively. I also learned that it was okay to ask for help. I spoke with my teachers about my situation, and they were understanding, offering support and flexibility with deadlines. My friends also pitched in, helping me with notes and study sessions when I needed it most. This experience highlighted the importance of community and the power of leaning on others.
Relying on my faith allowed me to focus on what truly mattered and let go of the things I could not control. As my mom's recovery progressed, I found a balance that allowed me to keep up with my studies and continue participating in activities that I enjoyed. This period of my life reinforced my desire to pursue a career in social work or mental health counseling, where I can offer support to others facing their own challenges.
Ultimately, relying on my faith not only helped me overcome this difficult time but also shaped my future aspirations. It taught me resilience, the importance of community, and the power of hope. These lessons will guide me as I continue my education and move towards a career dedicated to helping others.
