      Growing up in New Jersey has shaped every part of who I am. I was born in Jersey City, surrounded by noise, diversity, and the feeling that everyone was always moving toward something. At the age of 12 , my family moved to Iselin. The shift felt huge—suddenly I was in a quieter town, a new school, a new environment, and I had to figure out where I fit. That move became one of the most defining challenges of my life, because it forced me to rebuild my sense of belonging from the ground up. In Jersey City, I never had to think about identity. Everyone around me came from somewhere different, and that felt normal. But in Iselin, I found myself caught between cultures and expectations. Moving towns added a third: learning how to start over socially and academically while still supporting my family. I helped my parents with school forms, paperwork, and college planning long before I even understood what college truly meant. I often felt like I was translating life for all of us. There were moments when I felt out of place—too new, too quiet, too unsure. But New Jersey taught me resilience. It taught me that belonging isn’t instant; it’s something you grow into. I found that growth through dance. Garba became the place where I slowly stepped out of my shell. I started off standing at the edge of the circle, copying steps, hoping no one noticed my nerves. Over time, I became someone who could lead others confidently. One night, when a friend panicked as the music sped up, I told her, “Stay with me. The circle will catch you.” That moment showed me the kind of person I was becoming—steady, patient, and able to guide others even when I was still learning myself. Balancing school, responsibilities at home, and the pressure of planning for my future hasn’t been easy. But those challenges shaped my determination. They taught me how to advocate for myself, how to stay focused, and how to keep moving even when things feel uncertain. These experiences are what push me toward my goal of studying biology and eventually working in healthcare. I want to support people the same way my community supported me—with empathy, consistency, and care. This scholarship would make a real difference for my family. College is expensive, and while my parents work hard, the financial strain is real. Receiving this support would allow me to focus on my education instead of worrying about how we’ll afford it. It would bring me one step closer to becoming a healthcare professional who gives back to the communities that shaped me. Growing up in New Jersey—from Jersey City to Iselin—taught me resilience, compassion, and pride in my journey.       Most of what I know about science didn’t come from a lab or a textbook — it came from taking care of my grandpa. When his health started declining, our whole routine changed. Suddenly I was helping him manage medications, checking his blood pressure, organizing his appointments, and making sure he stayed safe at home. None of it was easy, but it pushed me to think creatively and use science in ways I never expected. Another challenge was keeping track of his blood pressure. His readings changed a lot, and he didn’t always notice when something was off. I started recording his numbers in a spreadsheet and graphing them over time. When I compared the patterns with what he ate, how much he moved, or when his medications changed, I started noticing trends. Those charts helped us explain things clearly to his doctor and catch issues before they became emergencies. Through all of this, I realized that creative thinking and science go hand in hand. I wasn’t building medical devices or running experiments, but I was using observation, problem‑solving, and basic scientific reasoning to make his life safer and more manageable. Every time something didn’t work, I adjusted it. Every time he struggled with a task, I tried to understand why and find a better way. Caring for him taught me patience, responsibility, and how powerful small innovations can be when they’re made with someone’s real needs in mind. These experiences are the reason I want to pursue a degree in science, especially in a health‑related or biomedical field. I’ve seen how confusing and overwhelming medical care can be for families. Not everyone has someone who can help them organize their medications or understand their health data. And not every family can afford expensive tools or devices. I want to help change that. I believe society benefits when science is used to make everyday life easier, safer, and more accessible — especially for older adults and people with chronic conditions. Whether it’s designing affordable monitoring tools, improving patient education, or creating technology that supports independence, I want to work on solutions that are practical and compassionate. My goal is to help people feel more in control of their health, not intimidated by it. Looking back, the systems I built for my grandpa were simple, but they made a real difference. They reduced stress, prevented mistakes, and helped him stay independent longer. Those moments showed me the kind of impact I want to make on a larger scale. By studying science, I hope to turn the care I gave at home into a career focused on improving lives through thoughtful, human‑centered innovation.
