My name is Rhylee Adviento and I am a student at Hendrick Hudson High School, located in Montrose, NY. I am currently a Senior, looking to study medicine after high school. I worked as a 2023 Summer Youth Experience intern at the New York Presbyterian Hudson Valley Hospital. This program has been an absolute honor. Not only do I get to learn about the medical field, but I also got to meet new people and build a community along with way as well. I truly enjoyed my time spent here and I am super happy to have had such a supportive team. I also babysit children, providing a safe and nurturing environment. I transport, cook, play, and teach kids valuable life skills. Furthermore, I work at 105 Twenty, greeting customers, create reservations, and assist them with takeout orders. In addition, I help out my community by attending sports-related events at my school, as well as volunteering with events in my community and helping kids with tutoring.

From The Republic by Plato, Book VII: "The soul of man is like a state, and the man who is not trained in philosophy is like a man who is enslaved in the body of a savage and has no understanding of true reality." Essay: In this passage, Plato uses a metaphor of the soul as a "state" to explore the transformative power of philosophical training. At its core, his underlying meaning emphasizes the critical role of philosophy in liberating the soul from the constraints of ignorance, much as a just state liberates its citizens from tyranny. The "man who is not trained in philosophy" represents the individual who remains chained to mere appearances, like the prisoners in his allegory of the cave, unaware of the higher, immutable truths of the Forms. Such a person is likened to a "man enslaved in the body of a savage," meaning that without philosophical wisdom, the individual is ruled by base instincts and false beliefs, much like a barbarian subject to carnal desires or societal chaos. Plato's statement critiques the lack of philosophical education in society, asserting that the unexamined life is a form of intellectual enslavement. Philosophy, for Plato, is not merely an intellectual pursuit; it is the means by which one transcends the limits of material experience and comes into alignment with the ultimate truths of existence, which can only be comprehended by reason and intellect. The soul, when untrained, remains ignorant, subject to the whims of the body and the impermanence of sensory experience. Only through philosophy can the soul achieve true understanding and thus liberaz. Plato's comparison of the soul to a state also highlights the importance of order and structure in the development of the individual. Just as a well-ordered state requires a wise ruler (philosopher-king) to maintain harmony and justice, the soul requires the rational part of the mind to guide and govern the other faculties. The analogy implies that the soul’s inherent disorder, when untrained, mirrors a state without just leadership: a state where the appetites and desires reign unchecked, causing internal conflict and moral decay. Philosophy serves as the ruler in this analogy, ensuring that the individual’s rational capacities direct their desires and actions toward the higher good. Without philosophy, the soul is analogous to a chaotic, tyrannical state—driven by base instincts and unable to recognize its true purpose. This distinction between philosophy and ignorance also reveals Plato’s deeper concern with the nature of reality itself. Those who are not philosophically trained live in a state of illusion, trapped in the "cave" of sensory perception, where only fleeting, imperfect images are known. Philosophy, for Plato, is the only means of perceiving the eternal truths that exist beyond the realm of material experience. Therefore, training in philosophy is not just intellectual exercise; it is a profound liberation, enabling the soul to escape the tyranny of ignorance and move toward enlightenment. Ultimately, Plato argues that only through philosophical inquiry can a person achieve a fully realized existence, grounded in knowledge, virtue, and truth. Plato's vision of the soul’s potential liberation through philosophy also implies a transformative journey—one that transcends mere intellectual understanding to encompass moral and spiritual development. In this light, philosophy is not just about acquiring knowledge, but about cultivating a virtuous character that aligns the soul with the Good, the highest form of reality. By training in philosophy, the individual reshapes their very being, shedding the limitations of ignorance and impulse, and becoming more attuned to truth and justice. The allegory of the cave further illustrates this journey, where the philosopher, once enlightened, returns to guide others, emphasizing that true knowledge is not simply for personal gain but for the benefit of society as a whole. Ultimately, Plato argues that only by transforming the soul through philosophy can one achieve true freedom—freedom from ignorance, chaos, and the tyranny of the unexamined life.

My understanding of mental health has deeply shaped my interest in becoming a music therapist, even though my primary academic pursuit is nursing. Throughout high school, I have come to recognize the profound impact mental health has on every aspect of a person's life. As an Asian woman, I have seen how mental health is often stigmatized in my community, and I have witnessed the struggles of friends and family who have faced mental health challenges without adequate support. These experiences have fueled my desire to find ways to help people heal and thrive, and music therapy stands out as a powerful tool for achieving this. Music has always been a significant part of my life. It is a universal language that transcends barriers and connects people. I have seen firsthand how music can change a person's mood, bring back memories, and provide comfort during difficult times. This personal connection to music, combined with my interest in mental health, has led me to explore how music therapy can be used to support mental well-being. In my research, I have learned that music therapy is an evidence-based practice that uses music to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs. It is particularly effective in helping individuals with mental health issues, as it provides a non-verbal outlet for expression and can be tailored to meet the unique needs of each person. This flexibility and adaptability make music therapy a valuable complement to traditional mental health treatments. One of the aspects of music therapy that I find most compelling is its ability to empower individuals. By engaging in music-making or listening, people can gain a sense of control and agency over their emotions and experiences. This empowerment can lead to increased self-esteem and confidence, which are crucial components of mental health recovery. As I pursue a career in nursing, I am committed to integrating holistic approaches to care, including music therapy, to address the diverse needs of patients. I believe that understanding and supporting mental health is essential to providing comprehensive care, and music therapy offers a unique way to do this. By incorporating music therapy into my nursing practice, I hope to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for individuals dealing with mental health challenges. Receiving the Sunni E. Fagan Memorial Music Scholarship would allow me to further explore the intersection of music therapy and mental health. It would provide me with the resources to gain a deeper understanding of how music can be used as a therapeutic tool and help me develop the skills necessary to support individuals in their mental health journeys. In conclusion, my understanding of mental health has driven my interest in music therapy as a means of healing and support. By combining my passion for music with my commitment to mental health, I hope to make a positive impact in the lives of others. The opportunity to study music therapy alongside my nursing education would be invaluable, and I am eager to contribute to the field in meaningful ways.

My name is Rhylee Adviento, and I am a high school senior with a passion for nursing. As I look forward to attending Northeastern University, I am excited to pursue a career that allows me to make a positive impact on the world, particularly in the field of mental health. My journey with mental health has deeply influenced my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations, shaping the person I am today. Growing up as an Asian woman, I have witnessed the stigma surrounding mental health in my community. Conversations about mental health were often avoided, and seeking help was sometimes viewed as a sign of weakness. This environment made me more determined to understand mental health better and to advocate for its importance. I believe that mental health is just as crucial as physical health, and everyone deserves access to the care and support they need. My experiences with mental health have taught me the value of empathy and understanding in relationships. I have learned that listening without judgment and offering support can make a significant difference in someone's life. These experiences have strengthened my relationships, as I strive to be a source of comfort and encouragement to my friends and family. I have also realized the importance of self-care and maintaining a healthy balance in my own life, which has helped me manage stress and maintain my well-being. In terms of career aspirations, my interest in nursing is closely tied to my desire to work in mental health. I am inspired by the impact that compassionate care can have on individuals facing mental health challenges. I want to be a nurse who not only provides medical care but also offers emotional support and understanding to patients. I am particularly interested in working with underserved communities, where access to mental health resources is often limited. By addressing these disparities, I hope to contribute to a more equitable healthcare system. At Northeastern University, I plan to take advantage of opportunities to deepen my understanding of mental health. I am eager to engage in research, internships, and community service projects that focus on mental health awareness and advocacy. By gaining hands-on experience and collaborating with others who share my passion, I aim to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to make a meaningful impact in the field. In the future, I hope to contribute to the destigmatization of mental health issues and to promote a more open and supportive dialogue around mental health. Whether it is through direct patient care, community outreach, or advocacy work, I am committed to making a positive difference in the lives of others. I believe that by fostering awareness and understanding, we can create a world where mental health is prioritized and everyone has the opportunity to thrive. Receiving the Autumn Davis Memorial Scholarship would be an incredible honor and would support me in my journey to become a nurse who champions mental health. I am grateful for the opportunity to share my story and to continue working towards a future where mental health is valued and accessible to all.

My name is Rhylee Adviento, and I am a senior in high school with a strong passion for pursuing a career in nursing. As an Asian woman, I have faced unique challenges that have shaped my journey and fueled my determination to make a difference in healthcare. Growing up, I often found myself as the only Asian student in my classes, which sometimes made me feel out of place. I learned to embrace my identity and use it as a strength, appreciating the diverse perspectives it brings. This experience taught me the importance of empathy and understanding, qualities I believe are essential in nursing. Academically, I have worked hard to maintain a GPA of 3.9, but it has not always been easy. My family has faced financial struggles, and there were times when I worried about how we would afford basic needs, let alone college tuition. My parents have worked tirelessly to provide for our family, and their sacrifices have instilled in me a strong work ethic and a desire to give back. Nursing is more than a career choice for me; it is a calling. I want to be there for others in their times of need, providing care and support when it matters most. Attending Northeastern University, with its excellent nursing program, is a dream that I am committed to making a reality. This scholarship would significantly alleviate the financial burden on my family and allow me to focus on my studies and clinical experiences. It would help me achieve my goal of becoming a nurse who can make a positive impact in the lives of patients and contribute to the healthcare community. Thank you for considering my application. I truly enjoyed my time here and am super happy to have had such a supportive team. I also babysit children, providing a safe and nurturing environment. I transport, cook, play, and teach the kids valuable life skills. Depression has significantly impacted my family of five and me. My sister and mother being depressed changes the mood of our day-to-day lives, and sometimes, performing everyday tasks can be challenging. My father, a doctor, really helps us stabilize our family and help with our mental health. He sets us up on the right path to do our daily tasks. He and I offer to take my sisters and me on a family trip or activity. My sister usually spends her whole day in her room if she is not working and is sleeping. My sister usually does not get out of bed, which is disheartening because she used to be up on her feet doing extra activities. I try my best to motivate her and encourage her to pick up a new hobby or activity to help her clear their mind and focus on the important aspects of life. Doing activities together helps clear the mind and sets us on a fresh path.  Anxiety has also had a significant impact on me, not only as a student but as a person as well. I get excessively caught up with everyday tasks, such as walking up the hallway at my high school, how I perform on tests, and even driving to school. Gardening with my father has also helped me with my anxiety by helping me clear my mind while focusing on the plants and succulents I care for. I love propagating, watering, and checking on the plants to ensure they're healthy and happy. Gardening is very similar to my life; if I don't try and maintain it, it will soon get unhealthy. Even though these mental illnesses are complex to tackle, I am very grateful that I have a support system that helps me through it.
