FinalistBio
My name is Rheagan, and I am a single mother to an 18-month-old son who has become my greatest motivation in life. Becoming a mother changed everything for me and inspired me to make positive changes for both myself and my child. After struggling with addiction in the past, I made the decision to get sober so I could be the mother my son deserves. That decision has transformed my life and given me a renewed sense of purpose.
Today, I am pursuing my college education to create a stable and successful future for my son and myself. Returning to school has not been easy, especially while balancing the responsibilities of raising a toddler on my own, but I am determined to succeed. I currently maintain a 4.0 GPA and work hard every day to continue achieving academic excellence.
My journey has taught me resilience, perseverance, and the importance of never giving up, even when circumstances are difficult. I am committed to bettering myself in every way possible so I can provide my son with opportunities and stability. Earning this scholarship would help me continue my education and move closer to my goal of building a better life for our family. I hope to show my son through my actions that no matter where you start, with hard work and determination, you can overcome challenges and create a brighter future.

Joe Gilroy "Plan Your Work, Work Your Plan" Scholarship
My primary goal is to complete my bachelor’s degree in business and use it to build long-term financial stability for myself and my son while creating a career that offers growth, flexibility, and security. As a single mother, I am not only focused on finishing my education, but also on making sure that every step I take supports a sustainable future where I can provide consistent care, housing stability, and opportunity for my child. My long-term goal is to secure a stable role in business—ideally in management, operations, or a remote-friendly position—where I can grow professionally while maintaining the flexibility needed to be present as a parent.
To reach this goal, my immediate plan is to continue full-time enrollment in my business program while maintaining my current 4.0 GPA. Academically, I plan to stay on track by dedicating structured study time during my son’s naps and after bedtime, as well as staying ahead on assignments to account for unexpected parenting responsibilities. Because I am a single parent, flexibility is essential, so I also plan my coursework in advance to avoid falling behind during emergencies, illness, or childcare gaps.
Financially, I currently work part-time to cover essential living expenses such as rent, utilities, groceries, transportation, and childcare-related costs. My current budget is extremely tight. On average, my monthly expenses include approximately $1,200–$1,500 for housing, $300–$500 for utilities and phone, $400–$600 for groceries, and additional variable costs such as diapers, childcare support, and transportation. Because childcare is both expensive and difficult to secure due to long waitlists, I often rely on flexible work arrangements instead of traditional full-time employment. At the moment, I work in a flexible role that allows me to earn income while only working a limited number of hours per week, but I am actively seeking remote or entry-level business-related work that aligns more closely with my long-term career goals.
In the short term, my plan includes continuing to apply for scholarships, grants, and financial aid to reduce the financial pressure of tuition and allow me to focus more fully on my education. Any scholarship support would directly reduce the number of hours I need to work, which would give me more time to dedicate to coursework and parenting. This would significantly improve my academic consistency and reduce stress, which is currently one of the biggest barriers I face.
In the long term, after completing my degree, my goal is to secure an entry-level position in business administration, operations, or management, ideally in a company that offers advancement opportunities and flexibility, such as hybrid or remote work. From there, I plan to gain experience, continue developing professional skills, and work toward higher-level roles that provide increased financial stability. I also remain open to entrepreneurship or building a small business in the future once I have more financial stability and experience.
All of these goals are built around a realistic understanding of my current responsibilities and limitations as a single mother. My plan is designed to be flexible while still structured enough to ensure progress. Each step—education, budgeting, work, and future career development—is connected to the same long-term vision: creating stability, breaking cycles of financial hardship, and providing a secure future for my son while building a career I can sustain and grow in over time.
Love Island Fan Scholarship
The “Heart Rate Reality” challenge transforms the Love Island villa into a high-stakes psychological experience designed to test attraction, loyalty, and emotional self-control under pressure. The entire villa is divided into two spaces: the Calm Zone, where couples sit together wearing visible heart-rate monitors, and the Chaos Zone, a dramatic performance stage filled with flashing lights, music, and surprise interactions. Every islander’s heart rate is displayed in real time on a shared screen, meaning everyone can see how each person reacts emotionally in the moment. The challenge begins with “First Impression Pulse,” where islanders watch anonymous silhouettes walk across a runway, only able to observe body shape, movement, and style without seeing faces. They must instantly decide whether they feel attracted or not, while their heart rate is monitored for spikes in physical reaction. After each silhouette, a twist reveal shows that the person they thought they were judging was not always who they assumed, exposing how quickly attraction can be influenced by bias and perception rather than reality. The second stage, “Temptation Interruptions,” places existing couples in the Calm Zone while bombshell islanders enter the Chaos Zone to perform a series of unexpected flirtation-based scenarios. These include slow dancing, intimate conversation prompts, and reading provocative “confession statements” designed to test emotional boundaries, such as suggesting secret crushes or hidden interest within the villa. Couples are forced to watch everything unfold together while holding hands, and their heart rates are tracked continuously to reveal hidden emotional responses, jealousy, excitement, or insecurity. The purpose is not just to see who reacts, but to reveal how strongly they react when they are not in control of the situation. The third stage, “Switch or Stay,” pushes islanders into a moment of isolation where they must choose between returning to their current partner or stepping through a door that leads to a surprise date with an unknown islander. Before making their choice, each islander is shown a summary of their own heart-rate spikes from the previous rounds, as well as their partner’s reactions, forcing them to confront evidence of emotional responses they may not have acknowledged. This creates tension between trust, insecurity, and curiosity, making the decision feel deeply personal rather than strategic. The final twist, “Truth Pulse Reveal,” exposes the full emotional data from the challenge, including who showed the strongest attraction responses, who remained emotionally steady under temptation, and who had hidden reactions that conflicted with their spoken words. Islanders are then asked to reflect on whether their emotional responses matched their behavior and whether they feel truly secure in their current couple. This forces honest conversations about loyalty, attraction, and emotional compatibility, often leading to recoupling decisions or strengthened bonds depending on how each person interprets their own reactions. The purpose of the “Heart Rate Reality” challenge is to strip away performance and force islanders to confront what they genuinely feel when pressure, attraction, and insecurity are amplified. Instead of relying on words alone, it uses physical reactions to reveal emotional truth, creating drama, vulnerability, and unexpected relationship shifts that redefine connections in the villa.
Sloane Stephens Doc & Glo Scholarship
The impact I want to make is rooted in my personal experiences with struggle, recovery, and rebuilding my life as a single mother. My vision for the future is to use my education in business to create stability for myself and my son while also contributing to a community where people feel supported, understood, and given real opportunities to succeed. I know what it feels like to be in a place where the future seems uncertain, and I want to be part of the reason someone else believes change is possible for them.
The people who inspire me most are my son and other individuals who are working to overcome difficult circumstances. My son is my daily motivation to keep pushing forward, even when life feels overwhelming. Everything I do is to create a better, more stable life for him. I also find inspiration in others who have overcome addiction, poverty, or instability and used education as a way to transform their lives. Their stories remind me that where you start in life does not determine where you can end up, and that perseverance can lead to real change.
Through my education in business, I hope to build a career that allows me to grow professionally while also giving me the tools to help others. One way I plan to give back is by creating or working in organizations that support individuals who are trying to rebuild their lives after hardship. This could include supporting programs that help people in recovery, single parents returning to school, or individuals who are struggling to find stable employment. I understand how difficult it can be to navigate these challenges without guidance, support, or resources, and I want to help make those paths more accessible for others.
I also hope to use my education to support my local community by promoting financial literacy, career development, and access to opportunity. Many people face barriers not because they lack motivation, but because they lack access to information, support systems, or resources. By applying what I learn in business, I want to help create environments where people are empowered to make informed decisions about their futures and are given the tools they need to succeed.
In the long term, I would love to be in a position where I can mentor others who are in situations similar to mine. As someone who has experienced addiction, recovery, and the challenges of being a single parent, I understand how isolating those experiences can feel. I want to be someone who can offer encouragement, guidance, and hope to individuals who may feel stuck or unsure of how to move forward. Even small support and understanding can make a meaningful difference in someone’s life.
Ultimately, my goal is to use my education not only to improve my own life but to create a ripple effect of positive change in my community. I want to show that it is possible to overcome hardship and build something meaningful from it. The change I am determined to create is one where people are not defined by their past, but instead supported in building a stronger future. Through perseverance, education, and compassion, I hope to contribute to a world where more people feel seen, supported, and capable of achieving their goals.
Andrea N. Santore Scholarship
I chose a career path in business because I want to build a stable, flexible, and sustainable future that allows me to support my son while also creating long-term financial independence. As a single mother, I have learned firsthand how important stability is, not just financially, but also in terms of having control over my time and opportunities. Business feels like a field that can provide both growth and flexibility, whether through management, entrepreneurship, or remote career opportunities.
My decision to pursue business also comes from my life experiences. After graduating high school in 2020, I struggled with fentanyl addiction for several years, and during that time, I lost direction and confidence in my future. When I became pregnant in 2024, everything changed. Becoming a mother gave me a new purpose and a reason to rebuild my life. I realized that in order to provide the life my son deserves, I needed to choose a career path that would give me long-term stability and the ability to grow. Business stood out to me because it applies to nearly every industry and offers a wide range of opportunities for advancement.
Another reason I chose business is because I am motivated by the idea of building something for myself and my family. I want to understand how organizations operate, how decisions are made, and how successful businesses are built and sustained. Learning these skills will not only help me in a professional setting but also give me the knowledge to potentially create my own opportunities in the future. I want to be in a position where I am not limited by circumstances and where I can create financial security through hard work and knowledge.
Earning a degree in business will have a major impact on my life by opening doors that are currently difficult to access. Right now, I work part-time while raising my son and attending school, often balancing multiple responsibilities just to meet basic needs. A business degree will give me the qualifications and skills needed to move into more stable and higher-paying positions that can support my family long-term. It will also give me the ability to pursue career paths that offer growth, leadership opportunities, and potentially remote or flexible work environments, which are very important as a single parent.
Beyond financial stability, this degree represents personal growth and transformation. It is proof of how far I have come since overcoming addiction and choosing to rebuild my life. Every class I complete brings me closer to a future where I can provide my son with security, consistency, and opportunities I did not always have. I want him to grow up seeing that education and perseverance can change a person’s life, no matter their past.
In the long term, I hope to use my business education not only to improve my own situation but also to help others. I want to be someone who demonstrates resilience, leadership, and determination. Whether I work in management, entrepreneurship, or another area of business, my goal is to create a life built on stability, purpose, and growth. This degree is a key step in turning that vision into reality and creating a future where both my son and I can thrive.
Organic Formula Shop Single Parent Scholarship
The most challenging part of being both a student and a single parent is the constant pressure of having to meet multiple responsibilities at the same time without the support system that many others rely on. As a mother to an 18-month-old son, my day is centered around his needs, while also trying to stay on top of school assignments, work responsibilities, and basic life tasks. There is no separation between roles—parenting, student life, and financial responsibilities all overlap throughout the day, which makes time management and energy one of my biggest struggles.
One of the hardest aspects is the lack of predictable time. As a student, consistency is important for success, but as a parent, especially to a toddler, nothing is predictable. My son’s needs come first at all times, whether he is sick, needs attention, or simply requires care during the day. This means I often complete schoolwork late at night or during short windows of time throughout the day. There are times when I feel exhausted and overwhelmed, trying to balance studying after long days of parenting and working. Even basic tasks like focusing on reading or writing assignments can become difficult when I am mentally and physically drained.
Financial pressure also adds to the challenge. As a single parent, I am responsible for providing everything for my son while also investing in my education. I work part-time to cover essential expenses, but balancing work hours with school deadlines and parenting responsibilities can be extremely stressful. Childcare is expensive and often unavailable due to long waitlists, which limits my ability to work more traditional or stable jobs. These circumstances often force me to make difficult decisions about how to divide my time and energy.
Emotionally, the hardest part is carrying the weight of responsibility alone. There is no backup when I need help, and that can make the challenges feel even heavier. However, despite these difficulties, my son is also my greatest motivation. He is the reason I continue pushing forward even on the most exhausting days. I want to show him that no matter how difficult life becomes, it is possible to keep going and build something better.
This scholarship would make a meaningful difference in both my academic journey and my ability to provide for my son. Financial support would reduce the pressure of having to constantly balance work and school just to meet basic needs. It would allow me to dedicate more focused time and energy to my education, which would improve my academic performance and reduce the stress that comes with financial instability.
More importantly, this scholarship would help create long-term stability for my future and my child’s future. By continuing my education without as much financial strain, I will be able to complete my degree more efficiently and move into a career that provides sustainable income and opportunities for growth. My goal is to build a stable and secure life where I can provide my son with consistency, support, and opportunities I did not always have.
Ultimately, this scholarship represents more than financial assistance—it represents the opportunity to continue building a better life. It would allow me to stay focused on my education, remain committed to my goals, and create a future where my son can thrive. I am determined to use every opportunity I am given to break cycles of hardship and build a foundation of stability, growth, and hope for both of us.
Champions Of A New Path Scholarship
I believe I deserve this scholarship because I am not only working to change my own life, but I am actively breaking cycles that have held me back in the past while building a stable future for my son. What sets me apart from other applicants is not simply my circumstances, but the way I have chosen to respond to them. I have faced addiction, single motherhood, financial hardship, and the challenge of returning to school after years away, yet I have continued to move forward with determination and consistency.
In 2020, I graduated high school with hopes for my future, but shortly after, I became addicted to fentanyl. For several years, addiction controlled my life and made it difficult to pursue my goals. During that time, I struggled with self-doubt and felt disconnected from the person I once wanted to become. However, in 2024, when I found out I was pregnant with my son, everything changed. That moment gave me a sense of purpose that was stronger than my addiction. I made the decision to get sober and begin rebuilding my life, not just for myself, but for my child.
Since then, I have committed fully to my recovery, my education, and my responsibilities as a mother. I am currently raising my 18-month-old son as a single parent while pursuing my degree and maintaining a 4.0 GPA. This is not an easy balance. I do not have the advantage of a strong support system or reliable childcare, and I often have to complete schoolwork late at night after my son is asleep. I also work part-time in order to provide for my basic needs while continuing my education. Despite these challenges, I have remained consistent and disciplined in my academic performance.
What gives me an advantage compared to other applicants is not that my journey has been easier, but that I have learned to succeed despite significant barriers. I have developed resilience, time management skills, and a strong sense of purpose that continues to drive me forward even during difficult times. My experiences have taught me how to remain focused under pressure and how to stay committed to long-term goals even when immediate circumstances are overwhelming.
In addition, my motivation is deeply personal and ongoing. My son is my daily reminder of why this opportunity matters. Every class I take and every assignment I complete is connected to his future. I am not pursuing education for personal achievement alone, but to create stability, security, and opportunity for my child. That responsibility gives me a level of dedication and focus that cannot be easily matched.
This scholarship would not only ease financial stress, but it would also allow me to continue my education with greater stability and fewer obstacles. I am not asking for an opportunity because I feel entitled to it, but because I am committed to using it fully and turning it into long-term success. I am determined to build a life that reflects the progress I have already made and to use my story as proof that change is possible.
I believe I deserve this scholarship because I have already demonstrated that I will not give up, even when the circumstances are extremely difficult. I am building a future through discipline, resilience, and purpose, and I am committed to continuing that path until I reach my goals.
Jerrye Chesnes Memorial Scholarship
One of the greatest challenges I have faced in returning to school was overcoming the obstacles created by addiction and rebuilding my life after several difficult years. I graduated high school in 2020 with plans and goals for my future, but shortly after graduation, my life took a different path than I had imagined. I became addicted to fentanyl, and for the next several years, addiction controlled many aspects of my life. During that time, I lost confidence in myself and struggled to see a future beyond the challenges I was facing. I wanted to get sober and improve my life, but despite multiple attempts, I found it difficult to break free from the cycle of addiction.
For several years, returning to school felt impossible. I was focused on surviving each day and dealing with the consequences of addiction. As time passed, I began to feel like I had fallen behind while others my age were moving forward with their education, careers, and personal goals. This created feelings of disappointment and self-doubt. I questioned whether I would ever be able to return to school or accomplish the things I once dreamed of achieving.
Everything changed in 2024 when I found out I was pregnant with my son. Learning that I was going to become a mother completely changed my perspective on life. For the first time in years, I had a reason bigger than myself to fight for. I knew I wanted to give my son a stable, loving, and secure future, and I realized that I needed to make significant changes in my own life in order to do that. Becoming a mother gave me the motivation and purpose I had been missing. It inspired me to choose sobriety and begin rebuilding my future.
Returning to school after several years away presented its own challenges. I had to overcome fears about whether I was capable of succeeding academically after being out of the classroom for so long. I worried that I had forgotten important skills or that I would struggle to keep up with coursework. At the same time, I was adjusting to life as a new mother and learning how to balance parenting responsibilities with educational goals.
As a single mother, finding time for school can be difficult. My son depends on me for everything, which means I often complete assignments during naps, after bedtime, or whenever I can find a few free moments throughout the day. There are times when I feel exhausted from balancing school, work, household responsibilities, and parenting. However, those challenges have also strengthened my determination to succeed.
One of the accomplishments I am most proud of is maintaining a 4.0 GPA while raising my son and pursuing my degree. Achieving academic success has helped rebuild the confidence that addiction once took away from me. It has shown me that I am capable of accomplishing difficult goals when I remain committed and focused.
Returning to school represents much more than earning a degree. It symbolizes the life I have worked so hard to build since becoming sober. My son gave me the motivation to change my future, and my education is helping me turn that change into reality. While the journey has not been easy, overcoming addiction and returning to school has taught me resilience, perseverance, and the importance of never giving up on yourself, no matter how difficult the circumstances may seem.

"Man is disturbed not by things, but by the views which he takes of them." — Epictetus, *Enchiridion* (The Handbook)
Epictetus's statement, "Man is disturbed not by things, but by the views which he takes of them," argues that people's suffering is often caused not by the events they experience but by the meaning they assign to those events. The philosopher suggests that while individuals cannot always control what happens in their lives, they can control how they interpret and respond to those experiences. This idea is especially meaningful to me because it relates directly to my experiences with addiction, recovery, motherhood, and pursuing higher education. Through these experiences, I have learned that while I could not change my past or the hardships I faced, I could change how I viewed them and what I chose to do moving forward.
When I struggled with fentanyl addiction beginning in 2020, I often viewed myself through the lens of failure. Every relapse felt like proof that I was incapable of changing. I interpreted my addiction as evidence that I would never be able to build a successful future for myself. Looking back, I can see that my suffering was not caused solely by addiction itself but also by the beliefs I had developed about who I was because of it. I allowed my mistakes to define my identity. According to Epictetus, it was not only the circumstances that disturbed me but also my interpretation of those circumstances. By believing that my failures determined my future, I trapped myself in hopelessness.
Everything changed when I found out I was pregnant with my son in 2024. For the first time, I began to view my life differently. The circumstances of my past had not changed, but my perspective had. Instead of seeing myself as someone who would never overcome addiction, I began to see myself as someone capable of becoming a mother, building a future, and creating a better life. Epictetus's message suggests that strength comes from changing how we understand our experiences, and that is exactly what happened in my life. My son gave me a reason to see possibility instead of failure. The challenges remained, but my interpretation of those challenges changed completely.
The passage also relates to the difficulties of being a single mother. There are many moments when raising a child alone feels overwhelming. Financial stress, childcare concerns, work responsibilities, and school deadlines can easily become sources of frustration and discouragement. If I focus only on the hardships, it is easy to feel defeated. However, Epictetus argues that people have the power to choose how they view their circumstances. Rather than seeing motherhood as an obstacle to my goals, I choose to view it as my greatest motivation. My son is not the reason my journey is difficult; he is the reason I continue moving forward despite the difficulties. This shift in perspective has allowed me to approach challenges with determination rather than hopelessness.
The philosopher's message is equally relevant to my experience as a college student. Pursuing higher education as a single mother requires sacrifice and perseverance. There are nights when I stay awake after my son goes to sleep to complete assignments, and there are days when balancing responsibilities feels impossible. It would be easy to view these challenges as reasons to quit. However, I have learned to see them differently. Each assignment completed, each course passed, and each semester finished represents progress toward a better future. By viewing obstacles as opportunities for growth rather than barriers to success, I have been able to maintain a 4.0 GPA and continue pursuing my goals.
Another important aspect of Epictetus's statement is the idea that true power comes from controlling one's response rather than controlling external circumstances. I cannot control the fact that I am a single mother. I cannot change my past struggles with addiction, nor can I eliminate every obstacle that comes with pursuing a degree. What I can control is how I respond to those realities. I can choose to continue working hard, remain focused on my goals, and refuse to let difficult circumstances define my future. This is the type of strength Epictetus describes throughout his philosophy.
Ultimately, the underlying meaning of this passage is that human beings possess the ability to transform their lives by changing how they interpret their experiences. My journey through addiction, recovery, motherhood, and higher education has shown me the truth of Epictetus's words. The events of my life have not always been easy, but I have learned that my perspective determines whether those events become obstacles or opportunities. By choosing to view my struggles as sources of strength rather than evidence of failure, I have been able to build a life centered on growth, purpose, and hope. Epictetus teaches that freedom comes from mastering one's own mind, and my experiences have shown me how powerful that lesson can be. Through recovery, motherhood, and education, I have learned that while I cannot change my past, I can choose how it shapes my future.
A Grandmother's Love Single Mom Scholarship
One of the greatest hardships I face as a single mother pursuing higher education is balancing the responsibilities of parenting, work, and school without having a consistent support system. As the sole provider and caregiver for my 18-month-old son, every responsibility falls on me. While I am grateful for the opportunity to pursue my education, doing so while raising a young child presents challenges that many traditional students do not experience.
One of the biggest obstacles is financial stress. As a single parent, I am responsible for paying rent, utilities, groceries, transportation costs, and all of my son's needs. In order to support us financially while attending school, I currently work part-time. However, finding employment that accommodates both my academic schedule and parenting responsibilities has been extremely difficult. Childcare is expensive, and many childcare centers have long waiting lists, limiting my ability to work traditional hours. Because of these challenges, I have had to make difficult decisions regarding employment while continuing to focus on my long-term goal of earning a degree.
Time management is another significant hardship. There are often not enough hours in the day to accomplish everything that needs to be done. My days are spent caring for my son, completing school assignments, managing household responsibilities, and working. Most of my studying takes place after my son goes to bed, which frequently means sacrificing sleep in order to meet deadlines and maintain my academic performance. There have been many nights when I stayed awake late completing assignments and then woke up early to care for my son. The physical and emotional exhaustion can be overwhelming at times.
Another challenge is the lack of flexibility when unexpected situations arise. Young children become sick, need additional attention, and have needs that cannot be postponed. As a single mother, there is often no one else available to step in when emergencies happen. If my son is sick or needs me, my responsibilities as a parent must come first, regardless of upcoming assignments, exams, or work obligations. Learning how to adapt and remain focused despite unexpected challenges has been one of the most difficult aspects of balancing school and motherhood.
There are also emotional hardships that come with pursuing higher education as a single parent. There are moments when I question whether I am doing enough or whether I can continue managing so many responsibilities at once. The pressure to succeed academically while providing for my family can feel overwhelming. However, those moments are also what motivate me to keep moving forward. I know that earning my degree will create opportunities that will improve both my life and my son's future.
Despite these challenges, I have remained committed to my education and have maintained a 4.0 GPA. That achievement represents countless sacrifices, late nights, and moments of perseverance. My son is my greatest motivation and the reason I continue pushing forward when things become difficult. I want to provide him with stability, security, and opportunities that I did not always have. Every challenge I overcome reminds me why I started this journey.
While the hardships of being a single mother in college are significant, they have also taught me resilience, discipline, and determination. These experiences have strengthened my belief that education is the key to creating a better future. Although the road is not easy, I remain committed to achieving my goals and showing my son that hard work, perseverance, and dedication can overcome even the most difficult obstacles.
WCEJ Thornton Foundation Low-Income Scholarship
Higher education is more than a personal goal for me—it is the foundation for the future I hope to build for myself, my son, and the people I hope to help throughout my life. As a single mother, attending college is not simply about earning a degree or increasing my earning potential. It is about creating opportunities, breaking cycles, and proving that no matter how difficult your past may be, you can still create a better future. Education represents hope, stability, and the chance to build a life that my son can be proud of.
My path to higher education has not been a traditional one. In 2020, I began struggling with fentanyl addiction, and for years I felt trapped in a cycle that seemed impossible to escape. I attempted to get sober multiple times but continued to face setbacks. During those years, I lost confidence in myself and often questioned whether I would ever be able to achieve my goals. Everything changed in 2024 when I found out I was pregnant with my son. Becoming a mother gave me a sense of purpose unlike anything I had ever experienced. For the first time, I had someone who depended on me completely, and I knew I wanted to become the person he deserved to have as a mother.
Since then, I have dedicated myself to rebuilding my life. I chose sobriety, returned to school, and committed myself to creating a future that is centered around growth, stability, and opportunity. Pursuing higher education has become one of the most important parts of that journey. Every course I complete and every challenge I overcome reminds me of how far I have come and how much is possible when you refuse to give up on yourself.
As a single mother, earning a college degree will provide opportunities that would otherwise be difficult to access. My goal is to establish a stable and meaningful career that allows me to support my family financially while also making a positive impact on others. I understand firsthand how difficult it can be to navigate financial hardship, limited resources, and uncertainty about the future. A college education will provide me with the knowledge, skills, and credentials needed to build long-term financial security for my son and me.
Currently, I balance school, work, and parenting responsibilities every day. There are many nights when I stay awake after my son has gone to sleep so I can complete assignments and keep up with coursework. There are times when I feel exhausted, overwhelmed, and uncertain about how I will manage everything. Despite those challenges, I have maintained a 4.0 GPA because I understand the importance of the opportunity I have been given. My academic success represents more than good grades—it represents resilience, determination, and a commitment to changing the direction of my life.
Beyond achieving personal success, I hope to use my education to create a positive impact in my community. My experiences with addiction and recovery have taught me how important support systems can be. I know what it feels like to struggle, feel hopeless, and wonder whether change is possible. Because of that, I hope to use my story to encourage others who may be facing similar challenges. I want people to know that their circumstances do not define them and that it is never too late to pursue a different path.
I am especially passionate about helping single parents and individuals in recovery. Both groups face unique obstacles that can make education and career advancement seem out of reach. As someone who understands those challenges personally, I hope to offer encouragement, mentorship, and support to others who are working to improve their lives. Whether through volunteer work, community involvement, or my future career, I want to help people recognize their potential and believe in their ability to succeed.
Higher education is helping me build a future that once felt impossible. It is providing me with the tools to create stability for my family, pursue a meaningful career, and make a positive impact on the lives of others. My goal is not only to earn a degree but to use that education as a platform to inspire, support, and empower people who may be facing challenges similar to those I have overcome. Through education, I am creating a better future for my son while working toward a future where I can help others do the same.

One of the biggest influences in my life has been growing up with two lesbian mothers. Having parents who are part of the LGBTQIA+ community shaped the way I see the world from a very young age. While every family is unique, growing up in a household led by two loving mothers taught me that family is defined by love, support, and commitment rather than by traditional expectations or stereotypes.
Throughout my life, I witnessed both the strength and resilience of my mothers as they navigated challenges that many families do not face. I saw how important acceptance and understanding can be and how harmful judgment and discrimination can be. These experiences taught me to look beyond labels and see people for who they truly are. Rather than judging someone based on their identity, background, or appearance, I learned to value kindness, character, and authenticity.
Having two mothers also gave me a unique perspective on acceptance. I grew up in an environment where I was encouraged to be myself without fear of judgment. My mothers taught me that everyone deserves to be loved, respected, and accepted for who they are. Because of their example, I learned the importance of embracing differences instead of fearing them. This lesson has stayed with me throughout my life and has influenced how I interact with others from all walks of life.
Their influence has also helped me develop confidence in being myself. Knowing that I was raised in a home where authenticity was celebrated allowed me to feel comfortable expressing who I am without worrying about fitting into someone else's expectations. That sense of acceptance has been invaluable, especially during difficult periods of my life when I struggled with challenges such as addiction, recovery, and rebuilding my future. Knowing that I had a family who loved me unconditionally gave me the strength to continue moving forward.
These experiences have shaped my plans for future activism by inspiring me to advocate for inclusion, equality, and understanding within my community. I believe that every person deserves the opportunity to live authentically and without fear of discrimination. In the future, I hope to use my voice and personal experiences to support efforts that promote acceptance and equal opportunities for LGBTQIA+ individuals and families.
I also want to be an advocate for young people who may feel different or misunderstood. Growing up with two mothers taught me that representation matters. When people see families, identities, and experiences that reflect their own, they feel less alone and more accepted. I hope to contribute to creating communities where all individuals feel valued and respected regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or family structure.
The lessons I learned from my mothers extend far beyond LGBTQIA+ advocacy. They taught me compassion, empathy, and the importance of standing up for others. Because of them, I have learned to approach people with an open mind and an open heart. Their example has shaped not only how I view the world but also the kind of person I strive to be. As I continue my education and work toward my future goals, I hope to carry those values with me and use them to make a positive impact in the lives of others.

Being a single parent has completely transformed my educational journey and the way I view my future. Before becoming a mother, I often struggled to find direction and purpose in my life. I faced many challenges, including addiction, and there were times when I did not believe I was capable of achieving long-term goals. Everything changed when I became pregnant with my son. He gave me a reason to believe in myself and a motivation greater than anything I had ever experienced. Becoming a single mother forced me to reevaluate my priorities and make decisions that would create a better future for both of us.
As a single parent, I am responsible for every aspect of my son's life. I provide for him financially, care for his daily needs, make important decisions, and ensure that he feels loved and supported. While these responsibilities can be overwhelming at times, they have also made me stronger, more resilient, and more determined than ever before. I understand that my son is watching everything I do, and I want to set an example of perseverance, hard work, and dedication.
Pursuing higher education as a single mother has not been easy. There are many days when I am balancing coursework, parenting responsibilities, household tasks, and work all at the same time. Childcare is expensive, and finding affordable options can be difficult. There have been nights when I stayed awake after my son went to bed so I could complete assignments and meet deadlines. There have also been moments when I felt exhausted and questioned whether I could continue. However, whenever I face those challenges, I remind myself why I started this journey. I am earning my degree because I want to create a stable and successful future for my son and provide opportunities that I never had growing up.
Being a single parent has also taught me the importance of perseverance. There is no option to quit when someone else depends on you. My son motivates me to keep moving forward even when life becomes difficult. Because of him, I have maintained a 4.0 GPA while pursuing my degree. Every class I complete brings me one step closer to achieving my goals and creating a life where I can provide financial stability and security for our family.
In the future, I plan to give back to my community by helping individuals who are facing struggles similar to those I have overcome. My experience with addiction and recovery has shown me how important support, encouragement, and second chances can be. I want to use my story to inspire others who may feel hopeless or believe that change is impossible. I hope to volunteer with organizations that support people in recovery, mentor young mothers, and advocate for individuals who are working to rebuild their lives.
I also want to support single parents who are pursuing education while raising children. I understand how difficult it can be to balance school, work, and parenting responsibilities, especially without a strong support system. By sharing my experiences and offering encouragement, I hope to help other parents believe that their goals are achievable despite the obstacles they face.
My educational journey is about more than earning a degree. It is about breaking cycles, creating opportunities, and building a better future for my son. I have learned that resilience, determination, and hard work can overcome even the most difficult circumstances. In the future, I hope to use those lessons to make a positive impact on my community and help others realize that their past does not have to define their future.
Working Student Scholarship
Balancing work, school, and single motherhood has been one of the most difficult yet rewarding experiences of my life. I am currently pursuing my college degree while raising my 18-month-old son as a single mother and working part-time to support us financially. Every day is a balancing act between completing coursework, earning enough money to pay bills, and being the best mother I can be. While the challenges can feel overwhelming at times, they have strengthened my determination to create a better future for both my son and myself.
Currently, I work as a dancer because it is one of the few jobs that allows me to earn enough money while working only once or twice a week. As a single mother, flexibility is essential. Childcare is extremely expensive, and many childcare centers have long waiting lists, making it difficult to maintain a traditional work schedule. Although dancing provides the flexibility I need right now, it is not a career I want to pursue long-term. The environment can be stressful and emotionally draining, and it often reminds me why I am working so hard to earn my degree. I want a stable career that allows me to provide for my son in a way that aligns with the future I envision for our family.
I have spent months searching for remote work opportunities that would better fit my responsibilities as both a parent and a student. Unfortunately, finding legitimate remote jobs that offer flexible hours and enough income to support a family has been extremely challenging. Despite the difficulties, I continue applying and searching because I know there are better opportunities ahead. My education is my pathway to those opportunities, and I am committed to staying focused on my goals.
One of the biggest challenges I have faced was returning to school while working and caring for my son full-time. There have been countless nights when I stayed awake after putting him to bed so I could complete assignments, study, and stay on top of my coursework. During the day, my attention is often divided between parenting responsibilities and finding time to focus on school. There have been moments when unexpected expenses, illnesses, or other life circumstances made it feel impossible to keep up with everything. As a single mother, there is often no one else available to step in when I need help, which means I must find a way to manage every responsibility on my own.
There were times when I felt exhausted and questioned whether I could continue balancing everything successfully. The pressure of maintaining good grades while earning enough money to support my family sometimes felt overwhelming. I am pursuing a degree because I want to create opportunities that neither my son nor I have had before. I want him to grow up seeing that perseverance, hard work, and education can change a person's life.
My son is my greatest source of motivation. He inspires me to keep moving forward even on the most difficult days. Maintaining a 4.0 GPA while balancing work and motherhood has required dedication, sacrifice, and resilience, but it has shown me what I am capable of accomplishing. I know that the challenges I face today are temporary, and I believe the education I am working so hard to earn will open doors to a brighter future. My goal is not only to improve my own life but also to show my son that no matter how difficult circumstances may be, determination and persistence can lead to success.

My struggle with substance abuse began in 2020 when I became addicted to fentanyl. What started as something I thought I could control quickly turned into an addiction that took over my life. Over the next several years, I lost confidence in myself and felt trapped in a cycle that seemed impossible to escape. I tried many times to get sober, but every attempt ended in relapse. Each time I failed, I felt more hopeless and convinced that I would never be able to overcome my addiction. Looking back, I can see how much pain addiction caused, not only for me but also for the people who cared about me.
Everything changed in 2024 when I found out I was pregnant. Learning that I was going to become a mother was the turning point I never expected. For years, I had struggled to stay sober for myself, but the moment I knew I was carrying my son, something inside me changed. For the first time, I had a reason bigger than myself to fight for. I knew I wanted to give my child the life he deserved, and I could not do that while continuing to use drugs.
What happened next felt like a miracle. After years of addiction and failed attempts at recovery, I stopped using fentanyl when I found out I was pregnant. I had prepared myself for severe withdrawal symptoms, but they never came the way I expected. It was as if becoming a mother gave me the strength I had been searching for all along. From that day forward, I remained committed to my recovery and focused on creating a healthier future.
Today, my son is 18 months old and continues to be my greatest motivation. Every day, he reminds me why I chose sobriety. Staying sober allows me to be present for his life, celebrate his milestones, and provide him with the love and stability he deserves. Recovery has also inspired me to pursue higher education. I am currently attending college, maintaining a 4.0 GPA, and working hard to build a better future for our family.
My journey has taught me that recovery is possible, even when it feels impossible. I am proud of how far I have come and grateful for the second chance I have been given. My son saved my life, and because of him, I have found purpose, determination, and hope for the future. Every day I remain sober is a reminder of how much is possible when you have something worth fighting for.
