The main reason I am interested in the creative arts is because I believe that art is a beautiful and meaningful instrument that an artist can use to empathize and connect with people on a deeper level than simply holding a conversation. One piece of artwork could convey any number of meanings to any number of people that are granted the privilege of witnessing its beauty. The message that an art piece will convey to a person solely depends on the viewers life experience and what they have endured up until that very moment. A painting of a jungle, for example, could symbolize darkness and the unknown to one viewer, while another might see peace and solace within the vast depths of the trees. Earlier this year, I stumbled upon a quote that has stuck with me and really helped me obtain a new perspective on what my goals are as an artist. To put it simply, that quote stated that “art is meant to comfort the disturbed, and disturb the comfortable.” At first, when I read the quote, I was dumbstruck. I had to take some time and think about what the meaning of this quote truly was, as well as what it meant to me and how I wanted it affect my life and artistic goals for the future. After some much needed time to sit alone with my thoughts, I was finally able to witness a clearer picture of how I wanted my artistic journey to continue. I wanted to be able to comfort the people who feel alone in this world. I wanted to be able to show people that even in their darkest moments there will continue to be more darkness, but there will also eventually be more light. I wanted to show the people, that are ignorant and unaware, of the ugly truth that harms our planet and our society. I wanted to comfort the people who are damned by this truth and show them that there are people who will speak up and out about these issues, whether it be directly or indirectly. I want to reach as many people as I can and I want to do all through art. That is the reason why the creative arts is one of my biggest passions, not simply for the beauty, but for the message that it holds and the comfort and solace that it brings to those who need it.
