When I think about the core pillar of being "hungry," it resonates with my journey in the nursing program at Florida Gulf Coast University. Hunger, to me, means a relentless drive to learn and improve, even when faced with challenges. A specific example of this hunger is my experience volunteering at a local community health clinic. During my junior year, I volunteered at a clinic that served underprivileged families. The clinic was often understaffed, and I wanted to make a meaningful contribution. I was eager to learn and help in any way possible. I started by assisting with administrative tasks, but my curiosity and determination to do more led me to shadow nurses and ask questions whenever I could. One day, the clinic was particularly busy, and a nurse asked if I could help with patient intake. Though I had never done it before, I was ready to step up. I quickly learned how to take basic vitals and record patient information. I exceeded expectations by not only managing these tasks efficiently but also by showing compassion and patience with each patient. My eagerness to learn and adapt made a difference in the clinic's workflow that day. To embody this hunger, I took several steps. First, I made sure to listen and absorb as much information as possible from the nurses and staff. I asked questions whenever I was unsure, showing that I was committed to doing the job correctly. I also spent extra time after my shifts researching and reviewing what I had learned to ensure I understood everything thoroughly. The impact of my actions was significant. By stepping up, I helped reduce the workload on the nurses, allowing them to focus more on patient care. Patients appreciated the attention and care I provided, which made their experience at the clinic more positive. The staff noticed my dedication and willingness to go above and beyond, which strengthened the team dynamic and encouraged other volunteers to take on more responsibilities. This experience taught me the importance of being proactive and eager in a healthcare setting. It showed me that hunger is not just about wanting to achieve personal goals but also about contributing to a team and making a positive impact on others. My time at the clinic reinforced my passion for nursing and my commitment to continue learning and growing in my field. In conclusion, embodying the pillar of being "hungry" has been crucial in my academic and clinical experiences. It has driven me to seek out opportunities to learn, adapt quickly, and contribute meaningfully to the communities I serve. As I continue my journey toward becoming a nurse, I remain committed to maintaining this hunger for knowledge and improvement, knowing that it will help me provide the best care possible to my future patients.

My academic and career goals are centered around becoming a registered nurse. I am committed to completing my degree in nursing and gaining the skills and knowledge necessary to provide excellent care to patients. Ultimately, I hope to specialize in pediatric nursing, as I have always had a strong desire to work with children and make a positive impact in their lives. In terms of community contribution, I have always tried to give back in whatever ways I can. During high school, I volunteered at local hospitals and participated in community health fairs. These experiences taught me the importance of community health and the role that healthcare professionals play in supporting public well-being. I also volunteered at a local food bank, which opened my eyes to the struggles many families face and reinforced my commitment to helping others. A time I failed was during my first semester in college when I struggled with balancing my coursework and personal life. I ended up not doing as well as I had hoped in one of my classes. This experience taught me the importance of time management and seeking help when needed. I learned to prioritize my commitments better and to reach out to professors and peers for support. This failure ultimately made me a stronger student and more resilient individual. My greatest strengths include my dedication, empathy, and adaptability. Jim Coots Scholarship
My name is Regan Folmar, and I am a pre-nursing student at Florida Gulf Coast University. As I approach my senior year, I am more committed than ever to pursuing a career in nursing, with a focus on holistic health and healing. Receiving the Expression in Medicine Scholarship would be an incredible support for me, both financially and personally. This scholarship would alleviate some of the financial burdens of my education, allowing me to focus more on my studies and less on how to pay for them. Nursing school is rigorous and demanding, and the financial support would mean I could dedicate more time to my coursework and clinical experiences. It would also help me purchase necessary textbooks and supplies, and perhaps even attend workshops or seminars related to holistic health practices. This would enhance my education and help me become a more well-rounded nurse. Holistic health and healing is an area I am deeply passionate about. I believe that treating the whole person—mind, body, and spirit—is essential for true healing. In my future career as a nurse, I hope to integrate holistic practices into patient care. This includes understanding and respecting the diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs of patients, and incorporating alternative therapies such as meditation, nutrition, and stress management techniques alongside conventional medicine. I want to make a positive impact by advocating for a more holistic approach in healthcare settings. Too often, healthcare can become focused solely on symptoms and diseases, rather than the person experiencing them. By promoting holistic health, I aim to improve patient outcomes and satisfaction. I want to empower patients to take an active role in their own health and healing, providing them with the knowledge and resources to make informed decisions. Additionally, I hope to contribute to the growing body of research on the benefits of holistic health practices. By participating in studies or projects that explore how these practices can complement traditional medicine, I can help to advance the field and encourage more healthcare providers to adopt a holistic approach. In my community, I plan to volunteer and engage with local organizations that promote holistic health. Whether it is through workshops, health fairs, or support groups, I want to help spread awareness and educate others about the importance of treating the whole person. In conclusion, the Expression in Medicine Scholarship would have a profound impact on my educational journey and future career. It would provide me with the resources and opportunities to deepen my understanding of holistic health and healing, and to ultimately make a meaningful difference in the lives of my patients. I am eager to contribute to a healthcare system that values and integrates holistic practices, and this scholarship would be a vital step in helping me achieve that goal.
    Expression in Medicine Scholarship
Free expression is a cornerstone of the medical field, crucial for the advancement of knowledge and the delivery of effective patient care. As a pre-nursing student at Florida Gulf Coast University, I am learning how open communication and the exchange of ideas are vital to the practice of medicine. Free expression allows healthcare professionals to share insights, challenge established norms, and innovate in ways that improve patient outcomes. In medicine, free expression means that doctors, nurses, researchers, and other healthcare workers can voice their observations and concerns without fear of retribution. This openness leads to better diagnostic accuracy and treatment plans, as professionals can consult with colleagues and consider a wide range of perspectives. It also encourages the reporting of medical errors and near misses, which are essential for learning and preventing future mistakes. Moreover, free expression is key to fostering a culture of respect and empathy in healthcare settings. It empowers patients to speak about their symptoms and concerns, ensuring they receive care that is tailored to their unique needs. When patients feel heard, they are more likely to trust their healthcare providers and engage in their treatment plans, leading to better health outcomes. Individuals within the medical field can protect and bolster free expression by advocating for environments where open dialogue is encouraged and valued. This involves supporting policies that protect whistleblowers, ensuring that healthcare workers can report issues without fear of losing their jobs or facing other negative consequences. Additionally, fostering a culture of continuous learning and curiosity can help maintain an atmosphere where questioning and discussing new ideas is the norm. As someone preparing to enter the nursing profession, I believe that promoting free expression also involves being an active listener and a compassionate communicator. By creating spaces where patients and colleagues feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and experiences, we can build trust and collaboration. This not only enhances the quality of care but also contributes to a more inclusive and innovative medical community. In conclusion, free expression is essential in medicine because it drives progress, improves patient care, and fosters a supportive environment for both healthcare workers and patients. By championing open communication and advocating for protective policies, individuals in the medical field can ensure that this ideal remains a fundamental part of healthcare. As I continue my studies and eventually enter the workforce, I am committed to upholding these values and contributing to a medical community that embraces the power of free expression.

I am currently attending school at Jupiter High School and plan to further my education at Florida Gulf Coast University. While at this university I plan on doing a pre-nursing track in hopes to become a nurse and eventually becoming a nurse anesthetist. While in this profession I hope to help those in need of medical assistance and alleviate the pressures of going to the doctor. Obstacles I may encounter during my college education experience are financial needs and being able to balance school, work and fun. Almost every college student experiences some form of financial burden, but I plan to hopefully receive scholarships to help cushion this burden as well as work. I've been working since my junior year of high school and know the impact of how making money could help in the long run as well as how to work hard. Having this experience made me appreciate the monetary value more as I started to become more independent. With this experience, I also hope to use this to overcome some of the financial burdens I may accumulate. While my coursework may increase once I begin college I understand this may mean sacrificing hanging out with friends or having to work less. During my first semester, I plan on finding what a sweet spot is by not working and eventually finding a job that works with my schedule. Although I could potentially struggle in my first year I do know that it will not last forever. My passion to help others in my future profession prevails doubts or struggles I may face. I have been in the medical academy since 6th grade and have since then been an emergency medical responder, CPR and Ekg technician certified while in this academy. This taught me how many different life-saving skills can impact a multitude of people. Throughout this academy, I was also set on becoming a cardiovascular surgeon because I thought being a surgeon made more of an impact on people. After more education, I understood just how much nursing can make a difference in the medical field. Nursing can be a double edge sword. It can be rewarding but strenuous. Although it may not be fit for everyone knowing that I will be hands-on in helping those in need overcomes any troubles I may need to overcome. Ever since I was little I always liked to help out around the house or even strangers.

From a young age I knew I wanted to go into the medical field. I enjoyed helping people and wanted to be more hands on, so I knew this field would allow me to do that. I never completely knew what I wanted to be until this year, but I had been in a medical academy since 6th grade so I was subjected to the multiple options that I could choose. Throughout being in a medical academy I was subject to all fields related to health. The degree I would like to pursue is Nursing. I had never envisioned myself as a nurse when I was younger, because I always wanted to be a surgeon, but I learned about the different type of nurses there are. I learned that I could become a Registered Nurse if I got a bachelors of science in nursing and from then on could continue in pursing something more niche. I eventually would like to become a nurse anesthetist. I could help a mass amount of people who are in need get properly prepped for a surgery that they would need and make their experience more enjoyable since procedures can be frightening for some. I never would have thought that I would become a nurse because of all the horror stories I have heard them endure, so I wanted to be a cardiovascular surgeon for a long time. I had always wanted to be even more hands on with a patient because I had felt that that meant I made more of a difference. I was naive. Everyone makes a difference in the medical world. Even if it’s evaluating a patient or helping a patient with insurance. You don’t necessarily need to be physical. This is when I learned being a nurse is not a belittling career. Nurses perform a vast amount of life saving skills and are constantly faces the same stress some surgeons may face. Although they may not get paid as many may think, they make some of the worlds biggest differences. Becoming a nurse anesthetist may be different when compared to what a registered nurse does, but they perform procedures that can save someone’s life. They are one of the first people a patient will see before they go until and one of the last they will see when they wake up. I hope to help make a difference in each of my patients lives.

My original art piece shows a cat being pet by a person. My inspiration behind this piece was to explore different forms a love for an art pro-folio. I had explore romantic love between people as well as platonic love between friends. I wanted to expand my idea to things some may not consider as being love. Love isn’t just a feeling or action between people. It can also be amongst animals. Animals are a man’s best friend so I wanted to depict this through a photograph. I have grown up around animals and felt as if any animal I had was almost better than a person. I’ve grown up with snakes, cats, dogs, bearded dragons and a hedgehog. Although it may sound like a zoo, I don’t regret being introduced to a variety of species. When I was little I wanted to be a veterinarian because I wanted to show my love towards animals by helping them. That was until I found out that I had to be subjected to animals in poor conditions or even death. I couldn’t deal with the factor that in some cases animals would have to be put to sleep. That’s when I decided to photograph animals to show off how much of an impact they can have in people. My cat in the photograph is one of the sweetest animals I have ever met and I wanted to photograph him in hopes that he would never be forgotten, as well as show how I show him my love. Humans may show love by hugging and other physical ways, but animals show affection in a different way. Whether is he by rubbing up against someone or trying to be in one’s presence constantly. Cats show their love by cuddling next to someone and dogs may show their love by licking. Human interactions with animals are also portrayed in a different form. This could be by buying toys, petting and playing with their pets. I personally show my affection through petting my pets and making sure they’re living in the best conditions. Although it may seem small taking care of another pet is showing them that they’re cared for and loved. Most people when they think of love, think of love between their partner or family, but may then think of their animal. That’s why I decided to take a photo of a different take on love and show one’s love between theme selves and their pets.

In this field I can meet people from all different backgrounds and ethnicities. This is includes both patients and coworkers. It’s crucial I work in a diverse workplace because not being exposed towards certain cultures and beliefs won’t help me provide proper care towards certain people. Working alongside people of different religions could teach me how to accommodate and respect others religions that differs from mine. I come from a predominantly white and Hispanic school, so I haven’t been as exposed to people of color, Asians and etc, which are some people I’d eventually work with. If my work place is more diverse I could meet other individuals who can educate myself about their backgrounds. I can learn the do’s and don’ts about how to properly assist those in need and also work with them. I can also learn more about the hardships people of other races go through because minorities do have a greater difficulty in life than someone of my skin tone. Pursuing a degree in nursing will be challenging, but I know that I will help multiple people. I will meet others of different races and religion, so more diversity in the workplace would be beneficial. I would learn how to properly respect other individuals who are different than I and be guided on how to properly assist those in need.

I could help tons of people who are in need get prepped for the surgery they would need and make their experience more enjoyable since procedures can be frightening for some. I never thought I would become a nurse because of all the horror stories I have heard them endure, so I wanted to be a cardiovascular surgeon for a long time.

What are STEM based careers? STEM includes computer workers, engineers, mathematicians and statisticians, etc. STEM-related includes architects and health care workers. I want to go into a career in STEM. Everything within this degree is backed by science. You need to know the anatomy of the body, which is science. You need to know basic Biology, which is science. Science engulfs the medical field and is used every day. Medicines that saves lives uses chemistry to attack infections or diseases. If science wasn’t used in society the world would be much sicker and less functional. People in the medical field would be less competent to helping those in need and those who have science based careers would also not have a job.

Online gaming can connect people of all backgrounds and cultures. When people engage in any kind of activity, they have to take on a different form then their familiarized form. Online gaming forums do not require face-to-face interaction and for some this is game changing. Some people can be extremely introverted, but video games help them get out of their shell and open up. Most would classify real-life interaction to be physically in person talking to another, but the virtual world discards these social norms. Individuals can create a different character of themselves and build new communities through this persona by connecting to people people who do not necessarily have to meet in person. Today people start playing video games as young as eight years old. These kids have grown up in the online world and evolved with it. It allows these kids or adults to communicate to each other via chat and from some interact virtually through games. These communities have grown to become more accessible accepting everyone despite their looks and interests that may be weird towards others. Online gaming forums possess more than just the power to connect us emotionally. Today people of all age work together in groups online and some can eventually work together in person. Brought together by these online servers, these strangers learn how to work together to achieve a common goal. This can create friendships unlike what’s normally seen to most. This has created an explosion in different type of sports called esports. Creating new social elements and outlets for participants in the video game environment. People who participate in esports do not necessarily fit the standard of people who play outdoor sports, such as soccer and football, but to the online world these sports are just as competitive. Players in teams of all genders, ages, nationalities and abilities come together to compete for a common goal, to win. Players help their teammates using their unique skills. This online forum has helped others have more empathy and compassion for others, while improving communication skills. Esports builds a community of not only players but fans who gather together to watch these tournaments or those who attend in person. This is just one major example of how the online gaming forum has shaped new forms of social norms in real-life interactions. People do not have to come face-to-face to create friendships and communicate with others, discarding the normal civil discourse and actions seen by others.

Dogs are a man’s best friend, but also a women’s. Growing up I always was surrounded by cats and my first dog, a beagle named Izzy. She was a stout and older dog, but her bark was constantly loud. She had big brown eyes, brown and white coloring on her face and black patches on her body. She was my first dog and helped me grow up. She was something that would comfort me throughout my childhood. If I cried she would come see me and if I was happy she would also be jumping with joy. Like most dogs she was obsessed with small animals and once dragged me to catch a squirrel. She was not very successful. However, my dog not only helped me when I was little but also engraved a new pathway for myself. During my fourth grade year she became sick. My job was to take her outside and feed her. Each time we would go outside she would need a leash and each time she ate she ate out of bowl. Since she got sick she no longer had the energy to run away after squirrels and had to be feed with liquids via a tube. After seeing her in pain we were told that nothing we could do would help her. The day she died she came up to my brother and I before we left to school and gave us her last kiss. Ever since I felt that feeling of helplessness I had a goal to help people. She had grew my love for animals, but I knew I could not help others by being a veterinarian. Putting animals to sleep and seeing animals in pain is not something I could do for a living. I couldn’t even watch a dogs purpose without crying when a dog would die. That’s when I started focusing on a different medical field involving people. I decided I would help people by becoming a nurse Anesthetist. A certified registered nurse anesthetist is an advanced practice nurse who administers anesthesia for surgery and other medical procedures. I would help those in pain or in need to get the medical care they would need and hopefully make them feel more hopeful. People can say an animal doesn’t make an impact, but those people haven’t had a dog like Izzy. The way I think would not be the same if I hadn’t met her. She made me more compassionate and sympathetic towards other. I may not have another dog like her but I will always remember her.

Jupiter Florida, where the rich thrive and the poor survive. Living here can feel like a dream. Every week I ask my friends if they want to go to the beach. Most reply saying yes and we will go park by beach volleyball courts, incase we feel competitive, which was a constant feeling. We got into the habit of always playing a game, hoping we got equal groups of people to place on each side. One side would start off with the ball, but only if they won rock, papers and scissors. The sand on the courts steaming hot and sweat starts to accumulate the second we start to move. One of our friends would trash talk, the others would ignore him and we’d all end the game laughing. After these games we become coated with sand and rinse off. We go across the street and the direct our focus on the ocean. We hope that there’s no seaweed and that the sand on the beach won’t give us blisters. This is our perfect day with each other, but now the numbers of people coming out are dwindling. Parents have started to tell us that we have to work and become ready for the life of an adult. Although this is true, in reality, where we live is too expensive for most. Our parents are too busy paying for the house, cars and the other younger siblings. Some of us don’t have a lot of money for college, but that is our goal. Almost everyone wants to go to college. Most jobs require certain degrees and having at least an AA can get people to great distances. That’s why from a young age my goal was to go to a university, specifically University of Florida. I want to become a nurse anesthetist, but the become that I need a higher education. I would need my associates degree and then my bachelors of nursing, but that would only make me a registered nurse. I would then have to do residency in an ICU and get hands on experience. Lastly, I’d further my education, after residency, to get my doctorate, becoming a nurse anesthetist. Becoming a nurse anesthetist is a job that appeals to me and what I could see myself do for years. During my time as a nurse I could then successfully help other, but to become one a higher education is not something that’s optional.
