I am a fifth generation young man from a cattle ranch in central Texas and am the only son to my father, who still "works the ranch" with my grandfather. I always believed and was encouraged that my destiny would be to take over the ranch when the time came; therefore, I was motivated in college to excel in track and field, rather than academics. That, unfortunately, is reflected in my underwhelming grade point average, even though I was in the top 10% of my class in high school. Upon entering the oil and gas industry while completing a Masters degree at the University of Houston in Petroleum Geology, I had the goal of gaining practical corporate experience and, later, use this experience to help develop the oil reserves beneath my ancestral grounds. I found myself being unfulfilled in my geologist position sought help from a psychiatrist to understand myself better and become more clear with my career path. I found this experience to be quite valuable, and, to my surprise, I became conscious of the fact that I have always loved and performed well in the biological sciences, and learned that I have certain characteristics that complement the work and profession of a physician. Additionally, I have had several close role models who are physicians who gave me excellent advice about this career, which solidified my choice to apply to medical school. I am currently taking those premed requirements that I did not have in college to gain an in-depth knowledge of those subjects to which I did not apply myself sufficiently while in college.
