To Whom it May Concern, I am deeply passionate about pursuing a career in teaching because I believe in the transformative power of education. I am currently contracted part-time through a local school to teach elementary general music education. Teaching allows me to share my love for music and inspire the next generation to find their own passions. I would love to be able to incorporate that into my curriculum as a classroom teacher after I earn my degree. My journey into teaching was profoundly influenced by my father, a drum teacher himself, who was a constant source of support and encouragement. His dedication to our family and to the broader community instilled in me the values of perseverance, selflessness, and the importance of giving back. Another person who has significantly influenced my decision to become a teacher is Miss Linari. She has been teaching for 40 years and, although retired, continues to tutor children who are struggling the most. She came into my life about a year ago when she started working with my son, who faces various learning challenges. Miss Linari’s dedication and patience have not only helped my son make remarkable progress but also inspired me to pursue a teaching credential so that I can impact the lives of students as she has. Recently, I learned that my aunt was also taught by Miss Linari when she was in the third grade. My aunt was a student everyone was ready to give up on, but not Miss Linari. She spent long hours and years helping my aunt understand and eventually succeed. My aunt credits her later success to Miss Linari’s unwavering support. Even after all these years, my aunt becomes emotional when talking about Miss Linari because of the profound impact she had on her life. Miss Linari’s influence, combined with my father’s legacy, has profoundly shaped my teaching philosophy. Both remarkable individuals have demonstrated the transformative power of dedication, compassion, and unwavering support in education. Inspired by their examples, I strive to create a positive and engaging learning environment where every student feels valued, understood, and encouraged to reach their full potential. In my classroom, I aim to introduce a sense of belonging, instilling confidence in each student. I believe that when students feel "seen", they are more likely to engage actively in their learning journey. My goal is to be a source of stability and also of inspiration, much like Miss Linari and my father were for me and countless others. Through pursuing a career in teaching, I hope to make a meaningful impact on my students’ lives. I want to be the kind of teacher who not only imparts knowledge but also instills a love for learning and a belief in their own abilities. Just as Miss Linari’s dedication helped my son overcome his learning challenges and my aunt achieve success against the odds, I aspire to guide my students through their educational journeys. My mission is to honor the legacies of Miss Linari and my father by becoming a teacher who makes a lasting difference. I am committed to creating a truly nurturing environment where every child has the opportunity to succeed. Thank you for your consideration, Rebecca Hamrick

There is a song by the artist Gnarls Barkley titled "Crazy" that resonates with me. "I remember, I remember when I lost my mind. There was something so pleasant about that place. Even your emotions have an echo in so much space."(Gnarls Barkley, Crazy) Four years ago, I was trapped in an extremely abusive marriage. We had a small child together who I struggled to shelter from the abuse. My mind eventually shut down completely, and I found myself in a behavioral health facility, where I spent a month recovering from trauma induced psychosis. It was the nurses in this facility who finally helped me to make a plan to escape the violence. Four years later, I still have pretty severe PTSD from my life back then, but everyday gets better as I keep picking myself up and moving forward. I have found myself in a life that I am so grateful for. My son and I are struggling financially, but we are safe, happy and thriving. This experience has deepened my empathy for those around me. When someone is rude or curt, I don’t take it personally. Instead, I feel compassion for them, understanding that everyone has their own struggles that may not be visible. In my personal relationships, I deeply appreciate every act of kindness directed towards me. This experience has strengthened my resolve to reclaim my self-worth by giving back to my community. I have discovered a passion for teaching children and currently work part-time at a local elementary school, where I teach general music education. Additionally, I offer private music lessons. My goal is to integrate music and art into my future classroom once I earn my degree and become a full-time teacher. Music and art play an important role in the development and well-being of children. These creative outlets are not just extracurricular activities; they are essential components of a well-rounded education and have profound impacts on mental health. They provide children with a safe space to express their emotions. Whether it’s through playing a piece on the piano or painting a picture, these activities allow kids to convey feelings they might not be able to articulate with words. This emotional release can be incredibly therapeutic and helps in managing stress and anxiety. Participating in group music or art projects teaches children important social skills such as teamwork, communication, and empathy. Working together towards a common goal fosters a sense of community and belonging, which is vital for their social development. Music and art have a significant positive impact on mental health. They provide an outlet for self-expression and for creativity, which can boost self-esteem and confidence. Engaging in these activities can also reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety, promoting overall emotional well-being. Incorporating music and art into the school curriculum is not just beneficial but essential for nurturing well-rounded, emotionally healthy, and academically successful children. Thank you for your time and consideration. Rebecca Hamrick
    “The Office” Obsessed! Fan Scholarship
I resonate most with Pam Beesly from “The Office.” Like Pam, I have a deep passion for creativity and a genuine care for those around me. Pam’s journey from doodling at her desk to pursuing her dreams of becoming an artist mirrors my own path with music. I started playing the piano at a young age and have always been surrounded by music, much like Pam’s quiet yet persistent love for art. Pam’s story of personal growth and overcoming challenges really speaks to me. She starts off as a receptionist, often underestimated, but gradually finds her voice and confidence. This reminds me of my own journey, navigating through personal losses and challenges to find my passion for teaching and music. Her resilience and determination are qualities I strive to embody in my own life. “The Office” has a unique way of blending humor with the everyday realities of workplace dynamics. Pam’s sense of humor is both subtle and kind-hearted, which resonates with my approach to creating a positive and engaging learning environment. The show’s humor highlights the importance of finding joy and laughter in the mundane, a perspective I find valuable in my profession as a teacher. In terms of workplace dynamics, “The Office” showcases a diverse range of personalities and how they interact. This reflects my experiences working with different students and colleagues, understanding their unique needs, and encouraging a supportive community. The show emphasizes empathy, patience, and resilience; qualities that are so important in both teaching and navigating workplace relationships. Pam Beesly’s character and the dynamics in “The Office” have taught me the importance of creativity, perseverance, and finding humor in everyday situations. These lessons are essential in my journey as a music educator, and I will strive to bring these qualities into my classroom every day when I become a cedentialed teacher.

My career of choice is to become a classroom teacher who integrates music into the daily curriculum. This path combines my lifelong passion for music with my dedication to education, allowing me to create a dynamic and engaging learning environment for my students. I believe that music is a powerful tool for personal growth, emotional expression, and cognitive development. By incorporating music into the classroom, I aim to enrich the educational experience and help students navigate the complexities and challenges of learning. My passion for teaching and music stems from my early childhood experiences and my family’s rich musical heritage. I started playing the piano at the age of four and was performing in musical theater by age nine. Throughout my school years, I learned to play the trumpet and participated in school bands, community symphonies, orchestras, and jazz bands. Growing up in a family of musicians, I was constantly surrounded by the sounds of music. My grandfather on my father’s side was a professional trumpet player, my grandmother on my mother’s side was an internationally recognized vocalist, and my father was a professional drummer. This environment instilled in me a deep appreciation for the transformative power of music. One of the most significant influences on my decision to pursue a career in teaching was my father. His dedication to our family and community taught me the values of perseverance, selflessness, and the importance of giving back. Despite the challenges we faced, my father always made sure we had what we needed and supported our passions. His sudden passing when I was young was a devastating blow, but it also reinforced my desire to make a positive impact on others’ lives, just as he did. Another profound influence has been Miss Linari, a dedicated teacher who has been a guiding light for my son, who faces various learning challenges. Her patience and support have not only helped my son make remarkable progress but also inspired me to pursue a teaching credential. Miss Linari’s dedication to her students, even in retirement, and her ability to make a lasting impact on their lives have shown me the true power of a committed educator. Pursuing my personal and educational goals has required significant sacrifices. Balancing my responsibilities as a parent, teacher, and student has often meant long hours and limited personal time. Financial constraints have also been a challenge, as I have often provided music lessons at no charge to low-income families, believing firmly that music and art should be accessible to everyone. Despite these challenges, my commitment to my goals has never wavered. I am driven by the desire to create a positive and inclusive learning environment where every child feels valued and supported. Receiving a scholarship would provide the financial support needed to pursue my degree in education without the burden of financial stress. This assistance would allow me to focus entirely on my studies and professional development, ensuring that I can acquire the best possible training and resources to become an effective and inspiring teacher. It would enable me to continue my work in the community, expanding my outreach efforts and providing more opportunities for children to experience the joy and benefits of music education. The sacrifices I have made along the way have only strengthened my resolve to make a lasting, positive impact on the lives of my students and the broader community. With the support of a scholarship, I am confident that I can achieve my goals and inspire the next generation to discover their own passions and unlock their creative potential. Thank you for your consideration, Rebecca

There is a cherished memory my dad often shared with pride: When I was three, he asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, and I replied that I wanted to be a piano. Music was a shared love that bonded us deeply. At the age of four, my dad and I enrolled in a “Boogie-Woogie” Blues Piano course at the local college. It wasn’t a class for toddlers, but my dad convinced them I wouldn’t be a bother, and he was right. My parents separated when I was a baby, and my dad raised us with full custody. My mom wasn’t around much during our childhood. Times were tough, but we managed. My dad was our rock. He worked full-time, volunteered in the community, and always made sure we had food to eat and clothes to wear. He was selfless and loved us deeply. When my dad suddenly passed away from a heart attack at 56, it was devastating. That year was also marked by the loss of my older brother, three grandparents, and my first love—all tragic accidents that threw my life off balance for several years. Despite these overwhelming losses, my dad’s unwavering dedication and love instilled in me a resilience that has carried me through the darkest times. His example taught me the importance of perseverance, community, and selflessness. These values have become the foundation of my approach to teaching and life. In recent years, I stumbled upon a music teaching position, where I rediscovered my passion for music and found a new love for teaching. I realized I have patience, resilience, and understanding. I have what it takes to never give up on any child. Today, I teach private music lessons and am contracted part-time to teach elementary general music education at a local school. With a degree in education, I will be able to reach many more children, not just through a more developed music and art program, but by becoming a classroom music teacher. I am passionate about helping children navigate the complexities and challenges of learning. The loss of my father profoundly influenced my decision to pursue a career as a teacher. His dedication to our family and to the community showed me the impact one person can have on the lives of others. Teaching allows me to honor his legacy by giving back to my community and supporting children in their educational journeys. My experiences have taught me patience, resilience, and the importance of never giving up on any child. I strive to be a source of stability and encouragement for my students, just as my dad was for me.
