Innovators of Color in STEM Scholarship
My name is Rebecca Boone, I have always been captivated by the intricate workings of the human body and the scientific principles that govern our world. This fascination has driven my passion for an education in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), particularly as I aspire to major in pre-dental studies.
From a young age, I was curious about how things worked, whether it was the mechanics of a simple machine or the complex processes within the human body. This curiosity naturally led me to excel in subjects like biology, chemistry, and physics. I found joy in understanding the scientific concepts that explain everyday phenomena and the thrill of solving complex problems through logical reasoning and experimentation.
My interest in dentistry was sparked during a visit to my dentist, where I was intrigued by the precision and care involved in dental procedures. I realized that dentistry is not just about teeth; it's about improving people’s health and confidence. This realization solidified my desire to pursue a career where I could combine my love for science with my passion for helping others.
STEM education provides the foundation needed for a successful career in dentistry. Courses in biology and chemistry are crucial for understanding the human body and the materials used in dental treatments. Physics helps in grasping the mechanics of dental instruments and procedures, while technology plays a significant role in modern dental practices. By majoring in pre-dental studies, I will gain the necessary knowledge and skills to excel in dental school and beyond.
Moreover, STEM education fosters critical thinking and problem-solving skills, which are essential in dentistry. Dentists must diagnose and treat a variety of dental issues, often requiring innovative solutions and a deep understanding of scientific principles. My STEM background will equip me with the analytical skills needed to tackle these challenges effectively.
As a black woman in STEM, I am motivated to break stereotypes and inspire other young women to pursue their passions in science and technology. The underrepresentation of women in STEM fields is a challenge that I am determined to overcome. By excelling in my studies and career, I hope to serve as a role model and advocate for gender diversity in STEM, encouraging more girls to follow their dreams and contribute to these vital fields.
As a person of color, I believe I can make a significant impact in the STEM field and dentistry by bringing diverse perspectives and experiences. Representation matters, and I hope to inspire other young people of color to pursue careers in STEM, showing them that they too can succeed and make a difference in these fields.

My name is Rebecca Boone, as you may or may not know, I was found on a doorstep in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and taken to an orphanage named Three Angels Children's Relief when I was only 9 months old. After a catastrophic earthquake destroyed my orphanage and devastated my country, I was adopted by Kevin and Cara Boone and came to America at the age of three. Being from Haiti and having white parents, you’d expect people to give you odd looks and make assumptions. Many had doubts, but that only fueled my determination. My parents weren’t the richest, but I’m so incredibly blessed to have joined a family with five kids. It wasn’t easy for them, but they welcomed me with open arms.
I am thrilled to announce that I will be attending Eckerd College in Saint Petersburg, where I will have the incredible opportunity to play for their beach volleyball team.
Beach volleyball is more than just a sport to me; it’s a way of life. Over the years, I have dedicated countless hours to training and improving my skills, always striving to be the best player I can be. This dedication has paid off, and I am honored to join the Eckerd College beach volleyball team. I am excited to contribute to the team and to continue growing as an athlete.
While my dedication to beach volleyball is strong, my academic and professional aspirations are equally important to me. I have always been fascinated by the field of dentistry. The ability to help people maintain their oral health and improve their smiles is something that I find incredibly rewarding. My goal is to pursue a career in dentistry, with the ultimate aim of opening my own general dentistry practice across America. This ambition drives me to excel both on and off the court, as I work towards making a meaningful impact in the field of dental health.

The underrepresentation of women in STEM fields is a challenge that I am determined to overcome. As I prepare to embark on this new chapter of my life, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and anticipation. I am grateful for the support of my family, friends, and coaches who have helped me reach this point. Their encouragement and belief in me have been instrumental in my journey. I am ready to embrace the challenges, to work hard, and to make the most of every moment.

Education can open many doors to opportunities that could have remained closed. Through education, I have learned not just academic subjects but also critical thinking, problem-solving, and the ability to understand and appreciate diverse perspectives. As a three-year-old adapting to an unfamiliar environment after coming from Haiti, adjusting to change was difficult because of the language barrier. But education serves a crucial role in who I've become today. Nelson Mandela once said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” I’ve had so many opportunities that others don’t have, like being able to play a sport and succeed in it. For example, volleyball has taken me all the way to the junior Olympics and not only allowed me to develop physical skills but also taught me about teamwork, resilience, and dedication.

As I reflect on my journey, I am also mindful of my roots. Being left on a doorstep was misfortunate but I was fortunate to be cared for by my parents. While my life in the United States has been filled with love and support it is important to honor where I came from, to embrace the richness of my heritage, and to share it with others. This connection has inspired me to advocate for those who may not have a voice, reminding me that there are many children around the world who yearn for the same opportunities that I've had. And I am fortunate to have those opportunities through my hard-working parents.
I recognize that my path has been shaped by the sacrifices of my adoptive parents and the love they poured into my upbringing. They taught me the values of kindness, hard work, and the importance of giving back. As I approach the next chapter of my life, I am okay with having this closure of my adoption and knowing that I am loved.
