John Young 'Pursue Your Passion' Scholarship
From the moment I first stepped onto a construction site at 18, I knew I had found my passion. The complexity, the collaboration, and the tangible results of construction ignited a fire in me to make an impact in this industry. I’ve chosen to pursue construction management because it combines problem-solving, leadership, and innovation—skills that I want to harness to not only complete projects but to transform how we build, lead, and leave our mark on the world. As a project engineer, I’ve experienced firsthand how construction can directly impact communities. Currently, I’m managing a 266-unit apartment building in Aventura, a project that was abandoned by a failing general contractor. When my team took over, there was no permanent power or water connected to the building. Just a few months later, we faced catastrophic historic flooding. These obstacles were tough, but I see them as opportunities to rise above adversity and deliver on my commitment to building something meaningful. Now, just two weeks away from substantial completion, I am reminded of why I chose this field: to make a difference where it counts the most—by creating spaces where people live, work, and thrive. My desire to create an impact goes beyond just completing projects. I want to help modernize the construction industry, which often clings to outdated methods. I am passionate about incorporating technology to make the building process more efficient. With the increasing importance of efficiency, I see a need for leaders who can merge innovation with practicality. Personal perseverance has played a significant role in shaping who I am and why I’m pursuing this field. Dropping out of high school as a sophomore could have defined my future, but instead, I earned my GED and enrolled in community college, where I completed an associate’s degree in business. This unconventional path taught me resilience and discipline, qualities that have fueled my success both in school and in the workforce. Now, as a full-time student at LSU’s College of Engineering with a 4.0 GPA, I’m balancing my education with leading multi-million-dollar construction projects. This balance requires grit and determination, but it also reflects my unwavering passion for construction and my belief that the harder the road, the greater the reward. As a young woman in a male-dominated industry, I’ve had to fight for my place at the table, but that fight has only sharpened my ambition. I want to pave the way for more women to enter and lead in construction, proving that with hard work and resilience, no challenge is insurmountable. Through innovation, leadership, and perseverance, I aim to shape the future of construction and leave a lasting impact on both the industry and the communities we build for. This scholarship would help me achieve my vision and allow me to continue my journey of making a meaningful difference in the field I love.
    Harvest Achievement Scholarship
My journey is rooted in accountability and determination. I dropped out of high school as a sophomore—not because I couldn’t keep up, but because I felt unchallenged. I earned my GED and immediately enrolled in community college, where I earned my AA in Business while working full-time. It wasn’t long before I found my true passion in construction. Today, I’m a project engineer in the fast-paced construction industry of South Florida. The cost of living in the tri-county area is steep, but I’ve never let that slow me down. I started in this industry at 18, quickly discovering its complexity and rewards. My passion for solving problems and creating something from the ground up fueled my ambition. Now, I’m in my fourth year of a Construction Management degree at LSU’s College of Engineering, balancing a full-time career with a full-time course load since 2019. What sets me apart is my ability to hold myself accountable in the face of overwhelming challenges. This year, I was handed one of the toughest assignments of my career: managing a 266-unit ground-up build in Aventura, Florida. My team took over the project in January 2024 from a failing general contractor. The site had no permanent power or water, and the timeline was in shambles. Instead of blaming the situation, I took responsibility for getting the project back on track. In June, we faced another setback—historic flooding. But we adapted, overcame the damage, and are now two weeks from substantial completion. This experience reinforced that accountability is the key to success, even in adversity. This commitment to accountability extends to my education. Balancing a demanding career and school hasn’t been easy, but I’ve maintained a 4.0 GPA in my construction courses. Earning Dean’s List honors every semester is the result of setting goals and holding myself accountable, even when the workload seems overwhelming. I know that the work I’m doing today is laying the foundation for my future success. Being a woman in construction comes with its own set of challenges. Every day, I’m conscious that I must work harder to prove myself, not only because of my age but also my gender. I’m often the youngest person in the room and one of the only women, which means earning respect takes extra effort. I hold myself accountable for responding to this pressure by delivering flawless work, leading effectively, and making sound decisions. I take full ownership of how I present myself in this industry, knowing that accountability is what sets me apart. For me, success is about consistently showing up, delivering results, and exceeding expectations. Accountability is the personal standard I apply to every aspect of my life. Whether managing a multimillion-dollar construction project or excelling academically, it drives me forward. I’ve had to overcome the challenges of working in a male-dominated field by proving I belong. This commitment has shaped who I am and will continue to fuel my growth in the industry. With this foundation of accountability, I believe I am the ideal candidate for this scholarship, committed to making an impact and advancing in my career while maintaining the highest standards for myself.
    Rossi and Ferguson Memorial Scholarship
"What could go wrong?" It’s a question I ask myself every single day as I navigate the construction site, where I’m overseeing the final stages of a 277-unit apartment complex. For some, this question might trigger anxiety, but for me, it’s a challenge—a dare, even. Because if there’s one thing I’ve learned on my journey, it’s that embracing what could go wrong is the first step toward ensuring everything goes right. When I was 17, dropping out of high school might have seemed like the first thing that could go wrong. But for me, it was the first thing that went right. I left the traditional path behind, got my GED, and enrolled in community college. I wasn’t running away from education; I was running toward a different kind of learning. One where I could shape my future with my own hands—though not in the way most people might expect from someone entering the construction industry. My father and grandfather were both contractors, men who believed in the power of building something from nothing. They spent their lives turning blueprints into reality, their hands calloused and their minds sharp. But as much as I admired their work, I knew my path would differ. I wasn’t drawn to the trades like they were. Instead, I was captivated by the idea of leading projects, managing the chaos, and turning it into something beautiful. So, at 18, I jumped into the deep end. With a GED and a few college credits, I began my career in construction management. I didn’t spend years in the trenches; instead, I rapidly climbed the ranks, driven by a relentless need to prove myself. As a young woman in a male-dominated industry, I had to prove myself every step of the way. But let’s circle back to that question: What could go wrong? On any given day at the construction site, the list is endless. A delivery could be delayed, a contractor could quit, the weather could turn, and deadlines could be missed. Managing a project of this scale is like conducting an orchestra where every instrument has a mind of its own. It’s a constant dance with chaos, and the stakes are high. Yet, it’s not just about what could go wrong on the site. It’s about the life I’m building alongside these structures. While I’m managing this project full-time, I’m also pursuing a bachelor’s degree in construction management—a degree I’m paying for out of my pocket, in a city where the cost of living is sky-high. My days are a delicate balance of site meetings, classes, and study sessions that stretch into the night. And just to add a bit more complexity, I’m also working toward earning my General Contractor’s license. So, what could go wrong? Well, there’s the constant threat of burnout. Juggling a full-time job, full-time studies, and the pursuit of a professional license is like walking a tightrope over a pit of alligators. One misstep, one moment of fatigue, and everything could come crashing down. But here’s the thing: I thrive on that edge. It’s where I feel most alive, most connected to the passion that drives me forward. In South Florida, where the sun is as relentless as the deadlines, I’ve learned that success isn’t about avoiding what could go wrong; it’s about embracing it, preparing for it, and then conquering it. I’ve faced skepticism and doubt from every corner—colleagues who question whether I can handle the pressure, professors who wonder if I’m stretching myself too thin, and even my inner voice that sometimes whispers, “Is this too much?” But each of those doubts has fueled my fire. They’ve pushed me to be better, to work harder, to stay up just a little later studying for that next exam or reviewing the plans for tomorrow’s meeting. I’ve learned that the real question isn’t what could go wrong, but what could go right? What amazing things could happen if I keep pushing forward if I don’t let the fear of failure hold me back? As the project nears completion, I walk through the nearly finished apartments and imagine the lives that will soon fill these spaces. This building isn’t just concrete and steel; it’s the culmination of years of dreams, hard work, and the willingness to face down everything that could go wrong. It’s a testament to the idea that when you embrace the challenges you welcome the possibility of failure, you create something far greater than success. You build resilience, grit, and a deep, unshakeable belief in your own abilities. So, what could go wrong? Plenty. And that’s the beauty of it. Because every potential setback is also an opportunity—a chance to learn, to adapt, and to grow. Every obstacle I’ve faced, from the day I decided to leave high school to the moment I took the reins of this project, has taught me that what could go wrong is just the starting point. It’s the question that leads to the answer: What can I make go right? As I stand here, on the brink of completing both this project and my degree, I’m not afraid of what could go wrong. I’m excited by it. Because I know that whatever challenges come my way, I have the passion, the creativity, and the determination to turn them into something incredible. That’s what it means to build not just a career, but a life—one where the risks are great, but the rewards are even greater. And that’s why, every morning, I wake up and ask myself: What could go wrong? Because I know that no matter what the answer is, I’m ready to face it head-on, with the same drive and passion that has carried me this far. And that’s what will continue to carry me forward, no matter what challenges lie ahead.

My path through the world of STEM, specifically construction management, has been both challenging and transformative. Inspired by my father, a veteran in commercial construction, I embarked on this journey with a clear vision to lead and innovate in an industry ripe for change. However, as a young woman in a field dominated by men, I have faced significant adversity, each instance shaping my resolve and fueling my commitment to pursue a career in STEM. The challenge begins with my dual role: managing large-scale construction projects by day and pursuing a rigorous academic program in Construction Management by night. These responsibilities alone demand exceptional dedication, but the added complexity of navigating the construction industry as one of its few female project managers amplifies this challenge. On construction sites, I am often one of the only women present, regularly encountering skepticism regarding my capabilities and decisions. This skepticism forces me to continuously prove my worth and expertise, demanding not just the usual professional excellence but also the constant assertion of my leadership and technical skills. The adversity does not end there. Balancing these professional challenges with my educational pursuits is compounded by the economic realities of living and studying in South Florida, one of the most expensive regions in the United States. The financial strain of self-funding my education while managing living expenses adds another layer of difficulty, making each day a strategic effort to maintain both academic and professional excellence without succumbing to financial pressures. These experiences of overcoming adversity are not setbacks, but rather powerful motivators. They have deepened my understanding of the barriers women face in STEM fields, particularly in roles that require both physical presence on construction sites and intellectual command in academic settings. This unique intersection of challenges has not only tested my resilience but has also enriched my academic journey, allowing me to bring a unique perspective to classroom discussions, particularly in areas concerning project management and sustainable practices. My passion for STEM is fueled by these experiences. It is driven by a desire to change the industry from within, advocating for more sustainable construction methods and greater diversity within the field. I aim to lead by example, demonstrating that innovative, effective leadership can come from anyone, regardless of gender. By opening my own construction firm, I plan to implement these values, ensuring that the future of construction not only builds structures but also builds opportunities for inclusion and innovation. The support of this scholarship would be a pivotal aid in my journey, allowing me to focus more fully on completing my degree and advancing my professional goals. It would not only alleviate the financial burden I currently face but also serve as an endorsement of my efforts to pave a more inclusive and progressive path in the construction industry. Your support would empower me to turn the adversities I've faced into avenues for advocacy and change, enhancing the field of construction management with new ideas and diverse perspectives.
