As a child, I struggled with a learning disability that made school a constant challenge. I had Dyspraxia, which affected my coordination and motor skills, making everyday tasks and schoolwork particularly difficult. Despite my diagnosis, I did not qualify for special education services and had to navigate these challenges on my own. This experience, filled with frustration and perseverance, ultimately shaped my passion for becoming a special education teacher. Professor Harold Bloom's words, "I have learned that the purpose of teaching is to bring the student to his or her sense of his or her own presence," resonate deeply with me. This statement highlights the transformative power of teaching, which goes beyond imparting knowledge to fostering self-awareness and personal growth. For me, this means creating an inclusive and supportive environment where every student feels valued and understood. Currently, I teach math in a residential facility for incarcerated youth. My focus is on personalized instruction tailored to each student's unique needs and strengths. By fostering a growth mindset, I encourage my students to embrace their individuality and believe in their potential. I build strong relationships with each student, taking the time to understand their aspirations and challenges. This approach empowers them to take ownership of their learning journey and see themselves as capable, confident individuals. For example, one of my students struggles with understanding two-step equations. To help him, I create interactive math activities that break down each step of the problem-solving process. I use visual aids and hands-on materials to make abstract concepts more concrete. By providing positive reinforcement and celebrating his progress, I help him build his confidence and develop a sense of accomplishment in math. Another student finds it difficult to stay focused during math lessons. To support her, I incorporate movement and sensory breaks into our sessions. I use tools like stress balls and fidget spinners to help her manage her attention. Additionally, I design math games that involve physical activity, such as solving problems through a scavenger hunt. These strategies help my student stay engaged and motivated, allowing her to experience success in math. Through these personalized approaches, I aim to help my students recognize their strengths, embrace their individuality, and develop the confidence to pursue their dreams. By guiding them to a sense of their own presence, I hope to empower them to succeed not only in school but in life.
