The phrase "Follow your passion" may appear to be straightforward advice, implying that one should seek out enjoyable work and pursue it. However, individual interests vary significantly, and not everyone aspires to become a mechanic. Personally, I have always harbored a strong passion for the automotive sector. I consider myself fortunate, as mechanics play an essential role in the functioning of contemporary society; without their expertise, the seamless operation of our daily lives would be at risk. For example, if delivery trucks were to break down, the distribution of food and goods to retail outlets would be severely affected. Moreover, agricultural machinery demands skilled repair work, as tractors and combines are integral to our food supply chain. Therefore, the role of mechanics is crucial to the functioning of the modern economy. Engaging with machines has been a persistent passion of mine for as long as I can remember. Upon recognizing its importance to my success, I have dedicated myself to this field. The achievements I have attained thus far are guiding me toward establishing a career in this area. My internship at the auto shop has provided me essential hands-on experience in fundamental automotive maintenance and repair, marking it as one of my major accomplishments. In my educational journey, I am committed to attaining a high level of excellence. Each day, I challenge myself to improve and consistently uphold a positive demeanor. I treat everyone with respect and engage in courteous interactions. My academic performance reflects this dedication is clearly demonstrated by my academic results, as I have achieved a GPA that does not fall below 3.8. I strive to exemplify my best qualities in the presence of others, so that I may be regarded as a role model and set a high standard for those around me. Earning an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree is an essential part of my plan to pursue a career as a diesel mechanic at a local shop in Whatcom County, where my family lives. I find the diesel mechanic profession intriguing because it combines practical work with problem-solving. This career path will allow me to apply the skills I have developed and contribute positively to a local company. The fulfillment that comes from knowing my work is crucial in keeping essential equipment operational is significant. Additionally, this scholarship would provide me with the opportunity to engage more deeply in community service, where I can explore my potential to assist those in need. I hold scholarships in high regard, particularly those that have a profound impact on families like mine. As a first-generation college student, this financial support would help cover essential expenses such as food and bills. Without scholarship assistance, attending college would not be feasible for me, as I lack financial support from my family. Consequently, I cannot emphasize enough the life-altering potential of this scholarship. Receiving this scholarship will allow me to prioritize my academic goals without the weight of financial stress, facilitating my personal development, contributing to my family's financial security, and enabling me to engage more fully with the community. Thank you for considering my application. Sincerely, Raziel Burrell

    Elizabeth Schalk Memorial Scholarship
Dear Scholarship Committee, I am deeply moved by the Elisabeth Schalk memorial mission to support students impacted by mental health challenges, particularly those who have lost a loved one to suicide. My own experience with the tragic loss of my step son to suicide has profoundly changed my life in June 17th 2024. This was the day We lost my spouse 17yr son to suicide. He had been strangled with depression and although we were aware he had it. We had no idea it was that bad. We just thought it was a teenager thing and that he would grow out of it. Little did we know that it would take him from us. This is why I have such a high desire to advocate for mental health awareness and support systems that could have potentially prevented such a devastating outcome. This loss left a gaping hole in our lives, accompanied by a profound sense of grief and confusion. Witnessing struggles with mental health issues, coupled with the stigma surrounding the topic, made it difficult to fully understand the depth of pain. This experience has fueled my determination to pursue a career and to get the most out of my life. Since our loss, I have actively sought to educate myself about mental health. This has not only helped me process my own grief but has also instilled a deep commitment to raising awareness and promoting open dialogue about mental health challenges. I believe that by sharing my story and utilizing my academic pursuits, I can contribute to the creation of a more supportive environment for individuals struggling with mental health issues. My career objective is to become a Diesel mechanic. This will be a wonderful career for me because I've always enjoyed repairing trucks and equipment. Seeing that I enjoy working hands-on. I know how vital mechanics are to the world and without them it would not run smoothly. That is why mechanics are so important in today's economy. I'd like to start by saying this scholarship would be life-changing for me and I don't take that lightly seeing that I am a first generation college student. The money will help me pay for basic things like food and bills. Growing up we didn't have money for basic needs as my parents had low income jobs when they had ones we often lived with family to make ends meet. This is why it is important for me to go to college but without the help from scholarships I could not attend college due to everyday expenses like rent, power, gas, food, insurance. I don't have financial help like some people my age and therefore. I am paying for college on my own and trying to get help from committees like this one so I can stay committed to completing college and change the outcome of my future generations getting us out of poverty. I can't say enough how much scholarship like this one will literally be life changing. Track to the Trades
I've heard so many times in life that you can't live off of your passions. I don't believe that to be true. Going to the diesel program will allow me to work in a field that I've always had a passion for. Picture this, an overweight kid with holes in his shoes they are literally taped together walking into a brand new school. Not only once but over and over again it was like my life was stuck on repeat seeing that we moved schools yearly. I love my parents but luckily I have learned from a young age that you can't just pack up and move on from your problems. you have to fix the person and or thing causing them in the first place and build up from there. Keeping to myself didn't help in my being overweight. However, I knew that if I kept to myself I'd be mostly left alone. Sure I could have tried to stand up to the bullies. But even at a young age, I was smart enough to know that if I did anything in return I would be no better than the bullies. When I was young I always hoped something or somebody would come along and save me from this so-called reality of mine but as the years went by I realized I could no longer wait for help. So in high school, I started to look into my interests and hobbies. I have always been into cars and trucks as lots of young men are. I was able to get an internship at a local auto shop and this gave me motivation to keep going. As a teen, this was crucial for me. During my internship, I was able to work part-time for the shop. Not only did this help my family financially, I was also able to learn so many things and my passion in the automotive world grew even stronger. As an adult, I will once again take back control. College will help me not only obtain a job but also gain a career. The education and skills I will get from college will open countless doors for my future. Instead of waiting for something to happen I will go to college and make it happen. Not everyone wants to be a mechanic but I have always had a passion for the automotive industry. I have chosen to go into the diesel mechanics program because I admire this line of work. I know how vital mechanics are to the world and without them it would not run smoothly. That is why mechanics are so important in today's economy. This is one of the reasons I am so eager to pursue a career as a diesel mechanic. I will do so using my childhood to motivate my success. Therefore low-income will no longer be a barrier and will no longer be a part of not only me but also my family's future. It will show me how far I have come. I will flourish in college and become an active role model for my future generation. And with the success of my efforts, I will succeed in my career. This scholarship will allow me to focus on my studies instead of worrying about working to get by and therefore I will be able to invest in myself for my family's financial well-being.
