I have a vision of my daughter inheriting a future full of opportunity; with a mind and heart ready to conquer. My dream is to leave my daughter a legacy of erasing the stench of mental, emotional, physical and spiritual oppresion off our bloodline and reclaiming our true identities in Christ. I am a great candidate because I have a noble cause. For- what I want for my daughter, I want for all our daughters. It is the future I work towards. A dollar awarded for my education will be a dollar working directly towards that future.

Teacher asks his students “What do we see in nature that embodies an indomitable will and why?” Power shouts “the wild boar that thrashes relentlessly at the ground perfectly embodies an indomitable spirit, for the ground has no choice but to burst open under its tusks.” Time whispered “No, no; it is the cold of course. For what in winter doesn’t feel the frost in their bones?” Wisdom smiles and almost sings “Both of you are wrong, it is the running water. For the only power it has is consistency, yet, it is able to cut through mountains.”
The aforementioned parable illustrates the various shades of what makes a will indomitable. There is a power associated with an indomitable will. This power is the ability to bring about a desired outcome through strength. I resonate with this attribute in the sense that when I see my goal ahead of me, I charge forward with intention and confidence. The boar may be wild but it is not a senseless beast raging, it is calculated with its strength. It hones its power and allows its experiences to increase its strength. I share in this habit of exerting calculated strength and intentionality in achieving what I set out to do. With strength also comes permeance.
Another characteristic of an indomitable spirit, is it hard to stop or prevent from coming to be. If it is within the Will of the Father, it is mine. There is this security and assurance in what is for me will be for me. Purpose and an indomitable spirit walk hand in hand. I do not have to see the full vision, I just know that as long as I walk with integrity and purpose, my path is set for good things. Purpose I do not control but how I spend my time, I can take an active role.
The third attribute that I exhibit that is a tell of an indomitable spirit is consistency. Consistency is the cornerstone of an impenetrable spirit. Where power is likely to fail consistency picks up the slack. Consistency allows preparation for purpose. I would love to say I am a perfect person who always does what they set out to. However, it is freeing to state that I am imperfect and trying my best. My success comes from my consistency in doing the little things more often than not. I think it is also important to note that an indomitable spirit does not have to be an intense show of force. The real ‘power’ in an indomitable will is consistency, not force.
I aspire to be like Christ in all that I do. An attribute that I believe each person should seek to steadily grow in is servanthood leadership. I believe that I, and each person who aspires anything that operates in the framework of community, should seek to grow in this attribute for perpetuity is as westerners we tend to be individualistic. Our culture is fodder for narcissism. More and more this idea of servant leadership becomes a foreign concept. We have to consciously fight “me only” thinking. In my opinion a true leader is one who is a servant first. As Christ spent His last hours breathing washing the feet of His students, I too aspire to be this selfless. What are some flaws of mine that stand in the way?
First, I wonder how much of my aspiration to be this selfless is made of my desire to love others as Christ and how much of it is for others to look at me with admiration? The Bible tells us that our hearts are deceitful above all things. Paul writes in anguish how he does the things that he hates. My first step will be to test all thoughts before Gospel. Ask God’s Spirit to expose in my heart the things that are not like Him. Adonai wants to work with us. There are also steps I can take to grow in servant leadership.
The second step on my journey to growth would be to study the life of Christ and seek to understand Christ’s heart and rationale. The hope is that once I have a better understanding of the heart of Jesus Christ that I can compare the desires of my heart to it and pray to have a heart like Christ. Christ was the perfect example of how to human. In order to be a servant leader, I must be driven by love. Love for Christ, love for my neighbor and love for myself. A heart of self- interests is not leading.
Once I have studied out the characteristics of Christ. I can then apply these principals to every day situations. It will take practice but through prayer and application, I can become a servant leader.
