PAC: Diversity Matters Scholarship
Coming from a small village in India, being constantly abused and humiliated, where rarely anyone goes to college, and everyday life is a struggle for most people, I understand that being a first-generation college graduate is a great privilege and responsibility to help people and make the world a better place. I will try to be a good example to other people who wish to go to college and just succeed in life. I want to represent my community and culture, but not be limited by it. I am a proud member of the entire human race.
I am a Teaching assistant for organic chemistry and cell & Molecular biology, a pre-med mentor, commuter mentor and front desk assistant at the student centre of my university, and always helping my mentees and fellow students. This has taught me that there is no joy like the one you get from serving people. That's what I want to do for the rest of my life. I am so grateful that I have this opportunity. If you have the chance to make someone's life better is a privilege.
I have been through all kinds of struggles for my entire life. Being a gay person, I was never accepted by my family, my classmates and my society back in India and was always bullied and abused constantly. It always made me think that I would go nowhere in life, but I kept believing that someday I would be free. Although I am in America now and my life is much better, but not really. I am still going through sexual abuse, violence and threats. But I can not move out as I am totally financially dependent on the people I live with, and I cannot work off campus as I am an international student. I need scholarships so that I can afford my tuition, move out and make my life better.
All of my time I devote to my jobs of helping my mentees, my studies and MCAT preparation and research. The rest of the time, I am volunteering at a hospital, or a cancer fundraiser or Habitat for Humanity. I volunteer on many occasions on campus, like 9/11 day of service and Friends day, where we give a day full of joy and games to specially able children. I strive to succeed and help people like me in their struggle, and this scholarship will help in that.

Maxwell Tuan Nguyen Memorial Scholarship
When I was severely sick in high school with jaundice, I felt like I was going to die, and I collapsed with immense stomach pain and was crying out for help. I was rushed to the hospital, and like a miracle, the doctors and nurses made me feel all ok. That moment made me realise what a great privilege and power it is to work in the medical field, and I want to be a fellow member of that community and save lives just like mine was saved. That moment ignited a fire in me that is still burning strong, and it gets more intense as I now study science in college, which I love.
