“I feel terrible, I’ve had this cold for weeks,” my friend said, her voice muffled behind her mask.
“Why don’t you just go to the doctor?” I asked.
She deadpanned, “You think I haven’t tried? My doctor hasn’t been available for the past month.”
That conversation unsettled me. I understood that low-income families often struggle with healthcare costs, but I had never fully considered other barriers such as physician shortages, transportation difficulties, and language obstacles. What I once saw as a distant issue suddenly became personal.
The problem grew even more real when my best friend's father was diagnosed with stage three stomach cancer. His surgeries were repeatedly delayed, and every appointment required exhausting travel. Watching my friend and her family face these systemic obstacles during a medical crisis, despite having access to resources, reshaped my understanding of healthcare accessibility. Without these experiences, I might never have grasped how deeply structural these problems are.
As an officer of Panther’s Exploring Medicine, a medical club at my school, I felt a responsibility to act. Instead of limiting our meetings to career discussions, I redirected our focus toward community impact. I organized blood drives with local hospitals that not only addressed donor shortages but also educated students about the constant demand for lifesaving resources. I recruited classmates to volunteer with medical nonprofits and retirement homes, helping them see healthcare disparities firsthand rather than as distant statistics.
Through these initiatives, we doubled student volunteer participation and strengthened our school’s connection to local healthcare efforts. More importantly, we created awareness. Students began to recognize that healthcare inequities are not isolated incidents but widespread challenges affecting the communities around us.
Moving forward, I hope to deepen my involvement by working with local free clinics and community health organizations, while also helping develop multilingual resources and workshops that empower families facing similar obstacles to access care with greater clarity and confidence. I also want to improve online health resources, such as TeleHealth, which will allow physicians to communicate with their patients online and prioritize patients so everyone can receive the best treatment.
These experiences taught me that meaningful change often begins with listening. What started as a simple conversation became a commitment to addressing healthcare accessibility. This is a commitment I plan to deepen throughout my future in medicine.

The neurologist's gentle voice made my dad tense, but at seven, I was more focused on my newest Shopkin toy than understanding what epilepsy meant.
Overnight, my life was filled with rules. I had to avoid sunlight, track my sleep, and log my meals and naps. Every single detail mattered. It was tedious, constantly monitoring my day when all I wanted was to play outside with my friends. Being forced to notice every small change in my body taught me to be more careful and aware of details most kids never have to think about.
Normal activities like playing outside now made my head feel like it was on fire. I accepted this, quietly swearing off sports, until high school.
When the brochure for my high school arrived, I traced over the glossy blue letters reading: cross country. Something inside me insisted I try. I wanted to see if the girl who cowered from sunlight could run. My parents were skeptical, but I was stubborn. With a face covered in SPF and a huge hat, they finally sent me to my first practice.
The first run was brutal. Unlike the carefree runners around me, I was hyperaware of every signal my body gave: the heat on my skin, the tightness in my chest, the dizziness telling me to slow down.
The heat seemed to weigh me down. Halfway through, an upperclassman slowed down to run with me.
“You okay?” she asked.
“Trying not to melt,” I wheezed back.
She laughed and ran with me for the remaining mile, sharing her own struggles during tryouts. She gave me tips on breathing techniques, running with a partner, and logging detailed notes on my performance and recovery.
After that upperclassman gave me tips on pacing, I realized the same meticulousness I used to monitor my seizures could guide me through running. While my teammates could run without thinking, I had to run thoughtfully, checking in with myself and adjusting. This caution made me more resilient.
This mindset translated to my academics. Managing harder classes, sports practices, and my health demanded more organization than ever. I learned to plan ahead, take detailed notes, and track deadlines. Instead of letting high school's pace overwhelm me, I used that carefulness to stay steady and prepared.
Epilepsy taught me to be careful, but facing this challenge taught me how to turn that carefulness into resilience and confidence in running and myself.
