Teaching Like Teri Scholarship
My mom has spent most of her life working in education, and she is the biggest inspiration in my life. She started off as a daycare worker and later transitioned into becoming a special needs teacher. Watching her grow in her career and dedicate herself to helping others has had a huge impact on me. I have seen her face major setbacks and challenges, yet she continues to push forward with strength and determination as if nothing can hold her back. Her resilience has shown me what it truly means to persevere.
Being the child of a teacher has come with its own challenges. There have been moments where I felt frustrated or overwhelmed, but looking back, I wouldn’t change that experience for anything. It has given me a deeper understanding of what teachers go through and how much they pour into their students every single day. My mom introduced me to the world of teaching at a young age, and from that point on, I always knew I wanted to be a teacher when I grew up—well, either a teacher or an astronaut.
I have had the opportunity to see my mom in the classroom, and it is something I will never forget. The light, kindness, and patience she shows to her students is truly inspiring. She treats every child with compassion and understanding, no matter their situation. Watching her interact with her students made me realize the kind of person I want to be. I strive to treat everyone I meet with grace, to show God’s love through my actions, and to always offer a kind smile.
My passion for teaching has not only come from my mom, but also from one of my agriculture teachers. My ag teacher is constantly at school, putting in so much effort for her students without ever complaining. She shows humility and a genuine love for what she does, and it is clear that she cares deeply about her students’ success. Seeing her dedication has reinforced my desire to become a teacher and make a difference.
The drive to pursue teaching also comes from the impact that past teachers have had on my life. They have shown me that you can change a student’s life in the simplest ways, even by just saying “hey” in the hallway. Those small moments can mean more than we realize.
When I become a teacher, my goal is to create a classroom that feels like a safe place. I want my students to know they have someone they can trust, someone they can talk to, and someone who will listen when they need to let off steam. I want to be that steady, supportive presence in their lives, just like my mom and my teachers have been for me.
