Bio

Hello my name is Rachel! I am 26 years old and currently live in WA. After a few years of trying to figure out what I wanted to do in my life I finally feel like I figured out what I would like to do. I pursued many different things only to realize that they aren't what I actually wanted. From teaching ESL, surgical tech, communications and flight attendant. I've come to the decision that I would like to become a nurse. Now becoming a nurse isn't my main goal. My long term goal is to become a Physician's assistant but there is still a long road to that dream. It's exciting to finally have a goal of what I would like to study and become. I want to run towards these dreams regardless.

    TLau "Love Fiercely" Scholarship
One of my most memorable outdoor experiences was hiking the Wonderland Trail around Mount Rainier. This experience not only changed how I view the outdoors but also deeply influenced my personal growth and career aspirations. My journey with education and my love for the outdoors both had a rough start. Throughout my early twenties, I struggled with anxiety and a fear of missing out. I often felt like everyone else was advancing in life while I was stuck, unsure of where to go or what to do next. This sense of uncertainty and insecurity held me back from pursuing my passions, particularly outdoor activities like backpacking, hiking, and snowboarding. I didn’t have anyone to do these things with, so I avoided them altogether. At 23, I hit a turning point. While navigating a breakup, I found myself suddenly forced out of my comfort zone. It was during this period of personal reflection and change that I made a decision: I would stop waiting for others and start doing the things I truly wanted to do. I purchased all the snowboarding equipment I had been dreaming of and set out on my own. This newfound independence became a turning point for me. I embraced the idea that I didn’t need others' approval or companionship to do what made me happy. That mindset began to shape my approach to all areas of my life. The most pivotal moment came when I hiked the Wonderland Trail. The 100-mile trek around Mount Rainier took me nine days and eight nights. It pushed my body to its limits, and by the end, I was exhausted and physically broken. However, I pushed through the pain, telling myself, "I can do this." The experience became not just a physical test but a mental one. Every day, I overcame fatigue, discomfort, and doubt, and by the end of the trail, I felt a sense of accomplishment that was far greater than the physical endurance it took to complete it. The journey taught me resilience, strength, and mental fortitude. This experience shaped my life by instilling a deep, unshakeable confidence in myself. The iron-willed determination I discovered on that trail transferred to all aspects of my life, especially in my educational journey. I now know that no challenge is too great for me to tackle. The confidence I gained through that hiking adventure taught me that I can push through difficult times, and it inspired me to keep going, no matter how challenging or uncertain things may seem. Today, as I continue my path toward becoming a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) in oncology, I carry that same strength and determination with me. I want to be a source of unwavering support for cancer patients during their most difficult times. Just like I pushed my body to the limit on the Wonderland Trail, I want to be that "iron bar" of support for others—someone who can stand firm and help guide them through their darkest days. The mindset I developed in the wilderness has shaped my approach to challenges, both academic and personal, and will continue to drive me as I pursue my goal of providing compassionate care to those who need it most.
    Gerianne Pfeiffer Native American Scholarship
Growing up with a Native American heritage, specifically being 1/4 Osage, has had a profound impact on my education and future goals. My grandfather, who passed away from lung cancer before I was born, has influenced me deeply, especially as I have pursued a career in healthcare. His death, along with my observations of health issues within my community, including the widespread impact of alcohol and tobacco, has fueled my determination to seek a career in oncology, where I can make a difference in the lives of those battling cancer. Living on the reservation has shaped my perspective on life in ways that can be both difficult and enlightening. I have seen the challenges that many Native families face, including the limited access to resources and education, as well as the societal struggles resulting from historical injustices. These experiences sometimes evoke feelings of anger and grief. I cannot ignore the harsh realities that come with living in a community that has been deeply affected by colonization, poverty, and health disparities. However, these challenges have also given me a sense of resilience and determination to not only succeed but to help others in my community rise above the struggles we face. One of the biggest obstacles for many Native Americans is the cost of education. Education, while a pathway to opportunity, often seems out of reach due to the financial burdens it places on individuals and families. I believe that, as a Native person, I should be afforded more access to education as a form of reparations for the wrongs done to our people. The legacy of colonization has stripped much from us, and education is one area where I feel we should be given the support and opportunities to thrive. I recognize that education is expensive everywhere, but the historical context of our communities makes the cost feel even more prohibitive. Despite these challenges, I am fortunate enough to have the support of my tribe through a scholarship program designed for Native students. While this support may not be vast, it is enough to encourage me to keep pushing forward. The scholarship is a reminder that I am not alone in this journey and that my tribe believes in my potential. It fuels my resolve to continue my education, and to one day achieve my goal of becoming a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) in the field of oncology. In the future, I hope to make my tribe proud by showing that one of their daughters has risen to the top of her field. I aspire to use my success to invest back into my community, to help fund educational opportunities for future generations of Native Americans. I want to break the cycle of poverty and limited access to resources that so many in my community face, and I want to inspire others to pursue their dreams, knowing that they too can achieve greatness, no matter the obstacles. My Native American background has not only shaped my approach to education but also informed my professional aspirations. I want to contribute to the health and well-being of my community, especially in areas like cancer care, which has affected my own family. My education and career goals are driven by a deep desire to uplift my people, provide more opportunities for Native youth, and ensure that our voices are heard in healthcare, education, and beyond. Through my success, I hope to pave the way for future generations of Native Americans who will continue to break barriers and achieve their dreams.
    Jim Coots Scholarship
Receiving this scholarship would be a transformative step in my journey toward becoming a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) and making a meaningful contribution to the field of holistic health and healing. As I work towards this goal, the scholarship would provide essential financial support that would allow me to focus more fully on my education and personal well-being. Growing up in a low-income household, I learned early on the value of nutrition and the importance of living a healthy, balanced lifestyle. My parents, who are from Japan, taught me that food is not just a necessity but also a tool for healing and prevention. They emphasized that what we eat directly impacts how our bodies function and feel, an idea that has shaped my approach to health and wellness. This scholarship would enable me to access better resources and opportunities for maintaining my health. I would be able to afford whole foods and cook nourishing meals for myself, a fundamental part of the lifestyle I want to promote to others in the future. It would also allow me to meet basic living needs, reducing stress and enabling me to dedicate more time and energy to my studies. With this support, I would be able to focus on my coursework, internships, and research without the constant worry of financial instability, which can often be a barrier to success for students from low-income backgrounds. The impact I hope to make in the field of holistic health is significant. I believe that in today’s society, many people resort to medications and pharmaceutical treatments as quick fixes for their health issues, often without considering the deeper, underlying factors that contribute to their conditions. While I fully acknowledge and support the use of medications in necessary situations, I also believe that we should take a more comprehensive approach to health. The food we eat, the environments we live in, and the choices we make in our daily lives all play a crucial role in determining our overall health. Unfortunately, many people fail to recognize this, often seeking immediate solutions in the form of pills rather than addressing the root causes of their ailments. As I pursue a career in nursing, particularly in oncology, I want to be part of a movement that helps people explore both medical and holistic avenues for improving their health. Oncology patients are often in some of the most challenging times of their lives, physically and emotionally. I want to support them not only with medical treatments but also by integrating holistic practices that focus on nurturing the body, mind, and spirit. Whether through nutrition, stress management, or creating a healing environment, I believe there is immense potential to improve patients’ quality of life and outcomes by taking a more holistic approach to their care. I hope to bridge the gap between conventional medicine and alternative therapies, advocating for a more well-rounded approach that treats the person as a whole. This scholarship will not only help me advance academically, but it will also support me in building the foundation for a career where I can make a lasting impact on the health and well-being of others. I am committed to helping people see that they have the power to improve their health through both medical care and the holistic practices that often go unrecognized in modern medicine. With this scholarship, I can further my education and one day help transform the way we think about and approach health and healing in this country.
Henry Respert Alzheimer's and Dementia Awareness Scholarship
As a child, my grandmother's battle with Alzheimer's disease left a profound impact on me, despite my young age at the time. While I couldn't fully comprehend the complexities of her condition, one memory that stands out was the mesmerizing melodies she effortlessly played on the piano, even as her memory faded into a fog of forgetfulness. Her ability to recall intricate tunes from memory, while struggling to recognize her own loved ones, left an undeniable mark on my understanding of Alzheimer's and dementia. Fast forward to my adult years, and I find myself drawn to a career path that allows me to make a difference in the lives of those affected by these devastating neurological disorders. This passion led me to apply for a position at a memory care facility, where I have now served as a caregiver for over a year. Each day, I am confronted with the harsh realities faced by individuals with Alzheimer's and dementia, as well as the emotional toll it takes on their families. Working closely with residents at various stages of cognitive decline has taught me invaluable lessons in empathy, patience, and the importance of human connection. Despite the challenges they face, I see each resident as a unique individual with a rich history and a lifetime of experiences. It's humbling to witness their resilience and to be a part of their journey, providing care and support in their moments of vulnerability. Another part of my job is interacting with family members who grapple with the gradual loss of their loved one's identity. Spouses, children, and relatives visit, each coping in their own way with the changes brought about by Alzheimer's and dementia. I have come to understand the depth of a mother's love as I witness a resident who, despite her cognitive decline, remembers her daughter with remarkable clarity; frozen in time to when her daughter was a newborn. These interactions remind me of the profound impact of family bonds and the resilience of the human spirit in adversity. My experiences at the memory care facility have solidified my commitment to a career in healthcare. While I am currently pursuing nursing education, my ultimate goal is to specialize in oncology nursing. The parallels between caring for individuals with Alzheimer's and those battling cancer are evident—the need for compassion, support, and holistic care that addresses not just the physical but also the emotional and psychological aspects of illness. In oncology nursing, I aspire to be a source of comfort and strength for patients and their families during what may be the most challenging times of their lives. Just as I have learned from my residents at the memory care facility, I believe that every person deserves to be seen, heard, and treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their health condition or cognitive abilities. In conclusion, my journey from witnessing my grandmother's struggle with Alzheimer's to my current role as a caregiver has shaped my values, aspirations, and dedication to making a meaningful impact in healthcare. I am grateful for the opportunities that have allowed me to learn, grow, and contribute to the well-being of others, and I look forward to continuing this journey of compassion and service in the field of nursing.
    Martha Galvez Memorial Scholarship
As I embark on my journey in nursing, my ultimate goal is to make a profound and lasting difference in the lives of those affected by cancer. Currently attending nursing school and working part-time at a memory care facility, I have been exposed to the challenges and complexities of caring for individuals with varying health needs. It is within this environment that my passion for oncology nursing has been ignited, driving my determination to provide compassionate care and support to cancer patients and their families. The experiences I have had while working in memory care have been deeply impactful. Many of the residents I interact with have either battled cancer in the past or are currently facing this formidable disease. Witnessing firsthand the toll that cancer takes on individuals, especially as they age, has strengthened my resolve to specialize in oncology nursing. It is a field that demands not only medical expertise but also empathy, resilience, and a deep understanding of the physical and emotional challenges faced by patients. Cancer is a disease that transcends individual lives; it affects families, caregivers, and communities. My aspiration as an oncology nurse is to be a beacon of hope and support during the darkest and most vulnerable moments of someone's life. I want to bring positivity, compassion, and a sense of humanity to every interaction, ensuring that patients feel valued, heard, and cared for. One of the aspects that motivates me the most is the opportunity to help patients maintain their sense of dignity and personhood throughout their cancer journey. It's about more than just administering treatments or managing symptoms; it's about being a source of comfort, understanding, and advocacy. Whether it's holding a patient's hand during a difficult procedure, providing emotional support to a family member, or advocating for the best possible care, I am committed to going above and beyond to make a meaningful difference. Looking ahead, while I aim to become an oncology nurse initially, my long-term goal is to transition into a role as a Physician Assistant (PA). This transition will further expand my capabilities to deliver comprehensive care, collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, and contribute to the advancement of healthcare outcomes for cancer patients. In conclusion, my journey in nursing is guided by a deep-seated passion for oncology and a steadfast commitment to improving the lives of those affected by cancer. Through empathy, dedication, and continuous learning, I strive to be a catalyst for positive change in the field of healthcare, bringing hope and healing to individuals and their loved ones facing the challenges of cancer.

My journey through education has been one of determination, self-discovery, and a deep-seated motivation to make a meaningful difference in people's lives. Growing up in a low-income, single-parent household, I was instilled with the importance of education early on. However, the financial constraints and the absence of parental support for student loans meant that my path to college was not straightforward. I earned my Associate of Arts degree at the age of 20, but I didn't immediately continue my education. The uncertainty of what I wanted to study and the daunting cost of further schooling made me pause and reassess my priorities. It wasn't until I was 26 that I made the decision to return to school, driven by a desire to create a better future for myself and my family. One of the biggest challenges I faced was choosing a major and a career path that would align with my passions and provide long-term fulfillment. After much introspection and exploration, I found my calling in nursing. Starting my nursing program at the age of 27, I felt a mix of excitement and apprehension. While some of my peers had already completed their bachelor's degrees and established careers, I knew that my journey was unique and would unfold in its own time. My educational goals are clear and ambitious. I aim to graduate from my nursing program next year at the age of 28 and pursue a career as an oncology nurse. The field of oncology has always held a special place in my heart. Witnessing the struggles and triumphs of my closest friends who battle major health issues has fueled my passion to make a difference in the lives of those facing similar challenges. I want to be a source of strength and support during the most difficult moments, offering compassionate care and understanding. Beyond my immediate career goals, I aspire to become a Physician Assistant (PA) in the future. This path aligns with my desire to expand my skills and knowledge, enabling me to provide comprehensive care to patients across various healthcare settings. My motivation stems from a deep-rooted commitment to excellence in healthcare and a genuine desire to positively impact the lives of others. While my journey may not follow the traditional timeline of higher education, I believe that every experience, whether it's traveling in my early 20s or returning to school later in life, has shaped me into the resilient and determined individual I am today. My academic history reflects not only my dedication to continuous learning but also my unwavering passion for serving others and making a difference in the world. In conclusion, my academic journey is driven by a strong sense of purpose and a commitment to personal and professional growth. I embrace the challenges and opportunities that come my way, knowing that each step forward brings me closer to realizing my dreams of a fulfilling career in healthcare.

Cancer has woven its way through the tapestry of my family's history, leaving a profound impact on both my personal and professional life. While I consider my direct encounters with cancer relatively limited compared to some, the experiences I've had have shaped my worldview and career aspirations in significant ways. One of the earliest encounters with cancer in my family was with my uncle, a man whose infectious humor illuminated even the darkest of times. Prostate cancer, a prevalent condition on my dad's side, struck him during my high school years. Despite living overseas at the time, I vividly remember the waves of concern and hope that washed over our family as he battled the disease. Through rounds of chemotherapy and extensive therapy, he eventually emerged victorious, free from cancer's grasp. However, the unexpected twist of an infection leading to sepsis robbed us of his presence, underscoring the unpredictability and cruelty of cancer. Fast forward to my current role as a caregiver in a memory care facility, where I tend to residents ranging from 70 to 102 years old. Here, I am confronted daily with the multifaceted impact of cancer on individuals and their families. Many of my residents have undergone mastectomies and regular cancer treatments, bearing the physical and emotional scars of their battles. I recall one resident with testicular cancer who, due to advanced age, opted against treatment, resulting in a heartbreaking enlargement of his testicle. Another resident's refusal of breast cancer treatment led to the agonizing sight of her flesh deteriorating before my eyes, a visceral reminder of the consequences of untreated malignancies. The stories of my residents, each marked by their own unique struggles and triumphs, have profoundly influenced my career trajectory. Witnessing the ravages of cancer firsthand has ignited a passion within me to pursue a path in oncology nursing. As I near the completion of my nursing education, I am driven by a deep-seated desire to provide compassionate care and support to individuals facing their darkest hours. Beyond nursing, I aspire to further my education and become a physician assistant or nurse practitioner, expanding my reach to encompass patients of all ages and backgrounds. Ultimately, my family's encounters with cancer and my experiences in caregiving have imparted invaluable lessons of empathy, resilience, and the fragility of life. They have reinforced my commitment to serving others during their most vulnerable moments, regardless of their support systems or circumstances. Armed with this newfound understanding, I am prepared to embark on a journey dedicated to easing the burdens of those affected by cancer and providing hope in the face of adversity.
    Pool Family LGBT+ Scholarship
Navigating the complexities of gender and sexuality within a relationship can be both challenging and transformative. My journey within the LGBTQ+ community has been deeply intertwined with my experiences as part of a relationship where gender identity played a central role. Growing up, I never felt constrained by traditional notions of attraction. I found both men and women appealing, drawn more to individual connection than to gender. Four years ago, I met my partner, and while I initially didn't have a clear preference, our bond deepened my understanding of my own desires. However, it wasn't until three years into our relationship that my partner shared their internal struggle with gender identity. They confided in me, revealing their discomfort with their assigned gender and the feeling of being in the wrong body. Navigating my partner's journey of self-discovery was both enlightening and challenging. Their transition brought forth discussions, complexities, and moments of reflection. As an Asian woman dating someone going through such a significant change, I grappled with societal expectations and familial approval. Despite the difficulties, I remained committed to supporting my partner through their transition. The journey through hormone therapy and physical changes was not easy. I witnessed the emotional and physical toll it took on my partner, and there were moments of uncertainty and adjustment for both of us. However, amidst the changes, my love and connection to my partner remained steadfast. While their external appearance shifted, the person I fell in love with remained the same at their core. As my partner progresses through their transition, I find myself contemplating my own role and aspirations. Currently pursuing a nursing career, I am driven by a desire to support individuals undergoing similar journeys. My goal is to become a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner, with a focus on working in the operating room. I hope to provide compassionate care to those undergoing gender-affirming surgeries, drawing from my own experiences to offer guidance and support. Looking ahead, I envision a future where I can serve as a source of understanding and empathy for individuals navigating gender identity and transition. While the path may be daunting, I am committed to advocating for inclusivity and acceptance within both the medical field and society at large. By sharing my story and lending my support, I aim to create a more affirming and understanding environment for all individuals within the LGBTQ+ community.
    Met Gala Masterpiece Scholarship
The Met Gala is renowned for its extravagant themes and stunning fashion moments, and one of the most captivating themes in recent years was the 2018 event: Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination. This theme invited attendees to explore the intersection of fashion, religion, and art, resulting in a plethora of creative and sometimes controversial interpretations. Among the myriad of striking ensembles, one outfit that truly encapsulated the theme was worn by Lana Del Rey. Lana Del Rey's ensemble was a masterclass in thematic interpretation and attention to detail. Her gown featured a striking depiction of Our Lady of Sorrows, with seven small swords embedded into a heart at the dress's forefront. This imagery symbolized the sorrows endured by Mary, the mother of Jesus, underscoring the theme's exploration of Catholic iconography and emotion. Additionally, the inclusion of six blue wings forming a circle at the top of the dress paid homage to the Seraphim, a celestial being often depicted in religious art. By incorporating these symbolic elements, Del Rey's outfit not only adhered to the theme but also demonstrated a deep understanding of its cultural and religious significance. What set Del Rey's ensemble apart was not only its adherence to the theme but also its exquisite craftsmanship and attention to detail. The intricate design of the gown, coupled with its rich symbolism, elevated it from mere fashion to a form of artistic expression. Furthermore, Del Rey's commitment to the theme extended beyond her attire, as she exuded an aura of reverence and respect befitting the occasion. On the other end of the spectrum, there were inevitably some outfits that missed the mark in terms of thematic relevance and creativity. One such example was Kylie Jenner's choice of attire for the 2018 Met Gala. Jenner opted for a modern black dress that, while undoubtedly chic, failed to align with the event's theme or capture its spirit. Lacking the thematic depth and artistic flair of other attendees' ensembles, Jenner's outfit felt out of place amidst the ecclesiastical grandeur of the event. In conclusion, the 2018 Met Gala's theme of Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination provided a captivating canvas for sartorial expression, with Lana Del Rey's ensemble standing out as a prime example of thematic interpretation and artistic innovation. Conversely, Kylie Jenner's outfit fell short of the mark, lacking the thematic resonance and creativity that defined the event's most memorable looks. Through their contrasting choices, Del Rey and Jenner exemplified the transformative power of fashion and its ability to evoke emotion, spark dialogue, and transcend the ordinary.

Living sustainably is a deeply ingrained value for me, especially as I witness the tangible effects of climate change in my own surroundings. Growing up near snow-capped mountains that now stand barren during winter, I've seen firsthand the consequences of environmental degradation. While I may not have the power to implement large-scale changes like those in Japan's efficient transportation system, I've made intentional choices in my daily life to minimize my carbon footprint. One significant change I've made is reducing my reliance on single-use plastic. I carry reusable grocery and produce bags whenever I shop, eliminating the need for disposable plastic bags. Additionally, I've adopted a practice of making my own bread, pasta, and sauces using ingredients from my garden. By growing my own vegetables during the summer and preserving them through canning or drying, I not only reduce packaging waste but also decrease my dependence on store-bought goods, which often come with a hefty environmental cost. Furthermore, I've taken up the art of soap-making, not only out of curiosity but also as a sustainable alternative to store-bought soaps packaged in plastic. Creating my own personal care products allows me to control the ingredients and packaging, minimizing waste and environmental impact. When I do purchase items that I can't make myself, I opt for products packaged in reusable or recyclable containers, and I repurpose these containers whenever possible. These small yet intentional choices may seem insignificant on their own, but collectively they contribute to a more sustainable lifestyle. By reducing my consumption of single-use plastics, growing and preserving my own food, and making my own household products, I actively decrease my carbon footprint and lessen the strain on the environment. Reducing my carbon footprint is important to me for several reasons. Firstly, it's a matter of environmental stewardship and responsibility. As inhabitants of this planet, it's our duty to protect and preserve the natural world for future generations. By minimizing our carbon emissions and adopting sustainable practices, we can help mitigate the impacts of climate change and protect vulnerable ecosystems. Secondly, reducing my carbon footprint aligns with my values of mindfulness and simplicity. Living more sustainably encourages me to be more conscious of my consumption habits and to prioritize quality over quantity. It's about embracing a lifestyle that values experiences over possessions and emphasizes the importance of mindful consumption. Finally, reducing my carbon footprint is a way to advocate for systemic change. While individual actions are important, they alone are not enough to address the scale of the environmental challenges we face. By living sustainably and advocating for policies that support environmental protection and sustainability, we can work towards a more equitable and sustainable future for all.

Recovery, to me, embodies the profound journey from shadows to light. It's a liberation from the grip of addiction, emerging from a dark abyss into clarity and hope. Addiction's tendrils entwine not just the individual but also their loved ones, casting a pall over life. Yet, in recovery, those chains are shattered, allowing one to step forward unencumbered. Moreover, recovery heralds a rebirth. It's a chance to rewrite life's narrative, embracing newfound wisdom and fostering healthy habits. This odyssey is deeply personal, each path as unique as the individual traversing it. Setbacks may arise, but they're not synonymous with failure; rather, they signify detours on the road to healing. Ultimately, recovery symbolizes resilience, courage, and the unwavering commitment to reclaiming one's life. It's an affirmation of the human spirit's capacity for transformation, illuminating the journey from darkness to the radiant dawn of possibility.

Navigating the path to higher education has been a journey fraught with obstacles, yet marked by resilience and determination. Coming from a low-income, single-parent household, financial constraints have always loomed large. My father's tireless efforts to provide for our family meant long hours of work, often coming home late to assist me with my studies after a grueling day. Despite the challenges, I've held down multiple jobs while attending school full-time, recognizing the value of hard work and the sacrifices necessary to pursue my educational aspirations. Completing my pre-nursing requirements felt like a marathon, a relentless sprint between classes and shifts, a testament to the relentless pursuit of my goals. It instilled in me a profound appreciation for perseverance and resilience, teaching me that adversity is a part of life, but overcoming it is within my reach. I take pride in funding my education independently, knowing that every hurdle I've cleared has been a testament to my determination and resourcefulness. However, the journey hasn't been without its darker moments. Depression and anxiety have been constant companions, casting a shadow over even the brightest of days. Despite seeking treatment and therapy, the battles within my mind persist. The weight of despair has led me to dark places, culminating in two suicide attempts. The aftermath of these moments of desperation has been a painful reckoning, a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the resilience required to keep moving forward. Yet, amidst the turmoil, a glimmer of hope persists. Despite the darkness, I cling to the belief that the world is a beautiful place, and that there are reasons worth fighting for. The journey through depression is a marathon, one without a clear finish line, but I continue to lace up my shoes and press forward, fueled by the belief that brighter days lie ahead. While financial constraints and mental health challenges have tested my resolve, they have also shaped my character and fortified my determination. Each obstacle I've encountered has only served to strengthen my resolve, reaffirming my commitment to realizing my educational goals. As I continue on this journey, I recognize that the road ahead may be fraught with challenges, but I am armed with the resilience and determination needed to overcome them. My past struggles have not hindered my progress; rather, they have provided me with the strength and resilience necessary to navigate the obstacles that lie ahead. With unwavering determination and a steadfast resolve, I am confident that I will achieve my educational goals and emerge stronger on the other side.

Working while attending school has deeply impacted my ability to manage time. Coming from a low-income background, I learned early on the value of hard work and self-sufficiency. My father, the sole provider for our family, worked tirelessly to support my brother and me. Despite his demanding job, he always found time to assist me with my studies after his long workdays. Since the age of 15, I've held multiple jobs simultaneously to finance my education and support myself. This experience instilled in me a strong work ethic and taught me to balance academic responsibilities with work commitments. However, as I've progressed into my accelerated nursing program, the demands have intensified, making it challenging to maintain the same level of employment. Despite my desire to focus solely on my studies during this critical period, financial constraints necessitate that I continue working weekends to afford essentials like gas for my commute. Juggling a rigorous academic workload, consisting of 17 credits per semester, with weekend employment often leaves me feeling stretched thin and exhausted. Yet, I remain steadfast in my belief that hard work will ultimately lead to success, drawing inspiration from my father's example. Looking toward the future, I aspire to pursue a career as a Physician Assistant (PA) or Nurse Practitioner (NP), specializing in oncology or operating room (OR) procedures. I view my current challenges as stepping stones toward achieving these aspirations. The discipline and time-management skills cultivated through balancing work and education will undoubtedly serve me well in my post-graduate endeavors. Although completing my accelerated nursing program marks a significant milestone, I recognize that further education and dedication lie ahead on the path to my dream career. Continuing to work diligently in both my job and studies will be essential in realizing my ambitions of becoming a highly skilled medical professional. In conclusion, while the demands of working while in school have undoubtedly tested my time-management abilities, they have also instilled in me a profound sense of determination and resilience. I am confident that these qualities will propel me toward achieving my long-term career goals in the medical field.

My goals in the medical field are deeply rooted in my experiences and observations, particularly in my role as a CNA at a memory care facility. As I progress through nursing school, my primary aim is to graduate and specialize in oncology nursing, drawn by the profound impact cancer has had on the lives of those I care for. Working with individuals who have Alzheimer's and dementia has exposed me to the harsh realities of cancer, with many residents having experienced or currently battling various forms of the disease, most commonly breast cancer. Witnessing the physical and emotional toll cancer takes on individuals, especially in their later years, has fueled my desire to make a difference in the lives of cancer patients. In my role, I've encountered firsthand the debilitating effects of cancer treatment, from mastectomies to the psychological strain of prolonged chemotherapy. The sight of metastatic cancer spreading to vital organs, causing hallucinations and excruciating ulcers, has left an indelible impression on me. These experiences have solidified my commitment to providing compassionate care and support to cancer patients, particularly during the critical stages of diagnosis and treatment. My long-term career aspirations extend beyond oncology nursing. While I am currently leaning towards becoming a Physician Assistant (PA) or Nurse Practitioner (NP), I remain open to exploring both paths to determine which aligns best with my professional goals and personal interests. Regardless of the specific role I pursue, my overarching objective is to expand my scope of practice and expertise to positively impact patients' lives at every stage of their healthcare journey. I am driven by a desire to intervene early in patients' lives, offering preventive care and support to minimize the likelihood of them experiencing the severe consequences of cancer later on. By advocating for early detection and comprehensive treatment plans, I aim to empower individuals to take control of their health and well-being, ultimately reducing the burden of disease in our communities. In essence, my career trajectory is guided by a profound sense of purpose—to be a proactive agent of change in the fight against cancer and to provide holistic, patient-centered care that addresses not only the physical but also the emotional and psychological aspects of illness. Through continuous learning, collaboration with interdisciplinary teams, and a commitment to excellence, I am dedicated to making a meaningful difference in the lives of those affected by cancer, both now and in the future.

The question of whether a divine Creator exists is one that has intrigued humanity for millennia. Despite occasional moments that might suggest the presence of a higher power, my personal reflections lead me to lean towards the perspective that there is no such deity. Throughout history, the debate over the existence of a god has persisted, fueled by religious beliefs and philosophical inquiry. My skepticism regarding the existence of a god stems from the harsh realities of the world we inhabit today. We witness countless instances of suffering and injustice, from the plight of refugees seeking sanctuary to the epidemic of gun violence plaguing communities. The looming specter of warfare and the widening chasm between the wealthy elite and the struggling masses further erode my faith in a benevolent divine being. As someone aspiring to enter the field of healthcare, particularly in oncology or surgical nursing, I am confronted daily with the profound suffering of individuals afflicted by terminal illnesses. It is difficult to reconcile the notion of a loving god with the heartbreaking reality of innocent children battling diseases that ravage their bodies. Despite fervent prayers for healing and divine intervention, the harsh truth remains: illness and tragedy often go unanswered by any higher power, leaving individuals feeling abandoned in their darkest hours. In my current role at a memory care facility, I have witnessed firsthand the gradual erosion of faith in individuals who once held steadfast beliefs in a higher power. As dementia robs them of their memories and faculties, even the concept of god becomes a distant and unfamiliar notion. This gradual loss of religious conviction underscores the ephemeral nature of faith and the fragility of human belief in the face of cognitive decline. Moreover, the remarkable advancements in science, technology, engineering, and medicine stand as a testament to human ingenuity and perseverance rather than divine intervention. The development of these disciplines has been driven by human curiosity, innovation, and a desire to alleviate suffering and improve the human condition. Rather than passively waiting for divine miracles, humanity has taken proactive steps to understand and harness the natural world for the betterment of society. While some may still cling to the hope of miraculous intervention, the empirical evidence suggests that the progress of humanity is propelled not by divine decree, but by human endeavor. The pursuit of knowledge and the quest for solutions to humanity's most pressing challenges lie firmly within the realm of human agency, not divine providence.

My journey into climbing began as a natural extension of my love for the outdoors, particularly the majestic mountains that grace the Pacific Northwest landscape where I grew up. Surrounded by these towering peaks, I found solace and inspiration in their presence. However, my path to climbing wasn't just about conquering summits; it was also a deeply personal journey of overcoming challenges and embracing self-discovery. Struggling with depression and anxiety throughout my life, I sought refuge in the wilderness through solo backpacking. The physical exertion and mental focus required by long treks allowed me to push past my limitations and connect with my body's capabilities. As I traversed miles of rugged terrain, I gained confidence in my strength and resilience. Yet, it was during one of these backpacking trips, while observing climbers scaling a distant mountain, that I felt a stirring of curiosity and envy. I yearned to experience the vistas and challenges that only climbers could reach. Inspired by the determination of fellow adventurers, I decided to embark on my own climbing journey. What began as a desire to access inaccessible views evolved into a profound appreciation for the sport's transformative power. Climbing became more than a physical activity; it became a metaphor for my personal growth and acceptance. In the slow, deliberate process of ascending each pitch, I found parallels to my own struggles with body dysmorphia. With each handhold and foothold, I learned to embrace my body's strength and beauty, gaining a newfound sense of self-confidence and acceptance. As I pursued climbing, I discovered valuable lessons that transcended the vertical realm. The discipline, patience, and perseverance required to navigate challenging routes mirrored the qualities necessary for success in my educational pursuits. Starting my nursing journey at the age of 26, I faced doubts and insecurities about being "behind" in my career path. However, climbing taught me the importance of patience and resilience in the face of adversity. Just as I methodically ascend a cliff face, I approach my education one step at a time, trusting in the process and remaining steadfast in my goals. Receiving this scholarship would be instrumental in furthering my educational aspirations. By alleviating financial burdens, it would afford me the opportunity to fully dedicate myself to my studies and pursue my dream of becoming a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant. Like climbing, education is a journey of perseverance and determination, and I am committed to reaching the summit of my academic and professional goals. With the support of this scholarship, I am confident that I can overcome any obstacle and continue my ascent towards success.

In my medical career, my overarching goal is to eventually become a Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA). While I am currently only in my second semester of nursing school, I am still exploring the various branches of nursing to determine which path aligns best with my interests and aspirations. One area that particularly stands out to me is oncology. My interest in oncology stems from my current job at a memory care facility, where I interact daily with residents who have Alzheimer's or dementia, many of whom are also battling cancer. Witnessing the physical and emotional toll of cancer on individuals has deeply impacted me. I have observed firsthand the progression of the disease and its profound effects on both the body and the spirit. This experience has fueled my desire to pursue a career in oncology nursing, where I can provide compassionate care and support to patients facing cancer, regardless of their age or background. However, my ambitions extend beyond my individual career goals. As an Asian American who grew up in a predominantly white community with limited diversity, I have come to appreciate the importance of representation in healthcare. Seeing individuals who look like you can provide a sense of comfort and understanding that is invaluable, especially in vulnerable moments such as facing a serious illness like cancer. Increasing racial diversity in healthcare is essential for several reasons. Firstly, diverse healthcare providers can better understand and address the unique needs and concerns of patients from various racial and ethnic backgrounds. This includes language barriers, cultural differences, and historical mistrust of the healthcare system, all of which can impact access to care and health outcomes. Furthermore, a more diverse healthcare workforce fosters innovation and creativity in addressing healthcare disparities. Different perspectives and experiences contribute to more comprehensive approaches to patient care, ultimately improving the quality of healthcare delivery for all individuals. Additionally, representation matters not only for patients but also for aspiring healthcare professionals from underrepresented backgrounds. Seeing healthcare professionals who share their racial or ethnic identity can inspire and empower them to pursue careers in medicine, thus diversifying the workforce and addressing the systemic inequities that exist within the healthcare field. While I am currently only fluent in English and Japanese, I am committed to advocating for and providing culturally competent care to patients from diverse backgrounds. Whether through language assistance or simply being a compassionate and understanding presence, I hope to make a meaningful impact in bridging the gaps in healthcare access and promoting health equity for all individuals, regardless of race or ethnicity.

In those moments when everything feels bleak and joy seems out of reach, my mother's unwavering support becomes a beacon of hope, reminding me that life is filled with countless blessings waiting to be noticed. Life's journey is marked by challenges, setbacks, and failures, and my story is no exception. Reflecting on the hurdles I faced, I find solace in the lessons learned and the resilience developed through overcoming adversity. One pivotal challenge that significantly shaped my path was the battle with anxiety and depression, a struggle that persisted since my early years. In my formative years, grappling with mental health issues made envisioning a future seem distant and uncertain. The sheer act of reaching my mid-20s felt like an accomplishment, considering the dark periods where the idea of a future seemed elusive. However, the turning point came when I made a conscious decision to change the narrative. I chose life and embarked on a journey of self-discovery and healing. Travel became a therapeutic outlet, a means to break free from the chains of my past struggles. Exploring different cultures, meeting diverse people, and embracing new experiences allowed me to redefine my sense of self. Though unconventional, this period of wandering laid the groundwork for resilience and a newfound appreciation for life. As I confronted the question of life's purpose, a persistent obstacle emerged—the struggle to define my path and pursue a fulfilling career. The societal pressure to follow a linear trajectory, with peers progressing through college and into adult life, added to my feelings of inadequacy. However, the realization that life isn't a race served as a crucial perspective shift. Starting nursing school at 26 marked a new beginning, but a setback in a crucial class threatened to derail my progress. Failing that class meant being held back, joining a different cohort, and battling the nagging sense of being perpetually behind. The setback was a bitter pill to swallow, with no one to blame but myself. Yet, it became the catalyst for turning it up to 11. Acknowledging the financial struggles of growing up in a single-parent, low-income household, where every dollar was stretched to its limit, fueled my determination to break free from the constraints of my past. Working tirelessly, juggling multiple jobs, and committing to grueling 80-hour workweeks during summer vacations became my modus operandi. The goal was not only to fund my education but also to apply for scholarships, illustrating a relentless pursuit of a brighter future. The amalgamation of these experiences has taught me invaluable lessons. I've learned the resilience that arises from facing internal battles and the strength derived from navigating the external challenges of academic and financial adversity. The setbacks and detours in my journey have shaped not just my career aspirations—envisioning becoming a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant—but also my outlook on life. Every stumble, every failure, has been a stepping stone, propelling me forward on a path of self-discovery, growth, and an unwavering commitment to creating a future that defies the shadows of the past.

The inspiration for this career path is rooted in childhood experiences, where frequent visits to Seattle Children's Hospital left an indelible mark on my perspective on healthcare. The pivotal moments that fueled my desire to become a pediatric nurse were closely tied to the health struggles of my cousin and best friend during our formative years. Witnessing my best friend navigate the challenges of a chronic illness, undergoing numerous treatments and hospital stays, showcased the vital role pediatric nurses play in providing empathetic and comprehensive care. It was during these times that I observed the remarkable dedication and playful nature of pediatric nurses, ensuring that despite illness, children could still experience the joys of childhood. Additionally, my cousin's traumatic fall from a tree necessitated prolonged hospitalization, introducing me to the world of pediatric nursing on a different level. The idea of being part of the Operating Room (OR) team further intensifies this commitment. In the OR, I envision providing support during procedures, ensuring that children and their families feel comforted and informed during times of uncertainty. Pediatric nursing represents a unique calling that demands not only medical expertise but also a genuine understanding of the emotional complexities involved. Growing up in a low-income, single-parent household with a frequently absent father, I quickly learned the value of hard work and resilience. However, amidst the challenges of my upbringing, I faced a personal battle with depression that began in my early childhood, casting a shadow over my perception of life. Despite being on antidepressants and anxiety medication, the struggle persisted, leading to a dark moment where I attempted to end my own life. Recovering from such a traumatic incident has been an ongoing journey, one that has shaped my understanding of adversity and resilience. In the aftermath of that difficult period, I embarked on a path of self-discovery and healing. The experience forced me to confront the importance of self-love and appreciation for the beauty that life inherently holds. It became evident that just as I provide care and empathy to the residents I work with – individuals battling dementia and Alzheimer's – I needed to extend that same compassion to myself. My father's mantra, emphasizing the necessity of hard work to achieve one's goals, echoed in my mind. I decided to apply this principle to my own life, not just in terms of external accomplishments but as a means to overcome internal struggles. The journey towards mental and physical well-being became a personal challenge, an opportunity to prove to myself that I could overcome the darkness that had enveloped me. As part of this transformative process, I discovered solace and empowerment in an unexpected passion – solo backpacking. The profound connection with nature, the physical challenges of the trails, and the solitude provided a therapeutic outlet. Solo backpacking became a metaphor for my personal journey, highlighting the strength and resilience within me. The decision to venture into the wilderness alone, facing the unpredictability of the terrain, mirrored my internal quest for self-discovery and healing. The vast landscapes I traversed became a canvas on which I painted my determination to overcome adversity. Every step forward on the trail mirrored my progress in rebuilding my life. Through this journey, I gradually learned to appreciate the beauty of life, recognizing that it extends beyond external accomplishments and societal expectations. Self-love became not just a concept but a daily practice, as essential as breathing. The scars of my past remain, but they serve as reminders of the strength I summoned to rise above the darkness. In caring for residents with dementia and Alzheimer's, I found a profound sense of purpose – a reminder that empathy and compassion can be transformative. This realization, coupled with my personal struggles, has fueled a commitment to use my experiences to advocate for mental health awareness and destigmatization. In my current role as a caregiver at a memory care facility, I have discovered the transformative power of empathy in fostering understanding and connection within the global community. While empathy wasn't explicitly mentioned in the job description when I joined two years ago, it has become a cornerstone of my approach to caregiving, and I believe it will be a key factor in my future endeavors as a nurse and, eventually, a nurse practitioner (NP) or physician assistant (PA). Working with residents in a memory care facility has taught me the invaluable lesson that empathy extends beyond the ability to sympathize – it involves active listening and understanding. Many residents suffer from Alzheimer's and dementia, conditions that can strip away memories and cognitive abilities. Despite these challenges, I have learned that every individual, regardless of their cognitive state, deserves to be heard and understood. Through patience and compassionate listening, I aim to provide a sense of dignity and comfort to those grappling with memory loss. Furthermore, I have witnessed the profound impact of empathy on the spouses of these residents. The emotional toll of seeing a loved one slowly succumb to a debilitating disease is immense. Recognizing the importance of empathy in supporting not only the residents but also their families, I have endeavored to create a compassionate and understanding environment. This experience has fueled my commitment to utilizing my unique talents and skills to contribute to building a more empathetic and understanding global community. My aspiration to become a nurse aligns with my belief in the power of empathy. As I contemplate specializing in oncology, operating room (OR), or obstetrics and gynecology (OBGYN), I am drawn to fields where empathy and listening are of paramount importance. Cancer patients undergoing treatment, individuals in the high-stakes environment of the operating room, and expectant mothers navigating the complexities of pregnancy – all these scenarios demand not only medical expertise but also a deep understanding of the emotional and psychological aspects of healthcare. In my future role as a nurse, NP, or PA, I envision using my unique talents and skills to bridge the gap between medical expertise and compassionate care. Beyond administering treatments and procedures, I aim to create a space where patients feel heard, valued, and supported. By actively listening to their concerns, fears, and hopes, I hope to contribute to a healthcare landscape that is not only medically proficient but also emotionally attuned. Ultimately, my goal is to bring empathy into the forefront of healthcare, fostering a global community where individuals facing health challenges are met with understanding and compassion. Through my journey from a caregiver in a memory care facility to a future healthcare professional, I am committed to being a catalyst for positive change in the way we approach patient care, building a more empathetic and compassionate world one interaction at a time.

This variety of specializations within nursing offers not only a breadth of knowledge but also the opportunity to explore and find my niche in the vast realm of healthcare. The prospect of having numerous options and the ability to switch between different specialties is both exciting and reassuring, especially considering the rapidly evolving landscape of medicine. Reflecting on my life, I realized that health issues have been a constant presence in my immediate circle. My best friend grapples with recurring heart problems, and another friend, at the tender age of 25, is recovering from a stroke. These personal experiences exposed me to the intricacies of healthcare, making me witness the dedication and compassion of nurses firsthand. Their actions seemed almost magical, transforming a clinical environment into a place of hope and healing. Motivated by the desire to make a positive impact on people's lives during vulnerable moments, I envision myself as a beacon of hope for those facing health challenges. My financial situation, shaped by growing up in a low-income single-parent household, has significantly influenced my educational journey. The constant struggle for financial stability has been a driving force in my decision-making, pushing me to work since the age of 13. Pursuing higher education has always been a dream, but the awareness of its exorbitant costs made it imperative for me to be strategic and pragmatic in my choices. After high school, the uncertainty of my career path led me to explore various jobs. The need to be financially responsible and independent was paramount, as I couldn't rely on my significantly older, retired father for financial assistance. Despite earning my Associate's degree, I still found myself working multiple jobs, recognizing the importance of hard work in achieving my goals. The revelation of my passion for healthcare guided me towards nursing school, with aspirations of becoming a Physician Assistant (PA) in the future. Currently enrolled in an accelerated nursing program, the rigorous curriculum of 16 credits per semester necessitates me to work two days a week on weekends. While there are moments of exhaustion, the understanding that this hard work is crucial for affording the necessary expenses, such as commuting costs, keeps me committed. Considering the financial constraints, a scholarship would be transformative in helping me achieve my dream. Reducing the burden of financial responsibilities would provide me with the opportunity to focus more on my studies, ensuring a deeper understanding of the material and better academic performance. It would alleviate the need for me to work two days a week, allowing for more time and energy to be invested in my education. Achieving my dream of becoming a PA would not only fulfill a personal goal but also have a positive ripple effect on society. With a shortage of healthcare professionals globally, my contribution as a PA would address this critical need. I would be equipped to provide quality healthcare, make a positive impact on patients' lives, and contribute to improving the overall well-being of communities. In the future, my hope is to pay forward the support I received by providing scholarships to other aspiring students. Understanding the transformative power of financial aid, I aspire to enable others to pursue their dreams without the burden of financial constraints. By investing in education, I aim to empower individuals to overcome challenges, break the cycle of limited opportunities, and contribute meaningfully to society. In conclusion, my financial situation has been a defining factor in my educational journey, and a scholarship would be instrumental in helping me achieve my dream of becoming a PA. This dream, once realized, holds the potential to positively impact society by addressing the shortage of healthcare professionals. Additionally, my desire to support others through scholarships reflects my commitment to paying forward the opportunities that have shaped my own path.

Balancing work and school has been a challenging yet rewarding journey that has significantly impacted both my personal and professional growth. Coming from a low-income, single-parent household, financial constraints have always been a constant in my life. The desire to pursue higher education, despite the monetary challenges, has been a driving force for me. Currently enrolled in a nursing program with aspirations of graduating in the next 1-2 years, my educational journey has been a testament to resilience and determination. After completing high school, uncertainty clouded my career path. However, the reality of expensive education forced me to be pragmatic about my choices. The decision to work while attending school was a natural one, given my circumstances. I've been part of the workforce since the age of 13, driven by the philosophy that no one else will pave the way for my financial stability. With an older, retired father, I understood the need to be self-reliant. Grateful for what my father has already done for me, I knew that the responsibility of funding my education rested on my shoulders. Navigating through various jobs after earning my Associate's degree, I found myself working multiple jobs simultaneously. It was during this period of diverse employment experiences that I discovered my passion for healthcare. The decision to pursue nursing school was made with the ultimate goal of becoming a Physician Assistant (PA) in the future. Enrolled in an accelerated nursing program with a demanding course load of 16 credits per semester, I continued to work two days a week on weekends. The constant internal debate about whether to reduce my work hours to alleviate the exhaustion is ever-present. However, the practical need to commute 2-3 times a week, each trip taking an hour, compelled me to maintain my current work schedule. While the long work and school weeks leave me physically and mentally drained by Sunday, the sense of fulfillment and purpose makes it worthwhile. The financial challenges have become an integral part of my journey, teaching me valuable life lessons about hard work, perseverance, and self-reliance. At times, the longing for the luxury of not needing to work and receiving financial support from my parents arises. However, my steadfast belief that hard work is the key to achieving one's goals keeps me focused. This attitude is not just a means to an end; it is a guiding principle that will see me through the challenges of completing my nursing program and eventually pursuing a PA program. The pursuit of these degrees requires an abundance of hard work, sweat, and tears – sacrifices that I am willing to make to secure a better future. In conclusion, the delicate balance between work and school has shaped me into a resilient and determined individual. The lessons learned through this experience will undoubtedly contribute to my success in completing both my nursing and PA programs, proving that hard work is not just a means to an end but a philosophy that fosters personal and professional growth.

In the past year, my perspective on supporting the LGBTQIA+ community underwent a profound transformation, catalyzed by my relationship with my boyfriend, a trans man. While I had always considered myself an ally, it was through personal experience that I gained a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by the transgender community and found a renewed commitment to future activism. I first met my boyfriend through a mutual friend, and while I had heard his name mentioned before, it wasn't until our initial meeting that I truly connected with the person behind the name. Aware of his trans identity, I had refrained from broaching the subject, recognizing the sensitivity around personal matters. However, when he discovered that I knew he was trans, he confided in me about the initial hesitation he had in pursuing our relationship. He had feared that others might be interested in him solely because of his trans identity, reducing him to a novelty or a "rare item." The revelation deeply affected me, realizing the potential harm caused by well-intentioned actions. Being in a relationship with a trans man exposed me to the intricacies of his daily life, concerns that I, as a cisgender female, had never considered. From the financial challenges of obtaining approval for a $400 hormone medication to the geographical limitations imposed by fear of violence in certain states, I witnessed firsthand the additional burdens placed on trans individuals. This newfound awareness opened my eyes to the pressing need for systemic change and increased advocacy for LGBTQIA+ rights. As I progress through nursing school with the goal of graduating within the next 1-2 years and aspiring to become a Physician Assistant (PA), my future plans for activism have taken a clear direction. Inspired by my boyfriend's experiences, I am driven to become a healthcare provider who can offer sensitive and comprehensive care to individuals like him. I am determined to challenge the stereotypes and biases that trans individuals often face within the healthcare system. My boyfriend's encounters with healthcare providers treating him as an experiment rather than a person with unique healthcare needs highlighted the urgent need for education and awareness within the medical community. I aim to bridge this gap by becoming a healthcare professional who sees and respects the individuality of each patient, irrespective of their gender identity or sexual orientation. Looking forward, I envision a future where advancements in medicine and technology align with a broader societal acceptance of LGBTQIA+ rights. I hope to contribute to this evolution by providing not just competent but compassionate care to individuals within the LGBTQIA+ community. My journey with my boyfriend has not only deepened my personal commitment to advocacy but has also fueled my professional aspirations to actively contribute to a more inclusive and understanding healthcare landscape for everyone.

Growing up in proximity to a Reservation, I had firsthand exposure to the impact of the foster care system on Native individuals. The narratives varied among those I knew—some expressed genuine affection for their foster families, while others eagerly anticipated turning 18 to sever ties with their foster homes. Witnessing the unfortunate situation where Native individuals who cherished their foster families couldn't be adopted due to cultural background constraints was disheartening. Some longed for full adoption and true integration into their foster families. Motivated by these observations, I decided to volunteer at an Emergency foster care facility in the Pacific Northwest. This commitment spanned three years until my academic obligations limited my availability. The facility catered to children entering the foster care system, offering support during the critical first 72 hours of their arrival. This initial period is often marked by confusion and uncertainty as authorities seek temporary or long-term placements for the children. Working the night shift from 7 pm to 7 am, I played a crucial role in creating a sense of normalcy and joy for these vulnerable children. While most kids would be asleep when I left, early risers provided an opportunity for shared breakfasts. Children arrived at the facility at all hours, often accompanied by police escorts—a poignant reminder of the challenges they faced. I encountered children ranging from mere months old to middle schoolers, each with a unique set of needs and experiences. The organization's mission was to make the brief stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. I witnessed the heartbreaking reality of children covered in bruises, infested with lice, struggling with irregular sleep patterns, and displaying developmental delays. Some children exhibited a frantic urgency around food, a stark contrast to my own upbringing where my father worked diligently to ensure our table was never empty. I realized the privilege of having a caring and nurturing environment, contrasting sharply with the harsh realities faced by these children. The three years of volunteering profoundly impacted my perspective. It highlighted the importance of kindness, understanding, and the basic necessities that many take for granted. As I transition into the medical field, currently pursuing nursing school, I carry with me the lessons learned from this experience. My goal is not only to excel in my career but also to be vigilant in identifying signs of abuse, listening to the voices of vulnerable children, and actively intervening to provide the support and care they deserve. This journey has fueled my passion for making a difference in the lives of those who, like the children at the foster care facility, may have faced adversity. Through my future role in healthcare, I aspire to be an advocate for those who need it most, ensuring that every child receives the care, attention, and compassion necessary to overcome their challenges and build a brighter future.

Growing up in a low-income, single-parent household, my childhood was shaped by the resilience and hard work of my father. He toiled tirelessly to provide for our family, often being away for long hours to ensure there was food on the table. Despite the financial challenges, my father emphasized the importance of education, consistently urging me to pursue a college degree. After high school, faced with the decision of what to study, I opted for the practical route and enrolled in community college. The uncertainty about my academic path made the experience challenging, but I remained focused on completing my Associate of Arts (AA) degree. However, even after earning my AA, I found myself in a state of indecision regarding my future. I embarked on a journey of odd jobs, hoping that inspiration would strike and guide me toward a fulfilling career. Despite numerous breaks and attempts at different potential majors—ranging from communications to surgical tech and ESL—I struggled to find my true calling. It was during one of my stints at a Starbucks drive-thru that I encountered a stranger who would unknowingly alter the course of my life. A lady, a seasoned surgical tech with a decade of experience, shared her unexpected decision to attend Physician Assistant (PA) school. Life, she noted, had a way of surprising us. Intrigued by my desire to pursue a medical field without a specific focus, she suggested nursing as a versatile and rewarding option. Her advice resonated with me, and I decided to take the leap into nursing school. While our encounter at the drive-thru was brief, her impact was profound. I dove into the world of nursing with a newfound sense of purpose and direction. Currently navigating the challenges of nursing school, my sights are set on graduation within the next year. As I progress through my nursing education, I've identified areas that spark my passion—Oncology, OBGYN, and Operating Room (OR) nursing. These specialties align with my goal of making a meaningful impact on patients' lives. Looking ahead, my aspirations extend beyond nursing, aiming to eventually become a Physician Assistant (PA). The journey is demanding, juggling a hectic schedule of classes and weekend work, but the pursuit of my dreams propels me forward. The lady at the Starbucks drive-thru, whose name I never learned, inadvertently became a catalyst for my career path. I often wonder about her progress in PA school, grateful for the unexpected guidance she provided. In my pursuit of nursing and future endeavors, I am fueled by the desire to overcome challenges, make a difference in healthcare, and ultimately fulfill the dreams that have evolved through personal experiences and chance encounters.

My journey is one shaped by the challenges of a single-parent home and financial constraints, yet fueled by a deep determination to pursue higher education. Growing up, my father's relentless work schedule, driven by the sole purpose of putting food on the table, defined my childhood. The absence of my mother, who vanished from my life during elementary school, left an emotional void that echoed through my formative years. Despite the hardships, I was instilled with the importance of education in breaking the cycle of financial limitations. With a desire to make wise choices, I embarked on my academic journey at a community college, steadily earning my Associate's degree. The path has been one of self-discovery, and I now find myself more certain of my aspirations and the impact I want to make in the world. My father, though unable to contribute financially to my education, has been a pillar of moral support. His sacrifices and dedication provided me with the foundation for a childhood that, despite financial constraints, aimed to offer the best possible experiences. It is with gratitude that I acknowledge the intangible support he provided, nurturing my ambitions and resilience. The backdrop of my life is painted with encounters with hospitals, as the people around me grapple with health issues. These experiences have become more than just routine visits; they have transformed into moments of inspiration. The healthcare professionals I encountered during those visits became my role models, igniting a passion within me to be a source of comfort and aid during individuals' most challenging times. Currently enrolled in nursing school, I am pursuing my dream of making a meaningful difference in people's lives during their times of need. The journey, however, is not without its financial burdens. Working two days a week alongside an accelerated nursing program, I had to take out a loan to cover my school fees. The dedication required to balance work and academics is demanding, but it is a sacrifice I willingly make to achieve my goals. Fortunately, the Osage Nation, my tribe, supports me by providing funds for basic necessities like food and gas for my one-hour commute to school. Despite this assistance, the financial strain persists. This is where a scholarship, like the one I am applying for, becomes a crucial lifeline. It would alleviate the burden of worrying about basic living expenses, allowing me to focus more wholeheartedly on my studies and clinical experiences. This scholarship represents more than just financial assistance; it symbolizes an investment in someone striving to overcome adversities and contribute meaningfully to society. With this support, I can concentrate on my education, honing my skills to become a compassionate and skilled healthcare professional. The impact of this scholarship extends beyond my immediate needs, shaping the trajectory of my career and, ultimately, enabling me to serve others with the same dedication and compassion I witnessed in the healthcare professionals who inspired my journey.

In the intricate journey of pursuing my educational goals, the most steadfast support has come from an unexpected yet invaluable source—my best friend. Raised in a single-parent home, my father, who is older than most parents of my peers, worked tirelessly to provide for our family. Despite his dedication, his demanding work hours left him often absent during my childhood. The absence of my mother, who returned to Japan after my parents' divorce when I was eight, further compounded the challenges I faced. While my father expressed support for my education, his demanding schedule meant that he remained somewhat distant from my academic endeavors. The absence of my mother, who initially sent packages and letters but eventually ceased all communication, left a significant void in my life. The lack of maternal presence during crucial years impacted me deeply, and I felt a profound sense of loss. However, amid these challenges, my best friend emerged as a beacon of unwavering support. She became my ultimate advocate for education, consistently encouraging me to pursue my goals, interests, and educational opportunities. Despite being 26 and on the verge of obtaining my BA in nursing, my friend reassured me that it's never too late to invest in my education. Her encouragement went beyond mere words; she actively engaged in my academic journey. She played a pivotal role in identifying educational opportunities, tirelessly searching for scholarships, and providing assistance with the application process. Her dedication extended to academic support, as she willingly assisted me with challenging math homework when needed. In moments of self-doubt or when the academic road seemed daunting, she was there, offering guidance and uplifting words that fueled my determination. Beyond the realm of education, my friend has consistently been a pillar of support in all facets of life. She embodies the role of a mentor, continuously cheering me on and serving as a source of inspiration. Her unwavering belief in my capabilities has instilled confidence in me during moments of uncertainty. In essence, she is not just a supporter of my education but a genuine role model in life. As I approach the culmination of my nursing degree, I reflect on the profound impact my best friend has had on my educational journey. Her encouragement and support have been instrumental in overcoming obstacles and pushing me to strive for higher goals. Her belief in my potential has been a driving force, reminding me that the pursuit of education is a timeless endeavor. With her by my side, I not only gain academic achievements but also the strength to face life's challenges with resilience and determination.

Living with mental health challenges is an ongoing battle that has deeply impacted my life since the age of 14. Diagnosed with depression, I found myself navigating the complexities of adolescence and mental health in a small town in the Pacific Northwest, where I was among the few individuals of color. Raised in a single-income parent home, with my father rarely present due to work commitments, I grappled with identity issues that intensified my struggle with self-discovery. Growing up as one of the few Asian kids in my elementary school exacerbated the challenges of forging an identity in a predominantly white community. The sense of being different and standing out fueled internal conflicts, contributing to the weight of my mental health struggles. The environment I was in made it difficult to find a sense of belonging, and the isolation I felt deepened my battle with depression. To cope with the overwhelming emotional burden, I turned to antidepressants and anxiety medication. While these medications provided a lifeline, it often felt like they merely kept me afloat, barely above the waters of despair. The constant effort to maintain stability became exhausting, and I found myself grappling with thoughts of suicide. At the age of 17, my struggles reached a critical point, leading to hospitalization for my own safety. The journey from adolescence to adulthood has been marked by persistent mental health challenges. Turning 21 was a poignant moment, as the celebration was overshadowed by a profound sense of sadness— a reflection of the ongoing battle I faced within myself. Despite the hardships, I am now 26 and gradually finding my way in the world. It's a slow process, and I often feel that I'm lagging behind my peers in various aspects of life. However, amid the struggles, there is a glimmer of hope. I am determined to pursue my educational goals, aspiring to become a nurse and eventually a Physician Assistant specializing in oncology. The desire to work in oncology is rooted in my own experiences, as I aim to help individuals facing challenges similar to those I encountered in the past. The journey to reaching my goals is fraught with obstacles, but the commitment to making a difference in the lives of others propels me forward. The path to mental well-being is ongoing, and while the journey is arduous, the hope for a fulfilling future keeps me resilient. Each day is a step toward healing, self-discovery, and making a meaningful impact in the field of healthcare, particularly in the realm of oncology where I can empathize with the struggles of the mind and be a source of support for those in need.

Breast health education holds profound significance for me, interwoven with my aspirations to become a nurse and a Physician Assistant (PA) specializing in oncology. This importance is not only rooted in my professional goals but also stems from my firsthand experiences working at a memory care facility, where I have witnessed the impact of cancer on individuals, particularly breast cancer, and its enduring implications on their lives. Currently employed at a memory care facility, my interactions with residents span a spectrum of health challenges, including dementia and Alzheimer's. However, a notable portion of female residents, approximately half, has faced the harrowing journey of mastectomy. Even after years of being cancer-free, they grapple with the necessity for regular check-ups and treatments to ensure their continued well-being. This stark reality emphasizes the long-lasting effects of breast cancer and the ongoing vigilance required for those who have undergone mastectomy. In the course of my work, I have encountered residents who, despite their older age, resist seeking treatment for various reasons. Some believe that, given their advanced age, undergoing further treatment may not be worth the challenges it poses. This reluctance highlights a complex intersection of age-related concerns and the fear associated with grappling with cancer once again. The narratives I've witnessed in my work are diverse, ranging from the celebration of milestones in being cancer-free to the heartbreaking decline of a resident who, fatigued by the relentless battle against breast cancer, chose to relinquish the fight. This particular resident's journey was a poignant illustration of the ravaging effects of breast cancer, with metastasis infiltrating her spine and eventually reaching her brain. The decline from cognitive alertness to a hallucinating, vegetative state underscored the gravity of the disease and the imperative need for comprehensive support throughout the entire cancer trajectory. Breast cancer, with its physical and emotional toll, is a formidable adversary that alters lives irreversibly. The fear of recurrence lingers, casting a perpetual shadow over survivors. It is this profound impact and the complex, multifaceted challenges faced by individuals dealing with breast cancer that motivates my commitment to breast health education. My overarching goal of becoming an oncology nurse and a PA specializing in oncology is grounded in a desire to stand alongside individuals during the most arduous and challenging phase of their lives. Cancer treatments are not merely physical; they are emotionally and mentally draining. I aspire to provide a compassionate presence, offering the emotional and mental support that is often as crucial as the medical interventions. My experiences at the memory care facility have illuminated the gaps in emotional support that individuals facing breast cancer may encounter, particularly when lacking familial or social support. As I embark on my journey towards becoming a healthcare professional, my mission is to bridge these gaps, offering solace, understanding, and encouragement to those navigating the intricate terrain of cancer treatment. Breast health education, therefore, is not just a professional obligation for me; it is a personal commitment to empower individuals with knowledge, resilience, and a sense of agency in their battle against breast cancer. By fostering awareness, advocating for regular screenings, and imparting information on the importance of continued follow-ups, I hope to contribute to a community where individuals facing breast cancer feel supported, informed, and equipped to navigate the challenges ahead. In conclusion, breast health education is a cause that resonates deeply with me, driven by the stories and experiences of resilience witnessed in my work. It is a cornerstone of my commitment to oncology nursing and PA practice, serving as a guiding force in my endeavor to provide holistic support to individuals confronting the complexities of breast cancer. This scholarship would not only bolster my academic and professional journey but also enhance my capacity to contribute meaningfully to the field of oncology, advocating for comprehensive breast health education and compassionate patient care.

Mental and physical wellness are paramount aspects of my life, given the persistent battles with depression and anxiety that have marked my journey. Establishing and adhering to a routine that prioritizes both mental and physical health has become indispensable to my well-being. The gym serves as a sanctuary where I can channel and release the emotions that often accompany mental health challenges. Engaging in physical activity not only provides a tangible outlet for pent-up emotions but also offers a sense of accomplishment. The feeling of sweat and the burn in my limbs during a workout contribute to a profound connection with my body, fostering a positive and empowering mindset. Spending time outdoors is another cornerstone of my wellness routine. Whether it's the thrill of snowboarding, the tranquility of walks, or the immersive experience of backpacking, nature offers a therapeutic escape. The open air becomes a canvas for self-reflection, providing a space where I can detach from the stressors of daily life and gain perspective. Even moments of quiet contemplation by the water serve as a remedy, offering solace compared to the confines of my room. However, the demands of being a full-time nursing student in an accelerated program introduce challenges to maintaining optimal mental and physical health. The rigors of academic pursuits can lead to neglecting self-care, and at times, my living environment reflects this neglect. A cluttered room becomes a tangible manifestation of the stress and chaos that can accompany the academic journey. Recognizing the importance of a clean and organized space, I am continually working to prioritize this aspect of my well-being. Additionally, amidst the demanding schedule, allocating time to connect with friends becomes a crucial component of maintaining balance. The camaraderie and shared moments of joy with friends serve as a respite from the intensity of academic responsibilities. Even a weekly pause for social interactions offers a well-deserved break, fostering a sense of normalcy and fun amid the academic demands. As a student navigating the complexities of an accelerated nursing program, the challenge lies not only in meeting academic expectations but also in finding the time and energy for self-care. Balancing the pursuit of knowledge with the need for mental and physical well-being requires intentional effort. This scholarship would play a pivotal role in alleviating some of the financial pressures associated with being a student, affording me the opportunity to prioritize self-care without compromising on academic responsibilities. In conclusion, mental and physical wellness stand at the core of my existence, and the challenges of being a student further emphasize the importance of a holistic approach to health. Embracing routines that incorporate physical activity, outdoor engagement, and social connections is essential in navigating the demands of academia while nurturing my well-being. This scholarship would not only ease financial burdens but also contribute to creating an environment where I can continue to prioritize my mental and physical health on the journey to academic success.

At the age of 26, I find myself at a pivotal moment where clarity regarding my education and career goals has finally emerged. While higher education has always been a goal, pinpointing the specific path was a challenge. However, recent reflections have solidified my aspiration to become a Physician Assistant (PA). Currently, my immediate goal is to complete nursing school, with a choice between specializing as an Operating Room (OR) nurse or entering the field of oncology. Growing up in a single-parent household, financial constraints were a constant companion. Pursuing higher education while navigating these economic challenges has been an arduous yet transformative experience. Despite the hurdles, I am committed to achieving my long-term objective of becoming a PA. Presently enrolled as a full-time nursing student, I grapple with the demands of both academic rigor and financial limitations. Juggling coursework and employment is a delicate balance, as I can only allocate two days a week to work. The scholarship in question holds significant promise in alleviating some of the financial pressures associated with my educational journey. One of the key challenges I face is the necessity to work while attending nursing school. The scholarship, if awarded, would be instrumental in lessening this burden. A reduction in work hours would afford me the luxury of focusing more intensely on my studies. This increased focus is crucial not only for my academic success but also for the development of the skills and knowledge necessary for a successful career in nursing. Commute adds another layer of complexity to my student life. With a one-hour travel time to school, transportation costs, particularly gas money, constitute a considerable portion of my expenses. The scholarship would play a pivotal role in easing the financial strain associated with commuting, enabling me to allocate these funds towards educational materials or other essential needs. Beyond the immediate relief from financial stress, the scholarship holds profound implications for my overall educational and career trajectory. It serves as a catalyst for realizing my dream of completing nursing school and embarking on the journey towards becoming a healthcare professional. The kindness of one person can have a profound and lasting impact on our lives, shaping our perspectives and influencing the way we think. In my case, the kindness of a group of backpackers, particularly Brian, during a challenging moment on the Wonderland Trail around Mt. Rainier, has left an indelible mark on my life. Embarking on a solo backpacking adventure along the 93-mile Wonderland Trail was a personal goal, driven by a desire to test my physical limits and experience the unique beauty that can only be found through extensive hiking. The journey started smoothly, with a beautiful day and the excitement of exploring the trails around the iconic Mt. Rainier. However, the second day brought unexpected challenges. The North side of the mountain was unexpectedly covered in snow, obscuring the trails and causing me to lose my way. Panic set in as the daylight began to fade, and I realized I was in need of assistance. Desperation led me to a chance encounter with a group of three experienced backpackers from Colorado. Their casual yet reassuring remark, "ain't this snow a bitch," marked the beginning of a transformative experience. I approached them, urgently asking for guidance and the possibility to join their group temporarily until reaching the next campsite. Without hesitation, they welcomed me into their circle, an act of kindness that would alter my perception of strangers and the impact a shared journey can have. Among the trio, Brian, the eldest at 38 and an engineer by profession, stood out. His passion for the outdoors was contagious, and his love for backpacking reflected a deep connection with nature. Brian became more than just a fellow traveler; he emerged as a mentor and role model during those shared days on the trail. Brian's generosity extended beyond the physical challenges of backpacking. He freely shared food, offered valuable insights from his backpacking experiences, and ignited my curiosity by recommending numerous books and sharing tales of his travels across the United States. His enthusiasm for learning and exploring was palpable, leaving a lasting impression on me. In the aftermath of that backpacking trip, the kindness of those three strangers, especially Brian, has continued to resonate in my thoughts. Brian, in particular, has become a beacon of positivity and education in my mind. His example inspires me to embrace the world with open arms, to be generous with my knowledge and experiences, and to approach life's challenges with resilience and enthusiasm. As I reflect on that pivotal moment, I can't help but aspire to be like Brian when I reach his age – someone who continues to explore, learn, and lend a helping hand to fellow adventurers. The impact of their kindness has not only shaped my perspective on backpacking but has also influenced how I approach new connections and opportunities in life.

Growing up in a single-parent household has been a defining aspect of my life, shaping not only my character but also influencing my career goals and aspirations. Raised by a hardworking father who dedicated his life to providing for my brother and me, the challenges of limited financial resources and the absence of my father due to his demanding work schedule have played a crucial role in shaping my journey. My admiration for my dad is profound. Despite the financial constraints, he continued to work tirelessly until the age of 70, driven by a sense of responsibility and determination to secure a better future for our family. His work ethic and resilience have become guiding principles in my own life, instilling in me the belief that hard work is transformative and can pave the way for a brighter future. My father's diverse career journey has been a source of inspiration and reassurance. From working on tug boats and being a fisherman to transitioning into a professional chef and later becoming a casino dealer, his story reflects the idea that one's career path is not confined to a single trajectory. Despite feeling behind compared to peers who were already graduating, my father's words served as a reminder that it's okay not to have a linear career progression. This realization provided me with the freedom to explore my interests and discover my passion at my own pace. Currently working towards my goal of becoming a nurse and eventually pursuing a career as a Physician Assistant (PA), my experiences in a single-parent household have fueled my determination to succeed. The lessons learned from my father's example have been instrumental in shaping my work ethic and commitment to my education. The struggles and sacrifices witnessed at home have given me a deep appreciation for the value of hard work, resilience, and the pursuit of a meaningful career. Looking ahead, my aspirations extend beyond personal achievement. Inspired by my own background, I am driven to make a positive impact on others facing similar challenges. I aspire to aid individuals in the future through scholarships, particularly those who come from backgrounds like mine—where parents are working tirelessly to provide the best for their children despite limited financial means. The goal of becoming a nurse and eventually a PA is not just a personal ambition but a commitment to contribute meaningfully to society. I envision myself using my experiences and knowledge to support others, especially those with financial constraints, in their pursuit of education and career goals. The journey of self-discovery led me through a myriad of jobs and volunteer opportunities, ultimately shaping my commitment to community involvement. Amidst this exploration, a particular volunteer experience ignited a lasting passion for making a positive impact in my community. Volunteering at a foster care emergency facility, known as a safe house, became not just a temporary commitment but a sustained effort to influence change. The inspiration to get involved in my community emerged from a period of uncertainty about my career path. In my quest to find purpose, I engaged in various jobs and volunteer opportunities, seeking a meaningful connection with the community. It was during this exploration that I stumbled upon the safe house, a sanctuary for children in the critical first 72 hours after entering the foster care system. The significance of the safe house lies in the profound impact it has during a period of immense stress for both the children and social workers. The initial 72 hours are crucial as decisions about the child's placement and duration in the foster care system are made. The safe house provides a haven where children can temporarily escape the chaos of uncertainty, allowing them to be carefree kids without the burden of constant relocations. Volunteering at the safe house became a deeply fulfilling experience, prompting me to continue my involvement over an extended period. The diversity of children walking through those doors highlighted the range of challenges and backgrounds they brought with them. Whether it was during night shifts, putting kids to bed, or receiving children escorted by police at 2 am, every interaction reinforced the vital role of the safe house in providing stability during tumultuous times. My commitment to community involvement and influencing change was not only driven by empathy but also by a stark awareness of the privileges I had despite growing up in a low-income, single-parent home. Witnessing the struggles and uncertainties faced by the children entering the safe house served as a poignant reminder of the relative stability and support I had experienced in my own childhood. The impact on the community was two-fold. Firstly, the safe house played a critical role in alleviating the stress for both children and social workers during those initial 72 hours. It provided a tangible space where children could momentarily escape the complexities of foster care decisions and just be kids. Secondly, my sustained involvement in this initiative, offering support during vulnerable moments, contributed to the broader goal of fostering positive change within the community. The experience at the safe house crystallized my understanding of the transformative power of community service. It motivated me to be a part of initiatives that create positive change and offer support to those who need it most. Moving forward, my commitment to community involvement is fueled by the belief that collective efforts, no matter how small, can contribute to creating a more compassionate and resilient community. My journey to discover my passion led me through various jobs and volunteer opportunities, and amidst these experiences, I found profound fulfillment in contributing to my community through servitude. One impactful volunteer commitment that resonated with me was at a foster care emergency facility known as a safe house. During a period of uncertainty about my career path, I stumbled upon this opportunity that would leave a lasting imprint on my heart. The safe house served as a sanctuary for children in the crucial first 72 hours after being taken into foster care. This timeframe is often the most stressful for social workers as they work to determine the child's placement and duration in the foster care system. The safe house provided a space where children could temporarily escape the turmoil of uncertainty and simply be kids without the weight of constant transitions. Volunteering at the safe house, I encountered a diverse array of children, each with their unique stories and challenges. One of the aspects that made this experience particularly impactful was the flexibility it offered. Whether it was putting kids to bed during night shifts or receiving children escorted by police at 2 am, I was part of a team dedicated to creating a supportive and nurturing environment during these critical hours. Despite growing up in a low-income, single-parent household, my perspective shifted as I witnessed the struggles and uncertainties faced by the children entering our care. Seeing them come in with police escorts or arriving in the middle of the night highlighted the urgency and vulnerability of their situations. These experiences provided me with a stark contrast to my own childhood, making me acutely aware of the privileges and stability I had despite my modest upbringing. The impact on my community was tangible, as the safe house played a crucial role in offering respite to children during a tumultuous period in their lives. By creating a space where they could momentarily escape the stresses of foster care placement decisions, the safe house aimed to provide a sense of normalcy and comfort. My role in this initiative, no matter how small, was an integral part of a collective effort to make a positive impact on the lives of these children. Volunteering at the safe house not only enriched my understanding of the foster care system but also deepened my appreciation for the stability and support I had received growing up. It reinforced my belief in the transformative power of community service and inspired me to continue seeking opportunities to contribute meaningfully to the well-being of others. This experience has left an indelible mark on my commitment to servitude, reminding me of the profound impact that collective efforts can have on the lives of those in need.

Growing up with just my dad and my brother, financial constraints were a constant reality, shaping my understanding of the value of hard work, resourcefulness, and the importance of perseverance. Money was a limited resource in our household, and we learned to make the most out of what we had. Sacrifices were a common theme, but my father instilled in me the belief that hard work is the key to unlocking opportunities. In the face of adversity, he emphasized the importance of maintaining a strong work ethic without succumbing to complaints. This early lesson laid the foundation for my approach to challenges – to confront them head-on with determination and a positive mindset. Growing up in a bilingual household, where my mother hails from Japan, Japanese became my first language. This linguistic duality has added a unique layer to my identity, influencing not only my communication skills but also shaping my approach to learning and overcoming challenges. As I stand on the brink of completing my nursing degree, I reflect on the journey that brought me here and envision a future where bilingualism continues to be both a challenge and a powerful asset. Being dyslexic in a bilingual environment presented its own set of challenges. Dyslexia, coupled with the nuances of two distinct languages, required additional effort in refining my reading and writing skills. However, rather than viewing it as an obstacle, I have embraced it as a catalyst for personal growth and resilience. My commitment to overcoming these challenges is reflected in my proactive use of resources provided by my academic institution, such as the writing center, which has proven instrumental in enhancing my language proficiency. Looking ahead to my post-graduation plans, I find myself on the cusp of a significant milestone – completing my nursing degree. The path has been demanding, but the prospect of contributing to healthcare, particularly in oncology or operating room (OR) nursing, fuels my determination. While the specific route within nursing is still undecided, my long-term career goal is crystal clear – becoming a Physician Assistant (PA). This aspiration is anchored in a lifelong commitment to higher education and personal development. As I navigate this five-year plan, the bilingualism instilled in me from an early age emerges as both a challenge and a benefit. The challenge lies in the inherent complexity of maintaining proficiency in two languages. Dyslexia adds an additional layer, requiring meticulous attention to reading and writing in both English and Japanese. Yet, the benefits of bilingualism are profound. Bilingualism enriches communication skills, fostering the ability to connect with a broader range of individuals. In healthcare, effective communication is paramount, and being bilingual equips me with a valuable tool to bridge cultural and linguistic gaps. This skill is particularly advantageous in providing patient-centered care, where understanding and respecting diverse backgrounds contribute to a holistic healthcare experience. Moreover, being bilingual opens doors to a broader cultural understanding. It allows me to appreciate diverse perspectives, cultivate empathy, and engage meaningfully with individuals from varied linguistic backgrounds. In the context of healthcare, this cultural competence is invaluable, facilitating a more inclusive and compassionate approach to patient care. As I step into the next phase of my academic and professional journey, the challenges of bilingualism and dyslexia become stepping stones for growth. The benefits of navigating multiple languages extend beyond personal enrichment, positioning me as a more versatile and empathetic healthcare professional. My five-year plan is not just a roadmap for academic and career milestones; it is a commitment to embracing challenges, leveraging strengths, and continuing the pursuit of excellence in healthcare, fueled by the power of bilingualism and a passion for making a positive impact in the lives of others.

Travel, beyond its surface allure of scenic landscapes and exotic cuisines, possesses a transformative power that shapes individuals in profound ways. At the age of 26, I reflect on the privilege of having explored diverse corners of the world, and the impact of these journeys on my perspectives, cultural understanding, and personal development. One significant facet of my travel experience is rooted in my family's dual cultural background – a blend of Japanese and American influences. The exposure to two distinct cultures has enriched my understanding of diversity, fostering a unique sense of identity that seamlessly integrates aspects of both worlds. This duality has molded me into a person with a nuanced appreciation for different customs, traditions, and ways of thinking. Traveling extensively across Asia has not only broadened my geographical horizons but has also exposed me to a kaleidoscope of cultures, each with its own history, language, and mythology. These experiences have transcended the boundaries of tourism, delving into immersive encounters with locals and their day-to-day lives. Conversations with people from varied backgrounds have offered me a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of humanity, despite our diverse cultural tapestries. One transformative aspect of travel is the exposure to different perspectives. Engaging with people whose life stories diverge significantly from one's own fosters empathy and a broader outlook on the world. Learning to appreciate alternate viewpoints challenges preconceived notions, fostering personal growth by expanding the capacity for understanding and tolerance. This newfound perspective becomes a valuable asset, enhancing communication skills and promoting a sense of global citizenship. Cultural immersion goes beyond mere observation; it involves active participation in local customs and traditions. Whether it's partaking in traditional ceremonies, trying regional delicacies, or learning the nuances of a foreign language, these experiences become a catalyst for personal development. Stepping out of one's comfort zone fosters adaptability, resilience, and a heightened sense of self-awareness. Moreover, travel offers the opportunity for introspection and self-discovery. Removed from familiar surroundings, individuals often find themselves more open to self-reflection. The juxtaposition of different environments, coupled with exposure to varied ways of life, prompts individuals to question their own values, beliefs, and priorities. This self-examination can lead to personal growth, as individuals reassess their goals, ambitions, and the kind of life they aspire to lead. The diverse array of cuisines encountered during travels contributes to the transformative nature of the experience. Trying new dishes becomes a metaphor for openness to new experiences and a willingness to embrace the unknown. Food becomes a gateway to cultural understanding, connecting individuals to the history, traditions, and flavors of a particular region. In essence, travel serves as a catalyst for personal growth and development. The exposure to different cultures, perspectives, and environments shapes individuals into more empathetic, adaptable, and open-minded beings. The transformative power of travel lies not only in the beauty of new landscapes but in the richness of human connections and the continuous journey towards self-discovery. As I reflect on my own travel experiences, I am grateful for the profound impact they have had on shaping the person I am today – someone who values diversity, cherishes cultural exchange, and continues to seek growth through exploration.

The tarot card that resonates most deeply with me is the Death card. While its ominous name might evoke fear or apprehension, I find a profound and transformative symbolism in this card that aligns with the cyclical nature of life. In moments of confusion, trauma, or stagnation, I often turn to tarot for guidance. The Death card has consistently emerged during these critical junctures, making it a significant and poignant presence in my tarot readings. What draws me to this card is not a morbid fascination but rather the rich symbolism it carries. The Death card, in my interpretation, signifies the end or transformation of a significant aspect of life. Whether it's a relationship, a job, or an internal facet of oneself, the card suggests that something is concluding or undergoing a profound change. This resonates deeply with the essence of life – a continuous cycle of beginnings, endings, and rebirths. The imagery of the Death card often depicts a skeleton, a symbol of mortality, riding a white horse, which is emblematic of purity and spiritual elevation. In its wake, the card leaves a landscape of change, transformation, and new beginnings. This visual narrative encapsulates the essence of the card's meaning – an acknowledgment that with every ending comes the potential for renewal and growth. Facing change is inherently challenging. The inevitability of transformations, especially when they are unexpected or unwanted, can be daunting. The Death card serves as a reminder that, much like the changing seasons, life is marked by cycles of transition. It encourages acceptance and resilience in the face of inevitable change, even when it feels like a figurative death of something familiar. Moreover, the card emphasizes the importance of mourning during periods of change. Grieving, even for the smallest of losses, is a natural part of the human experience. Not all transitions are welcomed, and the Death card acknowledges the emotional weight that comes with farewells. It prompts introspection and allows space for the acknowledgment of emotions tied to the process of letting go. In essence, my affinity for the Death card lies in its capacity to convey a nuanced perspective on change. It invites me to embrace the inevitability of transformation and recognize that, even in the face of uncertainty, there is an inherent beauty in the cycle of life. Currently enrolled in nursing school with aspirations to progress into a Physician Assistant (PA) program, I am in the early stages of realizing my goal. This path was not a straight trajectory; rather, it emerged from a period of exploration, diverse jobs, and the influential encounter with a seasoned professional. The turning point in my career trajectory occurred when I crossed paths with a lady leaving for PA school. A former surgical tech with a decade of experience, she inspired me to consider nursing as a stepping stone toward my ultimate goal of becoming a PA. From a young age, my life has been interwoven with the fabric of health challenges. Hospitals and medical facilities have become familiar environments as I supported family members and close friends through various health issues. The pervasive presence of illness, surgeries, and the vulnerability of loved ones compelled me to delve into the world of medicine. This journey has fueled my passion for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), as I recognized the immense impact these fields have on healthcare and improving the lives of individuals. In the hospital corridors, I assumed the role of a caregiver, ensuring the comfort and well-being of those undergoing medical treatments. I am a dedicated individual currently navigating the demanding path of an accelerated nursing program. This scholarship opportunity represents more than just financial assistance for me; it embodies the potential to alleviate a significant portion of the financial burden that accompanies my pursuit of a nursing degree. As a student in an accelerated nursing program, my days are filled with a rigorous academic load and hands-on clinical experiences. The nature of this program demands an intense commitment, leaving limited time for employment. While I work diligently to support myself financially, the constraints of the program make it challenging to generate a substantial income. This scholarship, if awarded, would serve as a much-needed financial reprieve. The financial strain of the nursing program extends beyond tuition fees. It permeates every aspect of my student life, from daily commuting expenses to the cost of essential supplies, textbooks, and even basic necessities like food. Additionally, being responsible for my student loans adds another layer of financial complexity to my situation. Despite my efforts to balance work and studies, the financial challenges persist, often creating additional stress and distractions from my academic focus. This scholarship would act as a crucial pillar of support, enabling me to focus more wholeheartedly on my studies. The relief it provides would translate into reduced stress and increased concentration on the academic and clinical aspects of my nursing program. The impact extends beyond the financial realm; it resonates in my ability to fully engage with the learning process, ensuring that I am equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to excel in my future career as a nurse. Beyond tuition and academic supplies, the scholarship would significantly contribute to covering my daily expenses, especially the costs associated with commuting to and from my nursing program. Gas expenses, often overlooked, can accumulate quickly and become a substantial financial burden. This scholarship would offer tangible support in this area, ensuring that I can attend classes and clinicals without the constant worry of stretching my budget to cover transportation costs. Moreover, the scholarship would provide a crucial lifeline for addressing basic needs such as food. A nutritious diet is essential for maintaining physical and mental well-being, both of which are vital for success in a demanding nursing program. Through education, outreach programs, and potentially volunteering in underserved areas, I hope to make healthcare more equitable and inclusive. Ultimately, my career aspirations in nursing and as a future physician assistant revolve around a commitment to service, empathy, and continual learning. I aim to be an advocate for those in need, striving to improve healthcare outcomes and make a meaningful impact on individuals and communities alike.

Nausicaa Valley of the Wind by Miyazaki Hayao. That is the movie that I would choose to watch for the rest of my life. Being a first generation kid of a Japanese couple who chose to move to America, we only watched Japanese movies in my home. Miyazaki Hayois is the brilliant mind that created Nausicaa Valley of the Wind. A majority of his films he has a strong female lead that fiercely fights for her beliefs and what she stands for. Ever since I was a young girl this movie had always had me in a trance. A make believe world that is recovering from the destruction of humankind. Nausicaa, is a young female character that is passionate about nature and its creatures, gentle and kind to those around her and fiercely fights for what she believes in regardless of the obstacles. Nausica was everything I wanted to be when I was 5 years old to right now at the age of 26. Her spirit and love was what made me so in love with her as a character. Miyazaki has a way of capturing everything I wanted to be as a person in his characters. Just like Nausicaa I run towards my dreams and goals like fight for my dreams. I want to engross everyone with kindness even if it is not returned. Because everyone has a story and a long journey. Some people just need kindness in this harsh world sometimes. The animation style Studio Ghibli has is honestly legendary, winning countless awards all of his movies are known as classics in Japan. His art takes you to a place far away from the world that we live in today. In Nausicaa of the Wind he introduces monstrous creatures and scenarios that I would never have thought of. Which is another reason why this movie encapsulates me. A dream of mine is to be able to have a look inside Miyazaki's head. I want to see what he goes through creating such beautiful vivacious movies. If only I could walk through his mind, im sure he has countless other movie ideas he must have that were never ale to make it to the big screen, Miyazaki spends years on each of his films. Along with his beautiful movies he has amazing music that accompanies each of his films. The music is classic in my ears, as if I ever hear the music anywhere I know exactly what movie the music is from. The music pairs each scene in Nausicaa Valley of the Wind so well. And in the most moving, emotional scenes you feel the music cry along with the scene. It is music that I listen to during my vast hours of studying that I do. Music that calms me. These are the reasons why I would choose Nausicaa Valley of the Wind as a movie that I would watch for the rest of my life.

My reason for pursuing nursing may be a little untraditional. I've contemplated for a long time what I should pursue. I had an idea of wanting to go into the medical field. But the medical field is so vast making it more confusing. I partially pursued many different careers like ESL, communications, surgical tech. I even finished my MEPS to join the Coast Guard. But none of those careers made me excited or elated, making me decide to stop pursuing them. I was working at the Starbucks drive thru when I met this lady who told me she was leaving for Oregon to attend PA school. She had been a Surgical tech for the past 15 years, but was ready for a change. Never imagining that she would eventually attend PA school. I expressed my confusion over what I should pursue, and she was actually the one that voiced that I should become a nurse. Nursing itself is such a large field of different specialities. That was the last time I ever saw that lady. Shortly after I realized I had the majority of the prerequisites needed for nursing school. I applied and got into Pacific Lutheran University, where I am today. I still think about that lady, and how she mentioned how weird life is. I hope she's doing well in her PA program. I think another reason why I ran towards her suggestion of nursing was because I am close friends that have a laundry list of health problems. I've visited many of my friends in hospitals, in patient and outpatient facilities and have helped with their care in times of needs like after surgeries. My boyfriend is a trans man and I've participated in his recovery through top and bottom surgery. Taking care of him and seeing all the meds, the healthcare staff doing their work and watching the recovery of his body is always wild to think about and is amazing. Being surrounded by all of this was the reason why when I was recommended to become a nurse, it felt like a lightbulb went off. And I'm the type of person where if I have a goal, I run towards it with my whole heart. And that is the reason why I decided to pursue nursing. I want to become one of those nurses, who I've watched take care of my friends and loved ones.
