Growing up with your children is one of the hardest and most rewarding paths to be traveling down. I was 19 when I became pregnant the first time, this quickly ended my dreams of moving to the City of Chicago and the pursuit of an Art degree. However, it was the best fork in the road as I discovered more in depth of who I really am, how I want to contribute to society and what would soon be a long road of personal growth and development. I wanted to be a nurse!
Now, I'm 39 years old. My path was bumpy, windy and and still has plenty of "forks in the road", but I'm still going because I am raising two young men. My oldest is now 19 years old, he is the that grew up with me, he is the one that saw me struggle, fall down, but always pick myself back up. I never gave up on me, for him. This one now is in his freshman year of college and working 2 part time jobs. This one is the one that understands what it means to work for what you get, treat everyone with kindness, be a man of your word, be always willing to help. I get the joys of watching him make different and better decisions at the "forks in the roads".
My little man is 5 years old. I finally went back to college to pursue my Nursing career and enrolled in my ADN program. Three months in to my program I became pregnant. I quite literally grew him while I was in nursing school, and finished the last 6 months of my program with him in my lap. Covid was my silver lining as we were able to transition to online program weeks after I delivered him.
I am excited to start the journey for my Bachelors with continuing in to my Master's program this fall when my little one starts Kindergarten. To have us all under the same roof and all in pursuit of higher education is a blessing, but also a challenge. As a single mom, I still have to work full time to support all of us, and pay for two college programs. I pray I am blessed with scholarships for myself and my son in pursuit of a better life.
Thank you for the consideration.

My journey towards a career in the health professions has been a gradual but unwavering process, fueled by a deep-seated desire to make a tangible difference in the lives of others. Growing up in Bristow, Virginia, I witnessed firsthand the impact of healthcare on my community. My grandmother, a pillar of strength and resilience, battled a chronic illness for years. Watching her navigate the complexities of the healthcare system, I was struck by the profound impact that compassionate and skilled medical professionals had on her well-being. This experience ignited a spark within me, a yearning to contribute to the field that had provided such solace and support to my family.
My whole life I had a passion for ART, I naturally love to make things more beautiful or flow better. However, I always found myself in situations where I would witness a car accident or someone having a medical emergency, I felt it in me to jump in and help. Having empathy is a blessing and a curse. What quickly changed my mind was after delivering my first child I had just an awful nurse who showed me no empathy or care. At that moment I was charged with a new mission, to provide empathetic care to as many people in the community as I possibly could.
To achieve my goal of competing the BSN program, I have a clear and well-defined plan. I am currently applying for my third year of my undergraduate program, diligently pursuing my coursework and maintaining a strong academic record. I am currently working full time as a Nurse Manager in a local urgent care, with the goal of returning to volunteering on am ambulance with our community 911 system. These experiences will provide me with hands-on exposure to the realities of patient care, allowing me to refine my skills and develop a deeper understanding of the profession. Upon graduation, I plan to pursue my Masters in Nursing Science and embark on furthering my nursing career.
My pursuit of a BSN degree is not merely a means to an end but a lifelong commitment to serving others. I envision myself continuing to work in my community, providing compassionate and evidence-based care to patients from all walks of life. I aspire to be a role model for aspiring nurses, demonstrating the power of empathy, dedication, and a genuine desire to make a difference in the lives of those entrusted to my care.

I have had the pleasure of delivering a baby by myself when I volunteered in my community on am ambulance for 911. It is hands down the most rewarding medical experience I have had in the last 15 years in medicine.

A specialty with pediatric focused can be challenging, however as a mother I have empathy for both the patients and their family members, some times the parents just need to feel you have their child's quality of life at the forefront of your care. I love being able to help the kids discover that even when it can be scary, we are there to help them.
