My name is Queani Johnson, I am a senior honor student at Franklinton High School in Franklinton, North Carolina. I will be attending VCU in the Fall of 2023 to pursue my interests in African American /Africana Studies and Pre-Med while cultivating me into a competitive candidate for postgraduate education as an aspiring Physician. In addition to my outside life, I love volunteering in various community service initiatives. It has always been a love for me since I been in middle school. Nevertheless, I really could benefit from receiving as many scholarships as it will help me tremendously of my financial hardship being an out-of-state student. I have a full dream to change the world in so many ways, in medicine and in my African American society. So any scholarship money that will help towards my aspirations would mean the world to me.

However, for many Black individuals such as myself, the journey can be even more challenging due to systemic racism, lack of representation and discrimination within the medical field. Despite these hard obstacles, many Black doctors have persevered and made significant contributions to the field of medicine. As a result, they have become a source of inspiration for future generations of doctors, including myself and others. One way that these amazing Black doctors have influenced me so much is through their representation in the medical field and their community. Seeing doctors who look like me, who have overcome similar obstacles, and who have made a significant impact in the field of medicine has been incredibly inspiring and amazing to see the beauty of color. It has shown me through being a mentee to several physicians, that despite the challenges, it is possible to make a difference in the health and well-being of Black people and achieve success as a Black doctor. A beautiful young woman who was born from a lotus, her heart was pure and golden. It became incredibly broken by many trials and tribulations. As the lotus burst open, like a firework explosion, this young woman finally found her self-worth. Her inner beast awoke as she rose freely into an enlightenment of resurrection and rebirth. I am the young woman who prevailed through these challenges despite feeling as though everything was falling apart during my 11th-grade year. Imagine losing a lifelong friendship but also that person relentlessly bullying you and creating an unsafe, hostile environment in which you are being ridiculed and looked down upon by many others. I never imagined particularly my “best friend,” could or would destroy my character and crumple my self-worth where I wanted to disappear from the world. Regardless of how much I tried fighting, I felt helpless as I cried and faded into darkness – I hoped that I would escape the constant belittling, unhappiness, and self-hatred. After the continued bullying and difficult surroundings, I thought I found refuge in a boy. He was going to rescue me, bring me to safety, and protect me. Sadly, this boy ended up being the biggest bully of all. His manipulative and controlling behavior far exceeded the destruction I had experienced previously. I lost even more self-respect and often felt locked in a cage. At the time, I thought I had no one else other than him – I could not see beyond the cage due to being blinded by love and fear. I thought I would have no one if it were not for him. Despite the buildup of these immense challenges and subsequent suffering in self-esteem and grades, I had an epiphany and a new grasp on reality flooded my mind as I began to blossom as a lotus flower. As months went by seeing my self-worth, goals, and dreams fade away, I realized I had to take responsibility for myself to make a real change to be happy once again. I reminded myself of all the hard work I accomplished and what previously sparked joy in my life. I had to figure out what was most important to me – this was my eternal happiness, self-respect, and faith. To represent myself in the greater community where I also possess the same intellectual abilities as my counterparts. Lastly, I am passionate to learn, experience new things, believe I can make a change, and grow along the way, one step at a time. Knowing this, I have dedicated my time to advance my academic standing and actively involving myself in my community. I hold a strong desire to reach my full potential, enhance my abilities, and utilize the resources presented to me. Attending VCU in the Fall of 2023, it will allow me to obtain a secure position in which I am able to provide aid to others. My education will be utilized to the fullest, and I will study rigorously so that I can provide services to relieve and remove the root of healthcare disparities in our black community. I do my best to take care of patients, to respect and demonstrate personal, moral, and academic excellence. For a while now, I have been very interested in the field of Medicine since Elementary School. My love for the field of Medicine has grown over the years as I have been involved in things like UNC Nash Summer Medical Academy, Wake AHEC Virtual Medical School Summer Program, VolunTeen at UNC Rex Hospital in the Operating Room /Heart Cath Lab, UNC Community Initiatives Volunteer, UNC Black Alliance ERG Volunteer, and mentee to several African American physicians. Furthermore, I have been very avid in various fields of Medicine, such as Family Medicine, Neonatologist, and Obstetrician/Gynecologist. These specialties piqued my interest because they all deal with helping people with having children, starting families, and female/children’s health. While I have a strong interest in these areas, I look forward to learning about other fields of Medicine as well. I also share an overt love for Africana Studies, as I have been extremely interested in African American history. I love learning the beauty of my people and what made us “Us” – all the trials and tribulations African Americans have been through and how some rose and took a stand against it to change the society of black people in all. Considering this, I believe it would be great for people of my color to be seen more in the Medical field. Lots of African American people could feel more comfortable when having an African American medical provider, as they could relate more and see eye to eye. I emphasize that it is extremely challenging for people of my color to get into the field of Medicine because of the competition faced by us African Americans in this white America. Knowing the fact that I am an African American Black Woman, I recognize that it may also be a struggle for me to get into this field. However, I am here for the challenge because Medicine has been a passion of mine for many years now. Although there may be many obstacles I will be faced with, I truly stand by not giving up. I say that I also strive to do better than what my parents were able to do. As the only girl, I want to be the first physician in the family while making myself and my family proud. Attending VCU Fall 2023 to pursue my interests in African American and Africana Studies and Pre-Med while cultivating me into a competitive candidate for postgraduate education as an aspiring Physician .I have a strong desire to make some type of impact in the Medical World in OUR African American Communities. There was a beautiful young woman who was born from a lotus. Her heart was pure and golden, but it became incredibly broken by many trials and tribulations. As the lotus burst open, like a firework explosion, this young woman finally found her self-worth. Her inner beast awoke as she rose freely into an enlightenment of resurrection and rebirth. I am the young woman who prevailed through these challenges despite feeling as though everything was falling apart in my 11th-grade year. Imagine not only losing a lifelong friendship but also having that person relentlessly bully you and create an unsafe, hostile environment in which you are being ridiculed and looked down upon by many others. I never imagined that one person, particularly my “best friend,” could or would destroy my character and crumple my self-worth to the point where I wanted to disappear from the world. Regardless of how much I tried fighting, I felt helpless as I cried and faded into darkness – I hoped that I would escape the constant belittling, unhappiness, and self-hatred. After battling the continued bullying and difficult surroundings, I thought I found refuge in a boy. He was going to rescue me, bring me to safety, and protect me from my best friend turned bully. Sadly, this boy ended up being the biggest bully of all. His manipulative and controlling behavior far exceeded the destruction I had experienced previously. I lost even more self-respect and often felt like I was locked in a cage. At the time, I thought I had no one else other than him – I could not see beyond the cage due to being blinded by love and fear. I thought I would have absolutely no one if it were not for him. Despite the buildup of these immense challenges and subsequent suffering in self-esteem and grades, I had an epiphany and a new grasp on reality flooded my mind as I began to blossom as a lotus flower. As months went by seeing my self-worth, goals, and dreams fade away, I realized I had to take responsibility for myself to make a real change and to be happy once again. I reminded myself of all the hard work I had accomplished until that point and what previously sparked joy in my life. I had to figure out what was most important to me – this was my eternal happiness, self-respect, and faith. I am now more determined than ever to always stand up for myself and what is important to me while never again giving in to anyone having that much power over me. Through navigating these difficult times, I eventually came to the realization that certain things happen for a reason. In fact, these unfortunate circumstances made me stronger and wiser. Overcoming these obstacles in an already challenging 11th-grade year allowed me to develop resilience while teaching me well-being strategies, developing a growth mindset, and the importance of maintaining one’s personal identity. The healing process was not easy, but I eventually gained the strength to let go of anything that was stopping me from being “Queani.” I returned to being my true self – a beautiful and radiant blooming lotus of strength. “Never ever let anyone take away your peace of mind no matter what.”- Queani Johnson

African American Culture Festival: Assisted with set-up, breakdown of the event, and other tasks as assigned. Provided a warm, friendly welcome to all visitors as the public face of UNC Rex, passed out informative brochures, answered any questions, and encouraged people to get involved in the events/activities. Alice Aycock POE Center: Watered all flower and vegetable beds, added fertilizer/soil as needed, picked and disposed of weeds, raked area as needed, cleaned up litter, and assisted with harvesting/cleaning/bagging produce as required. OUT Festival: Assisted with set-up, breakdown of the event, and other tasks as assigned. Provided a warm, friendly welcome to all visitors as the public face of UNC Rex, passed out informative brochures, answered any questions, and encouraged people to get involved to get well checks, health awareness, and seeking primary care.
