During my life, I have faced adversity in different forms, but one of the most significant challenges I have experienced is navigating stereotypes and expectations placed on me as a young African American man in America. In many situations, I have felt judged before I even had the opportunity to speak—whether it was based on my appearance, tattoos, hairstyle, or the way I dressed. At times, I have been seen through labels and assumptions such as being a “thug,” rather than being recognized for my character, goals, and potential. I have experienced this both in school and in society, and it has challenged the way I move through the world. Instead of allowing these stereotypes to define me, I chose to define myself. I overcame this by staying grounded in my faith and knowing who I am in God and whose I am. My relationship with God has given me confidence, identity, and purpose beyond any label society may place on me. It has taught me that my value is not determined by perception, but by my character, discipline, and actions. Another important part of overcoming these challenges has been building something of my own. I am the founder of Payroll Apparel, a clothing brand that represents ambition, discipline, and the mindset of earning everything you achieve. Creating my brand allowed me to express my identity in a positive way while turning my experiences into motivation. It taught me leadership, responsibility, and the importance of turning adversity into purpose. Through these experiences, I have learned that stereotypes can either limit you or strengthen you depending on how you respond. I chose to use them as fuel to grow mentally, spiritually, and personally. I learned the importance of self-confidence, consistency, and staying focused on my goals regardless of how others may perceive me. I want to attend a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) because I believe it will provide me with a strong sense of culture, identity, and community. Attending Texas Southern University will allow me to be surrounded by individuals who understand shared experiences and are striving for excellence. I value the environment HBCUs create—one that encourages leadership, pride, and achievement among Black students. I also believe an HBCU will help me grow academically and professionally by providing mentorship, networking opportunities, and a supportive environment that pushes students to succeed. As I pursue a degree in Kinesiology with a concentration in Sports Management and a minor in Real Estate Finance, I know this environment will help me develop the knowledge, confidence, and connections needed to succeed in my future career. Ultimately, my goal is to break barriers, defy expectations, and create opportunities not only for myself but for others who come after me. I am committed to using my education, faith, and experiences to build a legacy that reflects purpose, resilience, and success.
