During my time in high school I have been extremely involved in many groups and institutions within both my school and my community. Not only just in High school but since I was very young as well I have always been a very involved person. From the age of 3 years old up until my Junior year of high school I was apart of a Girl Scout Troop within my community Troop number 101794 where in this group we did a plethora of things to give back to our communities from soup kitchens, clothing drives, Volunteering to help feed the hungry, helping at different grassroots facilities and much more. Today as I High school senior I am the President Of Active Minds which is a mental health group where our mission is to provide resources and education to increase mental health awareness while also advocating for the mental health of students, and reducing stigma of mental illnesses. Active Minds is a club that truly spoke to me because I am a person who has struggled with mental health issues and is actively dealing with them to this day. My freshman year of high school I lost my grandmother which broke me for a long time, I was already struggling with mental health because coming out of quarantine and beginning high school the transition was extremely hard for me to get back comfortable with being around so many people after being secluded away for all of quarantine. Entering as a normal happy, healthy girl and leaving a teenage girl with social anxiety and heavy depression. And I struggled with this battle for quite some time. Once I got to my Sophomore year of high school and began really involving myself in extracurricular activities this is where my mental health started to improve. My Junior year is when I found out about Active Minds and I immediately knew this would be an amazing environment for me to grow and thrive in. Now as a Senior I am proud to say I am the president of this group where my own personal goal is to make our club become the safe space for other students like it was for me, a place that is dedicated to spreading awareness and helping people of our community by hosing canned food drives, spreading awareness about mental health, supporting Trick or Trunk which is for children in our community to have a safe place to celebrate Halloween and enjoy candy, healthy snacks with games and entertainment. In addition to Active Minds, I am also the social media coordinator for my schools African Student association, a member of the National Art Honor Society, participant as a Varsity Cheerleader for my forth year at my school, being a forth year choir student joining Chamber Choir in only my second year of high school and being apart of The Howard County GT choir during my Junior year, a member of the red cross club where our current mission is doing a toy drive to donate Toys to children in need as well as hosting blood drives as well. Overall although my high school experience started off more than rocky one thing I will always be grateful for is all the extracurricular I joined giving me so many outlets for new friendships, connections, ways to give back and general sources of happiness and a sense of calm within my life. I would not change my high school experience for the world, looking back I began truly enjoying school once I found communities within my own that created welcoming environments.
