Wieland Nurse Appreciation Scholarship
I decided to pursue a career in nursing because I believe in being present when people need help the most. Whether it's easing someone's pain, advocating for patient care, or helping families understand difficult medical decisions, nursing allows me to show up for people in a hands-on, meaningful way. The science behind the human body fascinates me, but more than that, I’ve always been drawn to the human connection that nursing demands. Nurses don’t just perform tasks—they listen, lead, teach, comfort, and care. That combination of clinical skill and compassion is what inspires me most.
My journey toward nursing started with the time I spent caring for people and animals. For over three years, I’ve worked as an Animal Care Assistant at a pet care company. Though it may seem unrelated, this role taught me consistency, empathy, and how to respond calmly in stressful situations. I saw how every patient—human or not—deserves respect, attention, and quality care. That experience planted the seed of caregiving in me.
Later, I took a Nurse Aide course and earned my certification. It was one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences I’ve had. Stepping into clinical environments, assisting real patients, and learning about vital signs and daily care routines gave me a deeper appreciation for the emotional and physical demands nurses face every day. It also confirmed for me that this is the path I want to follow. I don’t just want to observe—I want to be part of the solution.
My inspiration also comes from personal experiences with healthcare. I’ve witnessed how disparities in access, language, and understanding can negatively affect outcomes, especially in overlooked communities. I want to be the kind of nurse who breaks through those barriers—someone who patients can trust and connect with, someone who listens first, and acts with both knowledge and kindness. That’s what health care should be.
I also currently serve as Co-Lead Youth Health Advisor for the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services and as President of the Wake County Youth Health Council. These roles have helped me see how policy, education, and clinical care all intersect. I’ve had the opportunity to lead conversations about youth mental health, community health literacy, and access to care. This work has strengthened my desire to combine advocacy with hands-on nursing care, especially in under-resourced communities.
Nursing, to me, is about being a light during some of life’s hardest moments. It’s about showing up for people who are vulnerable, scared, or uncertain—and making them feel seen and supported. I believe I’m called to do that work, and I’m fully committed to the path ahead.
I found out about this scholarship through my school counselor.
KC MedBridge Scholarship
If selected, I would use the scholarship funds to support my academic journey as I pursue a degree in biology with a concentration in chemistry. I will be attending college this fall and plan to use the funds toward tuition, lab materials, textbooks, and course-related expenses. As someone on the pre-med track, science courses often require additional supplies and fees that add up quickly. This scholarship would help ensure I have the tools I need to succeed without placing added financial stress on my family.
The support would also allow me to stay fully committed to my leadership and service work, especially my roles with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services(Co-Lead) and the Wake County Youth Health Council (President). With less financial pressure, I’d be able to focus more on meaningful experiences that align with my long-term goal of becoming a pediatrician and making a difference in underserved communities.
Your investment in my education would go far beyond the classroom—it would help me stay on track to create a real, lasting impact.
