I understood then that a broken grid is a missing dosage, a child waiting for a system that cannot retrieve his name. I am building Dumsor AI, systems to predict outages and keep hospitals alive when grids fail. I taught myself Python. Now I am learning to code decentralized infrastructure. As a Computational Neurosurgeon, I will deploy AI guided surgical tools that function when the power does not. I chose Howard because technology is a tool for liberation. I want to master energy resilient firmware and predictive load balancing, testing my systems in real clinics. I earned A1s in every STEM subject, wrote over two hundred physics drills, founded a platform training five hundred students, and taught myself Python with no formal instruction. I carry the problem. Those sketches became the seed of Dumsor AI, the machine learning system I am now building to predict power outages and keep hospitals operational when grids fail. At Howard, I will develop this platform using real Ghanaian energy data, and long term, I am training to become a Computational Neurosurgeon who returns to the same ward not just as an engineer who builds the tools but as a physician who wields them.
The causes I support are energy justice and healthcare equity, because I have seen what happens when neither exists. At that hospital, a blackout nearly cost a child his life. That same fragility exists in clinics across the developing world. When the grid fails, it is not an inconvenience. It is a missing dosage. It is a surgeon operating by torchlight. I volunteer because I refuse to accept that the difference between life and death should be a voltage stabilizer. I founded Voice of NSMQ, a peer-led platform that trained over five hundred freshmen at Prempeh College, because I believe access to knowledge is another form of infrastructure, and when it fails, entire futures collapse.
My father is my hero. He never finished secondary school. He sells goods in Suame, Kumasi. Shortly before my Howard admission, he was in a car accident. He survived, but now when a driver brakes too fast, his whole body remembers the crash before his mind can tell him he is safe. But the thing I am proudest of is what I built after.
I founded Voice of NSMQ. It started as a small study circle and became a peer-led platform training over five hundred freshmen for squad selection. I personally taught Physics while managing a team of tutors. Most of those students were first-generation. No tutors at home. No older siblings had done this before. No one to explain what the NSMQ even was, let alone how to prepare for it. I became the person I had needed when I started.
That is how I plan to inspire other first-generation students. Not with speeches. With structures. At Howard University, I will study Computer Science and build Dumsor AI, a machine learning system to predict power outages and keep hospitals alive when grids fail. But outside the classroom, I will do what I did at Prempeh. I will find the students who think college was not built for them. I will show them my father's face and tell them that if a man who hawked used shoes in Accra's markets can send his son to Howard, then no door is permanently closed.
I want first-generation students to see me and understand that the system is not a fixed wall. It is a set of doors. Some are locked. Some require keys you do not have yet. But every door can be opened if you find the right person to show you where the key is hidden. I found my key in a quiz room with old boys of Prempeh College who watched me drill physics for two years and decided I was worth the risk. I want to become that old boy for someone else.
When I graduate from Howard and build Dumsor AI across West Africa, I will point back to Suame. To Prempeh College. To Voice of NSMQ. To the five hundred students who just needed someone to believe they belonged in the room. First-generation students do not lack talent. They lack maps. I plan to spend my life drawing them.
