The most common question asked to high school students is “what do you want to do with your life?” A lot of the time students find that hard to answer, but then there are some students who know exactly what they want. For me, It was pretty hard to answer this question because I had no clue what I wanted to do in life and my career choices kept changing. I would go from wanting to be a therapist, to a lawyer, then a crime scene cleaner, and a private investigator. But now I know that I want to be a criminologist.
Sure, being a criminologist wasn’t always my first choice in a career path and sometimes I have even doubted my decision, but it’s the amount of times I came back to it and the more I learned about it that made me stick with it. Even so, it is possible that I will change my career path again and again as I continue my future in college, but the one thing I do know is that I want to do something that’ll help people and something related to law and public services.
I want to be a criminologist because it’s something that I’ve been really interested in and it’s a career that gives me an opportunity to really do something to help the people around me. Not only in my community but people around the world. It’s something that I know I can do and something that I know I would enjoy. Many people go into these careers for the money or for the popularity but that is not what I’m looking for in this. I’m looking for a way to help people live a peaceful life and to be able to feel safe in their homes and outside in the world without fearing that they are in danger. My inspiration for this career started when I entered the Law Academy in my sophomore year of highschool. At first I thought it was just another class I can get my credits from but the more time I spent in that class and with the people in it, the more I got to know and understand the careers in law and public service.
To explain some things, a criminologist is someone who studies crimes, they study how, when, and why they occur in order to prevent something similar from happening in the future. This is helpful to many people, it could help to prevent people from losing a loved one or becoming a victim of a violent crime. I’ve not heard of many people who are interested in the same career choice so if I don’t do it, who will? Of course there are many other career choices that I could have chosen to reach my goal of helping people but, this is the one that has connected to me the most and the thing that I feel I have the skills for.
In conclusion, criminology was not a career I decided I wanted to pursue in a day. It did take some time and a lot of thinking to finally say “I want to do this”, but I’m glad I could have an opportunity to learn more about it in the law academy and I’m glad to have taken my time about deciding this is what I want to do. I hope that in the future I can help many people and find more ways to prevent crimes.
