Chip Miller Memorial Scholarship
As the first in my family to attend college, my decision to pursue higher education is rooted in both personal ambition and the desire to build a better future for my family. Growing up, I saw firsthand the sacrifices my parents made to support me and my two younger brothers. One message they consistently shared stuck with me: “If you don’t want to struggle, go to school. It doesn’t have to be a four-year degree—find a trade and do it.” For me, that trade is in the automotive industry—a field I’ve grown up around, respect deeply, and am passionate about building a career in.
My career hope is to become a skilled, certified professional in the automotive field, specializing in diagnostics and advanced vehicle technology. I want to contribute to the evolving automotive industry, which is becoming increasingly complex and technology-driven. I also aim to eventually move into leadership or even open my own shop, combining my hands-on skills with entrepreneurial drive. The idea of becoming a mentor for others, especially young people in my community who may not see a path forward, is a long-term goal that keeps me motivated.
This passion stems from watching my father dedicate over 21 years of his life to the automotive industry. Without a college degree, he rose through the ranks from mechanic to leadership roles purely through hard work and perseverance. He came home exhausted but never failed to show up for our family. Seeing his journey showed me that the automotive industry offers a path to success, especially when paired with formal training and education.
In high school, I took advanced academic classes to build a solid foundation, while also enrolling in career and technical education courses like animation, graphic design, and automotive. These hands-on courses sparked my interest in how things work—especially vehicles. They helped me understand not only my capabilities, but also how many different opportunities exist within this field, from traditional repair work to emerging automotive technologies.
Since my sophomore year, I’ve held part-time jobs to gain work experience and contribute financially to my family. Currently, I’m employed at a local transmission shop where I’m learning the ins and outs of real-world automotive service. This role has strengthened my technical skills and confirmed my decision to pursue an automotive degree. Every day I work alongside professionals who have mastered the craft, and I know that with the right training, I can do the same—and more.
Pursuing higher education in the automotive field means more than getting a job. It means achieving financial stability, building a future where I don’t have to struggle as my parents did, and setting an example for my younger brothers. It also means contributing to a fast-changing industry that needs motivated, skilled workers who are ready to grow with it.
This scholarship would reduce the financial pressure on my family and allow me to focus fully on my education and training. With your support, I will be able to take this important step toward becoming a leader in the automotive field—someone who gives back, who mentors, and who keeps moving forward.
I’m deeply grateful for the opportunity to be considered. With dedication, training, and continued hard work, I am confident that I will reach my goals and make a meaningful impact in the automotive industry.
