Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
Hello, I am Abhi Polaki, a rising freshman at, Northeastern University. I am pursuing Business Administration, Management, Economics, and Business (MBA). I have experienced the struggle of mental health in my own life. I am sharing my story in the hope of being considered for the Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship. If there is one thing I have learned about mental health, it is that seeking help is often the hardest part. Mental health issues, particularly minor ones, are often overlooked, ignored, or swept under the rug. We live in a society that encourages us to put on a mask to hide our true feelings, to pretend that everything is fine when it is not. We are taught to suppress our emotions, to keep our struggles to ourselves, and to deal with our problems alone. This has been my experience, and I am sure it is the experience of many others. Throughout my high school years, I found myself wrestling with this issue. I felt the need to put on a mask around others, to hide my struggles and appear "normal". This was not because I was ashamed of my mental health issues, but because I was afraid of being judged or misunderstood. I was afraid of being labeled as "weak" or "overly sensitive". I was afraid of being a burden to others. So, I kept my struggles to myself, and I suffered in silence. It was not until much later that I realized the importance of seeking help and working on myself. I realized that it is okay not to be okay, that it is okay to express my feelings, and that it is okay to ask for help. I realized that mental health is just as important as physical health and that taking care of my mental health is not a sign of weakness, but a sign of strength. As a business student, I understand the importance of mental health in the workplace. I understand that a healthy mind is crucial for productivity, and overall well-being. I understand that mental health issues can affect anyone, regardless of their race, gender, or social status. I am committed to promoting mental health awareness in my community and beyond, and I am dedicated to breaking the stigma associated with mental health. In conclusion, my experience with mental health has greatly impacted my life. It has taught me the importance of self-care, and self-acceptance. It has taught me the value of empathy, understanding, and compassion. But mostly it has made me a stronger, more resilient person. I am somewhat grateful for this experience, as it has shaped me into the person I am today. I am applying for the Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship to continue my education and further my efforts to promote mental health awareness. I believe that with the right support and resources, we can all take off our masks and embrace our true selves. Thank you so much for considering my application.
    Minecraft Forever Fan Scholarship
One of the most magical things about Minecraft is how it brings people together in ways that few other games can match. For me, the heart and soul of Minecraft lies in its cooperative multiplayer experience. There's something truly special about teaming up with friends or even strangers to embark on epic adventures, whether it's exploring vast caverns, constructing towering castles, or battling fearsome monsters. The sense of camaraderie that develops as you work together to overcome challenges and achieve shared goals is truly unparalleled. But it's not just the in-game collaborations that make Minecraft so meaningful; it's also the way it fosters real-world connections. Whether you're playing with friends who live halfway across the globe or bonding with classmates during a lunchtime LAN party, Minecraft has a unique ability to bring people together and forge lasting friendships. I've lost count of the countless hours I've spent huddled around a computer screen with friends, laughing, strategizing, and marveling at the incredible creations we've built together. From humble dirt huts to sprawling cities, the possibilities are truly endless in Minecraft, and the memories we've created along the way are priceless. But perhaps what resonates with me most deeply about Minecraft's cooperative multiplayer experience is the way it encourages creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving skills. Whether you're building a towering skyscraper or designing an elaborate redstone contraption, there's always something new to learn and discover, and having friends by your side to share in the journey makes it all the more rewarding. In a world that often feels increasingly divided, Minecraft serves as a beacon of unity, bringing people of all ages, backgrounds, and walks of life together in a shared pursuit of adventure, creativity, and friendship. And for that reason, it will always hold a special place in my heart.
    “The Office” Obsessed! Fan Scholarship
As a fan of "The Office," it's hard not to find a character to resonate with given the diverse personalities in the show. However, if I were to choose one, it would undoubtedly be Jim Halpert. Jim's laid-back demeanor, quick wit, and penchant for harmless pranks make him a relatable and endearing character for many viewers. One of my favorite aspects of Jim's character is his ongoing series of pranks on his colleague Dwight Schrute. These pranks range from the simple (such as putting his stapler in Jell-O) to the elaborate (like creating an entire fake crime scene in Dwight's office). Despite Dwight's often serious and rigid personality, Jim's pranks serve to lighten the mood and inject a sense of humor into the otherwise mundane office environment. In my own life, Jim's approach to humor has influenced my perspective on workplace dynamics, particularly in my part-time student job at Kumon. While tutoring students in reading or math, I've discovered that incorporating humor into the learning process can help them learn better. Whether it's using amusing examples to explain a math concept or sharing a joke to break the ice, creating a lighthearted atmosphere can make learning more enjoyable for both myself and them. Additionally, Jim's pranks have inspired me to embrace humor in my interactions with coworkers. Just as Jim uses pranks to bond with his colleagues and alleviate tension in the office, I've found that humor can help foster a positive and collaborative working environment at Kumon. Whether it's joking around with coworkers during breaks or playfully teasing them, I believe that incorporating humor into the workplace can help relieve the stress that comes with long shifts. One of the ways I've implemented Jim's spirit in my job is by adding a touch of humor to everyday tasks, such as scheduling. Similar to Jim's habit of mischievously altering Dwight's belongings, I've occasionally "accidentally" misspelled coworkers' names on the schedule or added humorous drawings to lighten the mood. These playful antics not only bring a smile to my coworkers' faces but the students seemed to like it as well. Overall, "The Office" and Jim Halpert's character have shaped my sense of humor and perspective on workplace dynamics, inspiring me to embrace humor and lightheartedness in my job at Kumon. By incorporating laughter and playfulness into my interactions with students and coworkers alike, I've found that I can create a more positive and collaborative atmosphere where everyone can thrive.
Fall Favs: A Starbucks Stan Scholarship
Has there ever been a drink as iconic as the Pumpkin Spice Latte? A seasonal indulgence that has captured the hearts of many, holds a particularly important significance in my life. I'm not the only one mesmerized by the pumpkin spice latte, but what it's done for me holds a special place in my heart until the end of time. There were a lot of things wrong with my relationship at the time—primarily, I didn't pay much attention to her. I was busy with school or my student part-time job, and I was a couple of hundred miles away. I often visited her in the fall as the leaves began their graceful descent and the air turned crisp. She was as beautiful as the autumn leaves but it was easy to fall back into my back-to-school routine. After all, education was my future, so why shouldn't I take it seriously? Yet, in my pursuit of the perfect fall backpack or calculator, I forgot the most precious thing next to me was her. Slowly we became more distant and cold. Her smile, which could brighten even the saddest of days became a rarity. It took me a while to notice her falling out of love, but when I did, I was distraught. I yearned to win her back that fall, whether it was through picnics, snuggling by her fireplace, taking her to a pumpkin patch, or other autumn dates. More than anything, I wanted to see her smile again. Although it took time, I was successful. However, it wasn't just my effort that won her love back; a special drink played a role too. She had always loved pumpkin spice lattes, and getting them for her during that time seemed natural. We'd share them and enjoy each other's company, and I felt that drink brought us closer than I ever imagined. Nowadays, in my fall narratives, the drink has been in my toolbox for any fall special occasion: need refreshments for my cousin's cross country meet? Pumpkin Spice Latte. My Mom needs drinks for her coffee house? Pumpkin Spice Latte. Taking a walk with my girlfriend? Pumpkin Spice Latte. You get the idea. The Pumpkin Spice Latte has become more than just a beverage to me - it has become a symbol to bring people together. I'm eternally grateful to Pumpkin Spice Lattes. I might even be addicted, but is that really a bad thing?

Phineas and Ferb vs. High School Musical: A Time-Defying Showdown In the bustling world of "Phineas and Ferb" and the busy halls of "High School Musical," a shocking collision of creativity and music took place in a thrilling crossover episode. The story starts with Dr. Doofenshmirtz up to his usual shenanigans, cooking up a plan to cause chaos in the time-space continuum. He had planned to build an interdimensional time travel machine, and who did he want to send back in time? None other than Sharpay Evans, dying to rewrite history and ensure her stardom at East High. Meanwhile, Phineas, Ferb, and their trusty pet platypus, Perry, stumbled upon Doofenshmirtz's latest invention while enjoying their summer vacation. Realizing the danger it posed, they teamed up with Troy, Gabriella, and the Wildcats to foil Sharpay's scheme. As Doofenshmirtz and Sharpay united forces, they attempted to mess with the events of the original "High School Musical" movie, putting the friendships and dreams of Troy, Gabriella, and their crew on the line. Phineas, Ferb, Perry, Troy, and Gabriella raced against the clock to stop the villains before it was too late. With their combined smarts and determination, they embarked on a daring mission to set things right and ensure the Wildcats' big performance stayed intact. In a whirlwind of music and adventure, Phineas and Ferb's gadgets came in handy as they sought to build a device that would allow them to travel back to critical points in time and stop Doofenshmirtz and Sharpay's schemes. While the gang was focused on confronting Doofenshmirtz and Sharpay, no one noticed that the lever in Phineas and Ferb's invention went missing except for Perry. So Perry found himself on a secret mission of his own. Dodging lures and foiling Doofenshmirtz's henchmen, Perry sought to retrieve the lever stolen from Phineas and Ferb's invention. Along the way, he encountered unexpected allies, including a mysterious friendly janitor who lent a hand in his quest. As the big talent show approached, tensions mounted as the villains made one last attempt to spoil the Wildcats' performance. But thanks to quick thinking and teamwork, disaster was averted, and the show went on without a hitch. In a heartwarming finale, the Wildcats delivered a show-stopping performance, reminding everyone of the power of friendship and teamwork. As the adventure came to a close, Phineas, Ferb, Perry, and their new friends bid farewell, knowing they had saved the day and preserved the magic of "High School Musical" for future generations. In the aftermath of their victory, Phineas and Ferb decided to host a special celebration in their backyard. With Troy and Gabriella joining in, they transformed the backyard into a makeshift stage, where they jammed out together, blending the worlds of high school and backyard inventiveness. As the sun set on another day of adventure, the bonds forged between them grew stronger, proving that even the most unexpected friendships could withstand the test of time.

I’m seated alone at a small, curved desk, reading a book and circling each word with an annoying blue pen that is dug into my palm. When I’m finished with my task, I call out to my teacher but immediately hear laughter and insensitive comments about my “screechy” and “high-pitched” voice. I look down at my book and stay quiet, as my teacher tells me I missed circling a couple of words, and makes me do another page. A few days later during recess, a classmate shoved me into a tree because he didn’t understand me and thought I insulted him. With my face bloody and my head throbbing, I tell myself to shut up and hold back my tears. As the new kid, my life took an unexpected turn, leaving an indelible mark on my friendships and future goals. In elementary school, it was hard to make friends when people couldn't understand me, so I turned to another trusted form of expression: Playing Guitar. The six strings became my refuge, and the soothing melodies I crafted provided a sanctuary from the overwhelming silence. The guitar, with its power to transcend language barriers, allowed me to communicate when words failed. It became my voice, resonating with emotions I struggled to articulate verbally. Determined to rise above the adversity, I channeled my pain into musical expression. I spent countless hours honing my skills, strumming away the echoes of laughter that haunted me. Despite the initial rejection I faced from my peers, the guitar helped pave my way towards a brighter future. My turning point came when I decided to showcase my musical talent by joining a band. I was lucky to encounter like-minded individuals who recognized the beauty in my melodies rather than succumbing to the prejudice that had clouded their perception. Together, when we played, we created a musical haven where our differences harmonized into a symphony of unity. The band became more than just a creative outlet; it became my refuge where I could express myself without being rejected. Through the bonds forged in the crucible of music, I found friends who embraced me for who I was, appreciating the uniqueness I brought to the ensemble. The compassion I found throughout the band mad me stronger and I was able to escape the prejudices that had previously defined my interactions. My journey from being the new kid to a proud member of a musical brotherhood has left an indelible impact on my life. The scars of rejection have become a testament to my resilience, and the joy of creating music has eclipsed the pain of my early struggles. Music has not only been a bridge between cultures but also a catalyst for personal growth, instilling in me the confidence to pursue my dreams without hesitation. As I reflect on my transformative journey, I recognize that being the new kid, while initially a source of adversity, has shaped me into a person resilient in the face of challenges. Through the strings of my guitar, I have found harmony in the midst of dissonance, turning the painful notes of my past into a melody of triumph.

Some movies can last about an hour but memories last a lifetime. "Avengers: Infinity War" stands as the cinematic milestone that has profoundly impacted my life in more ways than I could have anticipated. Beyond the captivating plot and superhero theatrics, this Marvel masterpiece has become a catalyst for a series of transformative experiences, creating lasting bonds, unforgettable memories, and an enduring passion for storytelling. One of the movie's greatest gifts to me is its role as a gateway to the expansive Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). As I delve into the intricate web of interconnected characters and narratives, I find myself not just watching a movie but embarking on a journey that spans galaxies and dimensions. The ability to introduce my friends and family to this cinematic universe has become a source of immense joy. I've witnessed their excitement as they discover the rich tapestry of superheroes, each with their own unique strengths, flaws, and stories. The shared experience of watching "Infinity War" together has opened up conversations, created inside jokes, and solidified connections that go beyond the screen. The impact of "Infinity War" extended beyond my immediate circle of friends. Inspired by the film's spirit of overcoming impossible odds through teamwork, I decided to start a Marvel club at my school. The club has become a place for Marvel enthusiasts like myself, providing a space where we gather regularly to watch Marvel films, discuss lore, and revel in the shared passion for these iconic characters. The movie serves as an origin point for my club as without it I would have never invented the club and formed so many genuine friendships. Every club session is a testament to the enduring power of storytelling. The intricate plotlines, unexpected twists, and emotional nature Marvel films possess. The films provide ample fodder for discussion, analysis, and speculation. I make it a tradition re-watch "Infinity War" every month to cremorate the club's founding. The film's timeless nature ensures that each viewing reveals new perspectives, sparking fresh conversations among club members. It's not just about watching a movie; it's about engaging with a narrative that resonates with the human experience, fostering a sense of community and shared enthusiasm. The Marvel club has become more than just a gathering to watch movies; it's a space where I've forged connections with individuals who share my love for storytelling, creativity, and the magic of the MCU. The bonds formed during these club sessions extend beyond the club, enriching my social life and introducing me to a diverse group of friends with whom I've discovered common interests and passions. In essence, "Avengers: Infinity War" isn't just a movie for me; it's a catalyst for happiness, friendship, and personal growth. It has opened doors to a world of imagination and connection, allowing me to build a community around shared interests. The impact of this film on my life goes beyond the runtime—it's a testament to the enduring power of storytelling to shape experiences, create bonds, and leave an indelible mark on the journey of self-discovery.

I’m trembling in my comfy green seat, hands shaking, mind panicking. When I speak into the microphone at the Model UN conference, an unfamiliar raspy, robotic voice comes out. I hear people chuckle and comment about how weird my voice sounds and don’t think I could be more mortified. The laughter continues, my pulse pounds and my throat feels dry as I stutter through the finishing lines of my speech. I sit down, and the torment ends – humiliated, I swear never to speak into a microphone again. Even at a young age, instances like these conditioned me to remain silent. Whenever I spoke, it hurt. I was born at twenty-six weeks and arrived with various developmental delays. A few weeks later, I had a PDA ligation, and during the operation, my left vocal cord became paralyzed. My vocal cord paresis made my voice strained, and raspy. For years, everyday social interactions became struggles and microphones became nightmares. Struggles with my voice have been a defining part of my life’s journey. Along the way, I’ve encountered several setbacks, but over time I’ve been able to persevere and find my voice. It wasn’t easy, with countless hours of vocal therapy and speech exercises complicated by hormonal changes in my voice. My sessions involved stretching, forcing awkward movements of my larynx, and practicing articulation. The process was both tedious and painful, but I was motivated to build confidence in my voice. Over time, I began to see progress. I could speak more comfortably and not feel ashamed. No longer was I relegated to the back of classrooms, but now I was able to participate and articulate my thoughts with clarity and intention. Slowly, my confidence in my vocal abilities became intertwined with other aspects of my life. As I reflect, I’ve come to realize that I was searching for my “voice” in ways that extended beyond the physical, and one of the most important parts of that search was through my scouting experience. During my first year of scouting, I was usually quiet due to my vocal issues. As my condition improved and I grew more comfortable with my voice, however, I became confident enough to take on leadership positions. I started small, taking on the role of a Librarian, and later a Den Chief. Although challenging, these roles taught me how to support and guide scouts, which led me to become the New Scout Patrol Leader. I mentored younger scouts to help them advance, which gave me a great sense of gratification. This experience in leadership was an essential step in my path to attaining the rank of Eagle Scout. In my junior year, confidence in my voice also led me to become the Vice President of my school’s chess club. In that role, I planned numerous events, bake sales, and tournaments, and I organized a week-long chess event in preparation for our school-wide tournament. To promote the event, I had to go up on stage in front of the whole school and announce details for the tournament. Although initially reluctant, I decided to go for it. I conquered my fear, and for the first time in six years, I spoke into a microphone intentionally. Through these experiences, I’ve discovered that finding one's voice goes beyond physical limitations. Finding your voice is cultivating the courage to lead, the strength to persevere, and the empathy to connect with others. My voice may not come out clearly through my vocal cords, but its impact is shown in the hearts of those I’ve had the privilege to mentor and guide.

Macbeth 1.7.1-10 If it were done when ‘tis done, then ‘twere well It were done quickly. If th’ assassination Could trammel up the consequence, and catch With his surcease success, that but this blow Might be the be-all and the end-all - here, But here upon this bank and shoal of time, We’d jump the life to come. But in these cases We still have judgement here, that we but teach Bloody instructions, which, being taught, return To plague th’ inventor. Guilt pervades the thematic essence of the selected passage from Shakespeare's Macbeth (Act 1, Scene 7, lines 1-10), where Macbeth grapples with the impending murder of Duncan. Guilt, characterized by remorse and a sense of accountability for actions committed or contemplated, becomes a profound exploration in Macbeth's internal dialogue. His looming assassination of Duncan, instigated by the influence of his wife and the witches' prophecies promising power, diverges from his prior experiences on the battlefield, where his killings were for the defense of his kingdom and people. The complexity arises from the external forces driving him toward regicide, leaving Macbeth in a state of uncertainty and pre-emptive guilt, as the decision to murder Duncan is not entirely his own. In the opening lines, Macbeth expresses a conflicted desire for the murder to be both efficient and swiftly executed, suggesting a hesitancy and eagerness to expedite the process. The lines "If it were done when 'tis done, then 'twere well / It were done quickly" (1.7, 1-2) unveil a subtle tension within Macbeth, torn between the urgency to fulfill the deed and an underlying reluctance. This dichotomy hints at the internal struggle Macbeth grapples with as he contemplates the impending act. However, as Macbeth delves deeper into his contemplation, doubts begin to infiltrate his mind regarding the consequences of the assassination. The lines "Could trammel up the consequence, and catch / With his surcease success, that but this blow" (1.7, 3-4) reveal a growing skepticism about whether killing Duncan will indeed lead to Macbeth's ascension to the throne. The metaphorical imagery of trapping consequences and achieving success through cessation introduces a layer of uncertainty, making Macbeth question the true impact of the murderous act. The subsequent lines, "Might be the be-all and the end-all - here, / But here upon this bank and shoal of time, / We’d jump the life to come" (1.7, 4-7), unveil Macbeth's perception of the crown as a finite opportunity that he must seize promptly. The use of vivid imagery, such as "jump" and "shoal of time," conveys a sense of urgency, depicting Macbeth's view of the crown as a limited chance that compels him to act swiftly, even if it involves moral transgressions. This urgency introduces an additional layer to Macbeth's internal conflict, as he grapples with the moral implications of his actions against the perceived expediency of gaining power. The concluding lines, "We still have judgment here, that we but teach / Bloody instructions, which, being taught, return / To plague th’ inventor" (1.7, 8-9), encapsulate Macbeth's apprehensions about the consequences of murder. Here, he acknowledges the potential repercussions, introducing the idea that the act of killing may not only affect the victim but also haunt the perpetrator. The notion of "bloody instructions" implies a cyclical nature of violence, wherein the lessons taught through bloodshed may revisit and torment the one who initiated them. Throughout the passage, the repetition of words and sounds, such as "were" and "done," emphasizes Macbeth's hesitation and internal conflict. The recurrence of the letter "s" in "surcease success" (1.7, 4) echoes the potential success of the murder, underscoring the emotional turmoil Macbeth experiences as he contemplates the deed. In conclusion, guilt emerges as the central theme in Macbeth's soliloquy, showcasing his inner turmoil and moral conflict surrounding the contemplated murder of Duncan. The passage explores the complexity of Macbeth's character, torn between external influences propelling him toward regicide and an internal struggle that manifests in pre-emptive guilt. The juxtaposition of urgency and doubt, coupled with vivid imagery, creates a rich tapestry of emotions, unraveling the intricate psychological landscape of Macbeth's character.

My brother’s lemonade stand wasn’t doing very well. He was thirty dollars in debt, and I immediately wanted to help him. When analyzing the situation, I noticed that his stand's location in the dead center of our street was almost invisible to potential customers, and his pricing strategy of fifty cents per cup barely covered the costs.
