I am father of two, a medically retired US Army combat veteran, and a husband to the most amazing woman in the world. I decided to go back to school for my social work degree to work in the mental health field and to help others who have struggled with mental health issues like myself. I have been blessed with the opportunity to take part in something that is bigger than myself and to achieve a dream of having a future career that is rooted in putting good into the world. I take this opportunity seriously and have maintained a 4.0 throughout college. As I enter my senior year in the BSW program at UALR, I intend to keep that momentum going and to move immediately into the advanced standing MSW program so that I may continue my education. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Scholarship Essay: My Commitment to Social Work and Mental Health with a Focus on Reentry
As a retired combat veteran, husband, and father to two young children, my commitment to social work and mental health advocacy is deeply personal, shaped by my experiences and a passion for supporting individuals reentering society after incarceration. My journey has taught me the power of empathy, resilience, and community in overcoming challenges, and I am dedicated to helping others navigate the complex intersection of mental health and reentry to build brighter futures.
While my military service instilled in me a sense of discipline and purpose, it is my desire to serve those reintegrating into society that drives my career in social work. I understand that individuals returning from incarceration often face significant barriers—stigma, lack of resources, and untreated mental health challenges—that can hinder their ability to rebuild their lives. My goal is to address these obstacles by providing compassionate, trauma-informed support and advocating for equitable access to mental health services. I have seen how unaddressed mental health issues can perpetuate cycles of struggle, and I am committed to breaking those cycles through meaningful intervention and support.
As a husband and father, I know the importance of stability and connection in fostering mental well-being. Raising two young children has taught me the value of patience, active listening, and creating safe spaces for emotional expression. These skills translate directly to my work with reentry populations, where building trust and understanding is critical. My family inspires me to advocate for programs that not only support individuals but also strengthen families affected by incarceration, helping them rebuild relationships and create supportive environments for growth.
My commitment to social work focuses on empowering those reentering society to overcome mental health challenges and societal barriers. I am passionate about addressing systemic issues, such as limited access to mental health care or employment opportunities, that disproportionately affect this population. By pursuing advanced education in social work, I aim to develop the expertise needed to design and implement programs that provide holistic support—combining mental health care, job training, and community integration—to help individuals thrive post-incarceration.
This scholarship will enable me to further my education and deepen my impact in the field of social work, particularly in mental health and reentry. My lived experiences as a father and husband, combined with my dedication to serving others, fuel my mission to create lasting change. I am committed to using my skills and empathy to advocate for those reentering society, ensuring they have the resources and support needed to rebuild their lives with dignity and hope.
Thank you for considering my application. I am eager to continue this work, guided by a vision of equity, healing, and community for all.

My Commitment to Social Work and Mental Health with a Focus on Reentry
As a retired combat veteran, husband, and father to two young children, my commitment to social work and mental health advocacy is deeply personal, shaped by my experiences and a passion for supporting individuals reentering society after incarceration. My journey has taught me the power of empathy, resilience, and community in overcoming challenges, and I am dedicated to helping others navigate the complex intersection of mental health and reentry to build brighter futures. I myself have been fortunate enough to have the opportunity to share my experiences with others in this space and to be involved with the healing process.

I understand that individuals returning from incarceration often face significant barriers—stigma, lack of resources, and untreated mental health challenges—that can hinder their ability to rebuild their lives. I have seen how unaddressed mental health issues can perpetuate cycles of struggle, and I am committed to breaking those cycles through meaningful intervention and support.
As someone who has struggled with mental health personally, I know the importance of stability and connection in fostering mental well-being. Raising two young children has taught me the value of patience, active listening, and creating safe spaces for emotional expression. There are so many issues that our community faces today and I feel it is the duty of those who can, to be there for those in a vulnerable situation. To reach a hand to help those affected and to be there in whatever capacity we can.
These skills translate directly to my work with reentry populations, where building trust and understanding is critical. My family inspires me to advocate for programs that not only support individuals but also strengthen families affected by incarceration, helping them rebuild relationships and create supportive environments for growth.
