Navigating Challenges, Inspiring Change: My Path in Healthcare ‘Ubuntu ngumuntu ngabantu” – “I am because we are.” This African proverb has been the heartbeat of my upbringing, it is reflected through my journey from a small community in Southern Cameroon to an aspiring healthcare professional. Growing up, the importance of mutual support, service, and dedication to one another was deeply instilled into me from a young age. These values have guided me in my personal, academic, and professional career, inspiring me to care for others and uplift my community. From an early age, I possessed a sense of duty to those around me. As the eldest of three, I understood that my success is highly dependent on not just myself but how efficiently I am able to collaborate, cooperate, and relate to those around me. I took significant responsibilities within my family like helping my siblings with their assignments, assisting my parents with work related tasks like filling out applications, and staying home with my siblings while my parents were out struggling to make ends meet to provide for our family. Through these experiences, I have grown to be empathetic to the struggles of those around me, resilient when times get difficult, and reliable in times of need, qualities that drive my commitment and dedication to my community. Moving to the United States was a monumental shift in my life. It was not only a transition to a new country but also an introduction to a whole new world filled with new challenges and opportunities. Regardless of the cultural and academic obstacles I faced, I was able to persist steadfastly and stick to my goal of pursuing a career in medicine. I graduated highschool with not just my diploma but also with my Associates degree, setting an example for my younger siblings that no matter where you come from or how difficult your path may seem, your goals are always achievable. Looking at the future, my ultimate goal is to become an obstetrician-gynecologist, a specialty that allows me to not only practice medicine but also provide specialized care for women of color whose medical needs are often undermined within the healthcare field. Outside of my professional aspirations, I am committed to maintaining my community service. After college, I plan on starting a non-profit organization in the United States and back in my home country Cameroon, centered around bridging the gaps in healthcare access, education, and empowerment of underserved communities. However, achieving these goals comes with challenges, including financial obstacles. Currently, I am facing a $4,000 tuition gap that this scholarship would significantly help to address. This financial support would allow me to fully immerse myself in my studies and community-driven initiatives, bringing me closer to achieving my dream of becoming an obstetrician-gynecologist and creating impactful change in underserved communities. All in all, my journey exemplifies one of hardwork, resilience, and commitment to serving those around me. Though my resume may highlight my academic and career accomplishments, it does not capture my identity as a whole. I am unique not only because of what I have accomplished but because of the ideas, vision, and goals I have for the future. This scholarship opens doors for me to not only further my education, but to be one step closer in creating long lasting impact in the lives of those around me. “Ubuntu ngumuntu ngabantu” – I am because we are, and together we can achieve greatness.
