      Resilient Scholar Award
Growing up in a household with both a single father and a single mother, I learned early on the importance of resilience and adaptability. My parents each faced their own set of challenges, but they both worked tirelessly to provide for me and ensure I had the opportunities I needed to succeed. They taught me that life doesn't always go as planned, but it’s how you respond to those challenges that shapes who you become. Their unwavering determination and love for me instilled in me a strong sense of independence and the drive to work hard for my goals. Having a sister who was a single teen mom added another layer to my upbringing. Watching her navigate the difficult path of motherhood at such a young age gave me a unique perspective on the complexities of life. While it was hard to see her struggle, it also showed me the immense strength and courage it takes to care for another life, especially when you're still figuring things out yourself. Her experience taught me the importance of empathy and understanding. I learned that everyone faces challenges, some of which are not always visible, and it’s crucial to offer support and kindness to others, especially those who are going through tough times. One of the most impactful experiences that led to a deeper understanding of myself and others occurred when I volunteered at a local organization that supported single mothers. Through this experience, I heard many stories of resilience, sacrifice, and love. These women, like my own parents and sister, were doing their best to create a better life for their children, often juggling multiple responsibilities and facing obstacles that most people couldn’t imagine. It was eye-opening to realize how much strength it takes to overcome the challenges of being a single parent, and it deepened my appreciation for the sacrifices my family members made. I also learned that no matter how difficult life gets, there’s always room for growth and improvement, and that support from others can make a world of difference. This experience of volunteering not only helped me understand the struggles of others but also gave me a new sense of purpose. I realized that I want to continue to support others in my community, especially those who are facing challenges similar to what my family has experienced. It reinforced my desire to pursue a career in education, where I can make a positive impact on the lives of children and families. I want to create a classroom environment where every student feels valued and supported, regardless of their background or circumstances. In many ways, growing up in a single-parent household and witnessing the challenges faced by my sister and other single parents has shaped my character and worldview. It has taught me the importance of empathy, perseverance, and community. These lessons continue to guide me in everything I do, from my academic pursuits to my personal relationships. I now understand that everyone has their own struggles, and it’s through understanding and supporting each other that we can overcome them. This mindset has helped me become a more compassionate and driven individual, and I am excited to carry these lessons with me as I continue to grow and work toward my goals.

      Student Referee Scholarship
One of my favorite memories of refereeing comes from my time helping with church basketball. I had the opportunity to referee games for younger players, which was both rewarding and challenging. I remember one particular game where the players were especially enthusiastic, and the energy in the gym was contagious. Although there were some tense moments during the game, I was able to keep control of the game while ensuring that everyone had fun. The players were respectful, and the coaches were supportive, which made the experience enjoyable for everyone involved. It was fulfilling to know that I was contributing to a positive experience for the kids, helping them learn the game and enjoy the sport. Refereeing has taught me valuable life skills that have strengthened my character. First and foremost, it has helped me develop leadership and communication skills. As a referee, I was responsible for making quick decisions, enforcing the rules, and ensuring that the game ran smoothly. This required clear communication with players, coaches, and fellow referees. I learned how to assert myself confidently while remaining calm under pressure, especially when dealing with disagreements or tense moments. Refereeing also taught me the importance of fairness and objectivity. It was essential to make decisions based on the rules, not personal feelings or biases, and to ensure that every player had an equal opportunity to participate and enjoy the game. Another aspect of refereeing that has strengthened my character is the development of patience and resilience. Refereeing can be challenging, especially when dealing with passionate players, coaches, or parents. There were times when I had to make tough calls that weren’t popular, but I learned to stand by my decisions and remain professional. I also learned the importance of staying patient and composed, even when things didn’t go as planned. This experience helped me build resilience and taught me how to handle criticism constructively, which has been valuable in many areas of my life. Looking ahead, I plan to continue participating in refereeing, especially within my community. I hope to gain more experience and refine my skills by officiating at higher levels of competition. Refereeing has given me a sense of responsibility and the opportunity to give back to the sport I love. I also see it as a way to stay involved in basketball and other sports, even if I am no longer playing competitively. In the future, I hope to take on more leadership roles in refereeing, perhaps mentoring younger officials or helping organize local sporting events. Refereeing has already had a positive impact on my life, and I am excited to continue growing through this experience while contributing to the enjoyment and development of others in the sports community.

Being the child of a parent in the military can be a profoundly unique and challenging experience. While I do not have a parent in the military, I have witnessed the emotional and practical challenges that families face when a loved one serves in the armed forces. The sacrifices made by military families, especially children, are often overlooked but are no less significant. I deeply empathize with those who grow up in military households, as their experiences are shaped by frequent moves, long separations, and the constant uncertainty that comes with having a parent in service. One of the most significant challenges that children of military parents face is the frequent relocation. Moving from one place to another, often across the country or even internationally, can be both exciting and daunting. It means leaving behind friends, familiar surroundings, and sometimes even extended family. For many military children, the sense of stability that most children take for granted is often fleeting. They must constantly adapt to new environments, schools, and communities. This constant change can be emotionally taxing, but it also fosters resilience, adaptability, and a deep sense of independence. Another challenge military families face is the extended periods of separation. Parents deployed to distant locations often leave for months at a time, sometimes with little communication. The emotional toll on children can be significant, as they miss their parent and struggle with feelings of loneliness or worry about their safety. Military children learn to cope with uncertainty, not knowing when they will see their parent again or if they will return home safely. Despite these challenges, many children of military parents show remarkable strength and maturity. They learn to appreciate the sacrifices their parents make and often take on more responsibility at home to help their families. The emotional impact of a parent’s military service extends beyond the deployment itself. When parents return home, there can be a period of adjustment, as both the service member and their family must navigate the transition from deployment to reintegration into daily life. Military children may struggle with the changes in their relationship with their parent, as the dynamics of the household shift. The challenges of reintegration can be difficult for everyone involved, and military children often find themselves balancing the joy of reunion with the complexities of adapting to a new normal. While these challenges are significant, they also build a strong sense of pride and respect for military families. The resilience and strength exhibited by children of military parents are inspiring. They learn to be flexible, resourceful, and empathetic, often developing a deep sense of patriotism and respect for those who serve. These children grow up with a unique perspective on sacrifice, duty, and service to others, which often shapes their character in profound ways. In conclusion, while I do not have a parent in the military, I have great admiration and sympathy for those who do. The experiences of military children are marked by challenges that most people cannot fully comprehend, yet they face them with incredible strength and resilience. It is important to recognize the sacrifices made by military families and to offer support to those who navigate these unique circumstances. Their experiences are a testament to the courage, love, and commitment that define military families.

      Nicholas J. Criscone Educational Scholarship
My love for science and math has always been a driving force in my education, and I am eager to use that passion to positively impact the education of future students. Through my involvement in the STEM club, I have had the opportunity to explore both subjects in depth, developing not only my knowledge but also my enthusiasm for these fields. I believe that science and math are fundamental to understanding the world around us, and I want to share that excitement with students, helping them see the beauty and importance of these subjects. As an aspiring elementary school teacher, I plan to integrate my passion for math into my classroom by creating engaging and interactive lessons that make math fun and accessible. I want to show students that math is not just about memorizing formulas or solving problems—it’s about problem-solving, critical thinking, and creativity. By making math relatable and exciting, I hope to inspire students to develop a love for the subject and to see it as a tool they can use to solve real-world problems. For example, I would incorporate hands-on activities such as building geometric shapes, using math in cooking to measure ingredients, or solving math puzzles to show students how math is used in everyday life. By demonstrating how math is a practical and useful skill, I hope to make students feel confident and excited about their own abilities. In addition to teaching math, I also want to foster a positive attitude toward science. Eden Alaine Memorial Scholarship
Losing my grandpa was a heart-wrenching experience that changed my life in ways I never anticipated. He drowned while fishing, an event that was both sudden and tragic. My grandpa was an integral part of our family—a kind and adventurous man who had a deep love for the outdoors. He was the one who would take us on fishing trips, share his wisdom, and make us laugh with his stories. His passing left a hole in our family that hasn’t been filled, and the grief that followed was overwhelming. The suddenness of his death made me realize how fragile life truly is. One moment, he was there, and the next, he was gone. This has taught me to never take time with loved ones for granted. It’s easy to get caught up in the busyness of life and forget how precious the moments we share with others are. Since his passing, I’ve tried to live more intentionally, focusing on the people I love and the experiences that matter most. I’ve learned that life can change in an instant, and it’s important to make the most of the time we have. The grief I felt after losing my grandpa pushed me to grow emotionally. I was forced to face the reality of loss at a young age, and while it was painful, it taught me resilience. I learned how to cope with difficult emotions, how to support others who were grieving, and how to find strength in the face of tragedy. In many ways, his passing helped shape my character, making me more empathetic and aware of the struggles others may face. His death also inspired me to live more fully. My grandpa loved life, and he taught me to appreciate the simple joys—whether it was fishing by the lake or just sitting around the dinner table with family. In his memory, I’ve tried to embrace his adventurous spirit, seeking out new experiences and living with curiosity and enthusiasm. I’ve learned to approach life with a sense of gratitude and wonder, just as he did. Losing my grandpa has made me more compassionate toward others. I’ve come to understand that everyone experiences loss in their own way, and that offering support to others in their time of need is one of the most important things we can do. During the difficult time after his passing, my family leaned on each other for support, and I’ve tried to do the same for others in my life. His death taught me the value of human connection and how important it is to be there for others, especially when they’re going through tough times. While the pain of losing him never fully goes away, I carry his memory with me every day. His love for life, his generosity, and his wisdom continue to influence the way I live. His passing has shaped my perspective on life, making me more aware of the fleeting nature of time and the importance of making meaningful connections. It has motivated me to live with purpose, to embrace life’s challenges, and to make the most of every opportunity. Though he is no longer with us, his spirit lives on in the way I approach life and the way I cherish the people I love.

Although I don’t personally play music, my family has a deep connection to music, especially handbell ringing, which has always been a significant part of our lives. Growing up, I had the privilege of witnessing the dedication, skill, and joy my family members have for this unique form of musical expression. Their involvement in handbell choirs has given me a strong appreciation for the art form, even though I don’t play myself. Handbell ringing is a beautiful and intricate art that requires precision, coordination, and teamwork. I have seen firsthand how my family has come together to create beautiful music with handbells. The process of playing handbells is not just about individual skill, but about working harmoniously with others. Each player must be in sync with the others, and the sound that emerges is a result of the collective effort of everyone involved. Watching this collaboration has been inspiring and has shown me the power of music to bring people together, creating a sense of community and shared purpose. Some of the pieces my family has enjoyed playing over the years have been particularly memorable. For example, I’ve watched them perform "A Festive Trumpet Tune" by David German, a piece that is both uplifting and challenging. The intricate arrangements and the way the bells resonate with each other are truly captivating. Another favorite in our household has been pieces arranged by Arnold Sherman, who is known for creating accessible and beautiful music for handbell choirs. His works have allowed my family to explore different musical styles and push the boundaries of what can be achieved with handbells. Even though I don’t play handbells myself, I have a deep respect for the musicianship required to perform these pieces. The art of handbell ringing is not just about playing notes but about conveying emotion and telling a story through the sound of the bells. The resonance and clarity that handbells can produce create a unique musical experience that is unlike any other. I have been fortunate enough to see the joy and fulfillment my family experiences when they perform, and this has made me appreciate the art form even more. Looking ahead, while I may not be actively involved in playing handbells, I do have aspirations to support and advance the art of handbell ringing in other ways. One of my goals is to encourage more people, particularly younger generations, to explore handbell ringing. The beauty of handbells lies not only in the music but also in the sense of community and collaboration they foster. I believe that by introducing more people to handbell ringing, we can help ensure that this art form continues to thrive and inspire. In addition, I would love to see more educational programs or community events that promote handbell ringing. These programs could provide opportunities for individuals to learn about the history and technique of handbells, as well as offer a platform for people to perform and share their music with others. By expanding access to handbell ringing, we can help preserve this art form and allow it to reach new audiences. In conclusion, although I don’t play handbells myself, I have a deep appreciation for the art form, thanks to my family’s involvement. The beauty of handbell ringing lies not only in the music itself but in the way it brings people together and fosters a sense of community. I hope to continue supporting and encouraging the growth of handbell ringing in the future, helping to ensure that this unique and beautiful art form continues to inspire and connect people for years to come.

Traveling to new places and engaging in competitions allowed me to step out of my comfort zone and represent my school and community with pride. Presenting STEM projects, competing in academic challenges, and working alongside talented peers pushed me to improve my skills and develop confidence in my abilities. These experiences taught me the value of preparation, adaptability, and collaboration, which are lessons I will carry with me throughout my life. As a first-generation college student, these extracurricular activities have shaped who I am and prepared me for the challenges ahead. They have instilled in me a sense of responsibility, resilience, and ambition. My involvement in BETA and STEM club has not only enriched my high school experience but also equipped me with the tools to succeed in college and beyond. This journey is deeply personal, yet it extends beyond me. It is about honoring the sacrifices of my family, proving that education can open doors to new possibilities, and inspiring others in my community to pursue their dreams. Being a first-generation college graduate is not just a personal achievement; it is a step toward creating a legacy of hope, perseverance, and opportunity for future generations.
Isaac Yunhu Lee Memorial Arts Scholarship
Art has always been a powerful medium for me to express my thoughts and connect with history, culture, and creativity. One of the most meaningful projects I undertook was recreating Michelangelo’s iconic masterpiece, The Creation of Adam. This painting, originally part of the Sistine Chapel ceiling, has captivated audiences for centuries with its profound depiction of the divine connection between God and humanity. Choosing to paint this masterpiece was both a tribute to its timeless beauty and an opportunity for me to challenge myself artistically. The inspiration for this project stemmed from my admiration for Michelangelo’s work and the Renaissance period as a whole. The Renaissance was a time of immense artistic and intellectual growth, and Michelangelo’s art exemplifies the era’s ideals of humanism and spirituality. The Creation of Adam stood out to me not only because of its technical brilliance but also because of its deep symbolism. The nearly touching hands of God and Adam represent the moment of creation, a theme that resonates with the idea of potential and purpose—concepts I find personally inspiring. Recreating this masterpiece was a journey of discovery and growth. I approached the project with a mix of excitement and apprehension, knowing the challenges of replicating such a detailed and expressive work. The original painting is known for its dynamic composition, anatomical precision, and subtle use of color and light. Capturing these elements required patience and meticulous attention to detail. I spent hours studying Michelangelo’s techniques, from the contours of the figures to the interplay of shadows and highlights that give the painting its lifelike quality. While working on the painting, I gained a deeper appreciation for Michelangelo’s genius. His ability to convey emotion and movement through the human form is unparalleled. As I painted the hands of God and Adam, I felt a profound sense of connection to the original artist and his vision. This part of the painting, where the fingers nearly touch, was particularly meaningful to me. It symbolizes the spark of life, creativity, and the enduring bond between the divine and the human. The process of recreating The Creation of Adam also taught me valuable lessons about perseverance and the importance of embracing challenges. There were moments when the complexity of the piece felt overwhelming, but each small accomplishment—whether it was perfecting a shadow or capturing the right expression—reinforced my confidence and determination. In the end, my version of The Creation of Adam is not an exact replica, but rather a personal interpretation of Michelangelo’s masterpiece. Through this project, I not only honed my technical skills but also deepened my understanding of the emotional and philosophical depth that art can convey. It was a humbling experience to engage with a work of such historical and cultural significance, and it has inspired me to continue exploring art as a means of expression and connection. Recreating The Creation of Adam was more than just an artistic endeavor; it was a journey into the heart of creativity and the human spirit. This experience reaffirmed my belief in the transformative power of art and its ability to bridge the gap between past and present, artist and audience, and the earthly and the divine.

Becoming an elementary school teacher is a meaningful goal that combines my passion for education with a desire to make a positive impact on young learners. To achieve this, I plan to pursue a degree in elementary education while maximizing financial aid opportunities. My journey will require careful planning, effective resource management, and a commitment to academic and professional growth. The first step in my plan is to research colleges with strong elementary education programs. I will evaluate factors such as tuition costs, program reputation, and the availability of scholarships and financial aid. By identifying institutions that align with my career goals, I can ensure that I receive a high-quality education while managing costs effectively. These resources will help me reduce the financial burden of college and allow me to focus on my studies. In preparation for college admission, I will maintain strong academic performance and seek opportunities to demonstrate my dedication to teaching. This includes gathering letters of recommendation from teachers and mentors who can speak to my character and abilities. I will also write a compelling personal statement that highlights my passion for working with children and my long-term commitment to education. By presenting myself as a motivated and capable candidate, I aim to gain admission to a program that will support my career aspirations. While pursuing my degree, I will actively seek experiences that enhance my understanding of education and child development. Volunteering or working with children in schools, community centers, or tutoring programs will provide valuable insights into the challenges and rewards of teaching. A Security Insurance Agency Scholarship
Rising homeowners’ insurance premiums in states like Florida, Texas, California, and Tennessee have become a serious issue, particularly for retirees, single parents, and others on fixed incomes. The frequent natural disasters—hurricanes, floods, and wildfires—are pushing insurance companies to raise premiums or even leave the market, making insurance unaffordable for many. To solve this crisis, a multifaceted approach is needed, balancing the needs of homeowners, insurers, and the overall insurance market. 1. State-Backed Reinsurance Programs One possible solution is state-backed reinsurance. In states with high disaster risks, such as Florida and Texas, the state could create a reinsurance program to help private insurers manage their risks. Reinsurance acts as insurance for insurance companies, providing a financial safety net after catastrophic events. By spreading out the risk, reinsurance can help keep premiums lower and more stable for homeowners. This partnership would make it easier for insurance companies to stay in high-risk areas while keeping coverage affordable for policyholders. 2. Incentivizing Risk Mitigation Another solution is to incentivize homeowners to invest in measures that reduce disaster risk. States and insurers could offer tax credits, grants, or rebates for homeowners who take steps to protect their homes from floods, fires, and hurricanes. For example, homeowners in Tennessee, which faces flooding risks, could receive discounts for elevating their homes, installing sump pumps, or reinforcing flood barriers. Insurance companies could offer lower premiums to policyholders who make such improvements, reducing the overall risk to the insurer and benefiting homeowners with lower costs. 3. State or Regional Insurance Pools A state or regional insurance pool could spread risk across a larger group of homeowners, lowering premiums for high-risk areas. In a pooled system, homeowners would buy insurance through a state-run or regional insurance pool that aggregates premiums and distributes the risk. This approach would allow the state to manage the higher-risk properties more effectively and balance them with properties in safer areas. This could make insurance more affordable for those in flood- or fire-prone regions by reducing the financial burden on individual insurers. 4. Strengthening Building Codes Strengthening building codes and land-use regulations can also help lower the risk of damage from disasters. By requiring new homes to be built to withstand floods, winds, or fires, states can reduce the potential for large-scale damage. In Tennessee, for example, better flood-resistant construction could reduce the number of claims filed due to flooding, ultimately lowering premiums. This proactive approach can help insurance companies manage risk while ensuring that homeowners are better protected. 5. Improving Transparency and Consumer Protection Insurance companies can help by offering more transparency in pricing and policies. Educating homeowners about their options, including the possibility of higher deductibles for lower premiums, can help make insurance more affordable. States could also create a public insurance marketplace where homeowners can easily compare policies, increasing competition among insurers and potentially driving down prices. Insurance agencies can play a critical role by offering flexible and affordable coverage options. They can provide discounts for homeowners who take steps to reduce disaster risk, such as reinforcing homes against floods or fires. By using data analytics and predictive modeling, insurers can more accurately assess risk, helping them set premiums that are fair and affordable. The rising cost of homeowners' insurance due to natural disasters is a growing concern, but solutions are within reach. State-backed reinsurance, risk mitigation incentives, regional insurance pools, strengthened building codes, and better transparency can help address the crisis. Insurance agencies, too, can contribute by offering more flexible, affordable policies. With collaboration between states, insurers, and homeowners, we can create a more resilient and sustainable insurance system that benefits everyone.
      GUTS- Olivia Rodrigo Fan Scholarship
One lyric from Olivia Rodrigo's album GUTS that resonates deeply with my teenage experience is from the song "all-american b***"*: "I’m so insecure, I think / That I’ll die before I drink." This line captures the essence of adolescence—navigating the constant tug-of-war between self-doubt and the pressure to fit in. During the teenage years, we often find ourselves questioning who we are and where we belong, and Rodrigo’s lyric reflects how insecurity can seep into every part of our lives. It speaks to the fear of not measuring up and the pressure to meet others' expectations, a feeling many of us face as we try to figure out our place in the world. In my own teenage experience, I’ve often struggled with self-doubt. There have been countless times when I’ve felt torn between staying true to myself and trying to fit in with friends or society. Whether it’s the pressure to perform well in school, act a certain way around peers, or conform to social media standards, I’ve felt the weight of these external expectations. Rodrigo’s lyric hits home because it highlights how these feelings of insecurity can sometimes feel overwhelming, even to the point of making you doubt your own worth. The line "I’m so insecure" perfectly encapsulates how insecurity is often a hidden struggle. As a teenager, it can feel like everyone else has their life figured out while you're left wondering if you’re doing enough or being enough. We live in a world where it’s easy to compare ourselves to others, and during adolescence, this tendency to compare can feel especially intense. Rodrigo’s song underscores how these feelings can impact not just how we see ourselves but how we interact with the world around us. The lyric reflects the internal conflict of trying to project confidence while secretly battling deep insecurities. Another aspect of this lyric that resonates with me is the feeling of disconnection that comes with insecurity. In the song, the mention of drinking symbolizes a social norm or expectation—something many teens feel pressured to conform to. Rodrigo captures how difficult it can be to navigate social situations when you're not sure of yourself. There’s often this fear of being left out, of not being accepted unless you follow what others are doing. But at the same time, we’re also grappling with our own insecurities, unsure of whether we belong. The lyric speaks to how these pressures can create a sense of isolation, where you feel disconnected both from others and from yourself. Rodrigo’s lyric is a reminder of the importance of self-acceptance. Adolescence can be a time of emotional turmoil, where we feel like we have to prove ourselves in a world that feels constantly demanding. But the message of the song is clear: it’s okay to be insecure, it’s okay to struggle, and it’s okay to take your time to figure things out. It’s a powerful reminder that everyone has their own insecurities and that vulnerability is part of the human experience. We don’t have to have everything figured out to be worthy or to belong. In conclusion, Olivia Rodrigo’s lyric from "all-american b***"* resonates with me because it speaks to the universal teenage experience of self-doubt, pressure, and the challenge of finding our true selves amid external expectations. It captures the emotional complexity of adolescence—the way we try to fit in while silently battling our insecurities. It’s a reminder that while we may feel insecure at times, we’re not alone, and that embracing our imperfections is an essential part of growing up.

      Joieful Connections Scholarship
The journey toward higher education has been shaped by both personal challenges and experiences that have solidified my commitment to pursuing a degree in elementary education. Throughout my high school years, I encountered moments that required resilience and self-reflection, and each of them has prepared me to embrace the demands and opportunities of higher education. The experiences I’ve had—whether volunteering, facing personal challenges, or learning to balance schoolwork with extracurricular activities—have made me more determined to pursue a career where I can make a meaningful impact in the lives of children. One of the most influential experiences that has prepared me for this journey was my involvement in volunteer work at my local church. As an assistant teacher in the children’s Sunday school class, I helped younger children understand basic concepts and guided them through group activities. This early exposure to teaching sparked my passion for working with children and showed me the importance of patience, creativity, and adaptability in a learning environment. It also made me realize that teaching isn’t just about academics—it’s about making children feel seen, heard, and supported in their emotional and social development. This hands-on experience reinforced my desire to pursue a career in education and inspired me to create a positive learning space for every child. In addition to volunteering, I have faced personal challenges that have shaped my character and my approach to education. My family has dealt with difficult times, including the loss of loved ones and navigating financial struggles. These experiences taught me the importance of resilience and empathy—qualities that I know will be valuable in my future role as a teacher. I understand that many children face their own challenges, whether at home or in school, and I want to be the teacher who recognizes these struggles and helps students overcome them. I hope to foster an environment where children feel empowered to face their difficulties and continue moving forward with confidence. I plan to study elementary education because I am passionate about providing young children with the foundation they need to succeed. Early education is crucial in shaping a child’s academic, emotional, and social development, and I want to be a part of that foundation. The elementary years are when children develop their love of learning, build self-esteem, and start to navigate complex social interactions. I want to guide my students through these important years, helping them develop not only their academic skills but also the resilience and emotional intelligence needed for lifelong success. This field is important to me because I believe every child deserves a supportive and inclusive learning environment. Many children face challenges—academic, emotional, or social—and I want to be the teacher who helps them understand that these challenges do not define them. By recognizing each child's unique needs and providing individualized support, I hope to create a classroom where every student feels valued and capable of reaching their full potential. Through my work as a teacher, I hope to make a lasting impact in my community by fostering an environment of kindness, respect, and curiosity. I aim to not only teach academic skills but also instill values like perseverance, empathy, and teamwork in my students. These values will help them succeed in school and in life, and by doing so, I hope to inspire a love for learning that extends beyond the classroom. Additionally, I hope to advocate for educational initiatives in my community, working to ensure that all children, regardless of their background, have access to the resources and support they need to succeed.
      Brian J Boley Memorial Scholarship
I am pursuing a degree in elementary education because I am deeply passionate about shaping young minds, creating a positive learning environment, and nurturing the potential of children. While I aim to become an elementary school teacher, I am also committed to supporting the mental and emotional well-being of my students. As a teacher, I believe that my role goes beyond academics—it is equally important to support my students’ mental health, help them navigate challenges, and guide them toward personal growth. This belief has led me to consider becoming a school counselor in the future or integrating counseling practices into my teaching. Throughout my high school and college experience, I have developed a growing awareness of the impact that mental health has on a child’s overall well-being and ability to succeed in school. In my current education psychology class, I am learning how psychological factors—such as emotional regulation, self-esteem, and social skills—play a significant role in a child’s academic performance and development. The connection between mental health and education is undeniable, and I want to be the type of teacher who understands these connections and provides the necessary support for students to thrive both emotionally and academically. While I am majoring in elementary education, my passion for supporting children’s mental health is something I plan to incorporate into my daily interactions with my students. I want to create a classroom where children feel safe, valued, and supported, where their emotional and social needs are just as important as their academic needs. Many children face emotional challenges, whether it’s dealing with family issues, school-related stress, or struggles with self-esteem. As a teacher, I will make it a priority to listen to my students, recognize when they are struggling, and provide a safe space for them to express their feelings. In addition to the academic curriculum, I will integrate social-emotional learning into my classroom. This includes teaching students how to recognize and manage their emotions, how to communicate effectively with their peers, and how to resolve conflicts in a healthy way. I believe that if children have strong emotional intelligence and coping skills, they will be better equipped to handle the challenges they face both inside and outside the classroom. While I am pursuing a career as a teacher, I understand that some students may need more specialized mental health support. In these cases, I would work closely with school counselors and mental health professionals to ensure that my students receive the care and attention they need. Additionally, if I have the opportunity to pursue further education and become a school counselor in the future, I would be able to directly support students in their mental health journey, helping them navigate personal challenges and develop resilience. My goal as an educator is to make a difference in the lives of my students by being someone they can turn to in times of need—whether for academic support or emotional guidance. I want to empower my students, teach them the value of self-care, and help them understand that it’s okay to seek help when they are struggling. I hope to foster a classroom environment where mental health is prioritized, where students feel comfortable talking about their feelings, and where they are encouraged to take care of both their minds and bodies.

Music has been a constant and powerful force in my life throughout my high school years. From its ability to provide an emotional outlet to its role in fostering connections with others, music has shaped my personal growth, helped me navigate challenges, and inspired me to pursue passions I might not have otherwise discovered. Whether through playing in the school band, singing in the choir, or simply using music as a means of self-expression, it has served as both a refuge and a catalyst for change in my life. Throughout high school, I became deeply involved in the school’s music programs. Joining the marching band as a freshman was one of the most transformative experiences I had. The discipline required to play an instrument while marching, learning new routines, and collaborating with a team taught me the importance of hard work, focus, and resilience. As I practiced every day, the act of making music with my peers became not just about learning a skill but about building a sense of community. In those long hours of practice, we were all united by a common goal, and through our shared effort, we created something much larger than the sum of its parts. Music also played a crucial role in helping me cope with the emotional ups and downs of high school. Like many teenagers, I faced moments of stress, doubt, and anxiety, whether it was related to academics, relationships, or my future. During these times, music offered me an escape—a way to process my emotions and connect with my feelings in a way that words alone could not. Listening to my favorite songs or playing my instrument became a form of therapy. It allowed me to express feelings I couldn’t always articulate and, in doing so, helped me to manage my emotions and find clarity. One of the most profound impacts of music during high school was how it helped me build connections with others. As a member of the band and choir, I had the opportunity to collaborate with classmates from all walks of life. Music was a language we all spoke, and it brought us together in ways that nothing else could. I learned the value of teamwork, trust, and communication through these experiences. Working toward a shared musical performance created bonds that extended beyond rehearsals and performances—it fostered friendships and a sense of belonging. Moreover, music helped me discover my own potential in ways I hadn’t expected. As a high school student, I often doubted myself, questioning my abilities and whether I was capable of succeeding. But through music, I realized that I had untapped talents and the ability to achieve things I once thought were beyond my reach. Whether it was mastering a difficult piece of music or performing in front of a crowd, each accomplishment gave me the confidence to take on new challenges, both in music and in other areas of my life. Ultimately, music has not just been a hobby or extracurricular activity for me—it has been a source of inspiration, resilience, and personal growth. It has taught me the importance of perseverance, the power of collaboration, and the value of expressing oneself creatively. As I look toward the future, I know that music will continue to be a central part of my life, and I hope to carry the lessons I’ve learned through music into whatever path I choose to pursue.
RonranGlee Special Needs Teacher Literary Scholarship
The quote by Professor Harold Bloom, "The purpose of teaching is to bring the student to his or her sense of his or her own presence," has deeply resonated with me as I reflect on my passion for becoming a special education teacher. To me, this statement encapsulates the essence of what teaching is all about: helping students recognize their own worth, value, and potential. It emphasizes that education is not just about transmitting knowledge; it is about guiding students to understand who they are, their abilities, and their unique contributions to the world. In the context of special education, this mission becomes even more crucial. Students with special needs may face additional challenges in recognizing their potential and understanding their place in the world. Many times, society’s perceptions can lead them to question their worth, leaving them feeling disconnected or invisible. As a special education teacher, my primary goal would be to help my students discover their "presence"—their unique voice, identity, and the strength within them that allows them to overcome obstacles and thrive in their own way. Bloom’s statement suggests that teaching should be a transformative experience, one that empowers students to recognize their own value and place in the world. For special education students, this journey may look different for each individual, but it begins with creating an environment where they feel seen, heard, and respected. Every student, regardless of their abilities, deserves to feel confident and capable. This begins with building a trusting relationship in which students feel safe enough to express themselves, take risks, and explore their abilities without fear of judgment. To guide students to a sense of their own presence, I would first focus on fostering an inclusive and supportive classroom environment. This means emphasizing positive reinforcement, celebrating small successes, and tailoring learning to meet each student’s needs. It also involves breaking down tasks into manageable steps and offering praise for each milestone achieved. A student’s sense of self-worth grows when they are given opportunities to succeed, and when they feel that their successes—no matter how small—are noticed and valued. In addition, I believe in empowering students to be active participants in their own learning. This could include setting individual goals with each student, so they can see their progress and take ownership of their journey. As they gain skills and confidence, they begin to see that they have the power to shape their own learning and future. Encouraging self-advocacy and self-awareness helps students develop a strong sense of agency, which is essential for understanding and asserting their presence in the world. A Fairy Tale: The Journey of a Teacher and Her Students Once upon a time, in a faraway kingdom, there was a kind and determined teacher named [Your Name]. She was entrusted with guiding a group of children with special gifts—each one unique in their own way. Some could see the world in colors others could not, while others could hear music in the rustling of leaves, or feel the heartbeat of the earth beneath their feet. Yet, the children often felt lost and unsure of their place in the world. The teacher, understanding that each child had a special gift that made them who they were, set out on a quest to help her students discover their “presence.” She knew the first step was to listen, so she spent many days and nights listening to the children's stories, understanding their fears and dreams, and creating a space where they felt seen. One child, a shy girl who rarely spoke, began to show the teacher a magical picture she had drawn—colors and shapes that no one else could see. Another child, who loved to read but struggled with writing, began sharing his stories aloud to the class, his words flowing with creativity and imagination. Over time, the teacher saw the children grow not just in their knowledge, but in their belief in themselves. They began to speak louder, share their ideas, and help each other. They realized that they were all part of a larger story, that their unique gifts were meant to be shared with the world. By the end of the school year, the once-shy girl was the first to stand and present her art to the class, and the boy who struggled with writing had written an entire story that was shared in a royal assembly. The teacher had helped each of them find their sense of "presence"—their place in the world, their voice, and their confidence. They knew, deep in their hearts, that they were seen, heard, and valued. And so, in that kingdom, the children grew into young adults who carried their unique gifts with pride, knowing that they were capable of achieving greatness, no matter the challenges they faced. My Mission as a Special Education Teacher Just like in the fairy tale, my mission as a special education teacher is to guide my students toward recognizing their own presence in the world. By creating a nurturing environment where they feel understood and supported, I want to help them see that their unique abilities are valuable and worthy of celebration. Through personalized support, encouragement, and empowerment, I will help my students not only succeed academically but also develop the self-confidence to be active participants in their communities. Ultimately, I believe every child has the potential to shine, and as a special education teacher, I want to be the one to help them discover and embrace that potential.

One of the most meaningful stories from my life comes from my grandfather, who served in the Army during the Vietnam War. Though I was young at the time, I remember sitting with him on many afternoons as he shared stories from his time in the service. His tales weren’t always easy to hear, but one particular moment has stayed with me, shaping my understanding of resilience and the importance of staying grounded in the face of adversity. I vividly remember one afternoon when my grandfather was talking about his deployment. He told me about the long, grueling days, the uncertainty, and the constant pressure of being in a foreign land. He wasn’t one to talk much about the hardships he faced, but that day he shared how, even in the darkest times, he and his comrades would find ways to laugh, to help each other, and to hold on to their humanity in a world that often felt overwhelming. He told me that one of his fondest memories was when a group of soldiers, all in the midst of their toughest days, would gather together to share jokes, tell stories, and remind each other of home. “What we needed the most,” he said, “was to find joy in the little things. That’s how we made it through. You can’t let life get the best of you—you have to keep going, even when it feels impossible. And you have to laugh at the craziness, because sometimes it’s all you have.” This lesson of resilience stuck with me. It was more than just a story—it was a lesson in how to face challenges with strength and humor, to always look for hope in difficult circumstances, and to lean on those around you. My grandfather’s ability to remain grounded, despite the chaos around him, taught me the value of maintaining a positive outlook, no matter what life throws your way. His experience in the military showed me the importance of camaraderie and the strength that comes from supporting each other, whether in a war zone or in the everyday struggles of life. Since then, I’ve carried his words with me. Whenever I encounter challenges—whether in school, in my personal life, or in my community—I try to approach them with the same resilience and sense of humor that my grandfather taught me. His example of perseverance and his ability to find light in the darkest moments continues to inspire me as I move forward in my life and career. In many ways, my grandfather’s service and the lessons he imparted have influenced my desire to work with others, especially children. I want to be the kind of mentor and teacher who encourages my students to face adversity with resilience, to find strength in community, and to always look for the positive, even when things seem tough. Just as my grandfather helped his fellow soldiers cope with unimaginable situations, I hope to help others build the confidence and courage to persevere through their own challenges.
Thomas Mashig Foundation Trade School Scholarship
I believe that the most rewarding aspect of life is helping others, whether through small acts of kindness or by offering tangible skills and support. Over the years, I have discovered the power of community, compassion, and the importance of using whatever skills I have to make a positive difference in the lives of others. While I may not have a specific trade skill in the traditional sense, I have gained valuable experiences that have equipped me to make meaningful contributions, and I plan to utilize these skills in my future career, particularly in education. Throughout my life, I’ve found ways to assist others, whether in my school, my community, or within my family. I’ve volunteered at local community centers, helping to organize activities for younger children and providing assistance to those in need. I’ve also tutored peers and younger students in subjects like math and reading, helping them gain confidence in their abilities and improve academically. These experiences have taught me not only how to be patient and empathetic but also how to identify individual needs and adapt to each situation. I learned that sometimes the most powerful way to help is by simply being present and offering a listening ear or a helping hand. One of the most rewarding ways I’ve helped others is by mentoring and assisting children in my community. Whether through summer camps, after-school programs, or volunteering at church, I have spent a lot of time working with younger kids, guiding them in activities, helping them with their schoolwork, and being a positive role model. I find it incredibly fulfilling to see a child light up when they understand a concept or achieve something they’ve been working toward. These experiences have shown me the value of support and encouragement in the developmental years and have motivated me to pursue a career in elementary education. As I pursue my degree in elementary education, I plan to use the skills I’ve gained in these volunteer experiences to foster a classroom environment that nurtures the intellectual, social, and emotional growth of each student. While my trade skills may not involve a specific technical profession, my dedication to teaching, mentoring, and guiding children is a skill set that I will use to make a lasting impact. I plan to utilize my ability to connect with students, identify their needs, and provide individualized support to create an environment where every child feels valued, understood, and capable of succeeding. I also recognize the importance of continuing to develop my skills as an educator. This includes not only gaining knowledge in the field of education but also learning how to incorporate trade and technical skills into my teaching. As I grow in my career, I hope to integrate hands-on learning activities, such as basic problem-solving projects or team-building exercises, that encourage students to think creatively and develop skills that will serve them throughout their lives. By introducing children to the concept of learning through experience, I hope to inspire them to discover their own passions and develop skills they can carry forward into the future. In summary, while my skills may not align with traditional trade professions, I am deeply committed to utilizing my abilities to help others, particularly children, achieve their fullest potential. Through my work as a mentor, tutor, and volunteer, I’ve learned how powerful it can be to give back to the community. My goal is to continue doing this in my career as an elementary educator, using my experience, patience, and dedication to help children succeed both academically and personally.

From a young age, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. This passion has only grown stronger as I’ve navigated the challenges and triumphs of life. Pursuing a degree in elementary education feels like the natural next step for me, a culmination of both my personal experiences and my unwavering belief in the power of education to change lives. Throughout my upbringing, I’ve encountered significant personal hardships, including the loss of loved ones and challenges within my family, which have deepened my empathy, strengthened my resilience, and shaped my desire to work with children. These experiences have taught me invaluable lessons, and I believe they provide the foundation for the kind of teacher I aspire to be. Growing up, I faced several difficult moments, particularly the loss of close family members. These events left me grappling with grief and uncertainty, but they also instilled in me a sense of resilience and an appreciation for the importance of community and support. In times of loss, I often found solace and strength in my teachers, who created safe spaces for me to process my emotions and gave me the tools to focus on my academics. Their care and understanding helped me find my way through some of my darkest moments, and I realized how crucial it is for educators to be not only instructors but also mentors and emotional guides for students. This experience made me want to offer the same kind of support to young children—someone who could be a steady presence in their lives and help them navigate their own challenges, both inside and outside the classroom. My upbringing also taught me the value of hard work, perseverance, and empathy. In a family where I had to balance schoolwork with helping care for younger siblings or managing household responsibilities, I learned the importance of being organized, time-conscious, and empathetic to the needs of others. These life lessons have influenced my desire to become an elementary school teacher, where I can help children develop both academically and emotionally. I understand that many students come from different backgrounds, some with personal challenges of their own, and I want to be the teacher who listens to them, understands their needs, and creates a safe and welcoming space where they can thrive. Through these experiences, I’ve come to realize that teaching is much more than delivering lessons—it’s about building relationships, fostering trust, and providing students with the support they need to succeed in all aspects of life. My goal as a teacher is to not only guide students through their academic journeys but to inspire confidence, kindness, and resilience. I believe that all children deserve a teacher who believes in their potential and will help them discover the strength to overcome obstacles, just as I learned to do in my own life. The decision to pursue a degree in elementary education is deeply rooted in my experiences. I am passionate about working with young children because I understand the importance of the early years in shaping a child’s future. It is during these formative years that children develop their love of learning, their sense of self-worth, and the foundational skills they need to succeed. I want to be part of that critical process, helping students build the skills they need for a successful academic future and teaching them the value of compassion, hard work, and perseverance.

The marching arts have had a profound impact on my life, shaping who I am today and influencing both my personal growth and future aspirations. I’ve been involved in the marching band and color guard for several years, and through this experience, I have learned valuable lessons in discipline, teamwork, and resilience. These lessons have not only enhanced my academic life but have also motivated me to pursue a career where I can pass on similar values to others, particularly in the field of elementary education. From the moment I first joined the marching band, I was captivated by the energy and precision required to perform at a high level. The hours of practice, the attention to detail, and the coordination needed to create a cohesive performance taught me the importance of hard work and perseverance. The experience of working as part of a team, where everyone’s individual efforts contribute to a collective goal, instilled in me a sense of responsibility and collaboration. These are values I carry with me in everything I do, whether it’s in my academic studies, my volunteer work, or my interactions with others. The marching arts also taught me about the power of persistence. There were countless times during long rehearsals when things didn’t come together as smoothly as we hoped, or when I faced personal challenges in mastering a particular routine or skill. Yet, every time, we were encouraged to push through and keep improving. That experience of overcoming obstacles and celebrating growth has inspired me to embrace challenges in all areas of my life and to view setbacks as opportunities for growth rather than insurmountable barriers. These experiences in the marching arts have directly influenced my aspirations for the future. I plan to major in elementary education with a focus on helping young children develop not only academically but also emotionally and socially. The marching arts have shown me how important it is to build a positive, supportive community, where everyone feels valued and encouraged to grow. I want to bring that same sense of collaboration, discipline, and enthusiasm into my future classroom. Just as I was inspired by my directors, peers, and mentors, I want to be the kind of teacher who helps students realize their potential and fosters a love of learning that extends beyond the classroom. Receiving this scholarship would be a critical step in helping me achieve my goal of becoming an educator. As someone who has been involved in various extracurricular activities like marching band and color guard, I have balanced my studies with the demands of practice and performance. Financial support would ease the burden on my family, allowing me to focus more on my studies and my passion for teaching. This scholarship would also provide the opportunity to continue my education without the stress of financial strain, enabling me to pursue the training and experiences that will make me the best teacher I can be. Moreover, this scholarship would allow me to stay involved in the extracurricular activities that have shaped me, like volunteering and working with children in various capacities. Being able to participate in these activities while pursuing my degree would help me gain the experience necessary to succeed as a teacher and mentor. In short, this scholarship would not only support my academic journey but also allow me to continue giving back to my community through the activities that have inspired me and brought me the most growth.

Although I have not been personally involved in the armed forces, I have had the privilege of knowing several family members and close friends who have served in the military, and their experiences have deeply shaped my understanding of service, sacrifice, and gratitude. Through their stories, I have come to appreciate the immense dedication and courage required to serve in the armed forces, as well as the challenges that service members face both during and after their time in uniform. One family member who stands out is my [mention a family member if you’d like—e.g., "uncle," "grandfather," or "cousin"], who served in [branch of military]. Hearing about their experiences and the sacrifices they made, not just for their own safety but for the well-being of others, has given me a deep sense of respect for all those who have chosen to protect our country. It’s not just the time spent in service that resonates with me but the lasting impact it has had on their lives and the lives of those around them. The stories of camaraderie, resilience, and even the personal sacrifices that come with military service have inspired me to approach life with a greater sense of gratitude and purpose. As I reflect on what it means to express gratitude to service members, I understand it goes beyond simply saying “thank you.” Gratitude is about recognizing the sacrifices made—often at great personal cost—and understanding that the freedom and security we enjoy are not without a price. It means honoring the service members, both past and present, who have fought to defend our rights and way of life. Gratitude also involves acknowledging the emotional and physical toll of military service, as many service members return home with scars, both visible and invisible, that require ongoing care and support. In my everyday life, I express my gratitude by supporting veterans and active-duty service members in ways that go beyond words. Whether it’s volunteering with organizations that assist veterans, donating to causes that support military families, or simply taking the time to listen to their stories, I try to show my appreciation through action. I also understand the importance of advocating for better care and resources for those who have served, ensuring that they receive the respect and support they deserve. For me, gratitude is not just about acknowledging the service of others; it’s about recognizing the sacrifices that allow me to live the life I do. I strive to live in a way that honors those who have served, by fostering a greater sense of appreciation for freedom, and by encouraging others to never take that freedom for granted. Whether through words, actions, or simply a moment of reflection, I believe that showing gratitude to our service members is an ongoing commitment to recognizing their sacrifices and the freedoms we hold dear.

In high school, I had the opportunity to participate in the STEM club, and it quickly became one of the most enjoyable and rewarding parts of my academic experience. Whether we were conducting experiments, solving problems in teams, or designing small engineering projects, I was fascinated by how STEM fields encouraged creative thinking, collaboration, and practical problem-solving. I loved the hands-on, interactive nature of the work, and I could see firsthand how STEM promotes critical thinking and a growth mindset. This experience sparked my interest in how these subjects are taught and how they can inspire curiosity and innovation in young minds. While I don’t plan to pursue a career specifically in STEM, my time in the club reinforced my desire to incorporate these fields into my teaching. My true passion lies in elementary education, where I can combine my love for math and science with my commitment to nurturing and educating young children. In my future classroom, I want to bring the excitement of STEM to life for my students, helping them develop a strong foundation in subjects like math and science while encouraging them to explore, ask questions, and think critically about the world around them. I believe that introducing STEM early on is crucial in fostering an environment where children feel empowered to tackle challenges, think creatively, and approach problems with a sense of curiosity. As an elementary educator, I want to show students that math and science are not just subjects confined to textbooks or test scores but are real-world tools that help us understand everything from the natural world to technological advancements. I want to create hands-on, engaging lessons where students can see the relevance of STEM in their own lives and experience the excitement of discovery firsthand. Additionally, I’ve come to realize how important it is to make STEM subjects accessible and enjoyable for all students, regardless of their background or future ambitions. By introducing young children to math and science in an engaging and supportive environment, I can help them develop confidence in their abilities, which can have a lasting impact on their academic journey. I want to be the teacher who helps my students understand that they don’t have to be “good” at math or science to enjoy it—they just need to be willing to explore and learn. While my focus will be on teaching elementary education, my background in STEM will allow me to bring a unique perspective to my teaching. Whether through interactive science experiments, math games, or group problem-solving activities, I aim to make these subjects exciting, approachable, and meaningful for my students. I want them to understand that learning can be fun and that the world of STEM is full of possibilities for anyone willing to explore it. Ultimately, I see my role as a teacher not only as an educator but as someone who helps students develop a love of learning, especially in subjects that might initially seem intimidating or challenging. By fostering curiosity, critical thinking, and a sense of wonder, I hope to inspire my students to pursue their interests, whether in STEM fields or other areas of study. I’m excited to use my passion for STEM to make a positive and lasting impact on my students, showing them that learning is an adventure they can enjoy for a lifetime.

Since middle school, I’ve known that I wanted to be a teacher. What started as a vague desire to help others has evolved into a deep commitment to elementary education, specifically within a Christian school setting. My passion for teaching was first ignited when I helped with the children’s class at church, and over time, I came to realize that this calling was not only about teaching academic subjects but also about guiding children’s personal and spiritual growth. The first time I volunteered in the church children’s class, I was entrusted with small responsibilities—leading activities, helping with lessons, and interacting with the kids. I quickly found joy in working with children, watching how eager they were to learn and how even simple activities could make a significant impact on their day. I realized that I wanted to be the person who sparked that joy for learning in others. This experience left a lasting impression on me, and from that point on, I knew that teaching was the path I wanted to follow. While my love for teaching had always been clear, it wasn’t until my senior year of high school that I gained clarity about the direction I wanted to take. I had always envisioned myself in an educational role, but it wasn’t until I reflected more deeply on my values and goals that I recognized my desire to teach in a Christian school. I realized that I wanted to create an environment where children could not only learn foundational academic skills but also grow spiritually and morally. Teaching at a Christian school would allow me to integrate my faith into my teaching, providing children with the tools to succeed academically while also fostering kindness, integrity, and empathy. In high school, I began to explore more about the impact of Christian education, particularly in elementary settings, and it became clear to me that this was the right path. I wanted to teach in a way that combined academic excellence with character development. I saw firsthand how a positive, nurturing environment could help children not only understand the material but also build confidence, develop social skills, and learn how to be kind and respectful. These values, combined with my love for working with kids, solidified my decision to pursue a degree in elementary education. Looking ahead, I’m excited about the opportunity to become the kind of teacher who inspires and encourages children to become the best versions of themselves. I understand that teaching is not just about imparting knowledge, but about creating an atmosphere where students feel safe, valued, and supported in their learning. I want to be the teacher who recognizes the unique strengths of each child and helps them navigate the challenges they may face, both in and outside of the classroom. Through my role as a teacher, I hope to make a lasting difference in the lives of my future students. As I move forward with my education, I’m more certain than ever that my passion for teaching at a Christian school is the right path for me. The lessons I learned from volunteering in the church children’s class have shaped my understanding of the profound impact a teacher can have on a child’s life. I’m eager to pursue my degree in elementary education, and I’m excited to someday work in a school where I can combine academic instruction with spiritual growth. By doing so, I hope to inspire the next generation of learners, just as I was inspired all those years ago.
      Sandra West ALS Foundation Scholarship
While I do not have a parent with ALS, I have faced significant personal challenges that have shaped my educational journey and aspirations. Over the course of a year, I experienced the loss of close family members and friends, which profoundly impacted my emotional well-being and outlook on life. During this time, I struggled with grief and uncertainty, yet these hardships taught me valuable lessons about resilience, empathy, and the importance of community support. It’s heartbreaking to think about the children who have parents diagnosed with ALS. The physical and emotional toll that ALS takes on families is immense, and for young children, the experience can be especially confusing and painful. These children often witness a loved one gradually lose their abilities, leaving them to cope with not only the inevitable changes in their family life but also the deep emotional strain of seeing someone they love struggle. The fear of losing a parent, along with the potential for increased responsibilities at home, can create feelings of sadness, helplessness, and isolation. It's important to remember that these children need a network of support—people who can offer understanding, compassion, and a safe space for them to process their emotions during such an incredibly difficult time. My heart goes out to them, and I hope that, as a society, we can continue to support these families in meaningful ways. These experiences made me realize the power of education in shaping not only intellectual growth but also emotional strength. In particular, I became inspired to pursue a career in elementary education, as I understand how critical it is to provide young students with both the academic tools they need and the emotional support to navigate life's challenges. I want to be the kind of teacher who not only helps students achieve their potential in subjects like math and reading but also offers guidance and encouragement through difficult times. In terms of my financial circumstances, I come from a family that has faced significant challenges. Due to personal setbacks, including the loss of loved ones and financial strain, I have had to balance my educational goals with part-time work to help support my family. While this experience has taught me the value of hard work and perseverance, it has also underscored the importance of scholarship support in helping me pursue higher education. Receiving this scholarship would alleviate the financial burden on my family and allow me to focus more fully on my studies and community involvement. It would provide me with the opportunity to continue my education in elementary education, enabling me to work toward my goal of becoming a teacher who can make a meaningful impact in the lives of young learners. With the help of this scholarship, I would be able to dedicate myself to learning, growing, and ultimately giving back to my community in a way that will create positive change for future generations.

Exemplifying a spirit of excellence in my everyday life is something I take to heart, both in my personal actions and in how I interact with others. For me, excellence isn't just about achieving high grades or being the best at something; it's about consistently striving to do my best, regardless of the task, and maintaining a positive attitude toward challenges. It's also about being intentional in how I contribute to the well-being of my community, always seeking opportunities to make a meaningful impact. One way I demonstrate a spirit of excellence is through a strong work ethic and attention to detail. Whether it's in my schoolwork, my part-time job, or volunteer activities, I hold myself to a high standard. For instance, when I work on a project or complete an assignment, I don't simply aim to finish it— I strive to ensure that my work is thorough, well thought out, and reflective of my best effort. Even when tasks feel routine or difficult, I remind myself that excellence is found in consistency, persistence, and a willingness to push through setbacks. In addition to personal excellence, I believe giving back to my community is a crucial part of living a fulfilling and meaningful life. I try to embody this through volunteer work, tutoring, and simply being a source of support for those around me. For example, I tutor younger students in subjects like math and reading, not only because I enjoy teaching but also because I understand how important it is to help others succeed. Through tutoring, I try to model patience and perseverance, showing the students that with hard work and the right mindset, they can overcome academic challenges. I also try to stay actively involved in local community service projects. I volunteer at food banks, organize charity drives, and help coordinate community events aimed at raising awareness for local issues. These activities not only allow me to give back but also remind me of the power of collective effort. Whether it's helping others in need or simply lending a hand to a neighbor, I try to lead by example, showing that even small actions can make a big difference. In my everyday interactions, I strive to embody kindness and empathy, understanding that excellence is not just measured by achievements but by how we treat others. I try to be a good listener, offer support when needed, and encourage those around me to be their best selves. I believe that excellence is about uplifting others as much as it is about striving to improve ourselves. Ultimately, I see my commitment to excellence and my desire to give back to the community as interconnected. By striving for excellence in all aspects of my life, I hope to inspire others to do the same and create a ripple effect of positivity and support. Whether it's helping someone with their homework, volunteering at an event, or simply offering a smile, I try to live with the mindset that excellence isn’t just about personal success—it's about making the world around me a little bit better, one action at a time.

Over the course of a single year, I faced an overwhelming series of personal challenges. My parents divorced, several close family members passed away, and tragically, two of my best friends also died. It felt as though my world had been turned upside down, and I struggled to make sense of the immense grief and loss. During this difficult time, I found myself questioning many things—my sense of stability, my purpose, and even my own strength. However, these experiences, though painful, have shaped my perspective on life and education in profound ways. Through the intense emotional turmoil, I learned the importance of resilience, empathy, and the power of a strong support system. I realized how critical it is to have a positive influence in times of hardship, and how much the presence of compassionate individuals—teachers, mentors, friends—can help someone find hope again, even in the darkest of moments. This journey has deepened my desire to pursue a career in elementary education. As I navigated my grief, I understood more clearly how essential it is to provide young minds with a safe and nurturing space where they can thrive emotionally, socially, and intellectually. Education is not just about academics; it's about helping children build the emotional and social resilience they need to face life’s challenges. I want to be that teacher who not only teaches math or reading but also helps students develop the confidence to overcome obstacles and the empathy to support one another. The loss of loved ones and the upheaval in my family taught me that everyone is carrying something invisible, something that can be overwhelming. I want to be an educator who is attuned to the emotional and psychological needs of my students, recognizing that sometimes, a kind word, a patient ear, or a simple act of encouragement can make a lasting impact. It has also instilled in me a deep sense of gratitude for the power of education, not just as a tool for academic achievement, but as a vehicle for personal growth and healing. As I move forward in my education, I plan to use the lessons I’ve learned from my own struggles to create a classroom environment where students feel seen, heard, and valued. I want to help foster a generation that is not only academically equipped but also emotionally intelligent, resilient, and compassionate. In the future, I hope to inspire my students to persevere in the face of challenges and to approach the world with kindness and empathy. My experiences have shown me how important it is to support the next generation in ways that go beyond traditional teaching. I plan to use my education to make a difference not only in the classroom but also in the broader community, promoting values of empathy, understanding, and resilience in every child I have the privilege of teaching. By helping young people develop the emotional strength to cope with life’s inevitable challenges, I believe I can contribute to creating a more compassionate and supportive world for us all.
