Growing up in a world shaped by social media, I often found myself struggling with comparison and the pressure to fit into unrealistic standards. What began as a fun way to connect with others quickly turned into a space where I questioned my value. Scrolling through endless photos of “perfect” people living “perfect” lives, I couldn’t help but compare myself. It seemed like everyone else was happier, more confident, and more successful. Over time, that comparison quietly stole my joy and self-esteem.
I wouldn’t say I suffered from depression, but I did experience deep moments of insecurity and self-doubt. I constantly felt like I had to meet a standard that was impossible to achieve. The pressure to appear perfect on social media made me feel disconnected from my true self. I began to realize that the person I was online didn’t fully reflect who I truly was inside.
The turning point came when I decided to stop hiding those feelings and seek real healing. I turned to God for guidance, asking Him to help me see myself through His eyes rather than through the lens of comparison. My faith reminded me that my worth comes from who I am, not from how others perceive me. Through prayer and reflection, I learned to find peace and confidence in my purpose instead of chasing validation.
Alongside my faith, I leaned on my close group of friends who reminded me that perfection doesn’t exist and that authenticity is what truly connects people. I also sought professional help, which gave me tools to manage negative thoughts and create healthy boundaries with social media. Learning to balance my online presence with real-life connections helped me rediscover the joy of being myself.
Addressing the impact of social media on mental health and self-esteem requires both personal reflection and collective responsibility. On a personal level, I believe we should use social media more mindfully — taking breaks when necessary and surrounding ourselves with positive, encouraging content. Schools and communities can also play a role by teaching young people how to navigate social media in a healthy way, emphasizing self-worth over appearance or popularity.
At a broader level, social media companies should do more to promote authenticity. Algorithms often favor superficial or idealized content, which can harm self-esteem. By highlighting diverse, positive, and realistic voices, these platforms can help create a healthier digital space where people feel empowered instead of compared.
Through my own experience, I’ve learned that confidence is built on faith, self-acceptance, and genuine human connection — not on likes or followers. I hope to use my voice to inspire others who might feel trapped by comparison. Whether through my studies, friendships, or future career in healthcare, I want to remind others that true worth is found in kindness, purpose, and faith.
Social media will always be part of our world, but how we use it is up to us. My goal is to help create a culture that values authenticity over perfection and connection over comparison. We are all more than what we post — and learning to believe that has been one of the most powerful lessons of my life.
Aaryn Railyn King Foundation Scholarship
Ever since I was a child growing up in the Dominican Republic, I was fascinated by the way doctors could change people’s lives with both knowledge and compassion. I remember accompanying my grandmother to a small local clinic where the doctor treated every patient with kindness, even when medical supplies were limited. Seeing how deeply one person’s care could ease someone else’s pain left a lasting impression on me. It was in those early moments that I realized I wanted to dedicate my life to medicine—not just to treat illness, but to restore hope.
When I decided to study in the United States, I knew it would be a life-changing opportunity, but I also understood it would come with challenges. As an international student from the Dominican Republic, I have faced obstacles that tested both my strength and determination. Adjusting to a new culture, learning to communicate effectively in a second language, and managing financial and academic pressures have not been easy. There were times when I questioned whether I truly belonged. However, every challenge reminded me of why I started this journey—to make a difference through medicine, no matter how hard the path might be.
These struggles have shaped me into someone resilient, adaptable, and compassionate. They have taught me that perseverance and empathy are just as important as knowledge in becoming a great doctor. I’ve learned to appreciate diversity, to listen to people’s stories, and to find strength in my identity as both an immigrant and a future healthcare provider. I believe that these experiences will allow me to connect with patients on a deeper level and to serve as an advocate for those who often feel unseen or unheard.
My goal as a future physician is to use my education to help reduce healthcare disparities, especially in underserved communities. I am particularly passionate about improving access to preventive care and health education in the Dominican Republic, where many people still struggle to receive consistent medical attention. I plan to work in both clinical and community settings, combining patient care with public health initiatives that focus on early intervention and education. I also hope to collaborate with organizations that bring medical resources to rural and low-income areas, both in Latin America and the United States.
In the long term, I aspire to become a physician who not only heals but also leads efforts to create sustainable improvements in healthcare systems. Whether through research, advocacy, or direct patient care, I want to be part of a generation of doctors who see medicine as a global mission—one that transcends borders and cultures. My experiences as an international student have already taught me the power of bridging differences and finding common ground. I want to use that perspective to bring empathy and equity into every aspect of my career.
Medicine, to me, is not simply a profession; it is a calling to serve humanity with integrity and compassion. Every long night of studying, every sacrifice my family and I have made, and every obstacle I’ve overcome have brought me closer to fulfilling that calling. I carry my Dominican roots with pride, and I am determined to use my journey as proof that with dedication, faith, and kindness, it is possible to make a meaningful impact on the world.
This scholarship would not only help ease my financial burden as an international student but also bring me one step closer to becoming the kind of doctor who gives back—someone who heals, inspires, and uplifts others.
Maggie's Way- International Woman’s Scholarship
As I reflect on the life and journey of Malgorzata “Maggie” Kwiecien, I am deeply inspired by her courage, determination, and intellectual boldness. Her story resonates with me not only as a woman pursuing higher education in the United States but also as someone who left her home country behind to follow a dream. Like Maggie, I have learned that bravery is not the absence of fear, but the strength to move forward despite it.
In 2022, I left the Dominican Republic to study Biology on a pre-medical track in the United States. It was the first time I had ever been away from my family. I arrived with no support system, only determination and faith that I could build a new future for myself. Like Maggie when she moved to the U.S. alone, I faced the challenges of adapting to a new culture, language, and academic environment. There were moments of uncertainty and loneliness, but I refused to let those feelings hold me back. Instead, they motivated me to become more independent and resilient.
Maggie’s fearlessness in facing both physical and intellectual challenges is something I deeply admire and strive to embody. While my path has been different, I have learned to approach every academic and personal challenge with that same spirit of courage. Balancing demanding science courses, part-time work, and cultural adaptation has tested my endurance and discipline. Yet through these experiences, I have discovered how capable I truly am. Each late-night study session, each exam, and each obstacle overcome represents a step toward the future I envision as a doctor one who serves with compassion and dedication.
Maggie’s intellectual curiosity and commitment to mastering her field remind me of my own passion for learning. I have always been fascinated by the complexity of life and the human body, which led me to major in Biology. My coursework and research experiences have strengthened my desire to contribute to the medical field, not only through scientific understanding but also through empathy for others. Like Maggie, I believe knowledge is not only a personal achievement but a tool for service and progress.
Beyond academics, I am committed to helping others who face the same challenges I once did. I volunteer with health awareness initiatives and offer guidance to other international students who are adjusting to life in a new country. In doing so, I aim to carry forward Maggie’s legacy of strength, kindness, and intellectual passion.
The scholarship established in her memory represents more than financial support it is a continuation of Maggie’s mission to uplift women who dare to dream boldly. If selected, I will honor her legacy by continuing to pursue my education with perseverance, curiosity, and heart. Like Maggie, I will strive to live fearlessly, to keep learning, and to inspire others to do the same.
