Pursuing Higher Education in the United States
I come from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where my family instilled in me the values of hard work, perseverance, and the significance of education. Despite their limited education ( Mom -high school, Dad : community college) , my parents made sacrifices to ensure my siblings and I received a quality education, fostering my academic and personal growth through local schools and extracurricular activities.
My decision to pursue higher education in the United States stems from a desire to gain global perspectives and access world-class educational resources. Witnessing the achievements of international students who have made significant contributions solidified my ambition. Choosing East Carolina University (ECU) and its renowned Brody School of Medicine aligns with my goal to become a medical professional specializing in orthopedic surgery.
As an international student at ECU, I have embraced the North Carolina lifestyle and engaged with diverse communities. Interacting with peers and sharing cultural insights has enriched my experience, fostering new friendships and academic growth. This inclusive environment has enhanced my learning and personal development, reflected in my strong academic performance with a 3.5 GPA in my first semester as a Biology major.
During high school, economic hardships hit my family when my father lost his first job, straining our ability to fund my education. Despite these challenges, I persevered by applying for scholarships, and seeking mentorship. The ongoing conflicts in the DRC have compounded. These difficulties, adversely affect my father's ability to support my education financially.
Both Nelson Mandela's quote, "Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world," and Dr. E. Taban from Sudan have been sources of inspiration for me. Dr. Taban's journey from war-ridden Sudan to success, and his commitment to giving back to the community, epitomize resilience and determination. His story reinforces my belief in overcoming challenges through education and making a positive impact.
Currently, my family faces a significant financial burden, with my father needing to cover $19,000 out-of-state tuition out of pocket for my education. Securing this $5,000 scholarship would alleviate some of the strain, motivating my father and reaffirming our commitment to educational pursuits despite adversities.
Upon completing my studies at ECU, I intend to return to the DRC and contribute to healthcare improvements. My goal is to enhance orthopedic care and expand access to quality healthcare in rural areas, while mentoring aspiring students from my community to pursue their academic dreams.
Pursuing higher education in the United States represents more than personal ambition, it signifies a commitment to effecting positive change. My journey has taught me resilience, and inspired me to strive for excellence in contributing to global healthcare challenges.
