Augustus L. Harper Scholarship
When immigrating to this country when I was 3 years old, my mother gave up her dreams of becoming an engineer. She moved to the united states with me and immediately picked up insignificant jobs to get by in a new country. Ever since she has ingrained me with the passion for knowledge. My mother taught me that knowledge and wisdom is power. I was not exposed to technology like similar students in my generation, I did not have a personal cell phone until I was 14. I used books and school to keep me company. Reading was always a passion of mine since I was young and i contribute it to my success in education. I can see the world with new eyes and hear stories that may not look like mine. Education is a stepping stone for future success. Always keep learning even after college.
Science Fiction Becomes Science Fact Scholarship
Thanks to the internet, people have been more connected than ever. However, social interaction and communication in person helps develop fundamental interpersonal skills. I do think we live in a "meme" culture, in which everything that goes viral get swirled around in this informational vacuum. Civil discourse is how society understands each other and works towards goals. The impact of technology on children can already been seen by current generations being more prone to conditions like anxiety and depression. People become great communicators and orators by talking to people. Without in person interactions you will not be able to develop skills like reading body language or emotional intelligence.
This has little relation to me as i do not play video games, and i rarely use social media. However, I do this with reason. Social media when I was a teenager damaged how i view myself and body expectations. I dont play video games as I would rather be reading a book.
Yan Scholarship
Immigrating to the United States was never supposed to be easy. When my mother brought me to this country when I was 2 years old I never knew what that would mean for my future. The reality is she brought me to the united states to seek better opportunities than was offered in my home country of Venezuela. education has always been a priority in my life. I was brought up to be believe that knowledge and truth hold all power. I am an extremely curious individual who just want to solve large economic problems to avoid the economic collapse that happened in my own country. I am inspired by those who risk their lives in search of truth and hope i can emulate this as i seek out my academic career.
