My decision to pursue higher education at this stage of my life is the result of a long journey shaped by responsibility, resilience, and purpose. For many years, my focus was centered on caring for my family and meeting immediate needs. Education remained important to me, but it often took a secondary place while I navigated personal challenges, financial responsibilities, and the demands of motherhood. Returning to school was not an impulsive decision; it was a thoughtful and courageous choice rooted in growth, reflection, and a renewed sense of purpose.
My life experiences have deeply shaped my personal values. As a single parent, I have learned the importance of perseverance, organization, and self-discipline. Balancing family responsibilities while pursuing my education has required consistency, sacrifice, and faith in my ability to move forward despite obstacles. These experiences have strengthened my belief that challenges do not define our limits, but rather shape our character. They have taught me patience, empathy, and the value of showing up every day with commitment and integrity.
These values have directly influenced my career aspirations. Through my academic journey and hands-on experiences, I discovered a strong calling to work in education, particularly with students who require additional support and understanding. I am passionate about creating structured, inclusive, and compassionate learning environments where individuals feel seen, capable, and supported. My experiences have shown me the powerful impact that educators and caregivers can have when they approach their work with intention, empathy, and consistency. This has solidified my goal of pursuing a career where I can serve others meaningfully through education and support services.
My commitment to community service is deeply connected to my personal journey. I understand the challenges faced by families, students, and individuals who navigate systems that are not always designed to meet diverse needs. Because of this, I am motivated to give back by serving my community with compassion and advocacy. I plan to use my education to support individuals and families by promoting inclusive practices, providing guidance, and contributing to environments that foster growth, dignity, and opportunity. My goal is to be a professional who not only applies knowledge, but also uplifts others through understanding and service.
This scholarship would play a critical role in helping me achieve these goals. Financial support would reduce the burden of tuition and educational expenses, allowing me to focus fully on my studies while maintaining stability for my family. It would provide the opportunity to continue my education without interruption and strengthen my ability to complete my degree successfully. More importantly, this scholarship represents an investment in my commitment to serve others and create positive change within my community.
Pursuing higher education at this stage in my life reflects my belief that growth has no expiration date. My journey has prepared me with resilience, purpose, and a deep commitment to service. With the support of this scholarship, I am confident in my ability to complete my education and use it to make a meaningful and lasting impact in my chosen field and in the community I serve.
Poynter Scholarship
Balancing my education with my commitment to my family as a single parent is both my greatest challenge and my greatest motivation. I am the mother of two daughters, one in seventh grade and the other in ninth grade, and they are the center of my life. Every decision I make—especially the decision to continue my education—is rooted in my responsibility to them and my desire to model perseverance, discipline, and hope through action.
As a single parent, balance does not happen by accident; it requires structure, planning, and intention. I approach my academic responsibilities with the same organization and consistency that I use to support my children. I maintain a structured daily routine that allows dedicated time for my coursework while also prioritizing my daughters’ academic needs, emotional well-being, and presence in their lives. We share a schedule that values both school responsibilities and family time, reinforcing the importance of commitment and mutual support. By being transparent with my children about my goals and responsibilities, I have created an environment where education is respected and encouraged.
My daughters are my reason for everything I do. I want them to see that perseverance is not just something we talk about, but something we live. Returning to school has allowed me to show them that obstacles—whether financial, personal, or academic—do not determine our limits. Instead, they shape our character. I strive to be present for them not only as a parent, but as an example of resilience and determination. Watching me pursue my degree has helped them understand the value of education and the importance of believing in oneself, even when the journey is difficult.
This scholarship would play a crucial role in helping me successfully balance my responsibilities and complete my degree. Financial support would reduce the pressure of balancing tuition, educational expenses, and household needs. By alleviating some of this burden, the scholarship would allow me to focus more fully on my academic work while maintaining stability for my family. It would provide me with the opportunity to dedicate my time and energy to my studies without compromising my role as a present and supportive parent.
Earning my degree is not only a personal goal; it is a long-term investment in my family’s future. Completing my education will allow me to pursue a career where I can provide greater stability, serve others meaningfully, and contribute positively to my community. More importantly, it will demonstrate to my daughters that dedication, education, and perseverance can transform lives. I want them to grow up knowing that their dreams are valid and achievable, regardless of circumstances.
In balancing education and family, I have learned that strength comes from purpose. My children give me that purpose every day. This scholarship would not only support my academic journey, but also strengthen my ability to provide for my family and continue building a future grounded in education, resilience, and hope. I am committed to completing my degree with integrity and determination, knowing that every step forward is a step toward a better future for my daughters and for myself.
Susie Green Scholarship for Women Pursuing Education
The courage to go back to school did not come from a single moment of confidence, but from a gradual realization that my life had more purpose waiting to be fulfilled. For many years, I placed my personal goals on hold while prioritizing my family, responsibilities, and survival. Education remained a quiet dream in the background—something I valued deeply, but believed was no longer meant for me. Returning to school required courage because it meant confronting doubt, fear, and the belief that it might be “too late.” What gave me that courage was understanding that growth does not have an expiration date.
One of the strongest motivations behind my decision to return to school was my desire to create a better future for my children and to model perseverance through action. I wanted them to see that challenges, interruptions, and setbacks do not define the end of a journey. By choosing to continue my education, I showed them that commitment, discipline, and resilience matter at every stage of life. This decision was not only personal; it was generational. I wanted my children to witness what it looks like to pursue goals with determination, even when the path is difficult.
Another source of courage came from recognizing my own calling to serve others through education and care. Over time, I realized that my experiences—both personal and academic—had prepared me to support individuals with diverse needs. Returning to school was not simply about earning a degree; it was about aligning my education with a deeper purpose. I felt driven to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to make a meaningful impact in the lives of students who require patience, structure, and compassion. That sense of purpose transformed fear into motivation.
The journey back to school has not been easy. Balancing coursework, financial responsibilities, and personal challenges required discipline and sacrifice. There were moments of exhaustion and self-doubt, but my determination kept me moving forward. Each completed course reinforced my belief that I was capable, resilient, and deserving of this opportunity. Going back to school strengthened my confidence and reaffirmed my ability to navigate challenges with focus and perseverance.
Returning to school has already had a significant impact on my life and the lives of those around me. It has expanded my perspective, deepened my empathy, and strengthened my commitment to serving others. I approach my education with intention, knowing that each step forward brings me closer to creating meaningful change through my future work. This scholarship would not only support my academic journey, but also amplify the impact I strive to make in my community.
Ultimately, the courage to return to school came from choosing growth over fear and purpose over comfort. I am driven by the belief that education is a powerful tool for transformation—both personal and collective. By continuing my education, I am honoring my aspirations, my family, and my commitment to making a lasting difference. That courage continues to guide me forward, one determined step at a time.
Nabi Nicole Grant Memorial Scholarship
There was a moment in my life when relying on my faith was not a choice, but a necessity. I was facing one of the most challenging periods of my life while continuing my education and caring for my responsibilities. During this time, my faith became the foundation that allowed me to remain grounded, calm, and hopeful, even when circumstances were uncertain.
Faith, for me, has always meant trust—trust that even when the path is difficult and the outcome unclear, there is purpose in continuing forward with courage and integrity. This understanding became especially important when I was diagnosed with cancer while enrolled in my academic program. During treatment, including chemotherapy, I continued my second semester of Occupational Therapy. It was not an easy process, but my faith allowed me to approach each day with peace rather than fear. I learned to focus on what I could control: showing up, doing my best, and trusting the process.
Throughout this experience, my faith gave me strength to persevere without losing hope. Instead of allowing illness to define me, I chose to see it as a season that required patience, resilience, and deep trust. Faith helped me remain emotionally steady and mentally focused, even when my body was physically exhausted. It reminded me that challenges do not diminish our purpose, but often clarify it.
This period also taught me humility and gratitude. I learned to accept support, to listen to my body, and to appreciate small victories. Faith helped me understand that perseverance does not always look like pushing forward at full speed; sometimes it means moving forward with grace and determination, one step at a time. Completing my coursework during treatment strengthened my belief in my ability to overcome obstacles with perseverance and hope.
Relying on my faith has shaped the way I approach both my education and my future profession. It has instilled in me compassion, patience, and a deep respect for the resilience of others facing adversity. These qualities guide my desire to serve and support individuals with empathy and understanding. My faith continues to influence my commitment to helping others navigate challenges with dignity and confidence.
Looking back, I recognize that faith did not remove the obstacles I faced, but it gave me the strength to endure them with peace and purpose. This experience continues to guide me as I pursue my educational goals and strive to make a meaningful impact. My faith remains a steady source of strength, reminding me that even in the most difficult seasons, growth, hope, and purpose are possible.
RonranGlee Special Needs Teacher Literary Scholarship
I am passionate about the special education teaching profession because I believe teaching is not simply about delivering content, but about helping students recognize their own presence, value, and ability to exist meaningfully in the world. When Professor Harold Bloom states that “the purpose of teaching is to bring the student to his or her sense of his or her own presence,” I understand this as the process of helping students feel seen, capable, and aware that they matter. For students with special needs, this sense of presence is often challenged by barriers in communication, regulation, and traditional educational structures. My purpose as a special education teacher is to help remove those barriers and guide students toward experiencing themselves as active participants in their own learning and lives.
To me, a student’s “sense of presence” means more than academic success. It means a child feels safe, regulated, and confident enough to engage with others and with the learning environment. It means the student understands, “I am here. I am important. I can make choices, and my voice matters.” Many students with special needs struggle to reach this awareness because their learning differences can make the world feel overwhelming or unresponsive to their needs. As a special education teacher, I see my role as creating structured, predictable, and supportive environments that allow students to access learning while also developing self-awareness and independence.
My passion for special education comes from my deep belief in structure paired with compassion. I have learned that students thrive when routines, visual supports, and clear expectations are consistently in place. These elements are not limitations; they are bridges that help students connect to their own abilities. Through predictable routines, movement, visual schedules, and opportunities for choice, students begin to feel grounded and empowered. They learn to anticipate what comes next, regulate their emotions, and participate with confidence. This is how I guide students toward experiencing their own presence—by creating environments where they can succeed without fear or confusion.
Choice is a critical part of this process. When students are given meaningful, structured choices—such as selecting a song, a story, or an activity—they begin to recognize themselves as decision-makers. Even small choices can have a powerful impact. A child who selects a song during circle time or chooses which story to hear is practicing autonomy, communication, and self-expression. These moments may seem simple, but they are foundational steps toward independence and self-awareness. As a special education teacher, my mission is to intentionally design learning experiences that allow students to practice these skills in safe and supportive ways.
My mission in special education is to guide students toward independence by honoring who they are while helping them grow. I do not believe in forcing students to fit into rigid systems that do not acknowledge their needs. Instead, I believe in adapting instruction, materials, and expectations so students can access learning in ways that respect their strengths and challenges. I strive to be patient, reflective, and responsive, continually adjusting my teaching practices to meet students where they are. Through collaboration with families, colleagues, and support staff, I aim to advocate for inclusive practices that recognize each child’s unique potential.
If I were to describe my journey as a brief fairy tale, I would see myself as a guide rather than a hero who rescues. In this story, I walk alongside students as they navigate a world that often feels too loud, too fast, or too demanding. Along the way, I offer tools—visual supports, routines, encouragement, and consistency—that help them move forward. The true heroes of the story are the students themselves. My role is to light the path just enough for them to see their own strength and presence. Each time a student participates, communicates a need, or confidently makes a choice, the story moves forward toward empowerment and self-discovery.
I am passionate about becoming a special education teacher because I understand that teaching is an act of service, advocacy, and deep human connection. I am committed to continuous learning, reflection, and growth so that I can better serve my students and their families. This scholarship would support my journey toward becoming an educator who not only teaches skills, but also nurtures confidence, dignity, and self-awareness in students who deserve to be recognized for who they are. I am dedicated to helping students discover their own presence and to ensuring they know they belong, they matter, and they are capable of meaningful learning and growth.
