Bio

My ultimate life goal is to become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) and use my career to provide compassionate, high-quality care to patients—especially those who feel unheard or underserved. This dream was inspired by my grandmother, who had type 2 diabetes, was on dialysis, and ultimately lost her leg to a small sore on her toe. Caring for her during that time showed me how important it is for patients to feel supported and understood, and it sparked my passion for healthcare. I’m most passionate about advocating for vulnerable patients and ensuring they feel safe in medical settings. I want to be the kind of provider who listens, educates, and empowers patients and families, especially in critical care settings where fear and uncertainty are high. As a single mother of four, working full time while completing my nursing prerequisites, I understand the value of perseverance, sacrifice, and resilience. These qualities fuel my dedication and have shaped me into someone who doesn’t give up when things get tough. I believe I’m a strong candidate because I bring not only personal experience and empathy, but a clear vision for the future. I’ve learned how to balance responsibilities, manage time, and stay focused under pressure—all while keeping my goal in sight. I plan to use my education not just to build a better life for my children, but to be a provider and role model who makes a real difference in the world.

    This Woman's Worth Scholarship
I believe I am worth the dreams I aspire to achieve because I have walked through the experiences that shaped them. My goal to become a nurse and eventually a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) was not formed out of convenience or idealism—it was born from real-life caregiving, sacrifice, and a desire to serve others through some of the most vulnerable moments in their lives. When I cared for my grandmother, who had type 2 diabetes and was on dialysis before her passing in 2014, I was introduced to the reality of chronic illness and what it means to be a caregiver. Even as a young person, I played a role in her daily care: checking her blood sugar, helping with meals that matched her dietary restrictions, monitoring medications, and making sure she felt safe, seen, and supported. But the most meaningful part of that experience wasn’t the tasks—it was the emotional bond, the trust, and the love that made me realize the power of presence in healing. That’s when I first understood what it truly means to care for someone. Those moments didn’t just inspire me—they shaped me. I learned how to be patient, how to be dependable, and how to navigate difficult situations with compassion and calm. Watching the nurses who cared for my grandmother left a lasting impression on me. They didn’t just provide treatment—they gave us reassurance, dignity, and a sense of hope during a time of uncertainty. That impact has stayed with me ever since, and it’s exactly the kind of impact I want to make in my career. I am currently taking prerequisite courses as I work toward obtaining my Bachelor of Science in Nursing. After graduation, I plan to work bedside for at least a year to gain hands-on experience before applying to a CRNA program. Becoming a CRNA is not only a dream of mine—it’s a commitment. I know this path is challenging, competitive, and requires years of intense dedication. But I also know I have the passion, purpose, and perseverance to see it through. What makes me worth this dream is my understanding of why it matters. I’ve seen firsthand how critical compassionate, skilled healthcare professionals are, especially in high-stakes environments like surgery or critical care. I want to be that steady, trusted presence for patients who are scared or uncertain. I want to combine clinical expertise with human connection, the same way those nurses once did for my grandmother and for me. I have proven that I am resilient. I’ve faced emotional loss, taken on adult responsibilities early in life, and stayed committed to my goals despite challenges. I don’t view this journey as a ladder to climb, but as a purpose to fulfill. This isn’t just a career for me—it’s a calling, and I am ready to give it everything I have. I am worth my dreams because I’ve lived through what gave rise to them, and I am committed to honoring that experience by turning it into something that helps others. My dreams are not just about personal success—they are rooted in compassion, service, and the desire to make a difference in the lives of others. That, I believe, makes them—and me—worth believing in.
    Cariloop’s Caregiver Scholarship
Caregiving has been one of the most formative experiences of my life. I had the privilege of caring for my grandmother, who was a type 2 diabetic and a dialysis patient. She was a strong, loving woman who meant everything to me, and being able to support her in her time of need taught me more than I ever imagined it could. Before her passing in 2014, I helped her manage her health and comfort as best I could. This included checking her blood sugar, ensuring she took her medications, preparing meals that suited her dietary needs, and helping her with mobility around the house. I also accompanied her to appointments when possible and spent time with her during dialysis treatments. Sometimes, the most important thing I could do was just sit with her, hold her hand, and let her know she wasn’t alone. Though I was young at the time, the responsibilities I took on were real, and so was the emotional weight of watching someone I love go through such a difficult health journey. It wasn’t always easy, but it was meaningful. I learned how to show up for someone every day, how to put their needs before my own, and how to find strength in patience, compassion, and love. My caregiving role didn’t stop with daily tasks—it shaped my identity, values, and the direction I want my life to take. Caring for my grandmother opened my eyes to the world of healthcare and the vital role that nurses play in the lives of patients and families. I saw how much of a difference the nurses made in her care—how they were not just skilled professionals, but also sources of comfort, encouragement, and strength. I knew I wanted to be that for someone else one day. This experience lit a fire in me that continues to drive everything I do. I am currently taking prerequisite classes to obtain my Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). After I earn my degree, I plan to work bedside for at least a year to gain hands-on clinical experience. From there, I will apply to a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) program. I am drawn to this advanced role because it allows me to provide critical care during surgical procedures, combining technical expertise with compassionate patient-centered care. My caregiving journey has not only shaped my career goals, but it has also instilled values that I carry with me every day. I’ve learned the importance of empathy, resilience, and presence. I’ve developed a strong work ethic, sharpened my ability to multitask, and gained a deep understanding of what it means to care for someone not just physically, but emotionally. These are the qualities that I will bring with me into nursing and eventually anesthesia. Receiving this scholarship would be a tremendous help in bringing that vision to life. Nursing school is a significant financial investment, and as someone who is working hard to balance school, work, and future clinical responsibilities, financial support would ease the burden and allow me to stay focused on my studies. It would also make it possible for me to continue giving my best to every patient and every class without the added stress of financial insecurity. But this scholarship represents more than just money—it represents acknowledgment. It validates the experience of being a caregiver and recognizes the sacrifices and lessons that come with it. It tells me that my journey, though difficult at times, has value and purpose. With this support, I will continue my education with even more determination and pride, carrying the memory of my grandmother with me as I work toward a career where I can give back in ways that truly matter. Thank you for considering my application and for supporting future nurses like me who are striving to make a difference.
    Noah Jon Markstrom Foundation Scholarship
As a Black woman who grew up in Fort Worth, Texas, I realized that life does not just hand us opportunities for success, but we have to strive for them. I am a single mother of four and a college student at Tarrant County College, where I am pursuing my prerequisites and working as a patient care technician at a children's hospital. Every waking moment is a critical decision between my family and career, as I aim to become an Oncology Nurse or Neonatal Intensive Care Nurse and someday a CRNA. This scholarship would help me break my financial constraints and enable me to complete my education, touch the lives of needy patients, and give my children a better future. My journey has been a hard one as I have experienced a lot of challenges as a single parent, from issues with money to sleepless nights and the pressure of ensuring that my kids are well taken care of. There are days that I want to quit, but to enter a hospital and see children in incubators struggling to live offers a reason to carry on. I understand the pain of fighting, feeling invisible, and being in a situation where you crave support. I want to be a nurse who not only does my job in the medical aspect but also provides compassion and hope to my patients. I usually encourage fearful patients, soothe crying children, and observe young children trying to live with terminal illnesses at such a young age. These experiences have made me realize my interest in pursuing a career in pediatric oncology or neonatal specialization, which are specialties that need highly trained, compassionate practitioners. Nonetheless, I know that becoming a CRNA means that I must get a nursing degree, work in a critical care environment, and pursue further studies. Every stage involves one or several expenses, and given my responsibilities, I cannot secure the necessary funding on my own. Some of the limits to attaining my degree are the financial costs associated with my tuition, and this scholarship would greatly help me meet these financial needs. Between tuition, textbooks, childcare, and basic living expenses, every dollar counts. This means I could scale down my working hours a little, devote more of my time to studies, gain more clinical experience, and ensure that my children's needs do not suffer due to my education. Beyond the monetary aspect, this scholarship would mean much more, as it would be a message that my dreams are worthy, regardless of my status. My vision is to achieve the status of CRNA since this is a professional position that involves patient care and technical knowledge of anesthesia. I desire to work in pediatric surgery and be able to console and take care of children during their most fragile moments. However, apart from my career prospects, I would like to encourage other struggling women, and primarily mothers, that nothing is impossible. I would like them to go through life with the understanding that education is equal to power and sweat and dedication move the world forward. Despite their statuses and standing in society, they can accomplish as much as anyone else. I am asking for an opportunity to show the world that a single mother from Fort Worth, Texas, can go against all the odds and become a leader in the healthcare sector. I am grateful for your consideration of my story. This scholarship is not just a resource for my education but also for the countless individuals I will impact as a nurse and a CRNA.

James Lynn Baker II #BeACoffeeBean Scholarship
I have been trying to fix the needs in my community and take practical steps to try and make it better. These experiences have taught me how even the smallest actions can bring about significant, immense change. By focusing on solution creation, education support, and mental health awareness, I have been able to contribute to the growth and improvement around me. This scholarship will expand my capability to create lasting change. First, I work for a positive impact in making people aware of mental health problems. The World Health Organization reports that mental health problems are among the highest causes of disability in the world, but many individuals with mental health problems do not seek help because of stigma (World Health Organization, 2022). In my community, this stigma has negatively impacted people, leaving them feeling alone and without support. To address this, I worked with a local nonprofit to provide workshops and open forums regarding mental health. These workshops educated and allowed participants to share their experiences in a safe environment. The stigma associated with mental health began to break down, and more people sought the help they needed. They also shared that they felt more confident and informed, thus motivating them to talk about it with others around them. This creates a stronger and more understanding community, leading to lasting positive changes. Another important activity that I engaged in was the improvement of food security in my community. Research has shown that lack of access to healthy food may cause long-term health issues, lower achievements among children in school, and higher levels of stress in families (Precker, 2021). Therefore, I decided to partner with a local food pantry and organize food drives, which included fresh produce distribution to families in need. I have also been involved in the creation of awareness on the need for healthy eating through workshops on meal preparation on a low budget. This kind of work brings immediate relief and empowers families to make healthier choices. I have also worked towards combating the educational gap in my community. According to research, a lack of access to resources and personalized learning support often troubles students from underprivileged communities and may hinder academic success (Harms & Garrett-Ruffin, 2023). I started tutoring sessions on mathematics and English with children in my neighborhood. Through this continuous support, students improved their academic performance and gradually gained confidence. With time, I found them getting more participatory and enthusiastic, encouraging their parents to show more interest in their studies. This has positively impacted individual academic improvements and created an atmosphere where even learning and collaboration within the community have been inspired. By filling up the gap in their educations, I was able to bring hope and make them feel the positive change that accessible support and guidance can create. Looking ahead, I realize that furthering my education will enable me to make an even greater difference. The skills and knowledge I will achieve through further study will enable me to address my community's various challenges more comprehensively and effectively. This learning represents a significant step toward reaching that goal, as it will allow me to expand my abilities and further contribute to the growth and well-being of the people around me. I am committed to actively creating positive change in my community through my actions and my continued education. By making changes in the environment, providing educational support, advocating for mental health, and being kind daily, I have seen how even little things can make a great difference. With this scholarship, I can keep creating an impact and strive for better.
