I am pursuing electrical engineering because I find the complexity interesting. Electrical Engineering is one of the harder engineering disciplines that is dominated by majority of white men, so as a LGBT+ person of color being able to represent diversity and pursue a career that systematic boundaries are supposed to keep me from pursuing feel empowering to me. I know that if I can get into the industry and do well it will show members of my community that they could also pursue careers that are difficult and have exclusionist nature. I want to break down social boundaries and show that your race and identity should not be discriminated against and that anyone can pursue any career they desire.
In the engineering environment I have had to face obstacles in obtaining my education. While in high school I took a dual enrollment Engineering101 class at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. In the class I was the only person of color and the only woman. The males in the class would treat me like I was stupid and would never take me seriously to try and get me to drop the class. This was a wakeup call for me and showed me how industries that are dominated by white men are and how they treat people they consider outsiders. Although this was very demeaning to me, I continued to persevere. I knew that if I let them win it would make things worse for me and other people of color in the industry. I continued to do the best in the class as I could to show them, I could be respected and that I would not let them get to me and get their way.
Although I have gone through obstacles in engineering, I still have decided to continue my education at the University of Florida for electrical engineering. I have gone through discrimination, but they could not scare me away from what I am truly passionate about. I find electrical engineering so fascinating, and I enjoy creating circuits. This makes it easier to keep going though discrimination because of how much I genuinely enjoy the material.
Diversity in the workplace is important to me because it allows for a wide perspective and an accepting atmosphere when working in a diverse workplace. I want to work in an atmosphere that respects everyone comes from different background and listens to everyone’s thoughts. This helps foster a healthy work environment, which leads to better mental moral and physical health. In my career field there are not many people of color, however, this will not desire me because I want to break boundaries and be an example for other people to pursue whatever career they are passionate about.
