Peter Aguilera

Bio

Aloha, my name is Peter Aguilera. I am from Miami, Florida. My parents immigrated from Cuba to Miami before I was born and struggled to give my 3 other siblings and I a decent life as we grew up. I was the youngest in the family, and I owe a lot to my parents and the sacrifices they made for us. However, as I grew up and saw the future my siblings were building for themselves, I knew if I stayed home, I would not be able to attain the bold future I am giving my all to achieve. I am currently studying Computer Science at Hawaii Pacific University. I am incredibly far away from home and am working hard to be able to pay off my college tuition with no financial help at all from my parents. As an old Viking saying went "If you want to take the land, burn the boats." I've burned my boats and will now stop at nothing to survive this difficult environment I have thrown myself into. I will use this fire to reforge myself, and fight for even the smallest advantage I can get on the way to the top. I am the best candidate for a scholarship because I will use what I learn in and outside of school to not only help myself, but help others around me get to where they want to be. I am most passionate about helping others. I have been helped tremendously on the path of life, and plan to return those sentiments tenfold by striving for greatness alongside those beside me. I plan to use my education and worth to contribute in and out of my area of expertise in computer science projects, with the goal of propelling the world into a new age of technology able to solve illness and disability.

Even as a baby, I genuinely loved math as I was chewing on my large multiplication table. I know that might sound weird at first, but one of the only gifts my mother ever got for me was this huge plastic multiplication table when I was 4 years old that had all types of little animals showing me how to multiply on it, and I would just spend hours at a time slowly memorizing the entire table. This helped build both my memory and math skills at a very young age, and from that point on I was always fascinated by math. From that point on, math came very naturally to me in school, but that is far from the reason why I loved it so much. Instead, I began to love math because it did not come naturally to most other people. This was a selfish reason at first, however, I was a child, and it did make me feel a sense of accomplishment that I could do something so easily that others struggled with. This quickly backfired on me as I was forced to realize that society does not act kind to outliers. This was undoubtedly a harsh life lesson to learn at such a young age, but one I had to face regardless. Instead, I learned to use my skills for the benefit of those around me, not just myself, and I genuinely found a new love for math. The love of helping others in math is much greater than just a simple love for math. I would do my best to help in class, and if there was not enough time, I would stay with them after class or show up to the tutoring sessions to help out whoever was in need. Even with difficult language barriers, the language of math will always be spoken by all and allowed us to bypass the setbacks with language when I was trying to tutor others. I love math because of its difficulty. As one of the most difficult subjects, I have seen it band people around me together as a collective force. Even now in university in my freshman year, I work together with my upperclassmen to create solutions in Linear Algebra that none of us could've thought of separately. I will continue to apply these lessons to take leadership into the future and lead bold people together.
