Brandon Edreff Memorial Gearshift Scholarship
My name is Owen Humphrey and I am a high school senior attending Wells high school in Wells, New York. I grew up in a small town with my aunt and uncle. My graduating class only has seventeen people in it, and the whole elementary through high school only has one hundred and thirty kids In it. I enjoy playing basketball, soccer hanging out with my friends, and being outside where I live in the beautiful Adirondack park.
Me and my two brothers were raised by my aunt and uncle since my older brother was six, I was three, and my younger brother being less than a year old. Shortly before we moved in my mother had been working very long hours as a nurse in a local hospital. On her way home from work one day she fell asleep behind the wheel and lost control of her vehicle. She ended up passing shortly after. While I was still very young when she passed I have always wanted to know as much as possible about her. I ask all of my relatives about her and they all have told me different funny stories about her and what she was like as a person. My aunt loved her very much and always told me that she was one of the sweetest, and hardest working people she had ever met. My mom became a nurse and raised three boys up until she passed. She basically us by herself because my father was no help. After this, my brothers and my dad moved in with my aunt and uncle. Within that same month my dad left in the middle of the night and my aunt and uncle were left to raise us. In 2022 we received a call that my father had been found dead from an overdose in his apartment. My father was a heroin addict and chose needles over his three sons. He forced my mom to work long shifts so he could sit home and get high. There was not a single apology or letter or phone call over the eleven year span from when he left, to when he died. When we received that call it changed my life. The call made reminded me of what kind of a person ,and it taught me what not to be like when I raise my own kids.
If awarded this scholarship I would use it to pursue a higher education. I have been accepted to SUNY Broome in Binghamton ,NY for their electrical technology program. I am pursing higher education because I want to give back to my aunt and uncle as much as I can. They are some of the most selfless, morally sound people I have ever met. My uncle worked for the Village of Speculator for thirty eight and a half years before retiring a little over a year ago ,and my aunt is still working. When I get a high paying job I am going to make sure that my parents never have to worry about money again.
Overcoming Adversity - Jack Terry Memorial Scholarship
What inspires me about Jack Terry's story is his ability to be able to go through such a world changing tragedy ,and still not giving up. Despite losing his entire family in the Holocaust and being sent to three concentration camps ,he still became very successful in his life. He learned English and went on to become a geological engineer. Mr. Terry's story inspires me and makes me feel like I have no excuse to not work my hardest and achieve my dreams.
Growing up me and my two brothers lived with my aunt and uncle after a fatal car crash that killed my mother. Within the same month my father walked out on his three boys ,and we didn't hear from him at all for over eleven years. when we finally heard something about him it was a call from a coroners office saying that he was found by his roommate dead from a heroin overdose. These events have shaped me as a person ,and I can say that I learned from a very important lesson. I believe that these events made me appreciate the people that are here when they are here. I learned to love people and to spend as much time as you can with them because you never know when that is the last time you will see them.
I have been accepted to SUNY Broome for their two year electrical technology program. The career outlook for this would me be able to become an electrical technician. Upon receiving the acceptance letter I was excited ,but also very worried. I have always been told when I was younger by my aunt and uncle that if I cannot pay for college without taking out a loan I probably would not be able to attend. I know my parents would help me pay if they could ,but they are just not able to. My uncle is now retired after working for thirty eight and a half years ,and my aunt is still working to help support my family. My goal is to pursue higher education to secure a high paying job. I want my aunt to not have to work and my parents to not have to worry about money again. Although they will say different, I owe my aunt and uncle the world and my overall goal is to be able to help them as much as I possibly can. I want to say I'm thankful for the opportunity to apply to this scholarship and I am looking forward to a response.
Uniball's Skilled Trades Scholarship
Winner1. My name is Owen Humphrey and I am a senior attending Wells high school. I am pursuing the career of becoming an electrical technician. I am passionate about this career choice because I have a high respect for people who work in the trades. growing up I was always taught the importance of building a reputation for being a hard worker ,and building a name for yourself.
2. My plan for after my trade education is to achieve a high paying job to be able to support my family. This is so important to me because I have grown up seeing both my aunt and uncle get up every morning for work ,and still see them do so. My uncle is now retired after working thirty eight and a half years ,but my aunt still gets up everyday to go to work. Me and my two brothers moved in with my aunt and uncle fourteen years ago following a fatal car crash that killed my mother ,and injured my infant brother who was also in the car. Me my two brothers and my dad moved in with my aunt and uncle after this happened ,but my dad walked out on us within the same month. While I know that my aunt and uncle love me and my brothers ,I also sometimes feel like I was a financial burden of sorts that made them work until they were in their retirement years. I want to be able to secure a respected high paying trade job to make sure my parents never have to worry about working again.
3. A time I overcame adversity would be a couple of years ago when my dad passed away. Like I said before my dad walked out on his three boys when we were six, three, and less than a year old. We had not heard from him at all for over eleven years until we got a call from somewhere in Texas letting us know that he had been found overdosed by his roommate in his apartment. They told us not to worry and they would send all of his belongings in the mail. All he had to his name was a pair of glasses and a Bic lighter. This was a hard time for me because growing up I had always wondered what I had done to not be wanted by my father. I would always sit up at night wondering why I wasn't good enough for him. It took me a long time to realize that some people you can just be the best person you can be and they will still not like you or not want you for some reason. It taught me to be the best person I can possibly be and to treat people good because you never know what they are going through on their own.
I just wanted to also say how grateful I am to be able to be able to apply to this scholarship ,and I am looking forward to hearing back.
Koehler Family Trades and Engineering Scholarship
When I was younger the value of good work ethic and helping people was instilled in me. My uncle, who I grew up with worked for the highway department for thirty eight and a half years. He got up every morning at 5:30 to check roads and make sure it was safe for people to ride in their vehicles safely. My uncle is now retired ,but my aunt is still working. My aunt has been working ever since she was old enough to and has not stopped yet. She has always gotten up everyday to go and support her biological kids and then me and my two brothers. She has never made me or my brothers feel like we are financial burdens and she loves us as if we were her own children. even though I know finances worry her and my uncle, they always try their best to make us feel appreciated and spoiled. When I think about my aunt having to work still it makes me upset and makes me want to help her out as much as I can. I know the best way I can help her is to work hard in school to get a good degree and a high paying job.
I'm passionate about pursuing a degree in the trades because I am a hard worker and I have a high level of respect for people in such a hard area of work. I have worked full time since I was thirteen years old and I have always had multiple jobs at the same time. I currently I have 3 part time jobs during the school year ,and I have two part time a one full time job during the summer. before my mother passed away she was a nurse for a local hospital ,and she was always working long hours to support me and my brothers and my dad. After she passed my dad walked out on me and my brothers. Ever since then I have made it a goal to make my aunt and uncle proud of me as well as being able to retire them so that they never have to work again or worry about expenses.
I have been accepted to SUNY Broome in Binghamton ,NY for their electrical technology program. For career outlooks I am planning on using the degree I earn to become an electrical technician. I am grateful for the opportunity to apply to this scholarship.
Frederick J. Salone Memorial Basketball Scholarship
Growing up I have always played basketball. I started by playing out on our little side street that I grew up on with my older brother ,and then later when my younger brother was old enough. After that I played modified basketball from the earliest year that it was available to 8th grade. My whole four years of high school I played basketball. My freshman year I needed a lot of improvement ,so I didn't get that much playing time. Because of the way my freshman year ended I was determined to lock in and become better for myself ,and to become the most help for my team that I could be. the next season I became a starter and have contributed greatly to the team. My sophomore season I won most improved and going into my junior season I improved even further. After my junior season I won most improved again as well as winning tournament MVP for the tournament that My school hosted. This year I have improved more ,and my goal is to contribute however possible to help my team win a sectional championship.
While basketball is my escape, there has still been things that I have had to overcome. My mother passed away when I was three and my dad walked out shortly after. Ever since my dad walked out on me and my brothers I have always felt like I have to prove my worth to everyone I come across. It has helped me become a better basketball player ,but it has also had an effect on my mental health. I lost my grandfather and grandmother both within the last 2 years ,and I've had to learn how to cope with it and still appear strong to teammates, peers, and teachers.
Basketball has taught me so much more than I ever thought was possible. Basketball has taught me the importance of communication whether it be to tell your team where to set up on a play ,or to ask for help when you need it. Growing up ,and even still, I have never been good at communicating how I feel or been good at expressing myself. Basketball helped me become more open to talking to people and expressing myself. Basketball has also taught me how important it is to have a strong work ethic. Its very important to learn a strong work ethic at such a young age. This will help me when I go to college and I'm not going to want to do work sometimes.
If awarded this scholarship It would greatly help me and my family by lowering the cost that we would need to pay for my schooling. I have been accepted into SUNY Broome in Binghamton, NY for their electrical technology program to eventually become an electrical technician. I'm grateful for the opportunity to be able to apply to this scholarship and am hopeful for the future.
Aserina Hill Memorial Scholarship
My name is Owen Humphrey and I am a high school senior that is attending Wells High school in Wells New York. ever since I was younger my aunt and uncle, whom I live with, have always instilled in me the importance of going to college and being able to obtain a degree.
My high-school has 130 students pre-k through 12th grade and my graduating class has 17. I am a member of the National Honor society, Athletic Association, Students against Destructive Decisions organization, International club, Yearbook club, Varsity Soccer Team, and Varsity Basketball team. Being a member of the national honor society we participate in many community activities such as blood drives and food drives. we organize and host blood drives with the red cross and as well as hosting and organizing food drives to help families in need. being a part of the Students Against Destructive Decisions club we host presentations and assemblies against drunk driving. My plans after graduating high school are to attend SUNY Broome for their electronic maintenance program to eventually become an electrical technician.
If I were to start my own charity I would choose the same path as this organization. without financial assistance many people, including myself, would not be able to attend colleges. while there are many resources to help people, I still think there are too many people not attending college because they believe they cannot afford it. Growing up my mother passed away when I was three years old so me and my two brothers moved in with my aunt and uncle. A couple months after my mother passed away my dad left us in the middle of the night. In 2022 we received a phone call that My dad was found overdosed in an apartment building in Texas. My aunt and uncle became my parents and have taught me all of my important life lessons and skills as well as helped shape the person that I am today. My uncle was not able to go to college because of his financial situation having to raise his first two kids. My aunt went to college but was not able to finish her degree due to the same financial situations. I want to go to college to not only make my parents proud ,but also to be able to provide for them the way that they did for me when I needed it. Going to college is one of the best ways to secure a higher paying job to be able to unburden your family from financial stress. My uncle is retired but my aunt still works and is not able to retire because of the financial situation we are in. I want my aunt to be able to retire and my parents to never have to worry about money again.
