Bio

I was born in Kenya to Somali Bantu parents who fled the war in Somalia. My parents never got the chance to go to school. They left everything behind so their kids could have a shot at education and a safer life. We came to America to make that real. Growing up, I carried both stories with me: where my family came from, and what they sacrificed to get us here. That’s why I don’t take opportunity lightly. I’m working to become an FAA-certified A&P mechanic because I want to build skills that matter and create something lasting. My long-term goals are to own a hotel, run restaurants, and one day have my own private airport. Everything I do is connected to my parents’ decision to leave home for a better future. I’m here to finish what they started.

      Joe Gilroy "Plan Your Work, Work Your Plan" Scholarship
      I have always been fascinated by what keeps things in the air. When a plane flies over, most people look up. I listen. I think about the engines, the hydraulics, and the person on the ground who signed his name to say that aircraft was safe to fly. I want to be that person. My goal is to become an FAA Certified Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic. To me, an A&P is more than a trade. It is a responsibility. That signature in the logbook means every passenger is trusting your work. I want a career that demands that level of skill and integrity. My long-term goal is to earn my A&P license within the next 24 months, gain experience in a Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul shop, and eventually specialize in turbine engines and earn my Inspection Authorization. My plan is broken into three phases. Phase one is education. I will enroll in an FAA Part 147 certified A&P program, which runs 18 to 19 months full-time. It is divided into General, Airframe, and Powerplant. In General I will learn regulations, math, and maintenance paperwork. In Airframe I will learn sheet metal, composites, electrical, and landing gear systems. In Powerplant I will learn reciprocating and turbine engines, propellers, and ignition systems. My schedule will be 30+ hours a week in class and lab, with nights dedicated to studying. Phase two is certification. School alone does not make you an A&P, the FAA does. I plan to take my three FAA written exams during school, not after. After graduation I will take my oral and practical exams with a Designated Mechanic Examiner. My goal is to befully licensed by month 21. Phase three is working the plan. The industry is currently short thousands of mechanics. I am not chasing the highest starting pay, I am chasing the best experience. I plan to work under senior mechanics for my first two to three years in general aviation or at a regional airline in the Nashville area, learning how to do logbook entries correctly and becoming someone other mechanics can trust. I have planned for the resources and budget because this is an investment. My resources will be my Part 147 school and its instructors, FAA handbooks and FARs, test prep materials, and mentorship from working A&Ps I can shadow on weekends. Financially, tuition for a good program is $33,500 to $45,000 and usually includes books and written tests. I also need $2,000 to $3,500 for my own professional tool set, $1,575 to $2,700 for the oral and practical exam fees paid directly to the examiner, and living expenses while in school. The total investment is about $38,000 to $50,000. I will cover it through part-time work, federal aid, and employer tuition assistance programs. This scholarship would allow me to work fewer hours outside of school and focus on passing my exams the first time.A good plan also considers what can go wrong. If I face a financial setback, I will not quit. My contingency is to work full-time in aviation parts or as an apprentice while saving to finish. If I fail a section of my exams, I have budgeted a $1,000 contingency for retakes and will retest within two weeks. If airline hiring slows, an A&P is still valuable in corporate aviation, helicopters, and general aviation shops, so I will have options. I am also keeping my background and driving record clean, because you need to pass a federal background check to get an airport badge.I want to be an A&P because I want to do work that matters.

      I didn't grow up around airplanes. I didn't have a pilot in the family or build model jets as a kid. I fell into aviation by accident. At 20, I needed a job and took one as a ramp agent. Honestly, at first it was just a job. Early mornings, freezing cold on the tarmac in the winter, sweating through my shirt in the summer, ears ringing after a push. But then something changed. You spend enough time that close to an airplane and you start to really see it. You watch a 737 that you just helped load, with 150 strangers on it, families, business travelers, kids going to see grandparents, lumber down the runway and just... leave the ground. Every single time it felt impossible. Every single time I got chills. I fell in love with that moment. The takeoff. The pure power of it, but also the trust in it. All those people on board have no idea who I am, who loaded their bags, who chocked the wheels, who de-iced the wing. They just trust that the aircraft is going to do its job. That trust hit me hard. Working the ramp, you learn that an airplane is not magic. It's work. It's a thousand small, important things that have to be right. I started asking questions. Why are we waiting on maintenance? What does that light mean? What are they looking at under there? The mechanics who would come out to the plane didn't just fix things, they knew the airplane. They could listen to it, feel it, diagnose it. I wanted to be that person. I realized I didn't want to just watch planes take off anymore. I wanted to be part of the reason they can take off safely. That's what inspired me to pursue aviation maintenance. It's not just about wrenches and wires. It's about responsibility. When that plane leaves my hands, I want to know in my gut that I did everything right. That every bolt is torqued, every inspection is signed off, every system is good to go. Because at 35,000 feet, there's no pulling over. Some people see a plane and see a machine. I see 150 lives, and a promise that they'll get home. I went from throwing bags to wanting to hold that promise in my hands. That's why I'm here.

      I chose a vocational school because aviation maintenance is a trade that lives on the hangar floor, not just in a textbook. From the moment I first got close to an aircraft, I realized I learn best when my hands are on the work. I need to see how a hydraulic system actually routes, feel the torque on a fastener, hear the difference in an engine during a run-up, and troubleshoot a fault with a multimeter in real time. A vocational A&P program is built for that kind of learning. Every day in class means time on real airframes, engines, avionics, and composite structures. That direct exposure is the fastest way to build the judgment and muscle memory this field demands. Time and focus mattered to me. A traditional four-year degree would have meant years of general education classes that don’t move me closer to signing off an aircraft. I didn’t want to spend time and tuition on coursework I won’t use. I wanted a direct path to the FAA Airframe and Powerplant license. Vocational school gives me that. The curriculum is structured around the FAA requirements, so each lab, lecture, and exam builds toward the exact certifications airlines and MROs require. I can enter the workforce faster with skills that are immediately useful, and I can start building seniority, experience, and income sooner. Cost and return were also major factors. The debt load from a four-year university did not make sense when the end goal is a skilled, licensed trade. Vocational programs are streamlined, so I’m not paying for semesters of unrelated courses. I’m investing in equipment training, safety procedures, and the specific knowledge the FAA tests. That means a better return on investment and less financial pressure while I’m starting out. I plan to work for one of the big three U.S. airlines, American, Delta, or United, and they care about one thing above all: can you do the work safely, legally, and to standard. An A&P certificate from a respected vocational program proves that. The culture of a vocational school fits me, too. I’m surrounded by instructors who have actually worked the line, pulled night shifts during heavy checks, and signed 337s. They teach from experience, not just theory. My classmates are there for the same reason I am. We all want to turn wrenches, solve problems, and keep aircraft safe. That environment pushes me to meet high standards because the stakes are real. A missed step in class becomes a safety lesson, not just a lost grade. Choosing vocational school was choosing competence over credentials. I want to be the technician who can be trusted with a flight-critical system at 2 a.m. before a 6 a.m. departure. The fastest, most direct way to become that person is through focused, hands-on training. That is why I chose vocational school, and why I know it is the right path to a career maintaining the aircraft that connect people every day.
