My ultimate goal is to become a professor and researcher in computational social sciences. I am passionate about understanding how human behavior intersects with data to address societal challenges. This passion stems from my academic journey, beginning with an M.A. in Anthropology from Northern Arizona University, where I explored cultural dynamics and human connections. My work as a Research Associate further honed my skills in analysis and critical thinking.
Currently, I am pursuing a Master’s in Social Data Science at Arizona State University to combine my anthropological insights with advanced data-driven techniques. This program aligns perfectly with my aspiration to bridge the gap between data science and social sciences, enabling innovative solutions to complex problems.
What makes me a great candidate is my resilience and determination. Losing my father and brother in 2020 deeply impacted me, but it also motivated me to excel in their honor. These experiences have instilled in me a sense of purpose, perseverance, and a commitment to achieving my dreams. I am eager to use my education not only to advance knowledge but to inspire others facing adversity. This scholarship will be pivotal in supporting my journey toward making a meaningful impact.

Adversity has been a defining force in my life, shaping my academic and personal journey in profound ways. In 2020, I experienced the unimaginable loss of both my father and my brother. Their passing left a void that seemed insurmountable, but it also ignited a drive within me to persevere and honor their memories by pursuing my education and aspirations with relentless determination. This tragedy became a pivotal moment in my life, motivating me to overcome obstacles and transform grief into a source of strength.
My academic journey reflects this resilience. I earned my M.A. in Anthropology from Northern Arizona University in 2023, where I explored the complexities of human culture and societal systems. However, I realized that the challenges of the modern world required more than traditional anthropological methods. This led me to pursue a Master’s in Social Data Science at Arizona State University, where I am integrating data science techniques with social theory to address pressing issues. My passion lies at the intersection of technology and humanity, and my ultimate goal is to pursue a Ph.D. in Computational Social Sciences to contribute solutions to global challenges like climate change and inequality.
I am passionate about using computational tools to uncover patterns in human behavior, model societal systems, and address real-world problems. For example, my current research involves analyzing digital communication during crises, a project that has shown me the potential of data science to improve emergency responses and public policy. These experiences have reinforced my belief that STEM fields, particularly computational sciences, hold the key to unlocking solutions for the future.
Financially, the pursuit of higher education has not been without its challenges. As someone who relocated to the United States on a scholarship, I have worked diligently to manage my expenses while focusing on my studies. The loss of my family’s financial and emotional support has added layers of complexity to my journey. Scholarships like this one are vital not only for easing financial burdens but also for empowering students like me to achieve their goals without compromise.
This scholarship will allow me to fully dedicate myself to my studies and research, enabling me to develop innovative solutions that bridge STEM and social sciences. It would support my dream of becoming a professor, where I can mentor the next generation of STEM scholars and inspire others to pursue knowledge despite adversity. With this support, I aim to honor my father and brother’s legacies by contributing to a brighter and more equitable future.

Understanding the universe through the lens of social data science is not only about decoding patterns in data but also about exploring how humanity interacts with and interprets the world around us. My academic journey—rooted in anthropology and now advancing through social data science—has taught me that human behavior, culture, and technological systems are vital components in this exploration. To understand the universe is to understand the relationships within it, from the dynamics of human societies to the broader ecosystems we inhabit.
With an M.A. in Anthropology from Northern Arizona University, I gained a foundation in studying human culture, systems of belief, and the histories that shape societies. Anthropology instilled in me a perspective that values context, interconnectedness, and a deep understanding of human diversity. Transitioning to social data science at Arizona State University, I now aim to bridge that anthropological insight with computational tools, enabling me to examine the complexities of human systems at scale. This interdisciplinary approach allows me to explore both the micro-level intricacies of individual interactions and the macro-level patterns that shape societies globally.
Social data science provides a powerful toolkit for understanding the nature of our universe. It combines data analysis, machine learning, and systems thinking to uncover hidden connections in human behavior, cultural evolution, and societal organization. By applying these tools, I hope to contribute to a holistic understanding of the universe—one that integrates the human experience as a fundamental aspect of its study. For instance, using computational methods, we can identify patterns in how societies adapt to environmental changes, how networks of communication evolve, and how cultural practices influence innovation. These insights not only enrich our understanding of the universe but also empower us to address pressing challenges such as climate change, inequality, and social fragmentation.
Losing my father and brother in 2020 profoundly shaped my drive to pursue these goals. Their loss taught me the importance of resilience and gave me a deeper appreciation for the interconnectedness of life. It inspired me to aim high and contribute to meaningful work that honors their memory. Through my academic and professional pursuits, I seek to uncover truths about our shared existence, using data as a tool to bridge human experiences and universal principles.
This scholarship represents a crucial opportunity to support my journey as I continue to explore the intersection of anthropology, data science, and computational methodologies. With the support of this scholarship, I will be better positioned to contribute to the scientific community’s understanding of our universe and, ultimately, to inspire others to seek knowledge that benefits human societies.
Eden Alaine Memorial Scholarship
In 2020, I lost both my father and brother—two people who were very important to my life. Their deaths became a turning point in my life. Their passing left a void that could never be filled, but it also motivated me to honour their memories by striving for excellence and building a meaningful future.
The passing of my father and brother taught me the fragility of life and the significance of making every moment count. At first, my grief was insurmountable and was too much to bear, as I no longer appreciated life and questioned the reason to go on. With time, my grief gradually transformed into a source of strength, and I came to the realization to set higher goals and standards, and hence, the achievement of these goals honors my brother and father's legacies.
In 2021, I was awarded a scholarship to pursue my masters in anthropology at Northern Arizona University. This was an opportunity to rise above my personal tragedy. As I delved deeper into understanding human cultures, I discovered the power of education and research. After graduating in 2023, I have been working as a research associate for Northern Arizona University. I moved to the US in 2021 upon receiving my graduate scholarship. Coming from Ghana, West Africa, I do understand the importance of assistance or aid in achieving and realizing one's dream. My current work responsibilities have developed a keen interest in me in which I am interested in using social data to answer compelling questions and influence policy changes. It is from this interest that I have accepted to pursue Social Data Science at Arizona State University. This master's program brings me closer to my ultimate goal of earning a PhD in computational social sciences and becoming a professor.
The loss of my father and brother remains a profound influence on my life. It reminds me daily of the resilience I possess and the importance of perseverance in the face of adversity. Their memories fuel my determination to succeed, to contribute meaningfully to society, and to support others facing similar challenges.
This scholarship represents more than financial aid. It signifies the strength and ambition my loss has instilled in me. I am committed to continuing my education and realizing my goal of becoming a professor. I feel the absence of my brother and father every day; however, this inspires me to remain focused on my goals.
