There was a point in my academic journey when I genuinely believed I had fallen too far behind to recover. During my research experience at Hofstra University, where I worked alongside a scientist on an academic project, I found myself facing a level of academic and personal pressure I had not anticipated. At first, I was excited and fully committed to the work. However, as my responsibilities increased, I began struggling to balance school, research, and personal obligations. My organization slipped, deadlines passed, and I slowly fell behind on tasks that required consistency and focus. Eventually, I reached a breaking point where I considered giving up entirely. In that moment, I told myself that I had failed and that stepping away would be easier than trying to fix what I had fallen behind on. The thought of catching up felt overwhelming, and I questioned whether I truly belonged in such a demanding academic environment. But instead of quitting, I made the decision to confront the situation directly. The first strategy I used was honesty and communication. I reached out to the physician I was working with and explained that I was struggling to keep up. That conversation became a turning point. Instead of judgment, I received guidance. She reminded me that research is not built on perfection it is built on persistence, correction, and growth over time. From that moment forward, I had to rebuild my approach completely. The first skill I developed was time management through restructuring. Instead of trying to catch up all at once, I broke my responsibilities into smaller, manageable tasks. I created daily and weekly goals rather than focusing on the full weight of what I had missed. This helped reduce overwhelm and gave me a sense of measurable progress. The second strategy was prioritization and focus control. I learned to distinguish between urgent tasks and those that could be paced over time. I began organizing my workload based on deadlines and importance, rather than emotional pressure. This allowed me to regain control instead of reacting to stress. The third and most important technique was mindset correction. I had to unlearn the idea that falling behind meant failure. Instead, I reframed setbacks as part of the process. My mentor reinforced this by teaching me that imperfection is expected in any meaningful work, and what matters most is consistency after disruption. Over time, these changes allowed me to catch up on my responsibilities and contribute meaningfully to the research again. More importantly, I did not just recover academically I developed resilience, discipline, and self-awareness that I continue to carry into every aspect of my education. This experience also deepened my commitment to nursing. In healthcare, situations are rarely perfect or predictable. Patients do not always follow ideal timelines, and care often requires adaptability under pressure. The same skills I developed organization, communication, and persistence are essential in clinical environments where responsibility and clarity matter under stress. Looking back, what once felt like a personal failure became one of the most transformative experiences of my academic life. It taught me that success is not defined by never falling behind, but by how effectively you rebuild when you do. I did not achieve greatness by avoiding hardship. I achieved it by learning how to move through it.

Being a college-bound student in an immigrant family means carrying both opportunity and responsibility at the same time. After moving from Nigeria to New York City, my family and I had to adjust quickly to a new environment, new systems, and new expectations. My parents worked hard to build stability, often navigating unfamiliar systems without guidance. Watching them do this made me understand, at a young age, that success would not come from opportunity alone, but from persistence and adaptability. As I grew older, I began to recognize the weight of being one of the first in my family to pursue higher education in the United States. There was no clear roadmap, no one to explain financial aid, scholarships, or the college process. I had to learn how to navigate these systems largely on my own, often through trial and error. While this was challenging, it taught me independence, resourcefulness, and the importance of advocating for myself. At the same time, my own health challenges shaped my understanding of the healthcare system. After being hospitalized for nearly two months as a child, I experienced firsthand how vulnerable it feels to rely on others for care. That experience, combined with my family’s transition as immigrants, made me aware of how confusing and inaccessible healthcare can feel, especially for those who are unfamiliar with the system. Rather than allowing these challenges to discourage me, I used them as motivation to seek knowledge and create impact. I conducted research alongside a physician at Hofstra University, studying how self-care practices influence the self-esteem of high school students. This experience showed me that health is not only physical, but also shaped by environment, education, and support systems. I also worked in Assemblywoman Michaelle C. Solages’s office, where I interacted with individuals from diverse backgrounds who were seeking assistance. Many of them, like my family, were navigating complex systems without clear guidance. Through this role, I learned how important it is to not only provide resources, but to ensure that people understand and feel empowered to use them. These experiences have shaped my goal of becoming a nurse who bridges the gap between healthcare and the communities that need it most. I want to work with underserved populations, particularly immigrant families, who may face barriers such as language, lack of access, or uncertainty about the healthcare system. By combining my personal experiences with my education, I hope to provide care that is not only clinically effective, but also culturally aware and accessible. Being a college-bound student in an immigrant family has taught me that success is not just personal it is collective. My education is not only an opportunity for me, but a way to uplift my family and contribute to my community. Through nursing, I plan to make a positive impact by ensuring that others feel seen, understood, and supported, no matter their background. My journey has shown me what it feels like to navigate uncertainty, and because of that, I am committed to becoming someone who helps others find clarity, care, and confidence in systems that once felt overwhelming to me.

My journey into healthcare began long before I understood what a career path was. It began with uncertainty, transition, and the challenge of navigating a new environment while trying to understand my own health. After immigrating from Nigeria to New York City, my family and I settled into a small, worn-down apartment where I began experiencing frequent health issues. At a young age, I did not have the words to describe what I was going through, but I understood what it felt like to be uncomfortable, confused, and often unheard. That experience became even more significant when I was hospitalized for nearly two months at the age of seven. Being in the hospital at such a young age was overwhelming. The unfamiliar environment, constant procedures, and sense of isolation made it difficult to feel at ease. However, during that time, I encountered a nurse who changed my perspective entirely. She took the time to explain what was happening, comfort me when I was afraid, and treat me as more than just a patient. Through her actions, I learned that healthcare is not only about treating illness it is about creating a sense of safety and dignity for those who are most vulnerable. As I grew older, I carried that understanding with me, but I also began to question the broader factors that influenced health. My early experiences with illness, combined with my transition between cultures, made me aware of how environment, access, and education can shape well-being. This curiosity led me to pursue research alongside a physician at Hofstra University, where I studied how self-care practices influence the self-esteem of high school students. Through this work, I saw how small, intentional habits and supportive environments could significantly impact mental and emotional health. In addition to research, I sought opportunities to engage directly with my community. Working as a receptionist in Assemblywoman Michaelle C. Solages’s office allowed me to interact with individuals from diverse backgrounds and observe the challenges many face when accessing resources. I learned that making a positive impact often begins with listening, guiding, and ensuring that people feel supported in moments of uncertainty. These experiences have shaped my goal of becoming a nurse who provides both clinical care and meaningful human connection. I want to work in communities where access to healthcare is limited and where patients may feel overlooked or unheard. By combining my personal experiences with my academic background, I aim to advocate for patients, educate individuals on preventative care, and contribute to a healthcare system that prioritizes both physical and emotional well-being. The adversity I have faced adjusting to a new country, managing health challenges, and navigating financial limitations has not defined me, but it has strengthened my sense of purpose. It has taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of empathy. Rather than allowing those challenges to limit me, I have used them as motivation to pursue opportunities that will allow me to grow and give back. Ultimately, my goal is to make a positive impact by being a healthcare professional who sees beyond symptoms and understands the full context of a patient’s life. I want to ensure that others, especially those who feel unseen, receive the care, respect, and compassion they deserve. Through nursing, I hope to turn my experiences into meaningful action and contribute to a more equitable and compassionate healthcare system.

Kindness in Action- Kindness, to me, is not always grand or visible it is often found in small, intentional moments. While working as a receptionist in a local community office, I interacted daily with individuals seeking assistance, many of whom were frustrated, overwhelmed, or unsure of where to turn. One moment that stayed with me involved an elderly woman who came in visibly distressed. She was trying to access healthcare resources but was confused by the paperwork and had been turned away elsewhere. Although my role was primarily administrative, I chose to go beyond simply directing her. I sat with her, carefully walked through each document, and explained the process step by step. When she became overwhelmed, I reassured her and slowed down, making sure she felt supported rather than rushed. By the end of our conversation, her demeanor had completely changed. She thanked me repeatedly, not just for helping her complete the forms, but for taking the time to treat her with patience and respect. That moment was important because it reinforced my understanding that kindness is not just about solving a problem it is about how you make someone feel while doing so. It showed me that even in small roles, I have the ability to make a meaningful impact. As I pursue a career in nursing, I carry this lesson with me. I want to be someone who not only provides care, but also ensures that every patient feels heard, respected, and supported in moments when they need it most. Creating Connection-Creating connection has always meant bridging gaps whether cultural, emotional, or social. As someone who immigrated from Nigeria to New York City, I experienced firsthand what it feels like to navigate unfamiliar environments while trying to find a sense of belonging. In high school, I became involved in a research project focused on how self-care practices impact students’ self-esteem and overall school environment. While conducting this research, I realized that many students felt isolated or disconnected, often struggling silently with stress and self-image. Rather than viewing the project as just an academic assignment, I saw it as an opportunity to foster connection. I worked with peers to not only collect data, but also start conversations about mental health and self-care topics that are often overlooked or stigmatized. By encouraging open dialogue, we created a space where students felt more comfortable sharing their experiences and supporting one another. Through this process, I saw how simply acknowledging people’s struggles and creating room for discussion could make a difference. Students who once felt alone began to recognize that others shared similar challenges, which helped build a stronger sense of community. Additionally, my role working in a community office further reinforced the importance of connection. Interacting with individuals from diverse backgrounds taught me how vital it is to listen actively and meet people where they are. These experiences have shaped my commitment to creating inclusive environments where people feel valued and understood. In the future, as a nurse, I hope to continue building those connections ensuring that every patient feels not only cared for, but truly seen.

Throughout my life, I have learned that kindness and compassion can transform a daunting experience into one of hope and healing. My journey began as a poor, sickly child, moving from Nigeria and settling in a rundown NYC apartment. The challenges of my environment exposed me to various health issues, but it was the experience of being hospitalized at the age of seven that truly opened my eyes to the essential role of a caregiver. During my two months in the hospital, amidst the sterile white walls and the loneliness of my illness, I found solace in a remarkable nurse named Nurse Amy. She didn’t just treat my symptoms; she saw me. With a warm smile and gentle words, she held my hand during painful procedures and took the time to listen to my fears. Her compassion turned a frightening experience into one of safety and affection. I can still remember the joy of receiving a small pink teddy bear and a balloon with “Congrats” written on it when I finally left the hospital – that simple gesture inspired me to pursue a career where I could replicate that same warmth for others. As time went on, I began to gain valuable volunteer experience and had the privilege of working with multiple organizations. I collaborated with a doctor at Hofstra University to research how different types of self-care can impact the self-esteem of high school students, ultimately resulting in a positive effect on the school environment. Additionally, I worked as a receptionist for Assemblywoman Michaelle C. Solages's office in Valley Stream, where I not only greeted constituents but also assisted behind the scenes with various events, galas, and charitable initiatives, including those related to healthcare. Now, at 17, my goal is to become a nurse who provides the same comfort and love that Nurse Amy gave me. However, financial difficulties present a barrier to my dreams. My family earns less than $70,000 a year, and our life savings are at stake for my college education. This scholarship represents not just financial support but a lifeline that could help me honor Nurse Amy’s impact on my life. With the opportunity to pursue my nursing degree, I can fulfill my dream of caring for others and ensuring they feel cherished and secure during their toughest moments. I believe that every patient deserves that love and care, and with this scholarship, I can be the compassionate nurse who brings light into their lives.

To my family, when coming to America for the first time, we kept our roots through Afro beats, a genre of music for Nigerians. I was 2 when I came to America for the first time with my mother. It was only us living in a tiny 2-bedroom in Brooklyn, on top of a Hispanic restaurant and next to a barbershop. Noise playing 24/7 all day and night in that little apartment. We didn’t have much, but we had one thing that couldn’t bring down our moods no matter what: afrobeats. Even in times of stress music was hope. Heroes come in many forms. They fight diseases, keep patients healthy, and help them live another day. Those are health care workers. Whether nurses, doctors, etc. Their dedication is essential for society's well-being. For all the hard work and responsibility, there is pride knowing that you were the reason a patient is healthier. That’s why I chose nursing and premed, bridging these two vital worlds and providing outstanding care. For that, it’s more than a job; it’s a calling to positively impact lives, and I’m ready to embrace that challenge. Making sure patients go home both happy and healthy. This work has challenged me more than anything, but I am happy to say that I have no regrets about what I did. Each frustrating moment taught me patience and resilience, and I, like Barbie, can be anything I set my mind to. Through dedication to fulfilling my goals, I not only developed my skills but also found a deeper sense of purpose within my research. In the end, I came to truly appreciate that the journey is just as important as the destination.

Dolls, different colors, shapes, sizes, no doll is ever truly the same, just like people. No doll is ever truly ugly, despite just being cotton, plastic, or porcelain to some. What if one doll can inspire you so much that it predicts your future? That was my first experience with Barbie. She was my favorite type of doll, more than any old cotton or porcelain dolls I had during my childhood and still now, for one of many reasons, but the main reason was her being viewed as “anything”. To me, Barbie symbolized grace, beauty, ambition, and more. As a child, I've always adored her confidence and style, and since then, Barbie has inspired me to find confidence in myself and to embrace my potential. With dreams of becoming someone great, especially in the field of research, she embodies someone who can be “anything,” inspiring many children, past, future, and present to follow their dreams no matter how hard the journey gets. As a young child, I viewed research as a realm of wonder, a captivating world just waiting to be explored. I vividly recall watching my first video about research with my lab coat Barbie in my hand, fascinated by the diverse topics within science that not only help others but also highlight important issues. This experience ignited a passion within me. My first research class in the 9th grade was my turning point. I immediately became entranced by this interesting yet tiring journey I was about to embark on. Since I was young, I’ve been a girl passionate about science and my mission to find solutions to everything. Little did I know that this path was not as straightforward as I thought. I found myself staring blankly at articles, struggling with the analysis of research, a task I had never encountered before. I soon started seeing my self-esteem lessen feeling worthless in my efforts to do reaserch, my self-care routine faltered, and I found myself dissatisfied with my academic performance, tempted to give up. One day, as I was researching, I wanted to try again to do better but lacked motivation, so I went downstairs to the basement to clear myself of any distractions. As I was doing my research, I spotted the first Barbie I ever got in a small white and a bit of pink lab coat, the same Barbie in my hand when I watched my first video of research. That moment reminded me that if Barbie could pursue her goals with determination, I could too, despite my challenges. This was the inspiration I needed for my research topic, offering support and guidance to others in high school with similar self-care struggles, using different types of self-care for different students when it comes to increasing their self-esteem. During the summer of 2025, I found a self-care mentor to support my research and dive into a project examining the relationship between self-esteem and self-care in high school students. I again found myself on the brink of burnout, yet I reminded myself of my childhood aspirations and refusal to give up easily. Knowing that others faced similar challenges motivated me to continue. I continued my research with my mentor, exploring more about the projects and decisions I wanted to make for my studies, which made me feel fulfilled through perseverance and skill development.
