NomineeBio
My name is Orianna Regan, and I am currently a Psychology major. I have just been accepted into the University of Connecticut for the fall 2022 semester for psychological sciences and cognitive science. After receiving my bachelor's, I plan on applying to med school to enroll in a Psychiatry program. I have lived on my own and provided for myself since I was only 17 and have been balancing a full-time job on top of going to school for many years because my mother is on disability and is unable to contribute financially.
Growing up in a family of nurses, I was exposed to the medical field at a very young age. I watched the passion for helping others illuminate my childhood and that is where I gained my interest in the field of mental health and psychology. As I continue to see my family helping others through unprecedented times, the desire to continue their legacy grows stronger. I am currently on the path to becoming a psychiatrist, in the hopes to educate and help others to understand the severity of mental illness.
There has been such an unfortunate negative stigma regarding mental illness, such as being viewed as a weakness, yet there is an overwhelming increase in demand for mental health workers today. My goal is to help change the industry to be viewed more positively because mental health should be treated to the same degree as physical health, and I won't back down until that change is complete.

The mind is a house. Like any other house, it needs to be maintained, cleaned, and treated with respect. You wouldn't let visitors march through your house with muddy feet, so why do we let muddy thoughts march through our minds? The most important thing that I have learned from taking care of my mental health is that I can choose to hold onto bad thoughts, but I can also choose to clean them out. Just like a routine house clean, I have turned to journaling. When my head feels heavy, and I can't pinpoint what is bothering me, I write it down. It doesn't have to be pretty and you don't have to show the world, but it helps you to truly understand what thoughts are bringing you down. Pouring these emotions and thoughts onto a piece of paper can relieve the heaviness you feel in your mind. There's no point in letting thoughts live in your head rent-free when all they are doing is bringing you down. When I was a child, my sister told me this quote from H. W. L. Poonja, "Whatever comes, let it come. What stays, let it stay. What goes, let it go". I hold on to these words when battling with my own mind, and hope it will bring others wisdom as well. Our mental houses are the only true home that we reside in forever, so they should be filled with what makes us happy.

Over the past three years, I have been working with bees and learning how to care for them as a beekeeping apprentice. Unfortunately this past Halloween, my mentor passed away, so I have had to use my own knowledge in continuing the business. What I enjoy about working with bees and honey is that it seems so simple but it is so much more complex. On the first day on the job, I bottled over 700 gallons of honey, 700 if you can believe it. I had no idea that the honey business was so extreme but every minute when I was there, I felt alive. I plan on continuing to honor my mentor's wishes and continue the business when I am not in school. There is just something so spectacular about raising bees and collecting your own honey, it makes you feel so in sync with the outdoors. I hope to one day teach my own children how to care for bees and I hope whoever reads this reaches out to their local beekeeper to get the experience themselves.

Years ago, there was a moment when I realized that every single person, wherever they are in the world, is fighting their own battle; a battle that is often hidden from those around them. Often times when you are out in public and encounter someone that may come off as rude, initially you may think that that's just how that person is. However, this is not always the case. Sometimes you need to take a breathe and understand that everyone is going through something and that might be the reason they are acting the way they are. Sadness can make a person irritable while being afraid can make someone seem rude. Each person has their own unique past, present, and future, and it is our job as people to understand how to care for each other and help them through difficult times, just as you would like someone to help you. Being kind to strangers can leave an impact so positive it may change a person's day. With this in mind, it's important to remember to smile, be nice, and greet those you encounter, even if you receive nothing in return. It's the principle that matters, kindness can indeed be infectious, even if you don't realize it.
