Bio
Hey there! I'm Onyinyechi Ndu, a freshman at UC Irvine. I'm a hardworking and passionate student who always strives to do my best. I'm very organized and precise, and I love working with others on projects. When it comes to leadership roles, I always step up and show courage. And I'm not afraid of tough tasks - I'm flexible and patient when trying to solve problems.
My major is Medicine and Engineering, and I'm involved in a ton of extracurricular activities like the Japanese club, HOSA, and Robotics club. I've even competed in competitions like the HOSA state competition and First Robotics Competition, and I was even the president of the Robotics Club. But what drives me is my love for helping the community. I volunteer with all kinds of people from children to the elderly to the homeless.
When I'm not busy with school or volunteering, I like to pursue my hobbies like composing music, playing my violin, and writing stories. I always enjoy spending time with the people I care about, and I'm excited to see what the future holds!
I'm hoping to get some assistance with my college expenses and overall financial stability. It's been a bit of a struggle, but I know that with the right support, I can make it happen. :)

Youth Equine Service Scholarship
In my junior year, I served as a Peer Mediator intending to assist others. One of our assignments involved visiting students from Westwood and West Junior High, engaging in a relaxed walk and conversation. These youngsters were decent individuals who sought someone dependable. As it resonated with me, I aspired to be a supportive figure for them to lean on.
Each time I visited, I encountered something new and exciting. Some days, I was entertained with hilarious stories, while others, I was engrossed in the serious issues shared by the students. One time, one of the kids confided in me about the problems in their family that were affecting their school and home life. I gave them my undivided attention and listened attentively to all their challenges. This simple gesture reassured them that they were in a safe space and that I was there for them. It was heartwarming to see the children light up with joy and happiness when I arrived.
I've been involved in several projects through Peer Mediation, and it's been a great way to get more involved in my school and community. One project that stands out is the Special Olympics for disabled kids, where I had the opportunity to help out. Working with a deaf student was a unique experience, and I wanted to make sure she had the best time possible. I stayed up late studying basic sign language so I could communicate with her, and while it was challenging, seeing her smile made it all worth it. Spending time with her was truly a blessing. Her classmates' kind and friendly interactions filled me with hope. Overall, Peer Mediation has been a rewarding experience that has allowed me to help out in various ways, including supporting teachers in their times of need.
Through the years, I have had the privilege of engaging with various individuals from diverse backgrounds, and this opportunity has helped me develop a deeper sense of empathy and understanding towards others. It has also enabled me to build stronger connections with people, fostering trust and a sense of safety in all my interactions. My emotional intelligence has grown tremendously, allowing me to navigate diverse classrooms with ease and confidence, and I believe it will be instrumental in the medical field as well. Furthermore, this experience has also taught me the significance of compassion and empathy in our daily interactions, and I have continuously applied these virtues in various events such as mentoring children and assisting the homeless. I am optimistic that this knowledge and experience will enable me to connect with other compassionate individuals who share the same goal of making the world a better place, one step at a time.

Hi there, I'm Onyinyechi Ndu, the oldest of two sisters and a proud Texan. My Nigerian parents have always been supportive and loving. I developed a profound appreciation and comprehension of my cultural heritage and my parents' way of life. Both of my parents played pivotal roles in our family's journey from Nigeria to America, and I am continuously inspired by their unique perspectives. My mother was responsible for maintaining our home, while my father worked outside the house. Despite the challenges of starting anew in a foreign country, they remained devoted to preserving our traditions and values. We could either cook meat pie and fried rice, creating the aroma of an African buffet throughout the house or dance to old Nigerian music until our feet couldn't move anymore.
I have a passion for learning and enjoy exploring new topics and skills. I grew up in a lower-class family, with one parent working tirelessly to support us and the other staying at home. Despite these struggles, I always tried my best to help out and support my family. I've taken on leadership roles at home, helped with chores, and even stayed up late to help my sister with her homework. My family has always encouraged me to pursue my dreams, which led me to explore many opportunities in high school.
During my tenure at Richardson High School, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to become a part of several clubs, each of which granted me invaluable practical experiences. Amongst the numerous clubs in which I participated, my top four favorites were the FIRST Robotics, HOSA, Orchestra, and the Japanese Club. Despite acquiring a superb education at the school, I was determined to pursue further knowledge and personal growth. Education has always held great importance in my life, and I felt privileged to explore my interests in my leisure time by attending various events featuring free classes, ranging from coding to knitting. I genuinely believe that education has been instrumental in shaping me into the person I am today, and without it, I would not have been able to achieve what I have.
Being the oldest of my two younger sisters, I hold the responsibility of looking after their well-being while my parents work hard to support our family with a modest income of less than $30,000 annually. Despite the financial limitations, I make the most of every opportunity that comes my way. I always keep an eye out for free or low-cost events and activities that match my interests, so as not to add to the financial burden on my parents. Besides, I actively apply for scholarships and grants to reduce the financial pressure of pursuing higher education, especially for the University of California Irvine, where I aspire to double major in Biomedical Engineering and Public Health Science.
I am immensely grateful for this exceptional scholarship opportunity, as it has been the solution I have been seeking for quite some time. This scholarship is not only a financial relief for my parents and me, but it also presents numerous opportunities for my future endeavors.
