For the past four years, I have sought one answer across labs and disciplines: how does the human body work, and where does it break down? I have studied cell signaling pathways in cardiovascular research, explored regenerative medicine, and even borrowed ideas from aerospace material science to rethink engineered tissue. My final year of undergrad taught me something the lab alone could not. Improving patient outcomes takes more than a bench. It takes understanding the environments and communities that shape health, since addressing these factors is crucial to preventing disease progression and the loss of lives. That is why I am pursuing a Master of Public Health in Epidemiology, to understand disease patterns, marginalized communities, and the lifestyle and environmental factors, like hypoxia, that quietly drive conditions such as heart attacks and ischemia.
I am passionate about using data and technology to strengthen the accuracy and impact of research, building fluency in both qualitative and quantitative methods so the numbers we collect translate into meaningful change for the people behind them.
I am also an international student, and every step of this path has required sacrifice. Finishing my bachelor's with two majors: Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Data Science with a minor in Biophysics was not required of me. I chose that weight because I am building toward a PhD, and the strongest scientists move fluidly between disciplines. This MPH is a deliberate step in an interdisciplinary journey that has defined my academic career.

Joe Gilroy "Plan Your Work, Work Your Plan" Scholarship
In January 2022, I stepped off a plane in Nashville, Tennessee, alone. I was seventeen years old and did not know a single person in the United States. What I did have was a plan. I had picked my university, major, and decided, long before I understood how hard it would be, that I wanted a career in discovering new treatments for heart disease. The plan remains constant even though the path towards it has changed more than once.
My goal is a career in cardiovascular drug discovery that treats laboratory research and computational methods as equally necessary, rather than as separate disciplines. That goal stemmed from a limitation I encountered as an undergraduate student. I could carefully design and run an experiment, but I could not always explain the patterns in my results. So, I built a second major in Data Science alongside Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, specifically to close that gap.
The next step of the plan is a Master of Public Health in Epidemiology at Baylor University, a two-year program from Fall 2026 through Spring 2028. I am using this as an opportunity to build my research skills and gain quantitative methods that can help with cardiovascular biology research. With such qualifications and skill set, I can apply to Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programs in biomedical sciences in 2027 to begin in Fall 2028, including the Biological and Biomedical Sciences program at Yale University.
The resources this plan requires are specific. Based on Baylor’s cost of attendance figures and my actual rent, one academic year costs about 94,814 dollars, including tuition, fees, housing, food, books, supplies, and transportation. I currently hold a scholarship covering fifty percent of tuition only, which leaves roughly 55,278 dollars in unmet need per year. That gap covers the other half of tuition and fees, plus the cost of housing, books, health insurance, and other living expenses.
This scholarship is a piece of the funding plan. I am actively applying for on-campus positions at Baylor University, including a graduate research assistantship that would pair funding with the research experience my career plan depends on, and I am applying for additional scholarships in addition to this award. This scholarship would close part of the gap that a research assistantship and other awards are unlikely to cover on their own, particularly in the first year before an assistantship placement is confirmed.
I have also had to learn that a good plan includes limits. I have overcommitted before and had to relearn how to structure a day around what matters instead of everything that feels urgent. That same lesson is what I apply to funding this degree. I am not asking for support to make an uncertain plan possible. I am asking for support to close a specific, calculated gap in a plan that is already underway. That plan is evidenced by three years of research experience across Fisk University, Meharry Medical College, and Stanford University Cardiovascular Institute, and by a course of study I chose deliberately, learning new techniques from outside the field of biomedical research to make results more reliable and to improve the outcomes of patients burdened by cardiovascular disease.
I plan my work, and I work my plan. This scholarship would fund the part of that plan that discipline alone cannot cover.
Emerging Leaders in STEM Scholarship
I never knew you could be so mediocre." My mother said this to me as I sat in the backseat of her car on my way home from writing my final high school exams. That sentence changed the direction of my life and started my journey toward becoming a student in the United States.
I was born and raised in Nigeria in a family of six. My father is a self-employed businessman and my mother is a medical doctor. Since elementary school, I followed her to the clinic and watched her treat patients, and I decided early on that I wanted to do the same. My mother knew the profession from the inside, and she warned me about the challenges she had faced on her own path, high unemployment, frequent long academic strikes, and inadequate infrastructure. I was ready to endure all of it rather than place a financial burden on my family by studying abroad. But her words about mediocrity stayed with me, and they pushed me to apply for admission and scholarships in the United States instead.
In January 2022, I moved to the United States alone, drawn by the academic courses and facilities available to someone interested in medicine. The transition brought real opportunity, but also real obstacles. My accent was the biggest one. I was afraid to speak up in class or approach my professors because of moments when I was misunderstood, and that fear made it harder to build the kind of long term connections that open doors in research and academia.
Overcoming that meant choosing to be open and resilient on purpose. I made myself speak clearly and confidently even when it was uncomfortable. I sought out mentorship from professors and upperclassmen, and I built relationships with professionals in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics not to impress them but to learn from them. That effort led me into research across neuroscience, engineering, and cardiovascular science, and it showed me that my interest in medicine could take a different shape than I first imagined.
As I built those skills, I also stepped into leadership. I currently serve as the International Student Affairs Senator in the Fisk University Student Government Association, advocating for a community of 201 international students from 6 countries and proposing bills to help their transition to campus run smoothly.
Medicine is still what first pulled me toward science, but research is where that pull has led me. This fall, I am beginning a Master of Public Health in Epidemiology at Baylor University, working toward a PhD in biomedical sciences and a career in cardiovascular drug discovery, bridging molecular research with computational methods to develop treatments that reach the people who need them most. The same instinct that made me want to treat patients now drives me to understand disease at a scale that can help far more people than one clinic ever could. My accent once made me afraid to speak. Now I intend to use my voice, and my research, to make sure the people most often left out of scientific progress are not left behind.
Eitel Scholarship
During my time as a peer mentor at Fisk University, I was paired with an incoming international student. She arrived on campus unsure of her major, worried about the cost of tuition, and homesick in a way I recognized immediately. I remember sitting with her, walking her through her class schedule, and reassuring her that she did not have to have everything figured out in her first semester. What she needed was not academic advice. She needed someone to tell her she was not alone. She needed to hear that she was courageous for leaving her home country for a better education in the United States. I made sure to tell her because I would have loved to hear the same thing myself when I left my family to pursue higher education, with the well-equipped facilities I needed for my scientific training.
That moment stayed with me because it reflects a belief I hold deeply. Faith is not held by one person. It is lived out through the people we choose to show up for. I moved to the United States alone in January 2022, leaving behind my family and everything familiar. In those first months, the community became my lifeline. The friendship I built, the mentors who guided me, and my faith carried me through moments when I questioned whether I made the right choice. Mentoring other students became my way of returning the support I was given and making sure no one had to feel alone, as I sometimes did.
That same instinct to serve shaped my academic path. At Fisk University, I earned a double major in Data Science and Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, with a minor in Biophysics, graduating with a 3.9 GPA. These three fields might seem unrelated, but together they reflect how I see my calling. Biochemistry and Molecular Biology taught me to ask precise questions about how the human body works and what causes diseases at the level of individual cells. Biophysics helped me understand those same processes, considering physical laws such as diffusion. Data Science taught me how to find patterns in complexity and use them to serve people at a larger scale. Together, they gave me the depth to understand a community’s health problems and the tools to act on what I find.
This fall, I begin my Master of Public Health in Epidemiology at Baylor University. My long-term goal is to earn a PhD in biomedical sciences and build a career in cardiovascular drug discovery, bridging molecular research with computational methods to develop treatments that reach the people who need them the most. Public health is, at its core, a discipline of service. It asks who is left behind and what can be done about it. That question sits at the center of both my faith and my scientific training, and it is the same question I was answering when I sat with that student in the union, making sure she knew someone saw her.
This scholarship speaks directly to a mission I already carry. Supporting women pursuing a Christian university education is not just about helping individuals finish a degree. It is about equipping women to walk into classrooms, conferences, and communities and use their work as a form of witness, showing through action what it means to serve others. I want the mentoring I receive to multiply through the research I conduct, the students I guide, and the science I contribute to the world. This scholarship would allow me to keep building that path without financial strain standing in the way of the calling I am pursuing.
Manuela Calles Scholarship for Women
I was eleven years old the first time I saw what my community did with pain that I did not understand. A man in our church was tied with a chain in the middle of the church grounds. He was hallucinating. The leadership in the church called it a spiritual attack and said he needed deliverance through prayer, not mental health treatment. I remember standing there scared, watching adults believe that chains and prayer were the only real treatment for a mind in crisis.
That belief was not just in church; it was in my home too. When I was stressed or sad, my parents did not ignore me, but they did not know another way to respond. They would hand me my favorite soda and tell me to cheer up. In Nigeria, struggling mentally was often seen as a sign of being ungrateful or raised the wrong way, not a cry for help. I grew up believing that pain was something you hid, never to be addressed.
I carried that belief with me when I moved to the United States alone at seventeen. My whole life now in two suitcases and no family nearby. I was scared and isolated in a new country, and still carried the same fear about admitting I was struggling. I could not bring myself to speak up about how hard the adjustment was, because part of me still believed that admitting struggle would make me look ungrateful, especially with my parents and three siblings back home who sacrificed so much for me to be here.
My mentality changed as I watched other international students carry the same burden. Having overcome several obstacles as an international student, I decided to become a peer mentor. As a peer mentor, I was matched with incoming students who reminded me of myself: ambitious, capable, and quietly overwhelmed. I saw the same pattern repeatedly. Students would push through exhaustion, homesickness, and culture shock without ever asking for help, because many of us came from communities where mental health was not something you talked about openly. Mentoring them forced me to talk about it myself, out loud, for the first time. It became less about fixing one student's problem and more about breaking a pattern that stretched far beyond any one of us.
That is why I chose to study epidemiology. Individual support matters, but it is not enough on its own. The belief that mental struggle equals weakness does not live in one person; it lives in communities, shaped by culture, geography, and access to care. Epidemiology allows me to study those patterns, understand why certain communities are less likely to seek help, and use that understanding to design real, lasting solutions rather than one conversation at a time.
I am ambitious, but my ambition is not separate from my community; it comes from it. I know what it feels like to sit in silence and believe you have no right to speak. I want to build a career that gives that silence somewhere to go, first through research that reveals where mental health support is missing, and later through policy and public health work that reaches communities like the one I grew up in, and the one I found among international students here.
The man in the church ground is not a story I tell to shock people. He is the reason I believe mental health work has to reach further than any one clinic or classroom. I want to be part of the generation that replaces chains with understanding and a safer approach.

However, my mother suggested studying abroad, mentioning unresolved challenges she faced on her journey to becoming a medical doctor: high unemployment rate, frequent long academic strikes, and inadequate infrastructure. Although aware of these issues, I was ready to endure them because I knew the financial burden it would place on my family. My mother’s words on mediocrity resonated deeply, prompting me to apply for admissions and scholarships in the United States.
In January 2022, I came to the United States because of the vast academic courses and facilities it offers, especially in my interest in medicine. Being a student here has brought academic success and global networking through interacting with students from other countries, but also some challenges.
The main obstacle I faced being an international student from Africa was my accent. I was scared to talk to my fellow peers and teachers because of occasions where I was not understood. Hence, I found the professional world difficult to navigate because I could not form long-lasting connections. Accessing research and enrichment opportunities was arduous as well. However, my passion for obtaining a medical degree motivated me to overcome these challenges.
With this determination, I had to be open-minded and resilient. When communicating, I took the step of courage to be myself and speak out confidently. Networking with professionals in the STEM field became essential to building meaningful connections, not for the purpose of impressing them but for learning. I sought out mentorship from my experienced professors and upperclassmen. I was able to obtain guidance to lead to the fulfillment of my career goals. I worked hard both in my academic courses and being engaged in extracurriculars and research projects in different disciplines: neuroscience, engineering, and cardiovascular science.
Realizing that communicating and networking are skills that have developed in me, I took the initiative to apply for a leadership role in the Fisk University Student Government Association. I serve as the current International Student Affairs Senator. I advocate for the diverse community of international students at Fisk University, consisting of 201 students from 6 countries. I work to propose bills to ensure their transition to the school community is smooth.
In the future, I plan to attend medical school and continue participating in research projects that advance my understanding of medicine. My journey as an international student has been challenging, but I refuse to settle less or let challenges limit me when there is so much impact I can make in my university, the community of international students, and the medical field.
