It would be impossible for me to describe myself without mentioning my chaotic and perfectly imperfect upbringing. I came from a home that was a beautiful disaster- six of us squeezed into a house in a small town, all contributing our own bold personalities to make a space filled with love. I can’t describe to you in words what was built in that home, yet I know when it was time for me to enter into the world and begin college, my heart was filled with so much passion and love and I was on a mission to find somewhere to place it. From a young age, my parents instilled in me the value of human life and how everyone deserved a chance at it. This became a cause that I was so passionate about that I travelled to Washington D.C on three separate occasions to attend the March for Life Rally. Through every trip, I felt my servant heart growing, and I knew my purpose in life was to live in full service to others. I wasn’t sure where that calling would lead me, however, until my second year of college. I remember when I was younger asking my father what my sister was sick with. He replied with “Ramsey’s not sick Olivia, that’s just the way God made her.” As it turns out, he was right. God made Ramsey with Autism. Growing up with a sister with a disability was unconventional, but truly beautiful. Having her as my sister was one of the greatest gifts I ever received. It further solidified the value of human life in my eyes. She gave me something to live for. Which is why when my mother called me one day and told me that Ramsey was a victim of sexual assault, I felt one of the deepest amounts of grief I had ever experienced. I vowed to myself that this was the last time I would remain a helpless bystander: so I chose to embark on a career that would bring joy and light to the darkest of moments. To value human life is to value a persons memories, their favorite things, and all the little intricacies that make them whole. When I chose to pursue a career in medicine, I knew it would gift me with the opportunity to help people tell their stories. With the education I equip myself with, I plan to firmly stand for the protection of all human life- despite their disability, age, or ethnicity. I desire to make a lasting impact on the medical field and pave way for a future that sees the beauty in all life.
