Bio

My dream is to open a bakery! To accomplish this dream, I plan to major in entrepreneurship and then go to pastry school after I graduate. I currently run my own baking business where I sell custom cakes and desserts to customers! Although it is hard work to run the business while keeping up with class work, I feel that it is a great first step towards starting my brick-and-mortar bakery in the future

Ella Katherine Harris Memorial Scholarship for Bakers
Two years ago, I made the decision to turn my passion for baking into part of my livelihood. I had been baking all sorts of desserts and practicing cake decorating for four years before I finally started my small business at 16 years old. A decision that I was uncertain about at first, but I am immensely glad I made. One without which I wouldn't have grown or attained the business knowledge, baking skills, or personal understanding I have today. Since starting my baking business, I've shifted from selling custom-decorated cakes and cupcakes for birthday parties and events to selling various pastries from menus I create for pop-ups around my hometown. Regardless of my business style and who I am providing sweet treats to, one significant component remains the same: someone smiles. At least one person's day is made more joyful than it was before. Seeing that joy, that is where I draw my inspiration. There is something powerful about creating a dessert that makes someone pause, close their eyes, and smile. I'm not a very outspoken person and often find it difficult to express my emotions, but baking lets me translate my love for people into something tangible, full of flavor and warmth. I hope that people are able to feel the intention behind my pastries through the textures and flavors I work hard to perfect. This motivation challenges me to be patient, disciplined, and constantly improving in the kitchen. I love experimenting with different flavor variations for all types of desserts, but especially with chiffon cakes. Since starting my baking business, I've explored many different flavor pairings and have tested incorporating them into chiffon cake. My most recent creation is an Earl Grey tres leches cake with lavender chantilly cream and blackberry filling. I think the versatility paired with the reliability of chiffon cakes is why they're my favorite. They allow me to be creative with the flavors and change the components to whatever my heart desires while remaining a simple, enjoyable pastry that everyone knows and loves. That is what I try to accomplish with all of my baked goods: unique flavors that bring a twist to staple feel-good desserts, ultimately creating something that feels elegant yet comforting for people. In the future, I hope to open a bakery that feels welcoming and intentional; a space with warm lighting, the smell of fresh bread, and pastries displayed like small pieces of art. I want my bakery to be more than a place to grab a treat; I want it to feel like a community gathering spot, somewhere people slow down and savor the moment. Through baking, I hope to build something lasting, both a business and a legacy of care. Food has the ability to bring people together, comfort them during difficult times, and celebrate life’s milestones. Pursuing a career in baking is not just about opening a shop; it is about dedicating myself to a craft that connects people through warmth and generosity. It's my dream to continue my education in baking so I can master foundational skills, expand my technical knowledge, and learn from experienced pastry chefs who can challenge me to grow. Receiving this scholarship would not only help me live that dream but also motivate me to honor Ella Katherine Harris’s memory by pursuing this dream wholeheartedly. Like Ella, I believe baking is about heart as much as skill. I hope to carry that spirit with me as I continue to grow, create, and serve others through my work.
