Dr. Christine Lawther First in the Family Scholarship
Being the first person in my family to complete college is a significant personal accomplishment as well as a family triumph. It is a symbol of tenacity in the face of difficulties and a bridge to opportunities that were previously inaccessible. Beyond academics, my journey is about disrupting generational patterns and establishing a standard for future generations. This achievement is a dream come true for my entire family. As a single mom with three kids, my mother has demonstrated tenacity and commitment, giving us courage and tenacity. Getting a degree respects her sacrifices and shows my siblings that no matter what obstacles we encounter, pursuing higher education is achievable. It is hoped that by sharing our family's story, others in our community may be motivated to overcome any perceived barriers. I'm majoring in psychology at college in order to pursue a career as a therapist. My desire to comprehend people's mental and emotional experiences—especially in marginalized and poor communities—led me to make this choice. As a child, I witnessed the difficulties experienced by those who required therapy but were unable to get it because of their financial situation. These encounters gave me a strong urge to ensure that everyone, regardless of financial background, had access to mental health resources. In addition to giving me the tools I need to become a compassionate and successful therapist, my education enables me to investigate important psychological ideas like behavior, cognition, and emotion. To support methods that are equitable and sensitive to cultural differences, I also aim to deepen my understanding of diversity and inclusivity in mental health care. Since college offers the skills and information required to have a lasting influence, it is a first step in realizing these goals. My long-term goal is to become a licensed therapist and specialize in treating underserved populations that encounter structural obstacles to mental health care. In addition to providing therapy, I want to establish a practice that helps marginalized communities de-stigmatize mental health concerns. My goal is to work with neighborhood groups and educational institutions to develop initiatives that inform and empower people about the value of mental health. In addition to my practice, I hope to support laws that expand access to mental health services to help bring about more significant systemic change. I want to take part in research and community outreach programs that focus on the unique needs of various groups, particularly those who are disproportionately impacted by inequities in mental health. My ultimate objective is to leave a legacy of empathy, grit, and self-determination. Having earned my degree and committed my life to this endeavor, Honoring my family's sacrifices, and encouraging others to follow their passions despite seemingly insurmountable obstacles are my goals. Building a better future for myself and the communities I serve is the goal of this journey.

I'm Olivia, a psychology major who has a strong desire to comprehend the human mind and promote constructive change. My upbringing in a single-parent home, where my mother's unrelenting perseverance motivated me to overcome obstacles, has influenced my path. Her support of our family taught me empathy, resiliency, and the importance of giving back. These principles have influenced my decision to become a therapist to help underprivileged areas. My dedication to mental health awareness is rooted in my own experiences with financial limitations preventing me from receiving therapy. I am aware of the significant effects that mental health issues may have on both people and families. This knowledge inspires me to bring about change by providing therapeutic services that are accessible, reasonably priced, and caring. In my ideal world, no one will be refused mental health care because of their inability to pay. In addition to my professional goals, I make significant and ongoing contributions to my community. I managed the wrestling team and led the show choir in high school. In these positions, I placed a high priority on emotional support and inclusivity, creating spaces where everyone was treated with respect. I have also volunteered with neighborhood organizations, assisting in the planning of activities that raise awareness of mental health issues and offer assistance to people in need. Working with peers to develop a session for kids on mental health was one of the most rewarding projects I've ever worked on. We created exercises that promoted candid discussions about mental health and offered stress-reduction techniques. My commitment to mental health awareness was strengthened by seeing individuals interact and share their stories. Even though I have had several successes along the way, I have also had setbacks that have molded me. In my first leadership position in show choir, for example, I found it difficult to strike a balance between group discipline and inclusivity. After reflecting on feedback from both peers and mentors, I learned the importance of clear communication and adaptability. This experience taught me that failure is not the end but a valuable stepping stone toward growth. After considering the criticism I received from mentors and peers, I realized how crucial flexibility and good communication are. I learned from this experience that failure is a necessary step on the path to improvement rather than the finish. Empathy, tenacity, and a sincere desire to change the world are my strongest traits. I try to live up to these values in all I do, whether it's by actively listening, solving problems, or helping people along their paths. I intend to use these strengths to spread good change throughout my neighborhood and beyond as I pursue my degree and profession. I want to make a significant difference in the world by advocating for mental health, encouraging others around me, and never giving up on learning and development. With the help of this scholarship, I will be able to continue on this road and realize my goal of providing compassionate and easily accessible mental health care.

I managed the wrestling team at my school during my senior year of high school, which required me to strike a balance between support, organization, and leadership. I soon discovered that the role required more than just task management, even though my main duties included logistics like scheduling transportation and overseeing equipment. It required emotional intelligence and a dedication to creating a supportive team atmosphere. I demonstrated humility in one particular situation by prioritizing the needs of the team over my own and going above and beyond in the process. One of our wrestlers was distraught after suffering a difficult defeat at a crucial competition. I felt obliged to assist him, even though many others would have left him to deal with the situation on his own. I went over to him, lending him a sympathetic ear and allowing him to freely express his emotions. Rather than offering general guidance, I concentrated on comprehending his feelings, praising his efforts, and reminding him of his importance to the team outside of games. We discussed ways to help him restore confidence and concentration for his next matches. My participation didn't stop there. Realizing that this athlete wasn't the only one experiencing emotional stress, I started team-building exercises in the days that followed, giving the wrestlers a chance to connect and encourage one another away from the mat. To meet the demands of each athlete and make sure they were all properly prepared both mentally and physically, I also collaborated closely with the coaching team. By accepting these extra obligations, I helped the team succeed by fostering a more supportive and cohesive atmosphere. The core of my behavior was humility. Rather than pursuing accolades or concentrating on my designated responsibilities, I put the team's welfare first. To modify my strategy and emphasize teamwork and ongoing learning, I asked wrestlers and coaches for their opinions. I was able to build trust and adjust to this mindset. It had a big effect. The wrestler I helped regained his confidence, did well in the matches that followed, and thanked me for keeping him grounded during a trying time. Later, the coaches admitted that my work had simplified their tasks, allowing them to concentrate on strategy and skill development while I took care of team morale and logistics. Beyond the short-term outcomes, the team developed a supportive culture that persisted throughout the season. This encounter reaffirmed the importance of humility in leadership. It taught me that working for the benefit of others, being flexible, and keeping an open mind are the keys to real success. I exemplify this strategy in my coursework, clinical rotations, and future work environments by emphasizing empathy and teamwork to make a good, long-lasting difference in the groups and communities I work with.

My name is Olivia, and I am a psychology major driven by a passion for making mental health care accessible to all, especially those facing financial and systemic barriers. Growing up in a single-parent household, I saw firsthand how financial struggles could limit access to essential services like therapy. This experience shaped my desire to become a therapist who offers affordable care to marginalized communities, ensuring that no one feels alone or forgotten in their mental health journey. This scholarship would be a significant step toward realizing my dream of becoming a licensed therapist. With financial assistance, I could concentrate more on my academics and less on paying for tuition, which would allow me to keep doing well academically and look for volunteer and internship opportunities that would broaden my real-world experience. In addition to relieving my financial burden, this scholarship would enable me to spend more time performing community service, which is a crucial component of my development into a kind and well-rounded mental health practitioner. Breaking down obstacles to mental health care is at the heart of my academic and professional objectives. After obtaining a master's degree in counseling psychology, I want to work with charitable groups to provide free services or start a sliding-scale therapy practice. I've studied imposter syndrome, ethical standards, and the psychology of diversity, among other subjects that have expanded my horizons and equipped me to tackle mental health disparities in multicultural societies. I have always placed a high value on being involved in the community. As a wrestling manager and member of the show choir in high school, I managed to integrate leadership responsibilities with academic brilliance. I learned the importance of tenacity, teamwork, and inclusivity from these positions. I've kept up my contributions in college by guiding conversations on societal challenges in my sociology and writing classes and mentoring peers in psychology. Additionally, I promote mental health awareness by taking part in campus activities and establishing areas where students feel supported and heard. My journey hasn't been without obstacles, though. My inability to manage my extracurricular activities and academic responsibilities during my first semester of college was one of my worst mistakes. I was feeling overburdened and recognized that I wasn't putting my all into any one area since I had overcommitted. I discovered the value of setting priorities, taking care of oneself, and seeking assistance. I learned time management and resilience from this experience, two skills that have subsequently been crucial to my academic success. My capacity for empathy, perseverance, and interpersonal connection are my strongest traits. I want to foster workplaces where individuals feel secure and appreciated, whether that is through team leadership, lending a sympathetic ear to a friend, or promoting mental health awareness. My personal experiences have cultivated a deep sense of compassion, and my academic pursuits have equipped me with the knowledge and skills necessary to make a meaningful impact in the field of mental health. Receiving this scholarship would empower me to continue my journey toward becoming a therapist dedicated to breaking down barriers and providing care to those who need it most. With your support, I am confident that I can turn my vision of accessible, compassionate mental health care into a reality.

My main objective is to obtain licensure as a therapist with a concentration on offering underprivileged populations reasonably priced mental health treatments. This goal is a result of my observations of how financial constraints affect therapy access and my firm conviction that everyone should have easy access to mental health services. Education, economic strategy, real-world experience, and community outreach are all part of my approach to accomplishing this aim. My first steps in fulfilling license criteria include earning a psychology bachelor's degree and then a clinical psychology master's or doctoral degree. A solid foundation in crucial areas including counseling, trauma-informed care, and cultural competency will be provided via this academic development. By providing me with practical experience and supervision through internships, the practical training component—which is necessary for licensing—will also help me get ready for the challenges of therapy in the real world. Education is expensive, especially graduate school, where a master's degree might cost $80,000 and a doctorate program can cost $150,000. I'm looking for grants like the Outstanding Undergraduate College Scholarship and the Scholar Dollars Essay Scholarship to help pay for these costs. To reduce debt, I'll also think about taking up part-time work, applying for federal school loans, and living a frugal lifestyle. My academic career will be supported by these funding sources and prudent budgeting, preventing me from accruing excessive debt. My success will depend on my ability to connect with mentors and professional resources. I intend to join groups like the American Psychological Association (APA), go to networking events, and take advantage of the career resources offered by my university. I will get access to up-to-date research, expert advice, and training materials if I become an APA member. Mentors can also help with clinical practice, offer guidance on successful therapy approaches, and offer information on the licensure procedure. My growth as a therapist will be greatly aided by this network. My objective is to open a private practice with a sliding-scale payment plan after receiving my license so that I may help customers of all income levels. To begin, I'll need between $10,000 and $15,000 to pay for things like marketing, office rent, and insurance.I intend to offer various payment alternatives while preserving the viability of the firm by implementing sliding-scale rates. I intend to work with neighborhood health organizations, community centers, and schools to reach potential customers by forming alliances that raise awareness of my offerings. In order to support my sliding-scale concept, I will also look for donations from NGOs that specialize in mental health. I'll also establish a referral system with nearby clinics to guarantee my consumers have access to all-encompassing care. After completing my undergraduate degree in two years, I plan to pursue graduate courses, internships, and supervised training for three to five years. I'll spend around a year establishing my practice, forming alliances, and growing my network of referrals after receiving my license. My objective is to develop a successful, well-established practice that helps people in need within ten years. It will take a combination of study, budgeting, mentoring, and targeted outreach for me to become a licensed therapist. I want to establish a significant practice that provides mental health care to individuals who need it most by being determined and creative. Although this path will be difficult, I'm determined to take the actions required to realize my vision.

Being able to pursue my academic and professional objectives, especially in the field of holistic health and healing, would be greatly impacted by receiving scholarship assistance. As a psychology major hoping to work as a therapist, I'm dedicated to supporting people with mental health issues, especially those who might not have access to reasonably priced care. With the help of this scholarship, I will be able to concentrate on my education and hands-on training without having to worry about money constraints, which will ultimately help me learn more about holistic treatment methods. One of my main goals is to offer therapy that acknowledges the mind-body connection that is crucial to holistic recovery by integrating psychological and physical well-being. Although it is evident that mental and physical health are intertwined, mental health is frequently seen in a vacuum. I intend to create a comprehensive therapeutic strategy that incorporates mindfulness, diet, exercise, and emotional well-being by obtaining additional education in holistic health. By addressing the interconnection of all facets of a client's existence, I would be able to assist them in improving not only their mental health but also their general quality of life. I will also be able to enroll in specialized courses and get certificates thanks to this scholarship, which will help me learn more about holistic health approaches. For instance, somatic therapy, which highlights the body's role in the healing process, is something I'd like to learn more about. I want to assist clients in achieving more profound and long-lasting healing by fusing conventional therapeutic techniques with holistic approaches. With the help of the funding, I would be able to go to conferences, seminars, and workshops, expanding my skill set and giving me the means to have a bigger influence on my future clients' lives. In addition, I want to help underserved communities, where mental health resources are frequently scarce, by applying the knowledge I've acquired throughout my studies and holistic health practices. I grew up in a setting where it was expensive to get mental health care, so I have a great deal of empathy for those who have both emotional and financial obstacles to receiving help.By my efforts, I wish to lessen the stigma associated with mental health issues and make treatment available to everyone, particularly those unable to pay for conventional therapeutic services. By providing a comprehensive approach to therapy, I hope to establish a therapeutic setting that attends to all of human needs, promoting my clients' emotional health and resilience. In the end, this scholarship grant represents an investment in my capacity to support a broader movement toward holistic health and healing, not just a financial resource. In addition to helping people, I hope my work will have a significant impact on larger cultural changes toward more accessible, compassionate, and integrative healthcare. I want to question accepted methods and have a long-lasting effect on how we think about and handle mental health by fusing standard therapy with holistic techniques. I'll be able to get closer to that goal with the help of this scholarship, which will enable me to finish my education and eventually improve the lives of those who are most in need.

My upbringing has influenced my determination and drive in a single-parent home with two elder siblings and little money. Being the youngest, I frequently saw how difficult it was for my mother to support us all by herself. She was able to keep our environment steady and encouraging despite the challenges. Her tremendous efforts, juggling several jobs to make sure we had all we needed, taught me the value of perseverance, hard work, and seizing every chance. My ambition to work in therapy, where I can offer reasonably priced mental health services to others who, like my family, suffer financial obstacles, has been fueled by this experience. I'm committed to eliminating the stigma associated with mental health issues and making sure that everyone, irrespective of background, has access to the help they require. I am studying psychology and concentrating on honing the abilities required to become a therapist to aggressively pursue my ambitions. To assist those in my neighborhood who might not have the means to obtain mental health care, I also volunteer. I'm trying to make a difference by helping people who are going through similar things so they don't have to go through it alone through my education and community service.

I once went through a period of extreme discouragement and self-doubt when I had to rely largely on my faith to get through a big obstacle. During this period, I was so overcome by my academic and personal hardships that I began to doubt my own skills and even thought about giving up. I felt alone in my experience, unable to see a clear way forward, and certain that no one could truly comprehend the burden I was bearing. I looked to God throughout this difficult time for direction, solace, and the will to keep going. By choosing to rely on my faith, I was able to change my viewpoint and get through a challenging period. At first, I wasn't sure how my faith might assist me solve the practical problems I was dealing with, but I made the decision to have confidence that God would lead me through the dark. I made a commitment to pray every day, asking for mental clarity and fortitude. Isaiah 41:10, which reads, "Do not be dismayed, for I am your God; do not be afraid, for I am with you," gave me comfort. I will support you with my righteous hand; I will help and empower you. This verse gave me peace because it reaffirmed that God was with me, that I wasn't alone in my troubles, and that He would provide me with the strength I required. I started to sense God's presence more strongly as a result of these times of prayer and introspection, and He gave me hope and serenity just when I needed it. I was able to change from a depressed to a resilient mindset because of this sense of calm. I was able to concentrate more on what I could manage and less on what seemed impossible by giving my anxieties to God. I started dividing my problems into smaller, more doable tasks and reminded myself that every little accomplishment, no matter how tiny, had significance. My religion provided me with the perseverance and forbearance to continue doing things one step at a time. During this time, I also discovered how important it is to trust God's timing. I frequently wished my circumstances would improve more rapidly since I was frustrated by how slowly I was making improvement. However, as I kept praying and reading the Bible, I was reminded that sometimes patience is necessary for growth and that God's intentions are frequently beyond our comprehension. According to Jeremiah 29:11, "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to give you hope and a future, plans to prosper you and not harm you." Even though I couldn't see God's plan clearly at the time, this scripture helped me accept that it was happening and let go of my need to control every eventuality. My faith strengthened with time, and I discovered the inner fortitude to confront my difficulties with a fresh sense of direction. When I think back on this event, I see that depending on God strengthened my connection with Him in addition to helping me get through this trying time. I now remind myself of the lessons I acquired throughout that trying period whenever I face new challenges. My faith will always be a source of strength, enabling me to endure whatever challenges I face.

I experienced firsthand how financial hardship can prevent folks who need mental health services from accessing them as a child growing up in a single-parent home. I became aware of the significant inequities in this sector when my mother, who supported our family on her own, struggled to locate reasonably priced mental health care when we needed it. This encounter greatly influenced my desire to work as a therapist in underserved communities—especially those who might find it difficult to get the care they need because of financial constraints. My path to working in mental health is quite personal. The psychological toll of dealing with life's challenges without easily available resources made me realize how important mental health care is, but also how expensive it can be for people with little money. This has motivated my career goal of becoming a therapist prioritizing affordability and inclusivity. I plan to provide a sliding-scale fee structure, offer community-based workshops, and work with local organizations to extend mental health services to underserved populations. In addition to my career aspirations, my experience has strengthened my commitment to activism. I advocate for policy changes that prioritize mental health funding, particularly for communities of color and other underrepresented groups who often face higher rates of trauma and discrimination. I believe that mental health is a right, not a privilege and that providing affordable, accessible care is a vital way to promote equity and social justice. By focusing my activism on increasing mental health resources and public awareness, I aim to reduce the stigma around mental health issues, especially within marginalized communities where such stigma is often deeply ingrained. Studying psychology has further solidified my approach. In my classes, I've learned about the importance of culturally competent care, an approach that is essential in reaching people from diverse backgrounds. I am especially interested in incorporating trauma-informed and strengths-based practices into my therapy. I have seen the positive impact that culturally sensitive mental health practices can have on clients, allowing them to feel understood and empowered rather than alienated. I also strive to address social issues related to mental health in my community. Volunteering with organizations that provide mental health support to low-income individuals has allowed me to connect with people from all walks of life and understand the importance of listening to each person’s unique story. Through these experiences, I have seen how mental health issues intersect with systemic injustices like racism, economic inequality, and limited educational opportunities. This has fueled my passion for creating change on both individual and societal levels. By pursuing a career in mental health, I plan to make a positive impact by offering affordable, accessible therapy to those who may otherwise go without it. I am committed to reducing barriers to mental health care and ensuring that everyone, regardless of their socioeconomic status or background, has the opportunity to achieve emotional well-being. I've been motivated to pursue this career by my own experiences, and I want to empower and support those in need by removing the obstacles preventing them from getting the care they require.

My decision to pursue a psychology degree stems from a genuine personal desire to better understand human behavior and enhance mental health services, especially for BIPOC communities. Growing up, I witnessed personally how systemic roadblocks and social prejudices frequently prevent mental health issues from being addressed, particularly within these communities. This has motivated me to study psychology to offer easily accessible, culturally sensitive care and assistance. Seeking mental health assistance might be intimidating for many BIPOC people. Attitudes toward mental health are frequently influenced by historical trauma and cultural norms. Seeking assistance is stigmatized in some cultures because it may be interpreted as a sign of weakness or failure. It is more difficult for BIPOC people to get the assistance they require because of these variables as well as a shortage of therapists with cultural training. Furthermore, these populations frequently have greater rates of mental health conditions including anxiety, depression, and PTSD as a result of their historical experiences with racial discrimination and oppression. Culturally appropriate mental health care can assist in overcoming these obstacles. It has been demonstrated that culturally responsive therapy, which considers a patient's cultural background, perspective, and particular experiences, enhances therapeutic results. BIPOC people are more likely to feel understood and accepted when these elements are incorporated into the therapeutic process. This encourages them to seek help and have faith in the healing process. It's also critical to lessen the stigma associated with mental health among BIPOC communities. People frequently steer clear of therapy out of concern that they may be misinterpreted or judged. In order to change these attitudes, education and community-based initiatives are essential. In my opinion, increasing awareness and normalizing mental health services might make people feel more at ease asking for assistance when necessary, which will improve their general mental health. Systemic obstacles to receiving mental health services, like a shortage of therapists and excessive costs, also affect BIPOC populations. Improving access to care requires policies that address these gaps, such as boosting financing for mental health services in underprivileged communities and encouraging the hiring of BIPOC mental health professionals. To sum up, getting a psychology degree enables me to try to remove the obstacles that keep BIPOC people from getting the mental health treatment they are entitled to. I want to significantly improve the mental health of BIPOC populations by promoting culturally appropriate services and lowering stigma, which will promote recovery, development, and care accessibility.

For me, attending college is about more than simply earning a degree; it's also about developing personally, broadening my horizons, and eventually making a great impact on my community. College offers the chance to overcome obstacles in one's academic and personal life and develop into a person who can significantly impact the lives of others. It entails gaining abilities, strengthening my fortitude, and getting ready to accomplish objectives that previously seemed unattainable. To become a therapist who can offer high-quality mental health treatment, particularly to those who cannot afford it, I am pursuing a degree in psychology. As I was growing up, I saw loved ones battle mental health issues and occasionally be unable to get the assistance they required because of financial constraints. I was inspired to be someone who can help reduce that gap after the experience made me realize how important it is to have access to mental health care. I can successfully pursue this objective because to the resources, information, and guidance that college offers. In terms of academics, college enables me to explore new fields that will deepen my comprehension of the human condition while delving into disciplines that I am enthusiastic about, such as psychology, social work, and sociology.I am learning how to go through complicated psychological theories, acquiring a deeper understanding of human behavior, and improving my analytical skills—all of which will be useful to me as a future therapist—through my studies. However, my education isn't just in the classroom; I'm also developing through real-world experiences like research opportunities and internships, which are assisting me in comprehending how mental health services are provided locally. I'm laying the groundwork for my therapeutic objectives by fusing theoretical understanding with practical experience. Developing resilience is another benefit of attending college. I've never had to think critically, solve problems, or move outside of my comfort zone as I do in college. Managing my personal life, part-time jobs, and academic obligations has taught me the value of stress management and tenacity, two traits I know will be crucial in my future profession. I'm improving as a therapist by learning how to deal with setbacks and adjust to new circumstances, which will enable me to support clients through their struggles with compassion and understanding. The college also offers the opportunity to interact with people from a variety of backgrounds, each of whom has their viewpoints and anecdotes. Through these encounters, I have learned to value diverse perspectives, which is critical for a job in therapy where cultural awareness and empathy are critical. In addition, the college has allowed me to discuss social justice, equity, and mental health advocacy, which has strengthened my resolve to increase the accessibility and inclusivity of mental health care. Ultimately, attending college is a step toward achieving a goal. In addition to pursuing a career, my goal is to develop into a person who can positively influence the lives of others. I am preparing to become the type of therapist who can offer compassionate care to people in need, regardless of their financial situation, by putting in a lot of effort, learning, and developing.
